Despite all the arguing that we as baseball fans, sports fans, and internet geeks alike, actually do on the internet, sometimes there are stark reminders of how meaningless numbers, history, and statistics actually are, when it comes to present day, present moment. Who would have actually thought that Brian Burres would beat the Braves? Who would have actually imagined Tim Hudson would lose to the Pirates? Who would have fathomed, that the worst team in Major League Baseball would take the first two games in a three-game series and knock the Atlanta Braves out of first place in the NL East? Certainly, not I. But unfortunately, such is reality, and we now stand in second place, and tonight rely on Derek Lowe (and Andrew Miller) of all people, to pitch like a winner(s), avoid the sweep, and put us back on the right track.
So, I'm going to take an alternative approach to talking up tonight's game, since apparently going the educated and analytical route and predicting sweeps has more or less blown up in my face, and at this rate, I don't think anyone's going to want me covering any future series, regardless of if gondeee, mvhs, pac, or Ben want to take a series off. Call me back up in 2-3 weeks when the Phillies are on deck, because I remember Brad Lidge had an epic meltdown last year during a series I covered, where Matt Diaz laid down the world's greatest bunt that resulted in an RBI, two errors, and a game-ender.
ZACH DUKE. ZACH. DUKE. His name even sounds majestic. Like a real, world beating ace of a horse, who is probably going to have a dominant performance tonight. ZACH DUKE was born on April 19th. I was born on April 19th. He's also from Waco, Texas. On his 10th birthday back in 1993, the Waco Siege ended with some raging fires that resulted in nearly 80 cumulative deaths. What people don't realize is that the fires were started by the heat ZACH DUKE was throwing, while playing catch too close to some fields. ZACH DUKE married a minor league emcee, two years after breaking into the big leagues. ZACH DUKE is also a former all-star, in 2009. But not just any all-star - an injury replacement all-star - because replacing Matt Cain with ZACH DUKE isn't a downgrade; it's an upgrade. Charlie Manuel wasn't dumb; he knew he had to pick a Giant to represent the squad, so he picked an injured one, so he could bring in a true winner instead to replace him later.
Completely ignore ZACH DUKE'S numbers. Ignore that throughout his career, he is 24 games under a .500 winning record. Ignore the mediocre 4.44 career ERA, and the mediocre K/9, xFIP and WHIP. And most importantly, ignore ZACH DUKE'S 2-4 record against Atlanta, with hitters hitting him at a rate of .346 and an .888 OPS in over 250 palte appearances, because that's clearly irrelevant to ZACH DUKE'S true ability. ZACH DUKE is a winner. ZACH DUKE is an all-star. But don't ignore ZACH DUKE'S blazing 87 mph fastball, and his knee-buckling 81 mph change. When the ball slams the brakes like that, we're pretty much toast.
Not to mention that he's a lefty pitcher, so I'm sure he's going to give Derrek Lee, and Melky Cabrera, and Alex Gonzalez some fits today.
And as for Derek Lowe, let's just look back to happier times, and try to funnel these winning thoughts to our $15 million dollar man. Don't ever doubt the power of positive thinking.

Id say so.
oVecKid - September 8, 2010
I've got to go to calculus now and ill be driving home through at least half the game, but I would like to post something from my own facebook, earlier this morning:
OK Derek Lowe, I’ve been really patient, I’m pretty sure I’m the only Braves fan left that still likes you. You made me look like an ass when you had that good start and I said you’d win 18 games. I know you’re 37 and you have a bone chip lodged in your elbow but we HAVE to win tonight. Go get ’em.
15ks - September 8, 2010
I like Derek, too.
sddbaker - September 8, 2010
just got home
and safe to say he’ll be getting the pep talk before the rest of his starts
15ks - September 8, 2010
roy....!
I think it would have been nice if you hadn’t photo-shopped out the fireballs that flock to ZACH DUKE when he thinks about throwing his fastball… It’s bad karma to downplay the opposing pitcher like that.
BMacAttack - September 8, 2010
If there was ever another night to start KK.....I think that tonight was it
El Soro - September 8, 2010
Money on the Phillies?
Lowe is due for one of his bi-monthly good starts. That’s about all I have.
Still…I’d rather see him pitch with his left arm that allow Kawakami onto that mound with a tomahawk on his chest. Whatever arguments you can make about what Ken’s record should be and what little run support he’s gotten, especially in the season’s first few months, the fact remains that he’s about a million miles from where he needs to be right now as a pitcher and thus should be kept a million miles from a starting assignment.
Sam Jethroe - September 8, 2010
Secret plan...
Braves score 6 runs in the first two innings, Lowe exits with pain in his elbow. KK comes in and finishes it out for a 6-3 (maybe 4) victory.

