Is it me, or do we play these guys every week?
The Braves and Marlins will face off for the final time on Florida this season, and you know the Fish will bring a fight to us like they always do. Speaking of fights, I'm sure you've all seen the incident with Nyjer Morgan charging the mound and was then laid out by Gabby Sanchez. That was one of the more enjoyable moments of the season for me, especially since a little punk like Morgan got absolutely laid out. We'll have to see if any Marlins are suspended for the 3-game series this weekend, but I'm guessing it'll take MLB a few days to sort everything out.
Anyways, let's take a look at the Fish:
Offense:
Runs: 604 (7th)
BA: .257 (9th)
OBP: .322 (12th)
SLG: .407 (8th)
wOBA: .321 (9th)
BB/K: 0.38 (15th)
SB: 75 (10th)
You know the Marlins, but we'll go over them. Dan Uggla is having yet another fantastic season (.883OPS, .383wOBA), but he's been bothered by a bad groin over the last week and is questionable for all 3 games this weekend. If he missed any at all, it would be absolutely huge. The man kills the Braves. Hanley Ramirez also continues to be a force in the lineup, though we'll miss the always entertaining Hanley vs. Hudson matchup. Gabby Sanchez (.825OPS, .362wOBA) is having one of the better rookie seasons in the NL, but there's a chance he could miss the series with the inevitable suspension that he'll face from the brawl on Wednesday. Mike Stanton is a huge power threat, but he strikes out in nearly 35% of his at-bats. Logan Morrison is a feel-good story, and he's been pretty good since coming up to the Majors two weeks ago. Cameron Maybin (.659OPS) got his chance to play everyday with the trade of Cody Ross, but he continues to not live up to the hype. Catcher Ronny Paulino is also currently suspended 50 games for testing positive for steroids.
A look at the pitching match-ups and more after the jump...

Friday, 7:10EST:
Look who's back! Kenshin Kawakami will be making his first start for Atlanta since late-June, and it's a safe bet to think all eyes will be on him in his return. Despite the bad record, Kenshin is still a very good #5 starter and I'd much rather have him than Derek Lowe at this point. Even with the ugly 1-9 record, Kenshin has solid numbers (4.75ERA, 4.19FIP, 4.50xFIP) and will hopefully be able to shut down a pretty weak Marlins lineup. Kawakami faced the Marlins in Florida on May 25th, and took the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits.
Andrew Miller, like Kawakami, will be filling in for an injured starter (Ricky Nolasco) and has only started one other game this season. Miller is a lefty, and features a fastball, slider and changeup. Once a top prospect, he still hasn't lived up to the billing of a top-of-the-rotation starter that so many viewed him as. He hasn't faced the Braves in 2010.
Saturday, 7:10EST:
Jurrjens will be looking to right the ship on Saturday, and he's been pretty awful in his last few starts. He's winless on the road, and features an ERA of 6.89. Ugh. We really need Jair to step up in September to get us to the playoffs. With Lowe on the shelf, the fact is that Jurrjens is actually our 2nd most experience starting pitcher right now. JJ faced the Marlins on a rainy July night, and took the no-decision after allowing four runs over six innings.
Josh Johnson, when right, is arguably the best pitcher in baseball. The problem is that he's been anything but dominant as of late. Johnson (2.50FIP, 3.23xFIP) doesn't walk many (2.28BB/9) and strikes out a ton (8.89K/9), and opponents are only hitting .227 against him. Johnson has struggled in the last month, but dominated the Atlanta hitters for six innings in his last start.
Sunday, 12:10EST:
Mike Minor comes into Sunday's start on regular rest for the 2nd time this season, and he continues to impress as he gets adjusted to the Major Leagues. Minor didn't look great in his last start against the Mets, but gutted out five innings of 3-run baseball. Check this stat out: In the games that Minor has started, the Braves have scored 4, 10, 16 and 9 runs. Wow. Kenshin Kawakami, he is not.
