From a David O'Brien Tweet regarding Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones:
I really have no words for that. Strange. I guess he felt it probably wasn't that serious (but if that was the case, then why did he get an MRI). Strange.
It seems like Chipper is almost giving too many reassurances of his health today (if you're following the tweets from David O'Brien and Mark Bowman). Of course, that could just be what those guys are choosing to highlight in their reporting today, and not really anything different than normal. Speaking of...
LOLarry!

Maybe if Laroche was around he could have warned him

This is interesting too….
Tweet from DOB:
$7 mill option vests at $9M w/ 123g in ’12, increases $1M each for 128g, 133, 138, 140. RT @ATL815: @ajcbraves How much is CJ option worth?
GumpBrave - January 31, 2012
That’s for ‘13 according to what I’ve seen and heard, dunno where DOB pulled the ’12 from. Chipper back in 2013 might not be as much of a financial burden as you might think.
GumpBrave - January 31, 2012
It all depends on how he performs this year, and if he can sneak in 120-130 games which would mean he stayed relatively healthy. Mix that with similar numbers he put up last year, and I am all in favor of him coming back.
MVPrado - January 31, 2012 via mobile
But..
I just dont see Chipper staying healthy if he did come back for a 2013 season.. way too many holes in the woods
Saxby Phillips - January 31, 2012
I don't see it.
I don’t think Chipper can stay healthy for 120 games. On a side note, do pinch hit appearances count as a game played?
airman in bama - January 31, 2012
Does playing in a game count as playing in a game?
Lennox - January 31, 2012
nice
drumzalicious - January 31, 2012
in other words...
yes
jdelsandro - January 31, 2012
"Game played"
if it said, “game started”, it’d be different.
Mr. Sanchez - February 1, 2012
So Chipper is not saying that he will retire at the end of the year
I sure hope that this doesn’t turn into another Smoltz situation. I can’t bear to think about Chipper wearing another team’s uniform.
LEastCoastBears - January 31, 2012
that would suck...
Seeing Chipper in a Redsox Uniform, or a Cardinals Uniform EVEN WORSE.. Still wish I would have never seen Smoltz anywhere else
jdelsandro - January 31, 2012
it would most definitely
be an AL team. No NL team except the Braves would play a 40 year old at 3B
drumzalicious - January 31, 2012
No way he plays for another team
Unlike Smoltz, after this season Chipper knows he has less than 2 seasons left in the majors. He won’t accept a 1 year deal and retire with another team, or risk going to a team that cuts him when he doesn’t perform. He’s ending his career on his terms.
rxadam - January 31, 2012
You know, retiring because you team won’t offer you a contract isn’t exactly ending your career on your own terms either.
Chipper would clearly like to get to another WS before his career ends, if the Braves don’t give him that chance don’t be shocked if he takes it with another club.
Lennox - January 31, 2012
Could Chipper possibly learn to play 1st for a year .
Maybe move Freeman to the OF (LF) for just 1 year and move Prado to 3rd . I’m sure I will get some bashing or disagreements on this . But it seems as though maybe Chipper would benefit from not having to much as much as a 1st baseman on the field and might be able to play a few more games .
bravesdude - January 31, 2012
1st baseman need to stretch to dig up the ball. Chipper can’t possibly do that due to his leg problems. If you’re moving Freeman to the OF, Prado can play 1st.
LEastCoastBears - February 1, 2012
Chipper, if he was a FA, I’d definitely offer him a contract. It wouldn’t be for anything over $4-5mil though.
That’s what he’s worth at this point in his career. He’s a good player when healthy.
He deserves a shot to go out on his own terms, but the other 24 guys on the club deserve the best team possible.
Broccoman - February 1, 2012
No need to worry
Chipper’s contract calls for a 2013 salary much reduced from his 2012 salary, which will be his last monster pay day in MLB. To be blunt the Braves can easily afford his 2013 salary. I believe if certain games played or maybe at bat targets are met this season his contract automatically kicks in for 2013.
Zontar - February 1, 2012
Im thinking
Chipper in 2013 might be a little of a pain.
drumzalicious - January 31, 2012
by then he may be more of a player coach then anything… honestly
jdelsandro - January 31, 2012
random
if Chipper hits like he hit last year his career numbers could go below a .300 avg and a .400 OBP . . . . .
hmmm
drumzalicious - January 31, 2012
I'm so glad
we didn’t trade Prado.
