These weren't the results we were hoping for, but they were the results that many expected. The Phillies altered their rotation so that "H2O" would face the Braves for their three game home set. None of their starters disappointed, with the likely Cy Young winner, Roy Halladay, pitching the worst game between the three.
Game 1 Recap:
Game 2 Recap:
Game 3 Recap:
What We Liked:
Tommy Hanson: In a playoff-like atmosphere, Hanson brought his A-game against a very tough offense. Tommy threw six scoreless innings while allowing just five base runners. The Braves needed this game in order to stay in reach of the division, and Hanson certainly did not disappoint. Unfortunately, neither did Roy Oswalt, who allowed just one hit in seven scoreless innings of his own.
Brandon Beachy: Pitching in his first ever Major League game this late in the season is no easy task. He knew the team needed a solid start from him and he delivered. Although he lasted only 4.1 innings, he allowed just one earned run. He wasn't incredible, but he was far from terrible.
Craig Kimbrel: Kimbrel pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and showed off how great he can be in the back-end of a bullpen. He struckout two batters while allowing two base runners as well, but his performance last night was solid after Peter Moylan was removed.
Freddie Freeman: Freddie had just two plate appearances in the series, but he crushed his first ever Major League home run in his first. He didn't come through against Brad Lidge at the start of last night's ninth inning, but you can't blame him for that. His home run was the first of many to come in a Braves uniform.

What We Didn't Like:
Mike Minor: Minor was awful in his start. He lasted jut 2.1 innings and allowed eight base runners and three runs, which came on a Jayson Werth three-run blast. He was lucky to allow only those runs. Minor is obviously fatigued, which is why Bobby Cox is considering starting Beachy in his place next time through the rotation.
The Offense: The team scored just four runs in the three games. Although they were opposing three great starters, you have to be more productive than that. They won't face many weak starters in the playoffs, so being patient and getting on base will be key the next time they face top-level pitchers. What's worse, they put just two runners on in three innings against the inconsistent Brad Lidge.
Michael Dunn: The Braves had a chance to win game two. They were down just one with Dunn, who had yet to allow an earned run, pitching against the middle of the Phillies lineup. He walked one, allowed two hits, and allowed two runs, which ended up being the difference in the game. He was going to allow runs eventually, it is just unfortunate that it game against this team at this point in the season.
Number of the Series: 0
Zero is, obviously, the amount of games the Braves won. This was a series that they needed and they let each game slip away. In addition to zero being how many games won in the series, it is also the amount of games the Braves are ahead of the Giants in the loss column. They need to come to play in every game from here on out to make the playoffs as Bobby Cox's career comes to a close.

FF’s homer run was a monster blast.

Any rumors as to who the next Braves manager will be? Good rumors please.
SBURROUGHS - September 23, 2010
Freddi Gonzalez is the leading candidate, though the front office has said next to nothing about it. There was word that Freddi was contacted by the Cubs and told them, “thanks but no thanks.”
BullManUGA - September 23, 2010
I think Torre wants the Atlanta job. Too bad we won’t give it to him.
BeatTehMets - September 24, 2010
IMO he would be better than Freddie

Also- I played and coached baseball for 27 years of my life. The highest level being college baseball. One thing that I was lucky to learn early in my coaching career is that when your team is having trouble scoring runs you take some chances. You steal when maybe you wouldn’t normally; you hit and run; you bunt and steal; you send runners when you wouldn’t normally. It not only puts pressure on the defense but it loosens up your team and allows them to have some fun. The Braves are not having much fun right now. Have some fun guys. Play like you are trying to win instead of playing like you are trying not to lose!
SBURROUGHS - September 23, 2010
you know..
.I really like this idea and I agree that it night allow them to have a little fun. However, I really don’t see Bobby doing this, although I really wish he would.

