This is still a one-run game. And if there’s anything our offense has done marginally well lately it’s hit solo hrs. We can still tie this up and then win. Our BP just needs to keep it in reach.
We’ve been over all of this already, not worth bringing back up. I see what I see and make opinions accordingly. I’ve stated those, you disagree, we move on..
Tore my ACL playing b-ball. I tell people it’s when I came down from dunking on someone. Truth is, I was back-peddling on a fast-break and leg twisted and I crumpled to the ground.
Going for the kill. Although, if the Phillies do knock the Braves out, they would get the wild card winner instead of Arizona or Milwaukee. Not sure I’d want to go with the hot hand, but still. Either that, or they are just vindictive dickwads.
No, I am aware of that. Just a little surprised he would dip that deeply into the bullpen for what is really a meaningless game for them. I expect them to play to win.
can anyone tell me why the F Fredi brought in martinez for the 3rd time in 4 games? What a retard…if I could bet a million dollars that the Braves would never get a hit with RISP i’d be a gazillionaire.
That’s why leaving in Diaz was so freaking bizarre. They just pulled the LHP. Unlikely, though possible, that they were going to put in 2 LHP back to back. Plus Heyward can remain in the game for defense and additional PAs.
I hate the Phillies and I hate their fans… but they would be going fucking insane if our situations were reversed right now. Maybe you don’t think that gives the team a lift but I wholeheartedly disagree. I’m tired of our lame fans year after year not being able to sell out playoff atmosphere games for a super young, super exciting team.
We’ve still done everything possible to insure we don’t play in October. Payroll is irrelevant. The point is that we both had our very talented teams on the field and have screwed the proverbial pooch.
I see your point, but if we follow that logic somehow a WS victory would be less meaningful as a result of payroll.
If you want to extend that logic, higher payroll would mean more talent, and the idea would be that the more talented team should do better. If that’s the logic then you must consider that the Red Sox have been scuffling against much better teams than the Braves. The Braves have screwed themselves with sucky teams lately while the Sox have played the Rays and the Yanks. So in that sense the Braves collapse is much worse because you would expect the talent disparity between the Braves and the Marlins/Mets/Nationals would mean more expected wins than the Sox against the Yanks/Orioles/Rays
Yes they do, and have for most of the year. Hell we were optimistic earlier. But if you kick a dog enough times they will understand to stay away from your foot.
IMO the only positive things to say at this point are along the lines of “well we had a great year, til this last month”, and that itself is quite negative.
So to add some humor to this evening, some outrageously hot guy just rode his bike straight into a steel pole right outside my window, saw the whole thing
Awesome check this out....on the philly broadcast...I live in philly and am forced to listen to these guys....
Brad lidge had 18 oppurtunities to get a double play this year…and had ZERO doubleplays and guess what….we ground in a god damn double play. AMAZING!!!
He homered and hit a ground rule double earlier, and he’s playing on a bad leg and limping badly. Not to mention he’s a hall of famer. You’re the worst.
Each game requires special criteria for winning, sometimes it’s overwhelming offense sometimes it’s pitching. Whatever it is, we have recently failed in doing so. Not to mention that other teams have had good luck and we have had bad luck. That combined with what appears to be apathy/communicable comas is what happened.
I think that having a guy who’s hit as bad as Prado has hit all season constantly in the 2-spot is a bigger hinderance to scoring runs than having the best C in baseball hit 5/6 even during a 2 month skid.
We are going to get absolutely pounded even if we do stumble in. Milwaukee’s offense versus our pitching? Ouch. Our offense wouldn’t be scoring much either.
This has become so bad that I’ve started to forget what winning consistently feels like. What I do know has come from scoreboard watching the Cardinals. Something needs to happen soon. We have such talent, that I can’t even believe that Fredi and Parrish are causing all of our worries. Our problems are almost too deep to have such an obvious explanation. While I think they have exacerbated these factors, I think luck and really bad performance (like career bad years for several key pieces, and beyond that RISP futility.
The thing is though that baseball is a sport built in part on balance. Surely the switch has to be flipped right? right?
But this team doesn’t suck this bad. Hardly any team sucks this bad, and most of those teams are supposed to suck and are playing to their talent level. This team is absurdly talented and is really underachieving. Unless they are all broken (and I’m not sure if you can be broken just n a RISP capacity) then they are bound to start playing well. But you are right, tiny amount of time left…
Alright I’ve been really negative on Fredi all season (note that I posted something critical of Fredi either at the beginning of the season or pre-season) and I hope even the loyalists are with me now.
I mean I don’t wish him failure because that would mean that the Braves have failed. But he is a terrible manager, just terrible. And you should be the exact person to have an opinion, if not who else? That’s part of being a fan, and to be honest the Braves should at least be aware that the fans feel a certain way (hopefully they have the acumen to realize the same problems themselves)
