Braves Pitcher Tommy Hanson Has Mild Concussion

After reports surfaced of his auto accident yesterday, most of Braves Nation has been waiting timidly to see what the extent of Tommy Hanson's injuries would be. David O'Brien of the AJC has this report via twitter:

Tweet-dob-hanson_medium

The good news is that this seems mild by all accounts of the reporting. Hanson may lose a couple of days of drills, but he should be on schedule to return by the end of the week. (Actually, this is a mildly inventive way to get out of PFP.)

Hopefully this will not linger, as post-concussion symptoms sometimes can, and Tommy will feel no ill effects throughout the rest of spring training and the regular season.

FFFFF

this is not good in any way at all.

An ominous start to spring

Report that Hudson will miss a month, Chipper coming in pudgy, and now a mild concussion for big red.

Let’s get some good news rolling, shall we?

Pudgy Chipper

Must be part of his strategy to outfox his knees.

Doesn’t Hooters offer a low-calorie menu these days?

OK...you've made your damn point

We all know Chipper’s history. Either you’re bringing it up because you’ve all of a sudden decided to regurgitate things you read on TGP, you want him to retire, or something else.

Make your point, and move on. It’s not necessary to pile on top of one of the best Braves players ever to put on a uniform…

Considering I bought his jersey this offseason to proudly wear to CBP and receive all the heckling I can get, I think its safe to assume its all good-nature ribbing.

You can love someone as a player without placing them on a “you can’t say that!” pedestal.

I'm a tad confused...

between the pictures and fanshots you’ve posted whether its poking fun at one’s fandom or not

Love Chip

Was hoping he would come into camp in the best shape in years considering the way last season ended, and the fact that with his age/injury history any game could be his last. When I saw pictures showing that clearly wasn’t the case I was highly disappointed. I voiced that through poking fun/showing my disappointment.

Still love Chip.

I’m just excited that this is the first season in 22 years that I’ll actually look like Chipper when I wear my #10 jersey. To all the haters out there, he’s one of the best players to ever wear a Braves jersey, and one of the best 3 switch hitters of all time. Chipper knows how to play, and he’ll be in shape by the start of the season. He didn’t come back to not play well.

Think of it this way

Making fun of our own are like mom jokes. We can make fun of them, but heaven forbid anyone else does. It’s harmless, and it is kind of funny to see Chipper pudging out a little bit, albeit it I agree, a questionable example.

GLOOOOOOOOOMMMMM

Oh no, the sky is falling.

I mean, really? Some people just search for “bad news”.

How exactly is arguably our most important pitcher being diagnosed with a mild concussion “searching”? Go ask Sidney Crosby how igsignificant mild concussions can be.

And any time your most consistent, veteran startign pitcher is slated to miss at least a month, that’s always bad news.

Crosby's wasn't "mild"

he misses at most a week to be safe, and can probably stay in shape in the meantime. Including the Chipper pudgy stuff (he can easily be working off some pounds over the spring), yes, it’s seaching for bad news. Real games are a month and a half away. The only news that might impact them is the Hudson stuff, and that’s not new news, and not really significant considering our pitching depth.

Well none of this is good news,

Never said the season was over, just said that its a string of bad news. I’m looking forward to seeing “Pastornicky showing increased power, Heyward hitting the Heyward tents, and Terdoslavich proving he can hit with the big boys”.

And I love Chip as much as anyone, but I’m not going to be an apologist like everyone else seems to want to be. Coming to camp 15 pounds overweight when you already struggle with injuries is not a great example to the rest of the team.

After 19 years...

of not setting great examples for other players…I don’t see why Chipper should start now.

…and you know he is 15 pounds overweight how?

How exactly is arguably our most important pitcher

i’ll argue that and say JJ’s our most important as, IF he has a dominant first 1.5 months he’ll be traded for a RH LF bat.

but, for the next 3-5 years, Teheran is, by far, our most “important” pitcher.

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Who is screaming that the sky is falling?

But to say that this is a non-factor is just as idiotic as saying that the season is over (and I don’t see anyone saying that.)"

Searching for bad news..honestly..what the hell are you smoking

Hyperbole.

Look it up, cutie.