cthabeerman - September 8, 2010
I was going more with the bizzaro vibe of the opening….the bizzaro vibe of the series so far….I keep forgetting how militant some of the commenters can be……knamean??
El Soro - September 8, 2010
Ah, okay.
Kawakami has some borderline irrational supporters (and similarly unbalanced critics, as well), so I took that at face value. Sorry.
Sam Jethroe - September 8, 2010
Well, I’m only a supporter now because I have a serious problem with the way he was treated this year (with incomplete information as to why, of course), but I think he has a serious case of Brad Lidge Syndrome and (in all likelihood) a dead arm…just my opinion.
El Soro - September 8, 2010
I'd call it 1990 Marty Clary Syndrome
Or 1981 Tommy Boggs…or 1985 Pascual Perez. A guy who should be 5-5, 4-6, something on that order instead of 1-10 or whatever the case may be. Bad run support and mounting pressure are a bad brew and eventually it takes it’s toll.
Irrespective of how we got here, we’re here and he’s not suited to start for us the rest of this season. He’s probably been treated badly but I’m not in the frame of mind to run him out there in an effort to make him feel better.
Sam Jethroe - September 8, 2010
The world's tallest man...
Is 8’1" and 364 pounds. Despite the difference in height, I’d say Lowe’s locks net him at least a couple more pounds, and that thunderous right arm of him adds at least another 17.
8’, 384 pounds, mother effers. Hurling baseballs or boulders, Lowe is a fierce competitor.
Sadly, it is rumored that one of Lowe’s ancestors was crushed in the face by a come-backer in ancient times, giving the Israelites a 1-0 victory over the Philistines.
That’s right, Derek Lowe’s ancestors were Philistines.
Let’s hope he can break free of his past and get the Braves a win tonight.
Fuck the Philistines!!
-C
cthabeerman - September 8, 2010
cthabeerman FTW
El Soro - September 8, 2010
I know...
Everyone hates Lowe’s contract, myself included… But at the time it was the front office’s best option… Would we rather be paying AJ Burnett $85 mil? I would just be nice if he could start looking like a guy who deserves even half what he’s making… Huddy’s only making A little more than half…
HansonManCrush - September 8, 2010 via mobile
I’d rather have that money to spend on someone that is, you know, worth it, and have not spent it on someone who isn’t.
Or Sabathia, I’d have rather had Sabathia than Lowikami.

Too bad we're not one of those west coast teams that Sabathia committed himself to choosing.

You have been negative in every game thread lately....
Just sayin’
HEYJUDE - September 8, 2010
You have a very low threshold for "negative"
Sam Jethroe - September 8, 2010
If so,
many more on here do as well. They are choosing to no longer participate in the game threads because of the negativity.
HEYJUDE - September 8, 2010
If you're talking about problems you're having with posters in the game threads
You’re thinking about someone other than me. If you see me in a game thread it’s at the beginning before the first pitch is thrown or during a rain delay. I’m working on a desktop here. I can hear my TV from here but I can’t see it from here. During a game, I’m in there watching what’s going on.
Sam Jethroe - September 8, 2010
I got a good feelin' about tonight...let's leave Pittsburgh with a Victory!
NCChopper - September 8, 2010
Wouldn't it be nice if we just crushed the Pirates tonight and won like 20-0 ? We need one of those games.
BravesFan2010 - September 8, 2010
Marlins are sitting Hanely, who's red hot....
….but the lineup they’re running out there tonight looks like they can mash lefties.
Undocorkscrew - September 8, 2010
So I'm glad this happened
for the longest time we feared the day we fall behind the Phillies, now it has happened and we have to face it.
I’m not happy it happened per say, just that it did now. We are behind, we no longer have to fear that- we can just look forward and not have the pressure of being in first for so long
MikeTrain - September 8, 2010
Maybe this is the best possible thing that could happen to the Braves. I think they got complacent for a long time, and hopefully they will wake up now.
BravesFan2010 - September 8, 2010
Its been said several times already...
But worth reiterating… This team is all about the cime from behind, last at bat victory… Philly be dammed VICTORY WILL BE OURS!!!
HansonManCrush - September 8, 2010 via mobile
The obvious question is... If you don't believe we can win...
Why are ya watchin’?
SuperNewb - September 8, 2010
i believe we can win today
but not the division.
I’m hoping we win a wild card which we can do.
We have to figure out the road woes. Our road record is just terrible.
Finally, bobby needs to sit Derek Lee and Alex Gonzalez. Neither one have done anything yet and we have capable backups in Brooks Conrad and Freddie Freeman. Give the 2 young guys a shot
Jaymin Patel - September 8, 2010
You've got to be kidding...
Alex Gonzalez has been putting in work since he’s come here. He’s been a remarkable improvement over Yunel’s production earlier in the season, and if you can’t see that, you’re obviously not paying attention.
-C
cthabeerman - September 8, 2010
+1000
HEYJUDE - September 8, 2010
i strong disagree
he might have had a few nice games but his overall production is not the same as it was in Toronto. Yes he was upgrade over Yunel but there might have been other SS out there who could have been had like Stephen Drew for example. Plus Alex has made alot of errors and I know I’m not the only one to notice that. He makes good plays but he messes up on routine plays.
Jaymin Patel - September 8, 2010
7 errors in his first 11 games...
1 since. He’s been making incredible plays look routine since making the adjustment.
These stats are a couple days old, but I imagine they’re still close enough to exact to use: .354 OBP with runners on, .369 with RISP. Hit 18 XBH in 48 games, six more than Yunel had in 75 games. His OBP since coming to the Braves is above league average, especially with runners on.
Might have been available doesn’t equal was available. Drew is still with the D-Backs, and it’s not like the Braves were the only team out there w/ SS needs.