WeStillHaveBobby - February 1, 2012
Love Chip
But I hope he calls it quits after 2012.
Last thing we need is him sticking around to play 100 games a year but expecting to be the starter.
Now, if he sticks around to be our equivalent of a DH for a few million…that wouldn’t be as painful.
ATLandUNC - February 1, 2012
this
walknbalk - February 1, 2012
Yeah.
This.
I agree. Chipper, you’re not giving me any reason to feel good about you staying healthy.
skandrewj62j - February 1, 2012
I agree. But to be honest 7 million for 100 games of Chipper is not terrible, though it does create some constant question marks for our club. I’d rather it not be the case, but Chipper is unlikely to hamstring us financially in 2013 unless he is at least some kind of constant presence (120 ish games.) I also think that Chippers is not going to try to force in a couple of games unnecessarily for a couple more million. He has plenty of money and seems to care about the Braves. I don’t know for a fact, but I bet Chipper was privy to the fact that the option had a games limitation and that his value was partly incumbent on his ability to play regularly. I doubt he will abuse that to try to gain a (relatively) small pay day.
I personally hope he has a fantastic year culminating in a world series win that convinces him that he and baseball have had their time (a tough realization regardless of age.) I think that (to a point) money is valued less than the franchise that he basically embodies.
GumpBrave - February 1, 2012
And we have DHs?
Mr. Sanchez - February 1, 2012
Google “equivalent”
ATLandUNC - February 1, 2012
I'm well aware of what the word means
but by all means, please explain what would be similar to something that doesn’t exist in the NL? Are you saying he’d be a pinch hitter? That he’d start at 3B and be removed around the 6th inning after his 3rd or 4th at bat. How does an NL team use the “equivalent” of something they don’t use by rule?
Mr. Sanchez - February 1, 2012
i agree
and seeing that Selig wants the DH to go to both leagues (don’t get me started on that fiasco waiting to happen) as soon as 2013, he would be a nice DH insurance policy to have.
JoelGuzman'sScout - February 1, 2012
I love the fact the Chipper still has the will to play .
He obviously is going to be one those guys that is just going to be tough for him to walk away from the game . I would love to see the organization restructure a deal with him , if he is serious about playing beyond this year , where they ease him into a player/coaches role . Something where he starts this year . But maybe next year , he has a more limited role as a player (insurance in case of injury or backup) but is on the team as an assistant coach or coach in waiting for maybe as the hitting coach or manager .
bravesdude - February 1, 2012
I think giving him a player/manager contract would be unique- the last guy to have one was Pete Rose.
Broccoman - February 1, 2012
On a side note
Livan going to the Astros. thank god he’s gone.
suicide bunting is a sin - February 1, 2012
ST is going to be a little anxious for this fan
Alot of “iffy” going in. Chipper’s knee, Huddy’s back. J.J. & Hanson questionable as well.
adc62 - February 1, 2012
Sigh
The Mets have a pitcher who can climb mountains and we have a third baseman who can’t walk through the woods :\
Doghnut - February 1, 2012
Yeah, but our team’s awesome and their team sucks ass… so… Yeah. We win.
Fatvirus - February 1, 2012
you can't throw a knuckle ball in thin air
so, who cares if he can climb mountains?
JoelGuzman'sScout - February 1, 2012
Well
You can’t hit a fastball stepping in holes, but I sure as hell care about my thirdbaseman going hunting if it means he’ll get injured.
Doghnut - February 1, 2012
That headline just screams for comments going through my head…but I self-controlled. ;-)
Personally, I want to Chipper Jones in a Braves uniform as long as he wants to wear one.
(skips off to let you all debate the stats etc..)
.
NCChopper - February 1, 2012
I wonder if he’d be willing to transition to a bench roll for 2013. That would be ideal for this club. And with the new interleague schedule he’ll get to DH regularly throughout the season.
king of games - February 1, 2012
I’d support that.
And I know how unlikely it is, but the mention of player/manager or player/coach above makes me drool.
NCChopper - February 1, 2012
I just hope he wants to wear it only coming out to complain to umps and yanking pitchers.
Broccoman - February 1, 2012
God I hope he's not "yanking pitchers"