.387 OBP in September. And he’s having a better year than Prado, who continues to flounder daily in a premium batting order spot. The biggest key to the demise are the losses to the Cardinals.
That is a claim that is made a lot and is never supported with data. Walks and strikeouts are higher in the 8th spot because more pitches are thrown out of the zone. A hitter with a very good batting eye can take advantage of that.
And the point about Prado stands. He’s been worse for the entire season.
Right, except for getting Lowe’s salary off the books. You get that $15 mil off, Kawakami’s $6 mil, and whatever is owed to Nate… that’s a lot of money we can throw somewhere..
and they can get swept, still make it in, catch fire and win the whole damn thing. That’s why they play the games. I am a Braves fan, therefore I will support them through anything. You seem about as fair-weathered as it gets…
The best case is that they win in like, 500 innings.
However, even though they are the home team, every inning they play lowers their chances because eventually Pujols/Holliday/Berkman is just going to run into one.
J/K this is true. Honestly though, I feel like if STL wins I want them to limp in and promptly get owned. I would hate to see them leapfrog over my Braves and go on to win it all.
that the most crushing defeat I can ever remember came in the playoffs against the Astros, and now it’s the Astros that can help control whether we even make it in this year…
I’m trying to mock all the people who were proclaiming the Cardinals’ infallibility in the 8th. That was supposed to be a hand doing a dismissive wanking motion. Apparently they don’t make animated gifs like they used to.
could he really be worse? Of course, there was one point when Fredi was canned by the Marlins that I was happy because I knew he’d wind up with the Braves…maybe I’m not the best person to ask for managerial recommendations.
Make batshit crazy moves, because when they fail no one will call you out on it or even if they do, you just rest on the laurels of your career wins, but if it works everyone calls you a genius
St. Louis needed a win at Houston to pull even with two games remaining, but the Cardinals lost 5-4 in 10 innings. With that game still in progress, the Braves began clearing out of the clubhouse, not even checking a score on their phones. All the televisions were switched off.
“This is a tough loss for me,” said Freeman, who came up three times with a runner at second and failed to come through. “The last thing I want to do is watch another ballgame.”
“I don’t really care about that,” Jones said. “I’ll find out what they did later on tonight or tomorrow. Right now, I’m just trying to flush this one and start focusing on Roy Oswalt,” who’ll start Tuesday for the Phillies.
"I don’t really care about that," Jones said./blockquote>
Pretty sure that’s literally what they said.
Don’t get me wrong, this was a crappy game and they have the right to be pissed at their lackluster offensive night, but for the team to throw their hands and say “meh, whatever happens I’ll find out tomorrow.” Something about now wanting to know where you stand… I can’t fathom that.
The point he’s trying to make is they need to take care of their own business. They’re not in a spot where it really matters what the Cardinals do if they just win.
You’re just trying to read what you want into that. Chipper probably hurt his leg badly running hard on the GIDP in the 8th.
And he remembers how mentally painful it was to be chained to the bench last year when the Braves made it to the playoffs.
I realize Chipper cares. I have nothing but respect for him. I understand the desire to move on after a tough loss, and I guess I understand not scoreboard watching- after all, the score will be the same tomorrow morning as it is tonight. I just feel that something needs to click, to change, to get us moving again, and I was kinda hoping that if they stayed and watched the ’stros pull off a win it might help them rest a little easier so they could come back fighting tomorrow.
If he’s focusing on what other teams are doing, he’s not solely focused upon what his team is doing.
It’s pretty clear he cares about how the Braves play, and that is by far more important. He can’t alter the outcome of the St. Louis game, so what happens there is unimportant.
let’s work with the assumption that somehow the braves pull off making the playoffs.
these back-to-back years of last minute drama in making the playoffs creates excitement (and a great deal of stress and heartburn for some of us – but excitement nonetheless) … if they were to get ousted again in the divisional series do the same rules apply; and by that i mean do fans once again say “what’s the point?”
the future seems bright on a lot of levels but i agree with the point that if you keep presenting resulting failure the college football obsessed south may revert to 80’s figures in attendance. (and yes i know they aren’t good now – but the playoffs last year … people showed up).
Personally, I’m excited for the next several years. I think that as the Phillies starters age and the Braves’ young arms enter their primes we have a really good shot at making a run at a division title rather soon. While this season may end in disappointment, I think that any fans that abandon ship now will be back within 2-3 years.
oh i’m on board for the long-haul … so i’m right there with you. just remember going to empty stadiums once a summer as a kid – then the early 90’s awesomeness – followed by the late 90’s/early 00’s seeming lack of support.
as a kid who grew up as a “tbs-er” in south carolina … it’s always been so hard to understand the city of atlanta’s seeming lack of interest. make sense?
let's go pirates!

