Posted this on the pregame thread and I thoroughly believe in it
Here’s what’s going to happen today:
1. Tim Hudson is going to be the ace that he is, we handle business and beat the phils.
2. Brett Myers shuts down the cards and the Astros win. He’s been pitching well lately and mentioned earlier how this is like game 7 of the World Series for him. Couldn’t be more pumped to hear that.
3.D’backs beat the Dodgers.
4. Pirates beat the brewers.
We then go on to sweep Arizona and see the sillies in the NLCS and remember how they thought these past couple days were funny as shit and proceed to kick their asses.
I don’t know why, because I was fuming yesterday, but I shrugged it all off today, I just want them to play well, if this turns into yesterdays game… I’m gonna be destroyed
Everyone in the bullpen needs to be ready to go multiple innings and Fredi needs to have the stones to pull Hudson if there is trouble early. Even Hudson can have a bad game or get unlucky. You only get one shot at this.
If there is a 6-run lead, then no, I don’t think you use the aces of the bullpen unless trouble develops. That’s a big enough lead that you can start to plan for the next game. 4-run lead, I’m fine with him being ultra-conservative.
Fredi has been good with the hook all season, for the most part. He definitely errors on the side of caution, which I’m fine with in a big game like this.
Although I have to say, even though it didn’t work out last year, I loved seeing Lowe want to be the hero in game 4 of the NLDS.
Rick Sutcliffe is a complete tool. That’s inadequate, since it’s tough to describe someone who is imperious, idiotic, and a general douchebag rolled into one.
so Fredi needed 161 games to address the team in a VERY SERIOUS manner???? Perhaps any of the other games we’ve lost this week would have been a bit more appropriate?
I have noticed it lately and lack of hustle is not generally something that describes Prado. Still, if it was me I re-injure myself running all out to that ball because there literally might not be a tomorrow.
It’s not about his 40 speed, he was definitely jogging at first. I agree with Bronn that he might be a little sore, but as I said above, there is no tomorrow. If that’s as fast as he goes then he shouldn’t be playing outfield, or at least not in the shift. Let Bourn’s speed be your safety net not Prado’s.
The obvious answer would be Constanza. But you don’t set it up like that. The point is that Bourn should have more ground to cover than Prado regardless of shift, and we saw exactly why.
That’s if you wanted to play pure defense, but I don’t recommend it. But like I said above, Bourn should have the responsibility of having more ground not Prado.
But that ball wasn’t too late. It was cut off a little after the run scored, so every foot matters, hence when I am talking about max effort and not max speed.
A lot of reasons have contributed to my not being here on a regular basis, however the core reason, I believe, is the fact that you idiots try and talk baseball like you know what’s going on. You are so biased, blinded, idiotic that you have never known/learned baseball. Guys, seriously. Stop asking mini questions and start being fans. You have no fucking clue as to why Prado approached his at bat the way he did, or Chipper, or Uggla. So shut the fuck up and root!
and just throws in comments from time to time, I’d like to know what you mean by that. I understand a lot of the people here are douches and criers, no offense to anyone, but you just made kind of a blanket sweep with nothing to back it up. I’d like to have some specific examples, if you don’t mind.
Yeah, but you’re comment wasn’t just “Stop your belly aching and hating and all of the like” instead, your comment was “You guys know little to nothing about baseball.” I wanted to know where that came from.
What i meant was “Most fans know little to nothing about baseball, and as such stop belly aching because we’re all Braves fans and want this to work out”. Ha. but seriously that was the overall goal
Fans overanalyze, that’s a major outlet for being emotionally invested in something you have no control over. Why you think that is negative to the fan experience shows that perhaps you are as ignorant about the nature of fandom as you claim we are about baseball.
The funny thing is that there is a lot of baseball knowledge here, and if you formulated any rebuttal to our “obvious” ignorance then someone out there would back you up. In the mean time, I’m forced to ask if ignorance did not create the illusion of ignorance.
Though to be fair, there are a lot of idiotic comments, so I don’t totally disagree with you. But if you are talking about any analysis that happens on TC then I have to very much disagree.
Understand that I am trying to respond to all these people responding to my “obviously” outlandish claims, I would say that there are stat geeks here, and also people who have played the game here, but usually the squeaky wheel is the disgruntled ass who knows nothing. All I was saying was please keep it in check.
Would it be too much to focus on the game, here in what could be the last one of the season instead of berating the folks here on the GT?
They’re here, not likely gonna change to suit you now… so why not just overlook what you can and if you can’t then there’s always that little (X) in the top right.
that’s all they need is an injury to their starting catcher going into the playoffs…which I wouldn’t mind at all. It would have been their fault for not resting their starters. :)
I believe it refers to the motion of the curveball as a clock. The 12 is on the top and the 6 is on the bottom, and the 12-6 curveball falls vertically while a standard curveball tends to have more horizontal motion and less vertical motion.
just that a curve ball generally breaks down, from 12 o’clock to 6 oclock, breaking balls break left to right or vice versa. thrown directly overhand the ball starts up and breaks str8 down, little movement to either side
I agree and noticed it early, but I think it is a function of adrenaline, but I want him out there for us right now just the way it is. I love it. I see the fire in his eyes that have been lacking during this collapse.
“And the center fielder gets SHOT BY A HIGH-POWERED RIFLE before making the catch. No excuses. You still gotta come up with that ball. You’re the quarterback of the defense over there!”
Because that wasn’t the type of double steal which is actually a called play. Prado took his secondary lead and then started running as the throw went to third.
A double steal that is a called play happens with runners on first and third, and the runner on first steals second, hoping to provoke a throw, at which point the runner on third tries to steal home. That’s generally a called play-taking second on a throw to third on your own prerogative generally is not.
Really? That’s silly, but I have an idea who did it. They meant well methinks, but still, Fredi is pretty objectively idiotic, so it feels a lot like good intentions and denial.
Still like our chances. With the pitchers we have available for next year he has a lot to prove. This is his golden opportunity and I know he is gonna capitalize.
Well I think that shows that he is a pretty intense presence in the clubhouse, which has inherent value. And it’s not like he’s ever won a game for us before (yes I remember, stfu)
I wonder if he realizes how much sugar is in Powerade. He’s going to have diabetes before his current contract is up with the Phillies. Yes, I will laugh.
Go Braves!
Nothing else to say at this point…