Yea I know that the sky is not literally falling. Would you like me to applaud your lowest common denominator

The part that was ridiculous was not your utilization of a tired cliche, but more that you think people are “looking for bad news.” That is absolutely stupid. I mean one of our pitchers (not to mention a key one) got in a car crash and has a mild concussion which is affecting his work out routine. That’s not nothing. And no one is going far out of their way to acquire this information.

It just doesn’t make any sense that you would paint it in that light, and it seems like someone striving to avoid engagement on an intellectual level.

Oh gee...

Get over yourself.

First, Hudson missing time is not news. This was stated soon after the news was released about his surgery. If anything, the news on Tim is positive, as he says he feels better than he has in years since he is finally pain-free. Second, Chipper being “fat” or “chubby” is not news, mainly because it’s just the OP’s opinion that that this is even true. Finally, while a concussion is not good, in this case it is a Grade 1 concussion.
According to the American Academy of Neurology guidelines:

An athlete suffering a single, grade I concussion is given a neurological evaluation every five minutes starting immediately after the injury and may return to the competition if signs and symptoms resolve within a quarter of an hour
So they really are just being extra cautious.

So sorry if I’m still not engaging intellectually enough for you. I’m guess I’m just not able to converse at your level; comments like “that’s the stupidest I’ve ever heard”, and “what the hell are you smoking” are repartee the likes I which I can only admire and envy.

What part of that statement has anything to do with people “looking for bad news” the point was that a pitcher getting in a car accident isn’t totally irrelevant. You saying that people even mentioning it is “looking for bad news” is beyond stupid.

Anyway, things like Hudson’s back, Chipper’s weight, and Hanson’s accident can all be objectively portrayed, so it isn’t as if people are editorializing (besides Chipper, and even though that is just a sidebar for this conversation I think we can agree he doesn’t look like he is in great shape, perhaps heavier than usual) and making stuff up.

So what is your problem, is it reality or is it that you want something to bitch about, even if it is about people bitching (they weren’t.)

I'm not the one...

… having a come-apart because of someone’s fairly innocuous comment, so I think the real question here is what is YOUR problem? You seem to be lurking around waiting for me to post something so you can jump on it and point out all the flaws in my existence. Go pick on somebody else – it’s starting to get ridiculous.

A come-apart? Don’t flatter yourself. I just think you’re an idiot and take pleasure from poking you is all.

If you want me to pick on someone else then be less stupid. It is that easy. In the mean time, either woman up or stfu because your hypocrisy has prompted me to have some fun with you. Should be a good year…

Okay, now you're crossing a line.

Per Talking Chop community guidelines:

The following are simply not acceptable on TC (excepting, in some cases, for obvious humor between people with an existing rapport) and are subject to sanction as outlined below:
Personal attacks on community members, directly or through sarcasm/belittling, e.g., “You’re an idiot”, “You don’t know what you’re talking about, moron”, “Apparently, you’ve never seen a baseball game, or you’d know?”, “My Chihuahua knows more about baseball than you do”, etc.

Alright, so I’ll just mock you without directly calling you names. Note that this still means something you said can be stupid, idiotic, moronic etc.

That’s gotta be legal because we have done it mercilessly to many members over the years and I don’t remember a word from you on their behalf. So buck up soldier girl.

What's your problem with me anyway?

I’ve never done anything to you. I don’t even really remember you. Do you just randomly pick out people to be ugly to?

Legal has nothing to do with it, BTW.

I mean it isn’t like I just called you a moron without any sort of supporting evidence. I discussed what it was about your post that I thought was silly so it wasn’t just totally random.

You’ve annoyed me before, then annoyed me fairly recently, and I found your above post annoying. So, I logically put that information together and formed an opinion of you.

Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure I annoy you too so at least there is some equality.

Actually, you did call her a moron without much supporting evidence.

Is the Hanson concussion searching for bad news?? No, probably not, but it is rather insignificant in the broad scope of things. sdd had that right. Hanson misses a couple days of training and nothing more comes of it. ATLandUNC’s comment was pretty doom and gloomy, so perhaps the biggest mistake sdd made was a reply fail.