STL 1, HOU 4 - BOT 4
Matt Downs two-run homer. 0 out.
AmgineRmEht - September 26, 2011
EOF back out for a 2nd inning, btw.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
Atlanta Braves minus Chipper = GCL Braves
joshant - September 26, 2011
he came back out to play 3rd though.
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
he knows what's on the line
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
WILL SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW CHIPPER GOT HURT? IS HE OKAY
TheMelkHasSpoiled - September 26, 2011

leedawg - September 26, 2011

Jtpdolphins2009 - September 26, 2011
Sprained labia.
/Just kidding. Chipper is still one of my favorite players.
Nabb1 - September 26, 2011
Old man
The only one who can hit, is hurt. Bodes well for us.
WienerDog - September 26, 2011
NICE ROUTE TO THAT BALL DIAZ. REALLY SOLID
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
But he hustles and clearly tries 100% 100% of the time.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
Never said perfect, just said that nothing was really sacrificed between he and Heyward.
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
But it really is. Heyward is superior in every way – and it’s not even close.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
Not true.
Diaz is probably a much better crazy white guy dancer than Heyward.
UMDBHIK - September 26, 2011
Probably a better gardener, too.
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
which is just false
heyward’s range >>>> Diaz
leedawg - September 26, 2011
We’ve been over all of this already, not worth bringing back up. I see what I see and make opinions accordingly. I’ve stated those, you disagree, we move on..
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
Damn, Downs got a hold of that ball.
delicious_dimes - September 26, 2011
good news 4-1 astros
unreel20 - September 26, 2011
Heyward would've caught that
joshant - September 26, 2011
Absolutely
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
you wonder why diaz is still out there now that lee is gone
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
bc heyward coming in would make some sense
though they could loogy us in the bottom of the inning if we put him in now
leedawg - September 26, 2011
Braves can clinch if Cardinals lose 3 games in the row
LEastCoastBears - September 26, 2011

LEastCoastBears - September 26, 2011
2, not 3.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
Yeah yeah
I still prefer 3
ducheneaux13 - September 26, 2011
Maybe
The Astros can win it for us, since we apparently can’t.
WienerDog - September 26, 2011
I would gladly give Chipper any part of my body
whatever he needs, whatever he just hurt, take mine!
thenightstallion - September 26, 2011
I was thinking that but I’m waiting on ACL surgery, so it’s better that you donate.