youre right about milwaukee needing to lose and arizona needing to win

Diaz is 2-for-6 against Blanton while Heyward is 0-for-3.
Clearly Diaz is better for this spot.

This. Come on King you know Fredi is a stats guru

Of course, we’d all be dead of heart attacks before that.

The debate that I want to hear tonight
would be why is Fredi using O’Ventbrel with a 6 run lead when we might have a game tomorrow.
LEastCoastBears - September 28, 2011
Everyone in the bullpen needs to be ready to go multiple innings and Fredi needs to have the stones to pull Hudson if there is trouble early. Even Hudson can have a bad game or get unlucky. You only get one shot at this.

Gosh, how many times did he do that? I know you’ve already looked it up.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
I have not
I’ve been more depressed than angry. Rest assured, I’ll find indignant rage after this game ends should we lose.

walknbalk - September 28, 2011
No logical reason...
just a gut feeling.

DolphinNation - September 28, 2011
Is there any chance Braves will be as patient at the Phillies have been here?
ATLtruth - September 28, 2011
Let's hope so
Undocorkscrew - September 28, 2011
Not if Larry Parrish has his say
Beachy Keen - September 28, 2011
No chance in hell
When the Braves get in trouble, they press, instead of waiting back for the pitches to come to them. It’s been a defining trait this month.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
2 down
DolphinNation - September 28, 2011
Hunter Pence getting booed? Why him?
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
He's wearing a Philly jersey
good enough reason for me