Alex Sanabia, a righty, s also a rookie pitcher having a pretty solid season. He doesn't strike out many hitters (5.86K/9), but doesn't walk any either (1.88BB/9). The numbers are a bit skewed for Sanabia (3.98ERA, 3.78FIP, 4.45xFIP), but we all know how the Braves typically fare against young, soft-tossing pitchers. He's faced Atlanta twice this season, and record a no-decision in both games.
Also, who the hell schedules a Sunday game for 9:10 on the West Coast? Thanks, Marlins. It's not like sleep is important or anything.
Bullpen:
ERA: 4.17 (11th)
FIP: 4.16 (12th)
xFIP: 4.35 (13th)
BAA: .250 (7th)
K/BB: 1.89 (15th)
HR/9: 0.90 (8th)
WHIP: 1.40 (8th)
They're a below average bunch, and they're led by erratic closer Leo Nunez. It seems like Nunez (3.76ERA, 3.07FIP, 2.95xFIP) is all-or-nothing in the 9th innings, but has filthy stuff when he's on. Besides Nunez, guys like Clay Hensley, Brian Sanches and lefty Renyel Pinto have all been solid in middle relief. Burke Badenhop and Jose Veras have also been good in limited time for the Fish. It's a bit odd, though. Most of the relievers in Florida's 'pen have good numbers, but as a whole, they're pretty bad. It's something to think about.
As for the series, I never like playing in Florida. Maybe it's the crowds of 3,500 people each night?* Or maybe it's the football field that they play on? Perhaps it's the horrible announcers and weather? Who knows? Either way, I'm not terribly optimistic and I see the Braves only winning one game in Florida. Johnson vs. Jurrjens is a huge mismatch (especially with Jair on the road), and we never seem to hit young lefties very well.
*With the exception of the always entertaining Puff Daddy concerts. The fans PACK Sun Life Stadium for special nights like those.

Best. Poll. Ever.
Jman781 - September 3, 2010
not true
the poll with one option that was in fact 2 options (yes or no), was the best I have ever seen. I don’t even remember the question, but that was fantastic.
Andy Braves Fan - September 3, 2010
True...
I appreciated this one though.
Jman781 - September 3, 2010
Crap/
I voted “Yes.” but I’d like to change my vote to “I’ve never been forced to watch a game which involved listening to the Marlins announcers”. Lil’ help?
Richard R - September 3, 2010
Trust me...the answer is yes
El Soro - September 3, 2010
KK deserves a bit more respect
No, he’s not Huddy or even Jurrjens, but I think FanGraphs nailed it the other day when they observed that when you have two starters go down (Medlen and Lowe) you’re still sending out a guy that’s at LEAST replacement level if not better. Most other teams are running out a replacement level pitcher for the #5 spot from game #5, while we’re fortunate enough to be doing that in game #134 after two guys get hurt.
blwfish - September 3, 2010
ugh
I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t get lit up by the Fish.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 3, 2010
that's not really my point
Any replacement level guy stands a good chance of being lit up by any MLB team on any given day. (Even an elite pitcher has an interesting chance of being bombed out of a game by even the worst MLB team, although clearly that’s much lower than for a replacement level guy.) The point is that effectively our #7 starter IS a replacement level player, rather than a AAA scrub.
blwfish - September 3, 2010
he also gets paid $7 million, so that sort of nullifies the luxury.
As a team we are spending over 50% of our payroll on starting pitchers – by far the most in baseball (I think the average is around 33%). I understand the circumstances by which that came about and I’m not complaining about the results, it’s just that people need to understand how all things are connected. Having a 7th starter who is above replacement level is nice in the abstract, but it’s also part of the reason our outfield, for example, has been a carousel of mediocrity.
DCP916 - September 3, 2010
we’re in first place in our division with the 2nd best record in the NL. Maybe the rest of the league should be spending more on pitching.
telemakhos - September 3, 2010
Four of those above him make the minimum though...
so it balances out.
Mr. Sanchez - September 3, 2010
Maybe that’s a reflection on the way the roster is built?
