Playoff Hunt
Myrtle Beach -The Pelicans won their game, but so did Kinston, meaning Myrtle Beach is eliminated from the playoffs.
Gwinnett 7, Durham 6
Dan Nelson had a great AAA debut, knocking out a three run homer. That's 2 great nights in a row for him, as he walked reached base all 6 times he came up for Mississippi last night, walking 5 times. Matt Young seemed like a prime candidate to be selected in the Rule 5 Draft last offseason, and after the year he's put up in AAA I'd find it hard to believe that a team couldn't use him on their bench next year. If the Braves don't protect him on the 40 man roster in the offseason, and it seems likely that they won't, there's a very good chance he's in the Majors with another team in 2011. The wild version of Todd Redmond showed up tonight, and while he's seemed more inconsistent this season than last year, he's actually had a considerably better year and he's another guy who seems like he could find a place in the Majors with a different team next year. As infrequently as Cristhian Martinez has been used this year, he's thrown 72.1 innings between AAA and the Majors this year compared to 130.1 between AA and the Majors last year, he's had a great season, with a combined 3.11 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. He's been masterful at keeping the walks down, with a 1.4 BB/9 rate in AAA and an outstanding 0.4 BB/9 rate in the Majors.
Mississippi 2, West Tennessee 4
Myke Jones homered for the second night. The athletic shortstop has had a fine season, playing for Rome, Myrtle Beach, and now Mississippi, he's combined to hit .264 with a .748 OPS, rapping out 31 doubles, 15 homers, driving in 61 runs, and stealing 21 bases. The only real knock on his season is that he's made 43 errors in 121 games, a huge number, but a lot of the errors come from being athletic enough to get to balls that other shortstops simply can't reach. Really, he profiles best as a second baseman, a move that would immediately help his defense, and he could turn out to be an Orlando Hudson type Major Leaguer. Cole Miles made his AA debut, hitting a triple. Jake Thompson continues to impress here at the end of the season. He hasn't allowed a walk in his last 2 starts, covering 13 innings.
Myrtle Beach 5, Wilmington 4
Braeden Schlehuber hit a 2 run homer in the 7th, breaking his 0-21 slump, and Cody Johnson followed with his own 2 run homer in the 8th to lead the Pelicans to victory. Chris Curley made his Pelicans debut and rapped out 2 hits, including a double, and walked. the 23 year old non drafted free agent has played for Danville, Rome, and Myrtle Beach this year, combining to hit .221 with a .604 OPS in 217 at bats while playing all around the infield. Zeke Spruill rebounded from a rough stretch to put up a quality start tonight.
Rome 0, West Virginia 3
The R-Braves collected just 3 hits tonight, one of them being Joey Terdoslavich's triple. Dan Jurik only allowed 1 earned run over 5 innings and he's put up a 3.15 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP in 68.2 innings between the GCL, Danville, and Rome. After posting a 4.31 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP in 39.2 innings for Myrtle Beach, David Francis was demoted to Rome and instead of puting he went to work, putting up good numbers in relief, a 2.60 eRA and a 1.08 WHIP in 27.2 innings for Rome.

Get it done, Wren!

It’s going to be a monumental shame if we lose Young because we’re too stupid to give him a 40 man roster spot. I don’t see any reason we couldn’t non-tender Melky, who’s going to be way overpaid relative to his production next year, and see what Young’s got. Hasn’t he played a lot of CF before?
J-Freak - September 3, 2010
For his career he has 270 games in LF, 148 in CF, 86 at 2B, and 27 in RF. This year he has 71 in LF, 31 in CF, 27 at 2B, and 2 in RF.

This! As weak as we are in the OF there is no reason not to give this guy a shot.

You know what frustrates the hell out of me?
How our CFs have a knack for looking completely lost for stretches of time, and then they have one or two moments to keep them in the lineup for a few days.
Tonight was a perfect example. Melky looked like he was running in sand in the 1st inning on the Beltran hit. Anyone who can run a 40-yard dash in anything less that 7 seconds could make that play. Melky, though, trots the whole way and it ends up being a triple and then a run on the Gonzalez throw. To be honest, that was a play that could warrant benching a guy for a few games. But then Melky has to go 2-for-3 with a walk and have a solid night at the plate. Now, Bobby will continue to trot him and his pathetic OPS and bad defense out there for the next few days.
Ugh.

My name is J-Freak, and I support this message.