SouthAlaBamaRampage - September 28, 2011

EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 28, 2011
All i can say is Go Astros
Beachy Keen - September 28, 2011
Huddy is way too elevated.
ATLtruth - September 28, 2011
Come on Martin, how did it take you that long?
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
He was almost in left-center with the shift.
StapleGun - September 28, 2011
And he is incredibly slow
ATLtruth - September 28, 2011
He also jogged to the ball at first.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
I know it was a long distance but if that is him running all out then the dude has no business playing OF
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Martin isn't running as well as he was early in the season
He’s not really healthy, I don’t think. It hasn’t stopped him from playing everyday and generally stinking up the place, though.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
I have noticed it lately and lack of hustle is not generally something that describes Prado. Still, if it was me I re-injure myself running all out to that ball because there literally might not be a tomorrow.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
He’s just not a good OFer.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
All the more reason to put him in a package with Jurrjens for Kemp
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
Pence would have scored no matter what
wpf3211 - September 28, 2011
Even if he fell rounding second and broke both his legs?
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
There should have been a play at the plate, Prado took his sweet time getting there.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
When you run from center to past the left field foul line, it’s going to take awhile. Prado’s not Usain Bolt.
-C
cthabeerman - September 28, 2011
It’s not about his 40 speed, he was definitely jogging at first. I agree with Bronn that he might be a little sore, but as I said above, there is no tomorrow. If that’s as fast as he goes then he shouldn’t be playing outfield, or at least not in the shift. Let Bourn’s speed be your safety net not Prado’s.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
So who do you put in for the shift, smart guy??
-C
cthabeerman - September 28, 2011
He just said – Bourn
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
The obvious answer would be Constanza. But you don’t set it up like that. The point is that Bourn should have more ground to cover than Prado regardless of shift, and we saw exactly why.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
That’s if you wanted to play pure defense, but I don’t recommend it. But like I said above, Bourn should have the responsibility of having more ground not Prado.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Don't bitch Martin on that
Howard crossed-up the defense. Prado was playing left-center.
AmgineRmEht - September 28, 2011
Nah he earned his hit, but there should have at least been a play at the plate.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Bear in mind...
Pence had to run 270 feet and had a jump …Prado probably ran nearly 200. Pence is fast, Prado is not.
-C
cthabeerman - September 28, 2011
But that ball wasn’t too late. It was cut off a little after the run scored, so every foot matters, hence when I am talking about max effort and not max speed.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
See if he had ran to the ball like he busted it up the line I think there is at least a close play.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Prado is no Jason Heyward in the field…or with the bat.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
wow
sidbreamsstache - September 28, 2011
So, twice we’ve seen him hit the other way of the defense for an RBI.
NCChopper - September 28, 2011

I feel sick

DolphinNation - September 28, 2011
Patience pays off for the Phillies
I expect every Braves’ hitter in the bottom half to swing at the first pitch.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
Sigh begging so much for the patience we just saw from the Phillies.
ATLtruth - September 28, 2011
As do I
I’ve seen no indications that they think they’re approach has been flawed. But I’ll reserve my judgement, just preparing myself for disappointment.

They're in Central Time
Beachy Keen - September 28, 2011

Like 1/2 that, this inning.
DolphinNation - September 28, 2011
You know
A lot of reasons have contributed to my not being here on a regular basis, however the core reason, I believe, is the fact that you idiots try and talk baseball like you know what’s going on. You are so biased, blinded, idiotic that you have never known/learned baseball. Guys, seriously. Stop asking mini questions and start being fans. You have no fucking clue as to why Prado approached his at bat the way he did, or Chipper, or Uggla. So shut the fuck up and root!
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Classy.
UMDBHIK - September 28, 2011

Thanks for that, f*cktard.
Undocorkscrew - September 28, 2011

kreese555 - September 28, 2011
rooting silently is what marlins fans do
when they are not one of the 30 fans at the game. STFU dumbass
NJoverNY - September 28, 2011
I didn't say silently
I meant intelligently. Focus on the game, and not on what you’re so over-qualified ass would do in such and such situation
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Focus on the game and don't add your own personal input
“Gee, that’s a swell baseball player there,” doesn’t count as intelligent commentary.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
Neither does “You shouldn’t have thrown that pitch Huddy”
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Nah, I'm just gonna fuck with you as long as you post.....
Undocorkscrew - September 28, 2011
Bring it, apparently you don’t know I’m a vet
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
i'll bet you 100 dollars that i know more about baseball than you you douchebag
Stephen M - September 28, 2011
I'll throw another 100 in for myself.
musicman - September 28, 2011
Don’t know how we could prove that, but you’re on. Level of baseball completed?
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Are we really going to have an internet dick measuring contest?
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
I'm a legit MVP candidate.
Just saying. ;)
Bronn - September 28, 2011
What, no comeback to this?
I’m clearly the best baseball player here.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
No batting title for you, though.
DolphinNation - September 28, 2011

justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
lol…internet dick
mvandonsel - September 28, 2011
I don’t want to, but the answer?
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Okay, you might not want to use that as a qualifier of baseball knowledge.
Mitch Williams did play in the bigs, you know.
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - September 28, 2011
and FP Santangelo and Orestes Destrade
mvandonsel - September 28, 2011
As did Joe Morgan
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
and you’re 16. Soooo
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
No I'm not?
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - September 28, 2011
Younger
15?
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
No, but I'd like to know why you think this.
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - September 28, 2011
Pretty sure you’re the young kid that we didn’t want to corrupt at the end of last year/start of this year…
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
As someone who is more of a silent assassin
and just throws in comments from time to time, I’d like to know what you mean by that. I understand a lot of the people here are douches and criers, no offense to anyone, but you just made kind of a blanket sweep with nothing to back it up. I’d like to have some specific examples, if you don’t mind.
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
I appreciate this
and the “blanket sweep” of things was meant to encompass the prior comments of everyone being pessimistic douches. Didn’t think it needed explaining.
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Yeah, but you’re comment wasn’t just “Stop your belly aching and hating and all of the like” instead, your comment was “You guys know little to nothing about baseball.” I wanted to know where that came from.
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
Sorry, I'm 9 deep
What i meant was “Most fans know little to nothing about baseball, and as such stop belly aching because we’re all Braves fans and want this to work out”. Ha. but seriously that was the overall goal
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Fair enough
But now I’m going to need to know what you mean by the fact you’re “9 deep”
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
Beers
I’ve been a little nervous about this game since I got off work at 2:30
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Aren't we all.
Its all I’ve thought about since I woke up.
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
I took off work and started drinking
Now, I think we’ll be okay for some reason!
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Wish I could have!
I basically missed the last month with meningitis and its complications.
thenightstallion - September 28, 2011
Shit! sorry dude, i really havent been keeping track of the goings on of TC but i hope youre feeling better!
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Fans overanalyze, that’s a major outlet for being emotionally invested in something you have no control over. Why you think that is negative to the fan experience shows that perhaps you are as ignorant about the nature of fandom as you claim we are about baseball.
The funny thing is that there is a lot of baseball knowledge here, and if you formulated any rebuttal to our “obvious” ignorance then someone out there would back you up. In the mean time, I’m forced to ask if ignorance did not create the illusion of ignorance.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Though to be fair, there are a lot of idiotic comments, so I don’t totally disagree with you. But if you are talking about any analysis that happens on TC then I have to very much disagree.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Understand that I am trying to respond to all these people responding to my “obviously” outlandish claims, I would say that there are stat geeks here, and also people who have played the game here, but usually the squeaky wheel is the disgruntled ass who knows nothing. All I was saying was please keep it in check.
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
I think your post became counter productive.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
Because I need to keep it in check? Maybe so, but you know as well as I Justin that when people are stupid it beckons you to post…
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
I’m just saying that your post about stupid posts turned into a whole thread of them.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
Which is always the risk. Oh well. Good point, go Braves!
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
Would it be too much to focus on the game, here in what could be the last one of the season instead of berating the folks here on the GT?
They’re here, not likely gonna change to suit you now… so why not just overlook what you can and if you can’t then there’s always that little (X) in the top right.
NCChopper - September 28, 2011
Okay!
kreese555 - September 28, 2011