And as for KK’s contract, remember the context in which it was offered: we were very short of starting pitching in ’08. Would you rather spend $7m on KK with a shot at some upside, or $400k on, say, Jo-Jo Reyes and Charlie Morton? Rather than complain about it in 2010 when Wren and the front office have stockpiled an embarrassment of pitching riches, consider how we felt when we heard that KK would be displacing on of the demonstrably below-replacement guys who had been filling in the back – and even middle – of the rotation.
In a sense, you’re complaining that the organization did too well recruiting and developing its young talent, which is the biggest reason that $7M for KK looks really bad right now. (No, it doesn’t look great to anyone else either.)
blwfish - September 3, 2010
The Braves are most certainly not spending 50% of their payroll on starting pitchers.
Lowe makes $15mil, Hudson makes $9mil, Kawakami makes $7mil….the rest make league minimum. I’ll round that to about $33mil. Is the team’s payroll $66mil? I think not. In fact, that $33mil is closer to the 33% average that you threw out, than it is to 50%.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 3, 2010
*Hudson may actually make closer to $10mil, but that doesn’t alter the numbers too terribly much.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 3, 2010
But we have some of the best pitching in the majors.
And though our hitting may be underpayed, they do not underperform (6.5 R/G since Chipper went out)
iamthesgt - September 3, 2010
2-0 already, no outs
Ugh.
blwfish - September 3, 2010
He's average, not replacement
Replacement level would be a AAAA player – someone who is freely available and below average. GI Joe.
buzzdeadwax - September 3, 2010
Even better!
Not that many clubs have an average starter for #5, let alone for #7.
blwfish - September 3, 2010
KK is our #6...
Lowe is the #7. Get it right.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 3, 2010
But Lowe has a winning ability
he can be the 2nd
joshant - September 3, 2010
It’s not KK’s fault that his family line suffers from a blood curse, damn’t! Meanwhile, Lowe seems to have captured a few leprechauns.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 3, 2010
maybe not the right place to voice this opinion
but i like the fact that baseball has some players like Nyjer Morgan..with the exception of the ones like Manny who don’t believe in stretching or practice laziness doesn’t belong to this exception..Morgan plays fast and full speed ahead and probably doesn’t give a damn about what anybody thinks..you either hate that or you love it.. see Ty Cobb..although Cobb accomplished more in his career than Morgan could ever do in a week. I can’t defend running into the catcher in St. Louis or his antics after the brawl..but everything else, I would say is fair game.
SidGlaus - September 3, 2010
to add to this..not saying I like Nyjer Morgan..
but I do like the fact there are players that play full speed..is Morgan a good role model? Definitely Not.
SidGlaus - September 3, 2010
I kind of agree
BTW, the Cobb analogy is reversed. He accomplished more in a week than Morgan could in a career.
Anyway, the St Louis play was a cheap shot, but it wasn’t too terribly egregious, and I don’t really have an issue with anything else he’s done – especially stealing bases. That has to be one of the dumbest “rules” I’ve ever heard of. He is a punk, but I think it’s getting blown out of proportion, and the Marlins, to me, look like a bunch of whiny little girls.
golfballs03 - September 3, 2010
lol your right on the analogy..sorry early in the morning for me..just flew back in.
the stealing bases is definitely a dumb rule..they were down 15-4? or whatever it was, my view is never give up. Yeah maybe stealing 3rd was arrogant..but so what, they were getting slaughtered..just never give up.
SidGlaus - September 3, 2010
The Marlins had just proven that it was possible to score 14 runs in four innings. The Nats were down 11, not fifteen. I don’t see why anyone should think that the Nats should be assuming that they can’t score 12 runs in five innings, to say nothing of 14 in four. For whatever else Morgan has done that pissed people off, I think he (and the Nats) were right to go steal those bags.
Should the Fillies have stopped trying to win last night in Colorado?
How about the Braves in Cincinnati? Was it offensive that Brooks Conrad was swinging for the fences down three runs in the bottom of the ninth? I mean, the probability of winning that game at that point was probably even worse than that of the Nats coming back from 14-3 in the 4th.
