For the rest of the season we'll keep a daily tally of the Atlanta Braves chances of making the post season, along with daily commentary. Also consider this a daily open thread for general chatting.
| NL East | W | L | PCT | GB | STRK | Magic Num | Playoff Odds |
| Braves | 79 | 57 | .581 | - | W1 | 26 | 96.2% |
| Phillies | 78 | 58 | .574 | 1 | W5 | 28 | 82% |
Last night's game was my first time visiting whatever-the-Marlins-stadium-is-called-these-days. I know they're building a new stadium soon, but I wanted to see this one so I could compare the two later on. To say this is the worst stadium in baseball is to admit that I'm surprised the Marlins are even allowed to play there. It's like if the Braves had to play at the Georgia Dome, and couldn't change any of the decor, all they could add was an outfield wall with advertising. The Fish can't get their new stadium soon enough.
As bad as their stadium is I was very impressed with the emotion and enthusiasm of the Florida crowd. I imagine this is what the Atlanta crowd would be if you removed all the fairweather fans -- all that would be left is a small group of devoted and loud fans. I'll take the fairweather crowd so that we can at least pretend the stadium is full sometimes.
I looked all over for a Cuban sandwich, but never found one. Mostly uninspired food choices, though they did have one of my favorite ballpark foods -- barbeque nachos. The dude that fixed them for me loaded me up with about three helpings of barbeque, so much that I couldn't even finish it all (and remember, this is my favorite ballpark food). I started to get the meat sweats.
It was a weird game from the standpoint that Josh Johnson looked so in control to about half the Braves batters, then so helpless against the other half. It made for a lot of activity on the basepaths, and a lot of frustrating LOBs. Johnson is a really fast worker, too. Made for a quick game.
I'm still in debate mode as to whether or not to go to today's game. The Marlins tickets are criminally overpriced -- a further testament to why many fans don't attend. There is only one section that will be in the shade today, and those tickets are over $50. My pasty whiteness needs shade on a day like today. Eh, I'll probably end up going, but that means the Braves better win if I'm going to shell out $50 bucks.

They'd better win, even if you have to suffer second degree sunburns....
And you’d better like it.

Ugh....
McLouth? WHY!?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 5, 2010
Sunday day off for Ankiel though it could have been Hinske and Cabrera out there in LF/CF though defensively Cabrera/McLouth is better.

It will be Mike Minor’s 5th start and another opportunity to show he’s gonna be a bigtime stud major league starter for a long time.
Game Notes has this item of interest: Brian McCann has hit .321 in his last 50 games, with 9 2B, 11 HR, 38 RBI and .410 OBP
Meanwhile, it will be Wolf (10-10, 4.76) v. Kendrick (9-7, 4.72) today (1:35 ET) in Philadelphia, PA.

I could not disagree more about some of your assessments of the Marlins stadium. First I agree, the food isnt very good. and the stadium was clearly not meant for baseball. However, I have been to a far amount of marlins games over the years and almsot never see a good segment of hardcore marlins fans. I see a couple of idiots, a couple of fans from the opposing team and a couple of good quality fans who sit quietly (usually older couples). The idiots are hardly good fans, becuase they rarely know any of their own players.
Also, while I agree the Marlins stadium is horrible i could not disagree more that the new stadium couldn’t come faster. I feel the new stadium thing is like a bad dream that one day I will awake from. A team that has an average attendence of like 11,000 (if they are lucky). Doesn’t deserve a new stadium. Some fans might come back to see the new stadium, and it might do slightly better if is in a differnet area of south Florida, but there is no reason the taxpayers should pay for a stadium when those same taxpayers clealry don’t give a crap about the team.
and the fans shouldnt give a crap until they get a new owner, which won’t happen anytime soon.
I thought i would link this here because it is moderately relevant especially the lin in the article about how the taxpayers were duped into beleiving this was a good idea.

They should have been contracted...
them and one more (not sure who I’d say the second team that should go).
Mr. Sanchez - September 5, 2010
i dont know if i would go that far…there are plenty of places where baseball could suceed, hell put another team in NY ( they could probably have three teams that all draw a good attendence)
Swo12bv - September 6, 2010
my thoughts on that...
while it CAN succeed in places, I think with the premium prices of games, in tickets, television dollars, player salaries, etc, exclusivity in product helps increase demand, and reducing overall number of players improves the quality of those players and the play while helping control salary costs.

"good quality fans who sit quietly" "usually older couples"
Sounds fun.