Jtpdolphins2009 - September 26, 2011
And the worst part?
It’s the second time. I got my left knee a few years ago.
Classic17 - September 26, 2011
Tore my ACL playing b-ball. I tell people it’s when I came down from dunking on someone. Truth is, I was back-peddling on a fast-break and leg twisted and I crumpled to the ground.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
Both mine were non contact.
Classic17 - September 26, 2011
If Chipper's seriously hurt and they make the playoffs...

unreel20 - September 26, 2011
if that's the case, im hoping for hinske in left and prado at 3rd
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
i would rather have Wilson at third defense wise Prado has been horrible at 3rd defensively
unreel20 - September 26, 2011
it's ok guys, as long as chipper keeps hitting groud rule doubles and home runs we'll be fine
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
Yeah, except he can't drive himself in from second.
Nabb1 - September 26, 2011
well it's not going to matter cuz he gets stranded on base all the time anyways
Stephen M - September 26, 2011

LEastCoastBears - September 26, 2011

Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
If the shoe was on the other foot, wouldn't you be trying to keep Philly from the post season?
thenightstallion - September 26, 2011
No, I’d just try to get everyone rested for the playoffs.
Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
These days, pitching against us = rest.
NCChopper - September 26, 2011
Going for the kill. Although, if the Phillies do knock the Braves out, they would get the wild card winner instead of Arizona or Milwaukee. Not sure I’d want to go with the hot hand, but still. Either that, or they are just vindictive dickwads.
Nabb1 - September 26, 2011
Heyward needs to channel his inner Cerrano
Jtpdolphins2009 - September 26, 2011

leedawg - September 26, 2011

Stephen M - September 26, 2011
An oblique injury.
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
he's been awful since coming back off the DL
it appears he rushed back far too soon

Nabb1 - September 26, 2011
Did you really, really just figure that out?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 26, 2011
No, I am aware of that. Just a little surprised he would dip that deeply into the bullpen for what is really a meaningless game for them. I expect them to play to win.
Nabb1 - September 26, 2011

wpf3211 - September 26, 2011

I don’t think prado or mccann have hit a ball hard when it mattered in 6 years
bdr9977 - September 26, 2011
Fredi, are you even trying to win this game?
Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011

That’s why leaving in Diaz was so freaking bizarre. They just pulled the LHP. Unlikely, though possible, that they were going to put in 2 LHP back to back. Plus Heyward can remain in the game for defense and additional PAs.
pbrfan - September 26, 2011
I suppose if he does lead off
and we go 1-2-3, we could put the pitcher in the 2 spot and take out prado… not a wise move though
leedawg - September 26, 2011
We really do suck everybody
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
1 hit in the last 5 innings
you may be on to something
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
1 run in 21 innings against the Nats. End of discussion
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
See Prado, Martin and McCann, Brian for starters
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
Pujols strikes out.
nypeach83 - September 26, 2011
And, blah, Alex.
nypeach83 - September 26, 2011
taking bets on the crowd booing the braves at some point this series?
DustinSmith - September 26, 2011
youre implying that we'd actually have a crowd, and that said crowd would actually make some noise
Stephen M - September 26, 2011
In the bottom of the 9th
If we lose, are losing, it will happen.
thenightstallion - September 26, 2011
Our crowd should stfu. They can’t even fill the stadium for the most important series of the year against a hated division rival.
delicious_dimes - September 26, 2011
i have a hard time attacking fans who aren’t at turner field when im not there either… whether i live in los angeles or not
SuperHeyward - September 26, 2011
I have a hard time attacking with the way we have been playing lol
Jtpdolphins2009 - September 26, 2011
yeah its like being mad at pirate fans…
SuperHeyward - September 26, 2011
That makes one of us.
delicious_dimes - September 26, 2011
It’s a MONDAY night.
This is foozball country.
Turner field is in a bad location, bad transportation, no bars, NOTHING around Turner field to do except get into trouble and the game.
Lay-off the crowd size. >geez<
I think the post from last year (or earlier this year) needs to be resurrected (it was a beautiful piece on why attendance is so low.
Having the last series (the most important one) during the start of a work week is ridiculous.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
I hate the Phillies and I hate their fans… but they would be going fucking insane if our situations were reversed right now. Maybe you don’t think that gives the team a lift but I wholeheartedly disagree. I’m tired of our lame fans year after year not being able to sell out playoff atmosphere games for a super young, super exciting team.
delicious_dimes - September 26, 2011
if we are losing game 3 with it all on the line… They won’t be Braves fans if they don’t boo
SuperHeyward - September 26, 2011
Hell atleast the cards only got 1

