Braves Quote For The Day ... The Great Billy Wagner

From the mother-ship, great info about Billy Wagner:

Since 1901, there have only been six seasons in which a pitcher threw at least 50 innings at 38 or older and struck out more than 11 batters per nine innings. Wagner's the only one to exceed 12. He's the only one to exceed 13. Wagner's in a spot all his own.

I'm still disappointed that Wagner says he want's to retire at season's end. He will likely regret this in a couple of years. He's walking away from one heck of a renaissance. A couple more seasons close to this one and he could certainly be talked about as a serious Hall of Fame candidate. Besides, I really like the look of him in a Braves uniform, and I like the possibility of a Kimbrel, Venters, Wagner, 7th, 8th, and 9th even more!

By the way, you should check out who is second in K/9.

Wow....

Wagner: 13.2 K/9, 1.32 ERA

Venters: 9.9 K/9, 1.78 ERA

Saito: 11.6 K/9, 2.52 ERA

Michael Dunn: 12.0 K/9, 1.00 ERA

Kyle Farnsworth: 11.1 K/9, 5.79 ERA

Craig Kimbrel:…….17.1 K/9, 0.45 ERA

I know Farnsworth seems out of place there, but just posted the ones who K more than 1 an inning.

Kimbrel with a 17.1 K/9?

That’s absurd.

Krimbel numbers are insane . I heard he's filthy too, but I wouldn't know.I fell asleep the last 3 times I had a chance to see for myself. Such FAIL.
Wags! Don't GO!!!

he’s the first serious, proven, lights-out closer we’ve had since Smoltz. Do what it takes, FW!

Seriously, BillyWags is a serious HOF candidate

now, already.

surely, you cannot be suggesting this is not a true fact.

He's on the (ever-longer growing)

“Should be in the HoF, but isn’t” list.

Perhaps someday closers will get their due, but God knows who’ll make it and who won’t.

Justin Timberlake is such a douchebag.

I know you all know, but I figured I’d just put it out there.

Cry me a riverrrrrrrrrr!

You’re just mad that he brought his sexy back.

And how is that related to this?

Dick in a box was pretty funny though
I always though he was. Plus a whining little Mama's Boy @ that. But that was random.LOL.
Yeah...he'll be missed, but...

The $7MM salary he stood to make next year could be spent can be spent better elsewhere. Like going towards Crawford or Werth’s salary next year. :-)

respect

I respect a guy who can walk away from the game when he is playing at an elite level. I respect him even more cause he’s driven to be with his family.

I'm glad Wagner gets to finish his amazing career, pitching for the manager he always wanted to play for.

I think he’s really happy where he’s at this year, and it shows.
I wish he’d be here next year, but I respect his decision to put his family life first.

And, I’m glad I was able to see him pitch in person several times. I lived in Houston for a while and got to see him there and then this year as a Brave on my trip to ATL on 9/1 when he got the save against the Mets.

Well said NC, Those exact words were in my mind.
I'm not really a fan of such weird stats

Although I’m sure there are “stat boys” at ESPN that spend all 40 hours a week trying to find weird abnormalities like this.

Anyways, if you want to read some really good Billy Wagner stuff, check out the huge article on him in SI this week.

He leaves no doubt in the SI article (linked in a new FanShot)
Throughout baseball, people cannot believe Wagner is retiring at the end of the season, regardless of how far into October the Braves play, regardless of what he does. He looks like he could go another two years, easy. His fastball is still in the mid-90s and it moves, and these days he’ll throw a full-count breaking ball for a strike. Jones, Wagner’s ancient contemporary who is coming back for more next year, calls his teammate “a freak” (that’s a compliment), but Wagner is not so impressed with himself. “I’m not as good as I was,” he says. By retiring, he’s leaving at least $6 million on the table. But Wagner is leaving no wiggle room. He won’t be pulling, he said, “a Favre.” He’s made, he says, more money than he could ever need—close to $100 million.
