Bobby Cox won his 2,500 game on Saturday afternoon. It just took him a little longer than he wanted.
Derek Lowe and the Braves bullpen was great on Saturday, and brought the Braves a much needed win to end their 4-game losing streak. Lowe continued his dominance in September and gutted out five innings, and didn't allow a runner to score. He struck out four and only walked one, and kept the Braves in the game until the offense could do it's thing.
The Braves scored first in the 3rd inning on an error. Brian McCann hit a sharp grounder at shift-shortstop Alberto Gonzalez. Gonzalez stopped the ball, but made a poor throw to 1st that got away from Adam Dunn. Lowe scored easily from from 3rd. Jason Heyward tried to score as well, but was thrown out at the plate. The offense remained relatively quiet for the next few innings, but came alive in the 6th. Derrek Lee doubled in Martin Prado from 2nd, and Alex Gonzalez delivered the big blow with a monster 3-run HR into left field to put the Braves up 5-0.
The bullpen was fantastic as usual, and Moylan, Venters, Kimbrel and Wagner all worked a scoreless inning. The 'pen struck out five and only gave up one hit, but did walk four as well.
Tomorrow's game will start at 1:35, and it'll be Brandon Beachy making his 2nd career start. Livan Hernandez (gulp.) will start for the Nats, so don't expect much offense.
Go Braves.

Lowe
has been dynamite in September. I think Tim and Lowe switched bodies. Like Freaky Friday or somethin.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
Hah, I’ve been thinking the same thing.
tomahawklove - September 25, 2010
Yeah
He’s pitching like an ace, which is awesome. Gives me some hope if we get into the playoffs – especially if JJ can’t go.
sag969 - September 26, 2010
Great win.
Btw. Most of us live on the east coast. 10:35 is either really early or really late!
Jman781 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
It's his time, pacific for some reason...
the game is at 1:35 on Turner Field time.
Mr. Sanchez - September 25, 2010
Yeah
Time should be posted relative to the team’s time. So if its an east coast team, post the east coast time!
sag969 - September 26, 2010
Lovely WIN today!

I guess the redskins are to blame for the early start
ottie - September 25, 2010 via mobile
10:35? God... damn...
SuperNewb - September 25, 2010
Ummm...
The MLB.com Schedule says the game is at 1:35 tomorrow.
AndiRose - September 25, 2010
Yeah. I figure it’s either a typo or someone is referencing Pacific TIme for some reason.
Zontar - September 25, 2010
mvhsbball lives in Arizona.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
well played mauer
15ks - September 25, 2010
That explains that then. :)
AndiRose - September 25, 2010
Now you all know my pain with Sunday morning games
fixed though. Thanks.
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010
Actually, it would be kind of cool to wake up to baseball.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
It is, I love the 10:35a weekend starts. It’s the 4p weekday starts that suck for us West Coast Braves fans.
Yakker - September 25, 2010
Yeah, I'll be at least following the game while at the bar eating breakfast.
But I think one TV for the Saints game is all I’m going to get.
AllSaintsDay - September 26, 2010
yeah mvhs
is arizona
15ks - September 25, 2010
Damn it
2-1 Padres
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
decent win today.
let’s see if we can go 6-1 or, better yet, 7-0 the last games of the season. that may get us in :P
Jareth Cutestory - September 25, 2010
Congrats, Bobby
Wins feel good don’t they? Let’s do it 7 more times.
hawves - September 25, 2010
Are any of you watching this SD/Cincy game?
There’s absolutely no one at Petco Park, and this could potentially be a preview of a 1st round playoff game.
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010
we need a gapper from ocab right now
15ks - September 25, 2010
weak
15ks - September 25, 2010
Crazy, right?
Although I think that matchup would mean we’d be out of the playoffs, so I’m hoping it doesn’t come to pass.
Yakker - September 25, 2010
Grrr, I’ve got Yankees/Red Sox
That rivalry is kind of boring to me now. It’s all about “tradition” and blah blah blah.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
The last few years
I pull for a benches clearing brawl when they play.
They’ve never been my #1 team, but I used to like the Sox, a lot. That has changed. Papelbon, Youklis and Beckett are far more than I can stomach.
Sam Jethroe - September 25, 2010
For me, Youk not so much. Beckett & Papelbon, I’m right with ya.
adc62 - September 25, 2010
Say what you will about Lowe, but he's stepped up big time when the Braves
needed it most unlike our ace.
Erin6 - September 25, 2010
Most definitely.
He’s got a 1.00 ERA the last 4 starts.
Was he cramping again, or was his pitch count up? He was cruising and seemed, at least to me, to be good for another inning or two.
Sam Jethroe - September 25, 2010
Joey Votto HR!!!!
3-3 in the 5th
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
Thanks, Votto.
The Reds are really the team I don’t want to face in the playoffs.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
well, we will have to face them if we win the WC
Kobe:The Legend - September 25, 2010
NOOOOOOO
WE’RE DOOMED, DOOMED I SAY!
On the bright side, our games against the reds this year have been thrilling.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
?
Kobe:The Legend - September 25, 2010
I was joking, overreacting, that kind of thing. We’re not really doomed.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
Not necessarily?
If the winner of the West has a better record than the Reds, wouldn’t the Phils get the Reds?
For me, here’s my preferences:
Giants << Reds < Padres <<<<<< Making the playoffs and figuring it out.
Yakker - September 25, 2010
Yea
But frankly, is there any team you would want to face in the playoffs?
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
I just want us to get there…
HEYJUDE - September 25, 2010
the Pirates
fandave - September 25, 2010
Sweet game
Nice to get back to winning. I hope it continues….