AmgineRmEht - September 26, 2011
We would’ve scored zero.

Not as bad as Red Sox. :)
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
actually… about the same
SuperHeyward - September 26, 2011
Their payroll >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ours
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
This.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 26, 2011
We’ve still done everything possible to insure we don’t play in October. Payroll is irrelevant. The point is that we both had our very talented teams on the field and have screwed the proverbial pooch.
GumpBrave - September 26, 2011
When you spend as much money as the Red Sox and you collapse like this, I’ll say that’s more impressive (depressing) than our collapse.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
GumpBrave - September 26, 2011
Higher payroll (usually) does mean more talent. More talented teams (usually) do better.
What’s the problem?
Sure the Red Sox have played against (what one would consider) tougher opponents but the Marlins/Mets/gNats have HUSSTLE and HEART! #Eckstein.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
we had a 10.5 game lead in the wild card about 3 1/2 weeks ago

GumpBrave - September 26, 2011
IMO the only positive things to say at this point are along the lines of “well we had a great year, til this last month”, and that itself is quite negative.
abraves257 - September 26, 2011
I share your view.

I tend to think being positive is generally good, but not if you really have to struggle to force it. We’re all just really frustrated.

Bizarros - September 26, 2011
So to add some humor to this evening, some outrageously hot guy just rode his bike straight into a steel pole right outside my window, saw the whole thing
abraves257 - September 26, 2011

AmgineRmEht - September 26, 2011

Jtpdolphins2009 - September 26, 2011

How appropriate.
UMDBHIK - September 26, 2011
Here’s hoping the Astros hang on.
nypeach83 - September 26, 2011
GIDP
And Chipper wins the 100-yard mosey to first! Ding, ding ding!
WienerDog - September 26, 2011
chipper shoulda taken himself out of the game earlier. he couldn't field that ball
and he’s clearly a liability out there running the bases, and can’t even finish his swing.
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
he has 2 hits, go jump off a bridge
15ks - September 26, 2011

TennesseeQuackAttack8 - September 26, 2011
I just become an Astros fan right now
who else?
joshant - September 26, 2011
if you think being a Braves fan is depressing right now
just watch the Astros for a week
rg643 - September 26, 2011
Astros can at least score runs
Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
We're gonna watch them for three days.
Classic17 - September 26, 2011
Cards down to their last 9 outs. Time to add on Stros
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
Worth pointing out that the best player for all of September probably won’t get a PA this game.
And the Braves best reliever apparently won’t pitch either. Send in the rookie ROOGY instead.
pbrfan - September 26, 2011
just like the series in Philly in early sept
where Kimbrel didn’t pitch an inning in that series
leedawg - September 26, 2011
Baltimore and Tampa still winning
mebravesfan - September 26, 2011
ohh shut up...
Bizarros - September 26, 2011
Seriously, I only have a vague idea of this winning, but remembering that other teams do it makes me angry.
GumpBrave - September 26, 2011
Awesome check this out....on the philly broadcast...I live in philly and am forced to listen to these guys....
Brad lidge had 18 oppurtunities to get a double play this year…and had ZERO doubleplays and guess what….we ground in a god damn double play. AMAZING!!!
supyoscn - September 26, 2011
Chipper has skills like that
DustinSmith - September 26, 2011
Piss off
He homered and hit a ground rule double earlier, and he’s playing on a bad leg and limping badly. Not to mention he’s a hall of famer. You’re the worst.
thenightstallion - September 26, 2011
rec'd

