Jason Heyward had a great series and got to see one of his best friends, Freddie Freeman, debut as well. Overall win for the series.
The Braves played a solid series all-around and won three out of the four games. They opened up winning the first three in relatively easy fashion, but were unable to close out the sweep last night against Johan Santana. These are the types of series you get from playoff-caliber teams.
Game 1 Recap:
Game 2 Recap:
Game 3 Recap:
Game 4 Recap:
What We Liked:
Jason Heyward: The Rookie of the Year candidate went 9-17 with three doubles, a home run, and a walk. In two of the games he recorded four hits and he had seven RBI for the series. This was a dominant series for Heyward, who has the second highest wOBA in the N.L. over the past 14 games, behind only Carlos Gonzalez.
Omar Infante: The leadoff man went 7-17 with a walk, setting the Braves up for multiple scores, especially in the first and third games of the series. Omar looks on his way to winning the batting title and it truly seems like he will "autosingle" every time he comes up to the plate.
Tommy Hanson: Hanson completely dominated the Mets in the series' third game. He lasted seven innings and allowed just two base-runners. The only hit allowed was to David Wright, one of the top third basemen in baseball. He struck out just four, but it was awesome to see him put on such a great performance after struggling in his past two starts.
More after the jump:

The Catchers: Both Brian McCann and David Ross produced when they started this series. Combined, they went 7-13 with two walks, two home runs, and six RBI. The Braves have, without a doubt, the best catching combination in baseball and this is truly one of the reasons the Braves have had such a potent offense all year. McCann has been the most productive hitter, and when he is out Ross has been able to keep up so the offense does not miss a beat.
What We Didn't Like:
Alex Gonzalez: Seabass went just 1-11 with a walk, one RBI, and one run this series. It seemed as though all cylinders were firing for the whole team, but it wasn't so for Gonzalez. He was even sat down for Brooks Conrad in the third game of the series with Infante moving over to shortstop (his flexibility is lovely). Gonzalez will have to start producing better or this may become a regular occurrence.
Left Field: Matt Diaz and Eric Hinske combined to go 0-12 this series, which is absolutely unacceptable. Three lefties started, so a majority if the blame can be put on Diaz. He has to start being more consistent and so does Hinske. If not, they may suffer a similar fate as Gonzalez. Infante may see some time in left or Melky Cabrera may get some more starts if neither of the platoon partners produce.
Peter Moylan: He didn't necessarily have a bad series, but his performance last night was ugly. He threw 14 pitches and only five of them were strikes, which is definitely worrisome. Moylan was once the best Braves reliever, but he has become very inconsistent and somewhat unreliable.
Number of the Series: 9
The Braves scored nine in both of the first two games, giving them a great chance to win the series. In addition to scoring a bunch of runs in the first two games of the series, according to the "Simple Rating System" on Baseball-Reference, the Braves are the best team in the National League with a score of 0.9. The closest teams are the Phillies and Padres at 0.6. The only two teams in baseball with a better score are the Yankees (1.4) and Rays (1.2). Basically, that says that the Braves have been the best team in the National League based on how many runs they have scored, allowed, and their overall strength of schedule to date.

A broom movement would have been great, but we’ll take the 75 percenter.

Seriously
You would think we would be able to sweep a team every once in a while, this is starting to get uncanny.
king of games - September 3, 2010
We do have the Pirates
on tap after this weekend……..
UMDBHIK - September 3, 2010
Defense
Will be the death knell for this team. The Braves have the third most errors in baseball (and the NL), and the National league “contender” closest to them (St.L, and Colorado) are 10th and 11th. It may be close to beating a dead horse, but this team pretty much sucks on defense and is almost a lock to commit one boneheaded little league play each game. The pitching bails them out with a high GIDP ratio which puts the total UER in the middle of the pack of the league, but still considerably above SF, Phil, and Cincy and twice as many as SD.

I'm really hoping
for a series win in Miami. But I’ll be disappointed with the team if they don’t SWEEP Pittsburgh.
jayjaxon - September 3, 2010
This picture of Heyward just screams photoshop! I can seem someone cropping him out and fencing with some enemy.
aceiii222 - September 3, 2010

Haha. Good Photoshoping and TC don’t mix
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
Funny, I had this exact same thought
And then the same idea with the lightsaber and everything.