Looks like you got the stats mixed up for Redmond and Martinez.
ajones2522 - September 3, 2010
Joking, or do you actually think I did?
cbwilk - September 3, 2010
No I’m talking about the part where you talk about BB/9 rates and said that Redmond has pitched in the majors the past two years.
ajones2522 - September 3, 2010
Yes, you’re right. Never actually put Martinez’s name in the sentence. Thanks.

Injury update?...
Pastornicky hasn’t played all week. Wilikin Ramirez has been sitting for longer than that. Jesus Sucre has been out almost two weeks.
Are these guys done for the year?
Mr. Sanchez - September 3, 2010
I think Ramirez is fine, he didn’t say anything about it when I saw him the other day. He did get outrighted off the 40 man roster. You might be right on Pastornicky and Sucre.
cbwilk - September 3, 2010
I guess this has been discussed before but what’s the book on Wilkin Ramirez? I thought he was considered a half-way decent prospect (at least someone we could hope to play a decent CF and contribute some right handed power though probably hit for a low avg) but now I hear he’s not playing and has been outrighted off the 40 man roster? Seems like the Braves are pretty stubborn when it comes to giving their young OFers a chance (Matt Young, Mitch Jones, Willie Cabrera, Ramirez).
chopc - September 3, 2010
To be fair Matt Young and Mitch Jones aren’t necessarily young, at least from a baseball standpoint, at 27 and 32 respectively. When you get to that age an haven’t been given a chance in the Majors yet then, whether it’s fair or not, teams tend to write you off and aren’t likely to give you a chance either.
For the other 3 guys you mentioned, they all have their issues. Young can play center, but really he’s limited to left field because of his arm, which is way below average. He doesn’t have any pop, so you have to wonder if he could hit the ball with any kind of authority in the Majors. Jones can play LF and FR decently enough, and play 1B as well, but he’s not exactly a plus at any of those positions. He has a ton of power, but generally hits for a lower average and strikes out a ton. There’s good reason to believe that those would be worse in the Majors and the power wouldn’t be enough to offset it. Cabrera can play all 3 outfield positions, but because of his lack of arm and relative lack of speed he’s best in LF and his bat just doesn’t profile well there. He doesn’t have much power and doesn’t have much speed and at best he looks like he could be the right handed side of a weak LF platoon.
Ramirez is a more sure defender than Jones, profiling best in RF, but he has the same issues, only worse. He’s got a ton of power, but just doesn’t make much contact. He’s never had a full season with fewer than 120 strikeouts. In 188 games at AAA he’s hitting just .239 and his OPS is only .715, showing that his power isn’t enough to offset the lack of contact and poor ability to take a walk. He’s a tantalizing player because all the physical skills are there and he’s a huge, strong guy, but with the lack of in game results it’s easy to see why now 2 teams have outrighted him off their 40 man this season.
None of this should be read to mean that I don’t like these players, quite the opposite actually. I like all of them a lot and could see how each one could be useful to a Major League team. But it is worth pointing out that they all have their flaws and weaknesses and it’s easy to see why a team might not give them a chance.

Pulled quad
Pastornicky isn’t playing because of pulled quad.
Sevenpointthree - September 3, 2010
thanks

Next season in AA/AAA
Who do you guys expect to see in AA/AAA in 2011. Could be an interesting year in the minors in 2011
Sevenpointthree - September 3, 2010
I'd expect Teheran and Randall Delgado in AA or AAA...
Cody Johnson is probably back in AA to try again. Pastornicky I’d assume is back in AA, perhaps with Myke Jones at 2B. Jordan Schafer will be with one or the other, same with Jesus Sucre. Cory Gearrin and Scott Diamond are probably on the AAA staff. Yasser Gomez in AAA, JJ Hoover in AA. LV Ware and Cole Miles in AA. Jacob Thompson, Kyle Cofield, and Richard Sullivan would be on one or the other pitching staff, hard to guess which, or if they’d be starting or relieving. I’d expect those, among of course several others, as part of the Mississippi and Gwinnett rosters.
Mr. Sanchez - September 3, 2010
Starters tonight...
Brandon Beachy in AAA
Randall Delgado in AA (Teheran has to be shut down considering Hoover, Thompson, and now Delgado have had two turns since his last start)
Myrtle has an off day
Steven Kent in Rome
Mr. Sanchez - September 3, 2010
Teheran
Teheran had a start with Mississippi in their last home game, but it was rained out in the first inning.