He was the greatest of them all.
UMDBHIK - September 26, 2011

15ks - September 26, 2011
I know the man who met Andy Griffith. The man who met Andy Griffith is a good friend of mine. You sir are no man who met Andy Griffith.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
I saw a movie with Andy Griffith (can’t remember the name) where he plays a radio broadcaster and is an all around asshole….
“Face in the Dark” I think it is?
Good movie.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
I pitched against Prince Fielder. He couldn’t hit my changeup. I’m pretty sure he could now, though…
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
if only we had 3 all-star caliber hitters due up next inning
oh wait
15ks - September 26, 2011
If only we could score 3 runs o wait...you say we have scored 4 in the last 26 innings?
DustinSmith - September 26, 2011
Wow, Detroit scored 14 runs.
I didn’t know a team could score that many.
drtybird68 - September 26, 2011
i was thinking that earlier lol. our season high is 11
Stephen M - September 26, 2011

WeStillHaveBobby - September 26, 2011

Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
I don’t understand why we can’t win. I just don’t.
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - September 26, 2011
Makes 2 of us
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
3 of us...
WeStillHaveBobby - September 26, 2011
But you’ve watched this game, right? It’s really clear to me.
Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
God is clearly William Tecumseh Sherman.
And he still hates Atlanta.
UMDBHIK - September 26, 2011
Each game requires special criteria for winning, sometimes it’s overwhelming offense sometimes it’s pitching. Whatever it is, we have recently failed in doing so. Not to mention that other teams have had good luck and we have had bad luck. That combined with what appears to be apathy/communicable comas is what happened.
GumpBrave - September 26, 2011
Is Heyward still on our team?
Are we good enough to just have him riding the pine?
biggjoe404 - September 26, 2011
If anyone reaches I assume he will finally go in for Diaz, but anything could happen at this point
pbrfan - September 26, 2011
Heyward is chilling with Kawakami.
Sir Veza - September 26, 2011
good inning for Varvaro

justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011

joshant - September 26, 2011
BRIAN IS COSTING US MORE THAN ANYONE I'M NOT AFRAID TO SAY IT. FIRE FREDI FIRE PARRISH
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
pretty sure mccan doesn't use parrish as his hitting coach
he goes back to his dad
inertia53 - September 26, 2011
Prado is hurting us worse than McCann.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
false
McCann, then Bourn, then Prado…..
leedawg - September 26, 2011
I'm with Lee
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
McCann and Bourn are valuable on defense.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
defense is not our issue
in a vacuum, you are correct. However scoring runs is our biggest issue and they are the biggest hindrance to us scoring right now
leedawg - September 26, 2011
I think that having a guy who’s hit as bad as Prado has hit all season constantly in the 2-spot is a bigger hinderance to scoring runs than having the best C in baseball hit 5/6 even during a 2 month skid.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
it doesn't matter where you put them if everyone isn't hitting
we’ve got 2 people hitting… that is the problem. If it was only Prado and Mac struggling, your point would make more sense
leedawg - September 26, 2011
My point makes perfect sense when you are directly comparing two guys and trying to say who has hurt the team worse – the guy getting the most ABs.
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2011
You will have to show me the stats
wpf3211 - September 26, 2011
Prado a close second

What does it even matter if we make the playoffs?

Heyward playing poorly for the whole season has been the biggest key to our demise, unfortunately.
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
.387 OBP in September. And he’s having a better year than Prado, who continues to flounder daily in a premium batting order spot. The biggest key to the demise are the losses to the Cardinals.