Mr. Sanchez - September 3, 2010
this is pretty freaking epic

Gabby Sanchez suspended 3 games.....
…..but he’ll likely appeal it because he wants to take part in the ‘spoiler’ role the Marlins are gunning for. He really doesn’t have a case, as he was filmed on his knees throwing punches while Morgan was being held down, but he’ll appeal anyway to delay it.
But here’s to hoping he doesn’t. A series in Miami without Sanchez, Uggla, Ross, Cantu, and Nolasco would make me feel a lot more comfortable, especially with the back-end of our rotation going.
Undocorkscrew - September 3, 2010
for that hit he put on Morgan he deserves
nothing. It was a awesome hit. The dude leaped in the air and closed lined him with his elbow.

RichmondBraves - September 3, 2010

GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010

VivaLosBravos - September 3, 2010
What do you want him to do
dress in drag and do the hula?
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
I wasn’t going to be specific.
VivaLosBravos - September 3, 2010
i already posted it in the other post
Pitcher Chris Volstad has been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Morgan on two occasions and for fighting during the benches-clearing incident; pitcher Alex Sanabia has received a five-game suspension for fighting; first baseman Gaby Sanchez has received a three-game suspension for his aggressive actions and fighting; and pitcher Jose Veras has been fined for his aggressive actions and comments during the incident.
joshant - September 3, 2010
What about Morgan?
swainzy - September 3, 2010
Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan has been suspended for eight games for a series of recent incidents, including his role in a benches-clearing brawl Wednesday against the Florida Marlins.
In its announcement Friday, Major League Baseball cited the following incidents in its decision to suspend Morgan:
• Aug. 28 at home: Morgan unnecessarily ran into St. Louis Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson in the bottom of the eighth.
• Aug. 31 at the Marlins: Morgan directed inappropriate comments toward fans during the 10th inning.
• Wednesday at Florida: Morgan charged the mound in the top of the sixth inning, fought during the ensuing benches-clearing incident and directed inappropriate gestures and comments towards the fans as he left the field.
The eight-game ban is in addition to the seven-game suspension and undisclosed fine issued to Morgan for his inappropriate actions in an Aug. 21 game at Philadelphia. Morgan has appealed the suspension.

Did you guys read Jayson Stark's chat on ESPN today?
That guy is the man.
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
I did. He completely and utterly pwned the guy who posed the last question
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
That's what's wrong with baseball these days
Bud Selig has done nothing but turn it into a Broadway musical in October.
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
link?

GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
thanks
joshant - September 3, 2010
exactly. His chat also brings up a good point- If we win 1 game against the Phuckers in 2 series, we’re guaranteed the NLE crown if we tie. That’s something to chew on
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
what happens if we tie and a team like the Giants has the Wild Card? Do we win the East, or do we play a playoff game?
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
That’s more of a complicated issue. We’d probably have to go to a playoff game against Phi, although considering that we have the better Head to Head record than PHI my guess is it would be in Atlanta.
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
We would. That’s what’s happened in the AL Central for the past few years. Playoff game between the two teams tied, and loser is eliminated from the playoff because they aren’t 1st in the WC
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
IF that happened
I have a feeling TC would be kinda, sorta busy that day.
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
I actually can't wait to be here when the playoffs start.
jayjaxon - September 3, 2010
Just a bit. If we make it to the playoffs we’re gonna need just a pre-game GT
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
More like 6…and that’s assuming Justin doesn’t show up.
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
haha. God, that would be ugly
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
In all seriousness, I’m thinking we’d do a Pre-Game thread, a thread for innings 1-5 and a thread for innings 6-9.
Scott Coleman - September 3, 2010
I'd agree with that
I’d also do a PreGT for that last series vs. Phi
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
I would love to see a
Rays-Braves World Series. I think it would be cool to see Texas go to one too.
jayjaxon - September 3, 2010
I want Twins-Braves. You know, 1991 rematch and all.
MBL1 - September 3, 2010 via mobile
I wouldn’t mind Yankees/Braves
GoBravesNY - September 3, 2010
i would....
i hate the yankees….!!!!!!!
Hektor DiPaula - September 3, 2010
Twins Braves
would be great. 19-year wait for revenge!