Either way, nothing sdd said was remotely, “The dumbest thing (you’ve) ever heard,” figuratively, because I’ve seen you post way dumber bullshit than that. Maybe you don’t read your comments, though, so I guess I could technically be incorrect. It’s very unlikely, though.

Your reaction to the initial sdd comment was, imo, out of line in comparison to what was said. From there, you got much worse and degraded to being outright nasty.

The one thing you’ve gotten correct in this little spiel of yours is that you’re sure that you annoy sdd too. Newsflash: She’s not alone in that respect. You annoy the shit out of many of us here, as evidenced throughout many threads during the past year or so.

I’m sure I annoy the shit out of people as well, but even my hot-headedness has not resulted into a fiasco such as this. This is worse than Sanchez-Justin arguments. You’re not even arguing about baseball. You’re arguing over, “Some people just search for ‘bad news.’”

If you want to pick a fight, at least have the cajones to fight over a topic of debate that merits actual substance rather than resorting to this hit-and-run, smear job bullshit.

I would like to believe that even you are better than this.

-C

First of all I implicitly acknowledged that I did call her a name and I agreed to drop that.

I don’t know what the hell you are talking about when you say “annoy the shit out of many of us here, as evidence throughout many threads during the past year or so,” unless you are referring to individual back and forths with specific people.

That combined with “even you are better than this” (which is totally cryptic because I don’t have any sort of history unless you want to try to create one) means you are doing exactly what you are accusing me of, that is a hit-and-run smear campaign. SDD and I have exchanged words in the past and have gotten into it before, so what this has to do with you or your attempt to cast me as some sort of random asshole is beyond me.

If I may interject—-you’re a man insulting a woman on the internet. Most of us were raised to respect women, even if we may not agree with them. If you don’t like her opinion then ignore it or respectfully disagree. There’s no need to insult her.

But if that is the criteria then how can we expect an honest discussion because it will ultimately be on different planes.

I also find that there is a distinction between woman and lady.

I don't know what you are talking about.

I don’t remember “talking” to you before the last couple of days.

That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. In fact, the same lack of memory of the event is what prompted what I found to be pure hypocrisy. I just found your hypocrisy to be a bit silly, and then I found this comment silly. And even though -C defended you, he even conceded that your initial point was silly. History is really irrelevant to this conversation as I responded purely to what I thought was stupid. Sorry if I sensed a bit of a pattern.

But interestingly, I don’t remember you, or C, saying a word in defense of Chop as he was being thoroughly persecuted.

I didn’t say her initial point was silly. I said I didn’t necessarily agree that people were searching for bad news, but that her point that the story is insignificant in the long run was correct.

As for Chop, just about everyone warned him politely long before his run of posts that eventually got him banned. You can only do so much. I don’t really see the correlation, though, as sdd typically brings up good points and provides worthwhile commentary.

-C

Does she? I don’t remember her every saying anything meaningful about baseballl, but that is beside the point. The idea is that you didn’t post a long winded bullshit reply filled with phantom attempts at insult when ChopMaster was being relentlessly persecuted.

Anyway I appreciate you posting a hit and run smear campaign criticizing what you called a hit and run smear campaign. Anyway, after your attempts to imply that people think that I’m an idiot (I would love to see some proof on that) you’ve only managed to flaunt the same type of hypocrisy that drew my ire on SDD in the first place.

Meanwhile, Sluggla just got Slugglier...

David O’Brien @ajcbraves Meanwhile, #Braves 2B Dan Uggla, who already had Popeye arms, has even larger guns now after adding about 20 lbs through heavier lifting.

I just hope he has some flexibility left.

Being a former Bob Sanders FANatic...

you raise a valid point.

wtf

He’s twenty pounds….heavier? He does know that moving around in the field playing defense wasn’t his best asset, right? This isn’t going to help anything.

DOB's next quote is...

“Arms are massive.”

Yikes

When is the last time someone “bulking up” did any good for us? 2008 Frenchy and 2011 Heyward would be examples.

The last thing Uggla needed to worry about was power. His biggest downfalls last year and throughout his career have been quickness…big arms aren’t going to help that.

Here’s to hoping it leads to 40 homers though…

I don’t want to see .210/.280/.420 though with those 40 HRs

If he hits like 2nd half Uggla, he can have 40 inch forearms for all I care.