Bourn came ready to play..
and was ready to plunge into Ruiz at the plate if he needed to. I like seeing that..
WeStillHaveBobby - September 28, 2011
I loved that Bourn was ready to plow his ass and send a message to the team
SouthAlaBamaRampage - September 28, 2011
Ruiz was smart to move..
that’s all they need is an injury to their starting catcher going into the playoffs…which I wouldn’t mind at all. It would have been their fault for not resting their starters. :)

sidbreamsstache - September 28, 2011
I need a YouTube video
to show me the difference between curves and breaking balls.
nypeach83 - September 28, 2011
Curve balls are a type of breaking ball, and along with sliders are the two most popular examples of a “Breaking ball”
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
Good to know, thank you
nypeach83 - September 28, 2011
I think it’s one of those ‘all curveballs are breaking balls, but not all breaking balls are curveballs’ things
mlcasper - September 28, 2011
Curveballs are generally a 12-6 in breaking movement
samxrm - September 28, 2011
12-6
Would you please expand a bit? Or perhaps suggest a site I can look it up?
nypeach83 - September 28, 2011
Look at it on wikipedia. It shows the finger placements and the motions of the various pitches.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 28, 2011
I believe it refers to the motion of the curveball as a clock. The 12 is on the top and the 6 is on the bottom, and the 12-6 curveball falls vertically while a standard curveball tends to have more horizontal motion and less vertical motion.
GumpBrave - September 28, 2011
just that a curve ball generally breaks down, from 12 o’clock to 6 oclock, breaking balls break left to right or vice versa. thrown directly overhand the ball starts up and breaks str8 down, little movement to either side
samxrm - September 28, 2011
thank you both

Because, for one, it's Freeman on third and hardly guaranteed
And I’ve seen way too many failed bunts in general this year to trust any attempt.

well, McCann needed to get Freeman over, if we don’t score then he failed on his part.
rockybull - September 28, 2011
Not McCann’s fault he gets rung up on a ball.
Ivan the Great - September 28, 2011
you still gotta get him over
rockybull - September 28, 2011
The pitch wasn’t even close.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
I know it was a ball, still gotta come through.
rockybull - September 28, 2011
That’s like saying even though a DB grabs both of your arms and tackles you before the QB even throws the ball, you still have to catch it.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
That pitch was borderline.
J Tadpole - September 28, 2011
Not really. It was pretty well inside.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
“And the center fielder gets SHOT BY A HIGH-POWERED RIFLE before making the catch. No excuses. You still gotta come up with that ball. You’re the quarterback of the defense over there!”

nypeach83 - September 28, 2011
I was noticing that – HE looked like a manager there didn’t he?
NCChopper - September 28, 2011
Sure did.
Old Man is NOT joking around right now.
That may be the first Uggla HR where Chipper wasn’t at the top of the steps laughing and waiting to hug him.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
He hugged him, but it was a more serious one than jovial.
Just watching him there was S E X Y. And he’s not even my type. ;-P

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Kobe:The Legend - September 28, 2011
the bad call was freddi's
he was way off the bag on the jump up
stillnotah8er - September 28, 2011
Yeah if you watch the replay, it clearing shows Bourn coming off the bag. That’s what umps are taught to wait before making a call.
musicman - September 28, 2011
Stupid iPad autocorret.
musicman - September 28, 2011
And the call was made before that.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
I think the call to double steal with 2 on and 0 outs with the heart of the order coming up was the “bad” part of that play.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
Where does this assumption come from that the manager tells players when to steal bases?
I generally assume they either have a green light or not, and it’s their own judgment.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
On a general steal, sure. A double steal? There has to be a sign given.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
It really didn’t look like a double steal. Prado just opportunistically took second.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 28, 2011
Prado has never been accused of being a good base runner, and he certainly isn’t fast enough to just take bases on his own.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
I was watching the game, man. He only ran after he saw the throw going to third to get Bourn.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 28, 2011
Not if the guy at first is a “trailer”. The guy at second goes and he “trails” him to second. No call necessary
kreese555 - September 28, 2011
No, no there doesn't
Because that wasn’t the type of double steal which is actually a called play. Prado took his secondary lead and then started running as the throw went to third.
A double steal that is a called play happens with runners on first and third, and the runner on first steals second, hoping to provoke a throw, at which point the runner on third tries to steal home. That’s generally a called play-taking second on a throw to third on your own prerogative generally is not.
Bronn - September 28, 2011
Bronn gets it!
+1
Poohjure - September 28, 2011
I don’t think Prado is that good of a base runner, and I totally believe that Fredi is that bad of a manager.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
Sounds like you need to be a Philly fan then, Negative Nancy.
Poohjure - September 28, 2011
…ok….
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2011