HEYJUDE - September 25, 2010
Lester just lost a no hitter with one out in the 6th. Now I need this game to slow down so it eats into the 7PM newscast I have to do after it is over.
BullManUGA - September 25, 2010
brandon phillips baby
15ks - September 25, 2010
Yeah, yeah... that PAC10 really sucks
What happened Texas?!
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
my friend, a ucla student is at that game haha, they are really stomping them somehow
15ks - September 25, 2010
Texas and Florida are so overrated it’s not even funny
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
yeah but ucla's d has no business shutting down anyone that well
15ks - September 25, 2010
True true. I just hate Texas so I’m enjoying every minute of this.
But come on Brandon Phillips!!!!!
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
ugh
15ks - September 25, 2010
that was outsideeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
15ks - September 25, 2010
balk…
15ks - September 25, 2010
Fuck you Miguel Cairo
pulling a Melky.
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
Florida?
haha ok
Braves24 - September 25, 2010
So in guessing you haven’t watched them this year?
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
I'm a Florida fan
I watch all their games
Braves24 - September 25, 2010
They’ve won but played like complete crap.
BullManUGA - September 25, 2010
not completely but
they have had their struggles here and there like every football team. They will get better as the season goes on
Braves24 - September 25, 2010
well notre damn is done, what a pathetic showing on offense, what a terrible coaching hire
15ks - September 25, 2010
freudian
15ks - September 25, 2010
Great job from Stanford though…
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
not that hard to get 2 or 3 first downs and kick field goals all day
when the defense is exhausted from the offense going 3 and out every time
15ks - September 25, 2010
but like i said i go to sjsu so i hate no one like stanford
we have workout shirts with a spartan raping a tree
15ks - September 25, 2010
I want one…only with a Sun Devil instead of a tree
Scott Coleman - September 25, 2010 via mobile
mark ingram is pretty badass
there were a lot of people saying he’s got great blocking and he does, and that trent richardson is real good, and he is, but ingram starts for a reason
15ks - September 25, 2010
ingram is a beast
Braves24 - September 25, 2010
Nice to finally win another one
It wasn’t the cleanest game for the Braves, especially the one inning that had the two errors after two outs to almost allow the Nats to get back. At this point, I don’t care about style points, it is a W in the record. It would be extremely sweet to give Bobby a finaly road series win tomorrow (for the record, the Braves had dropped the rubber game of the earlier two series this year at Nationals Park…after splitting the first two, both time winning the second game…here is to hope that history does NOT repeat itself again).
LEastCoastBears - September 25, 2010
Tell me Minor isn’t pitching after Beachy. Actually, tell me neither of them are pitching.
TradeAndruw - September 25, 2010
Pads win
We stay .5 back in the WC.
Sam Jethroe - September 25, 2010
DAMN IT
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
we tie if the giants lose right?
15ks - September 25, 2010
No
The Pads and Giants would just switch spots
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
Whoops my bad
rubbles88 is right. we will be in a WC tie if the Giants lose
BravesDawg16 - September 25, 2010
Right.
Because the Giants will be back at second place so the Braves and the Giants will have the same record.
rubbles88 - September 25, 2010
Ah
Hadn’t realized that.
Mannnnnn…I hate rooting for the Rockies, under any circumstances.
Sam Jethroe - September 25, 2010
crap
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
Was at the game today and it was a good time. A couple tense moments there early, but it was good to see Lowe work through some adversity and heat to get the win.
nuftjedi - September 25, 2010 via mobile
Imagine that
Lowe becomes our ace and we win a game that mvhs recaps? These Braves are backwards.
MBL1 - September 25, 2010 via mobile
this curse is over!
Welcome to the WINNAR circle mvhs!
Sir Veza - September 26, 2010
Visiting family and didn't get to see the game.
Always nice to come back to a win.
Cayla - September 25, 2010
dare I say it
phils lost and braves won…..
Braves24 - September 25, 2010
TIED FOR THE WILD CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
15ks - September 25, 2010
Geez, I'm really glad we don't have to face Tulo in the postseason
Assuming we get there, of course. That dude is on FIRE.
SS451 - September 25, 2010
Seriously. Between Tulo and Gonzalez, holy smokes I’d want no piece of that in October.
Yakker - September 26, 2010
Thank you TULO!
Now, let’s PLEASE just win and not have to worry about scoreboard watching
BravesDawg16 - September 26, 2010
Had to root for the Rockies
I feel very, very dirty right now.
Sam Jethroe - September 26, 2010
We all do
But thank God they pulled a Mets and had a skid to put them back a bit (still not far enough)
BravesDawg16 - September 26, 2010
Awesome game
It feels so good to win again. Tied up for the wild card – hopefully we can get ahead tomorrow. One week left!
sag969 - September 26, 2010
one other thing I will say about the game
they looked like a team that wants to be in the playoffs. not sure what it was, but I just saw something in the way they played today’s game that seemed like they finally realized they had to play better to make the playoffs.
nuftjedi - September 26, 2010
ARIZONA
what a game.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2010 via mobile
I'm glad
Michigan put 65 points on the boards still when Denard was injured, fortunately Denard is OK and will play next week, but the 2nd and 3rd string QBs played incredibly.
Kobe:The Legend - September 26, 2010
We played the ugliest game of the season
and somehow beat Cal 10-9.
I didn’t know a college football game could be played in less than 3 hours (which tonight’s was), and I could be so damn bored at a football game.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2010
Happy 2500th Bobby!
Braves win, Kansas State win, and I’m buzzin like a mofo right now.
Time to go wake up the wife for some poonany.
UMDBHIK - September 26, 2010
wake her up?
What are you? Whipped?!
(I kid I kid)