That “rule” is really stupid.
blwfish - September 3, 2010
The Braves win probability at the beginning of the 9th was 0.2%.
Before Conrad hit that homer, it was still only 18.5%.
At the beginning of the 5th inning, the chance of the Nationals winning was 0.8%. Morgan’s two steals in the 4th combined increased their chance of winning by 0.1%.
Here are the links to the play logs with W% expectancies:
http://www.fangraphs.com/plays.aspx?date=2010-05-20&team=Braves&dh=0&season=2010
http://www.fangraphs.com/plays.aspx?date=2010-09-01&team=Marlins&dh=0
As for should the Phillies have stopped trying to win in Colorado? Yes, definitely.
iamthesgt - September 3, 2010
I agree.
The Phillies should stop trying so hard to win. They’re just going to injure their fragile, overpaid players further in a futile attempt to catch the Braves. :)
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 3, 2010
Thanks for confirming what I suspected.
I don’t think anyone (other than the Reds) really thought that the Braves should have quit swinging in the 9th, and the win% was higher for the Nats even if it was probably less likely that the Nats would actually pull off the 0.2%.
And yeah, Morgan only improved it by 0.1%, but so what?
You’re right, though: the Fillies should have quit in the 2nd inning. :-(
blwfish - September 3, 2010
That’s because the Marlins ARE a bunch of whiny girls. They’ve got the rule backwards: you don’t steal bases when you’re UP by ten runs. You play station to station So as not to show up the team you’re laying the smackdiwn on. Not only is stealing when you’re DOWN by ten acceptable, but it may be necessary to keep any smidgen of a faint hope of getting back in it alive. Just. because the Marlins wanted them to lay down and die and make the final five innings a cakewalk for them doesn’t give them the right to be indignant when the Nats decide they’d rather at least try, even if the end result is still a loss.
Morgan is far from the classiest guy around, but in this particular instance he’s really being sold as a much bigger villain than he was, presumably because he upset Wes Helms’ view of “how the game should be played” (read:other team voluntarily loses to Helms’ mates when they are already under an early deficit).
J-Freak - September 3, 2010 via mobile
Arg
Please forgive my typos. Rushed that out before class, forgot to double-check it for errors.
J-Freak - September 3, 2010 via mobile
Wes was just talking shit.
They threw at Morgan because they don’t like him. Everything else is a smokescreen. I have literally never heard anyone voice the idea that you shouldn’t steal bases when you’re down. It’s patently absurd. As you wrote, it’s when you’re up big that you take your foot off the gas a little.
Sam Jethroe - September 3, 2010

“In the NL East, the Phillies have more home dates (16-13) and more down-and-outers (15-12) on their schedule than do the Braves.”
Time to start playing well on the road and make sure to beat the teams we should beat… Let’s do it tonight.
SuperNewb - September 3, 2010
Aside from the 6 games against the braves, the best team the phillies have to face the rest of the way is the marlins.
telemakhos - September 3, 2010
Gotta do better against St Louis than we did the first time...
Is it common to have two four game series against one team in the same year?
SuperNewb - September 3, 2010
we did against the dodgers.. common enough i guess
15ks - September 3, 2010
i dont know....
i love my team…. and i know we have a real shot at the playoffs… BUT… i really don’t like this particular series…. there’s something about it (stupid marlins)… i don’t know…. if we win one of three I’ll be glad….
Hektor DiPaula - September 3, 2010
I’ll always worry more about playing the Fish and Nats, than the Phils.
Whenever the Marlins play the Braves, they come to freaking play. If they had a rough patch or something, suddenly they seem to ‘come to’, etc.
The funny thing is, the Mets aren’t even in the conversation, and they have the biggest payroll. So sad it’s funny.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 3, 2010
“They call him Dan Uggla!” Does that annoy the hell outta anyone else? Not to mention it sounds completely stupid!
bACEballstud - September 3, 2010
Rich Waltz is an addled twerp.