SS451 - September 8, 2010

BravesRaleigh - September 8, 2010
Well he dominated us for 5 innings, but no.

I say it can happen but chances are about 15%
Jaymin Patel - September 8, 2010

we could sign him to a one year deal every year for the next three, cause he only hits like that on contract years….

thanks marlins

BullManUGA - September 8, 2010
All the fisting is giving him a bulge?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 8, 2010

This is why we’re the 2nd best offense in the NL. Look like shit for a few games, then score 10 runs for the next few.
Scott Coleman - September 8, 2010
I hope they find a way to time it so some of those 10 run games come against the Phillies.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 8, 2010
We have been doing that lately. Nothing, nothing, nothing, 10 runs, nothing, nothing.
We are using up our runs.
BullManUGA - September 8, 2010
Not a very good baseball strategy
KJDH2154 - September 8, 2010
That’s why our odds for making the playoffs is so high. All those thing factor in run differential and these blow out games (after narrow losses) really make us computers’s favorite.

Only gentle kidding
SS451 - September 8, 2010

Then Cowboys dominating the ’skins on Sunday Night Football IN AMERICA!
KJDH2154 - September 8, 2010
And then the first loss of the season on the following Saturday…
Scott Coleman - September 8, 2010
We’ll see about that….Foles is gonna get eaten alive by our d-line, I can’t wait
KJDH2154 - September 8, 2010
I’m looking forward to it. They’re expecting a crowd bigger than the one for Oregon last year (which was ESPN’s college football game of the year for ‘09) and that was the best sporting event I’ve ever been to….even if we did lose in OT.
Scott Coleman - September 8, 2010
Get myself banned from here for cursing.

there'd have to be a heyward homer in there right?
BravesRaleigh - September 8, 2010
Yes.
If Heyward finishes the season at .900 OPS, I think he’d be a lock for ROY.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 8, 2010
Officially a rout.

leedawg - September 8, 2010
Seriously? How many PAs?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 8, 2010
not sure on PA's
but he’s already got 506 AB’s so he’s already qualified
leedawg - September 8, 2010
Wow. He really came out of nowhere to pass everyone. And he is already qualified.
Infante needs 100 more PAs to qualify without taking penalties. I wonder if he’ll get that many. If he can, he might hold onto it. Otherwise, it’s going to depend on if Gonzalez’s bat cools down.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 8, 2010
30+ hits in 15 games will do that
Mr. Sanchez - September 8, 2010
Surely, he can’t keep that pace up, right?

Jaymin Patel - September 8, 2010
We could have used some of these runs in the first two games.
BullManUGA - September 8, 2010
Is it too late to take 6 of these runs and apply it to yesterdays game?
Andeezy - September 8, 2010
Wouldn't it be amazing if...
There were a rule that, say, five times during the year you could transfer up to 3 runs from one game to an immediately preceding or succeeding game?
Well no, actually. That would suck. Maybe if only the Braves could do it.
SS451 - September 8, 2010
Can we at least give the Marlins 6 of our runs?
Andeezy - September 8, 2010
I’d prefer a rule where we can transfer the Phillies’ runs to the Braves whenever we feel like it.

OT: MattE and Leslee Diaz Family Foundation
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned on TC before (J-Hey tweeted about it yesterday), but if you’re on Facebook, become a fan of Matty’s foundation here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MattE-and-Leslee-Diaz-Family-Foundation/343319968141
“For every Facebook fan up to 10,000 fans that are added by the end of the baseball season, our family will donate five dollars to the foundation. Half of the money we will go to helping one of our favorite charities (Parker Street Ministries) renovate its building to help disadvantaged kids get their school work done, some will go to sending envoy to help in Uganda (jengauganda.org) and the rest will go to getting the foundation up and running (web site etc).”

Can we keep things light
By making the headline of the recap something like, “Bobby Cox out to derail Infante’s batting title hopes” Then write like 3 paragraphs on the reckless decision to put conrad in for him. Then like 3 sentences about the game? You’re just gonna do a series recap right after you can talk about everything else there.
15ks - September 8, 2010
