Imagine the sound of cartoon car breaks screeching to a halt, and that's what my mind did when I saw this tweet from David O'Brien:
Oh great. Now we have to worry about Buddy Carlyle stealing time away from more deserving pitchers. I guess as triple-A depth he's not that bad, but more than anything he represents those Braves teams of the late 2000's when they were settling for below average players. They stumbled upon some guys who did okay at first, but far too often they stuck with those guys for too long, to the detriment of the team.

What about Chuck James?

Pascual Perez
If I remember this right, his first start for Atlanta was pushed back (Phil Niekro got the emergency start that night) because he couldn’t find the ball park.
carpengui - January 31, 2012
Jorge Campillo
Went 8-7 with a 3.91 ERA. Buddy didn’t have much stuff wise but he wasn’t afraid to throw it over the plate.
niekromurphy - January 30, 2012
And the hitters weren’t afraid to deposit those pitches into the left field bleachers.

Yeah....
There were times that he took a beating. I was at a game where the Red Sox just murdered him. What I admired about him is that for better or for worse, he was gonna make the hitter beat him. This is what I got. Hit it or don’t, but you ain’t getting a free pass.

Does this mean he got a ST invite?
If so he could pull a Proctor, where he pitches decent enough to fool management in to keeping him.
DopeFalcons - January 30, 2012 via mobile
No. He was not invited to big league camp.

Can this Braves offseason be any more....
Boring….upsetting…..ridiculous……moronic…CHEAP……“you-fill-in-the-next-adjective”?
I AM a Braves fan, but goodness this is dry. I mean, we are talking about prospect baseball cards for crying out loud…Seriously? Let me guess…Mike Bielecki, Jaret Wright, and Adam Bennett are still available? Leo Mazzone ain’t here anymore and we are NOT the Braves of the 90’s (and early 2000s I suppose)…..I hate cheap owners!

I don’t understand the hate for Buddy. He had a good year in 2008, then sucked in 2009 and was relegated to AAA for most of the year. The team got a good season out of a Four-A player, what’s not to love about that?
cbwilk - January 30, 2012
Actually, he was hurt most of 2009, so he sucked because of an injury. Again, don’t get it. The guy had a good year in the Majors for the team, which is more than you should ever really expect from a Minor League signee.
cbwilk - January 30, 2012
agree completely.
Welcome back buddy. Hope you prove the naysayers wrong.

I think everybody is just bitter about the rotations of 2007 and 2008.
swainzy - January 31, 2012
Which is fine, but Buddy never made a start for the team.
cbwilk - January 31, 2012
He made 20 in 2007.

You’re better at reading facts that I am. Holy crap. Didn’t remember that. Well, again, hardly his fault that a AAA journey man ends up pitching 100 innings in the Majors. And he was a very effective reliever the next season. If you look at his WAR he was actually +0.5 in 07, and +0.5 in 08, then -0.5 in 09 when he was injured all year, so all things being considered, he was a guy making the minimum who have positive value to the team. Again, I was ridiculously wrong about him not making any starts, that was me being stupid, but Buddy Carlyle was a more effective pitcher for the Braves than anyone should have had any right to expect him to be.
cbwilk - February 1, 2012
I agree with you 100%; I think it’s great that Buddy is getting another chance with the Braves. I was just saying that the pitchers associated with the patch-work rotations of those days have some sort unfair negative stigma attached to them—for example, somebody mentioned Jorge Campillo sarcastically in an earlier comment even though he was fantastic for the Braves when they needed him most.
swainzy - February 1, 2012
Yeah, I knew you were on the side of right and logic. It’s amazing the incorrect associations people make in their minds.
cbwilk - February 2, 2012
Don’t worry because the chances are that Buddy will crack our staff when hair grows out of the palm of my hand.

Buddy is 41-28 as a AAA pitcher
and 70 something and 30 something in the minors all together. So if anything he will provide good depth for Gwinnett. And if the injury bug hits us hopefully he can step up and fill a long relief role or even make a spot start.
Atlanta Braves Fan - January 31, 2012
He's been in baseball longer than anyone on the team other than Chipper

Carlyle? look out, here comes Bob Wickman for his comeback.
mayman59 - January 31, 2012
First Wickman and then Rocker
That’ll at least get the Braves some coverage on ESPN.