He always gives those clowns all of his little puerile, mancrush nicknames. When I saw that Jacobs was going to the Royals, my first thought was “Poor Rich is crying himself to sleep tonight. He won’t have his sweet ‘Jake!!’ to yammer about all next year.”
Sam Jethroe - September 3, 2010
Out of curiosity...
How do so many of y’all even know what the Marlins’ announcers sound like? Maybe because I am close to home, I do not have to resort to MLB Extra Innings, Siruis or other methods of listening/watching the Bravos from afar.
Jman781 - September 3, 2010
i was wondering the same thing.
I mean, what was it?…..the Marlins hadn’t been featured in a Sunday Night Baseball game in like 10 years.
how the hell do all these people know what their announcers sound like?
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 3, 2010
I live in Florida so I’m in a Marlins region so the only time I get to see the Braves are when they are playing Florida, or on national TV, unless I visit my parents house where they have Extra Innings
pfciv - September 3, 2010
Do you see the Bright House ads for MLB Extra Innings?
I had to make those ads. They really wanted a picture of a ballpark, but SunLiphinRobbieShark stadium was always too empty, and the Trop is a dump. In the end, it turned out to be a really Photoshopped version of Safeco Field. Any graphics/baseball park aficionado would easily tell that it’s during a Red Sox/Mariners game.
royhobbs - September 3, 2010
I have the Extra Innings package.
Up until last two years or so, if both team’s networks covered a game, they would choose one of the two to feature, with no input from the viewer. These days, thay give you access to both so you can choose, but in years past, I would occasionally get stuck listening to Waltz and Hutton and it’s sheer fucking torture.
Sam Jethroe - September 3, 2010
I live in Florida and have DirecTV but when the Braves play the Marlins the Braves channels are blacked out and we are forced to listen to those other idiots.
bACEballstud - September 3, 2010
I'm just
happy for Kenshin. He’s taken all the adversity this year like a true class act. I really hope the offense shows up for him this time around. And the bullpen doesn’t decide to blow any leads he may acquire.
Good luck tonight KK!
UMDBHIK - September 3, 2010
3 game suspension for Gaby after the clotheslining. Doubt he’s got anything resembling an appeal case, maybe he’ll man up and accept it, which would mean we don’t have to put up with him at all this series.

Please Gaby
take the time off!
jayjaxon - September 3, 2010
Pitcher Chris Volstad has been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Morgan on two occasions and for fighting during the benches-clearing incident; pitcher Alex Sanabia has received a five-game suspension for fighting; first baseman Gaby Sanchez has received a three-game suspension for his aggressive actions and fighting; and pitcher Jose Veras has been fined for his aggressive actions and comments during the incident.
joshant - September 3, 2010
via ESPN
All but two of the suspensions were scheduled to begin Friday, barring appeals. Sanabia’s suspension was set to begin Wednesday in order to avoid overlapping with fellow pitcher Volstad’s, and Listach’s suspension is scheduled to begin Sunday to avoid overlapping with Riggleman’s. Looks like we might not have to worry about Sanchez who has hurt us this year.
bACEballstud - September 3, 2010
Thank you mvhs for the poll question.
I live in Florida and have to watch the Marlins broadcast when the Braves play them. I can’t stand their broadcasters. They act like FoxTrax is a Bible and the Marlins do no wrong. When the Marlins are winning they act like Marlins are a far supierior team to the Braves and when they are losing they knew it was coming. And they constantly call the Marlins the Fish come on their name is the Marlins. They make Chip look like half an announcer Vin Scully is.
I feel a lot better now with that rant out of the way
bravesforever16 - September 3, 2010
can someone help me out...
i’m a little dense sometimes, but the game says it’s scheduled for 12:10 on sunday, then the poster says this:
“Also, who the hell schedules a Sunday game for 9:10 on the West Coast? Thanks, Marlins. It’s not like sleep is important or anything.”
is it for 9:10 or 12:10, and why is it discussing west coast? i’m confused.