His OBP is high because he’s been batting 8th
AmgineRmEht - September 26, 2011
/McLouth'd
leedawg - September 26, 2011
That is a claim that is made a lot and is never supported with data. Walks and strikeouts are higher in the 8th spot because more pitches are thrown out of the zone. A hitter with a very good batting eye can take advantage of that.
And the point about Prado stands. He’s been worse for the entire season.

best case scenario?:
stros win now
stros win in 16 innings
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
For my health, now.
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
The best case is that they win in like, 500 innings.
However, even though they are the home team, every inning they play lowers their chances because eventually Pujols/Holliday/Berkman is just going to run into one.
Ivan the Great - September 26, 2011
The latter
Make STL burn out their bullpen.
mebravesfan - September 26, 2011
So would the Stros though
austinhb - September 26, 2011
they don’t have to worry about conserving starters for the postseason, though. And with rosters expanded, this doesn’t matter quite as much…
Kudzu Kid - September 26, 2011
The stros have a bullpen?
J/K this is true. Honestly though, I feel like if STL wins I want them to limp in and promptly get owned. I would hate to see them leapfrog over my Braves and go on to win it all.

cali viking - September 26, 2011
http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=310926115&teams=philadelphia-phillies-vs-atlanta-braves
“The last thing I want to do is watch another ballgame.”
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
“I don’t really care about that,” Jones said. “I’ll find out what they did later on tonight or tomorrow. Right now, I’m just trying to flush this one and start focusing on Roy Oswalt,” who’ll start Tuesday for the Phillies.
walknbalk - September 26, 2011

nobody
can accuse chipper of not caring whether they win or not. the dude cares a lot.
i think you are misunderstanding.
walknbalk - September 26, 2011
The point he’s trying to make is they need to take care of their own business. They’re not in a spot where it really matters what the Cardinals do if they just win.
You’re just trying to read what you want into that. Chipper probably hurt his leg badly running hard on the GIDP in the 8th.
And he remembers how mentally painful it was to be chained to the bench last year when the Braves made it to the playoffs.
AmgineRmEht - September 26, 2011
Actually by losing they lost the right to control their destiny
so yes…the cards game DID matter.
DustinSmith - September 26, 2011
Well i suppose they could win out and beat the cards in the extra game so I suppose they still do to some extent
DustinSmith - September 26, 2011
technically would still control our own destiny even if the astros won
Would just involve winning game 163
leedawg - September 26, 2011
Honestly not trying to start an argument

It should be noted
That the Braves went into play for Game #161 last year in the same spot: 1.0 ahead in the Wild Card with two to go.

I think the braves take the next two and and on to the playoffs!

gondee's point ...
let’s work with the assumption that somehow the braves pull off making the playoffs.
these back-to-back years of last minute drama in making the playoffs creates excitement (and a great deal of stress and heartburn for some of us – but excitement nonetheless) … if they were to get ousted again in the divisional series do the same rules apply; and by that i mean do fans once again say “what’s the point?”
the future seems bright on a lot of levels but i agree with the point that if you keep presenting resulting failure the college football obsessed south may revert to 80’s figures in attendance. (and yes i know they aren’t good now – but the playoffs last year … people showed up).
thoughts?

Personally, I’m excited for the next several years. I think that as the Phillies starters age and the Braves’ young arms enter their primes we have a really good shot at making a run at a division title rather soon. While this season may end in disappointment, I think that any fans that abandon ship now will be back within 2-3 years.

oh i’m on board for the long-haul … so i’m right there with you. just remember going to empty stadiums once a summer as a kid – then the early 90’s awesomeness – followed by the late 90’s/early 00’s seeming lack of support.
as a kid who grew up as a “tbs-er” in south carolina … it’s always been so hard to understand the city of atlanta’s seeming lack of interest. make sense?

Chipper said his right knee was hurting all night not just when he hit 3B bag. When asked if he could play Tues., he said “probably.”#Braves