THIS
However, it has seemed like every time we tried to do something like that for the past month it’s gone bad and everyone questioned the decision. Nothing is working, bottom line.
SuperHeyward - September 23, 2010
I kind of agree. In my amateurish eyes, we’re playing a bit tight right now and understandably so give we (in essence) chocked away the NL East. Hopefully, another positive road sweep against the Zimmerman-less (and maybe also Dunn-less) Nats and then some homecooking will set the team right.
LEastCoastBears - September 23, 2010
Yes
And one of those chances should be switching up the lineup a little.
One team this team hasn’t been doing is manufacturing runs. Agree with doing things like bunt and steal a little more often.
Agree with the having fun part. Doesn’t look very fun in that dugout.
ryantex - September 23, 2010
agree.....
I remember when we were in tight games in the past our lead off guy would always bunt….one that made the pitcher have to run and get it….making him get out of his rythem….Bret Butler was the first I saw do it …later Furcal. Of course it would help if they beat out the throw?
We looked like we Braves were not having fun in Philly ….A’TOL
I hate Werth….I wonder how his FA price has jumped up since a couple of weeks ago?
bravestatoo - September 23, 2010
McCann tried to be aggresive on the basepaths, but you didn’t hear many positives responses…
Braves24 - September 23, 2010
I call it a panic move
Mccann was trying to make something happen, but it was due to panic…trying to do too much. Hitting and running, stealing, squeezing, etc are all ways to put pressure on your opponents.
Tagging at 2nd on a sac fly to CF and risking an out while in scoring position in a 3-0 game is a horrible idea. The run scores, 3-1, and still a RISP, we are in business. Instead, Victorino is camped and guns down a potential run, and we are left with a slow runner thrown out by an average arm, no runners on, 2 outs.
Bad move.

on the Bright Side of this series
Phillies used their 3 best pitchers against 2 rookies and 1-2nd year season, and they scored 4 ER – 6R against our SP. 3 runs were against the BP.
and all the 3 games were very competitive.
joshant - September 23, 2010
Agreed
As potent as the Phillies offense is, they only managed 7 earned runs against us all series. Considering that we started two rookies, it’s not too shabby.
Now we did get swept. And we did have an anemic offense. But the total runs scored all series was 9-4. It’s not like we were ever blown out.
I’m hoping we play well enough to get the wild card, and I would love to face the Phillies in the NLCS (not to get too far ahead of myself), where we could trot Hudson, Hanson, and Jurrjens out there.
ryantex - September 23, 2010
fixed it for you...
…I would love to face the Phillies in the NLCS (not to get too far ahead of myself), where we could trot Hudson, Hanson, and Lowe out there.
pjdonald - September 23, 2010
Let's hope this is the beginning of their big swoon
and they lose the rest of their games this season (especially the last 3 against the Bravos.)
adc62 - September 23, 2010
Exactly
I made the exact same point in the thread that got deleted.
But of course, we could NEVER WINZ with our 3 pitchers against their 3 pitchers!!!!!!!!!
/sarcasm
Sir Veza - September 23, 2010
I was so happy for Freddie and his first homer!
As for the series:
Phils beat 2 rookie pitchers (one who didn’t even know he would start until 3pm before the first game) and Nate’s pathetic throwing arm.
They didn’t run away with either game and needed their closer in all 3.
Tommy pitched one heck of a game, in that atmosphere.
I say all things considered, I’m proud of our team for making each game that close and never giving up.
NCChopper - September 23, 2010
and not just the atmosphere. the Phillies are amazingly hot, having won something like 22 out of 26.
I want to see Freddie get some more ABs, Beachy get another chance to pitch (not necessarily another start) and Nate play in CF only.
fandave - September 23, 2010
Beachy needs to start again
The problem is JJ. If he can’t go again, that forces Minor to pitch again while Beachy takes JJ’s spot. However, if JJ goes, than Beachy can spell Minor.
Minor is tired and has a + 9 ERA in September. Let him rest.
Also, Melky belongs in the AL and should never play OF again!!!!
Braves12 - September 23, 2010 via mobile
FTFY
Melky belongs at home and should never play baseball again.
Sir Veza - September 23, 2010
We got this
9 game win streak. Make it happen! Also, congrats to FF.
hawves - September 23, 2010
Been there, done that...
Let’s do it again!
SuperNewb - September 24, 2010
Jose Bautista
Should we trade for him? Wait for him if he gets 1 year dear? He’s probably not going to hit 50 dingerz but he’s a solid 20+HR guy (I’m thinking around 25).
Thoughts?
Sir Veza - September 23, 2010
FREEMAN >>>>>> HALLADAY
That HR was freakin’ epic.
TonyAlmeyda - September 23, 2010
Rockies making what I'm guessing essentially amounts to a last stand against the DBacks...
SuperNewb - September 24, 2010
And they fail...
Rockies 3.5 games back with 9 left…
Looks like the Braves, Padres, and Giants to me
SuperNewb - September 24, 2010
That game was torture.
Good outcome but not very relaxing to watch unfold.
Having said that, Grace and Sutton are pretty damn funny when they get wound up. “C’mon, son.,..throw some strikes.”
Sam Jethroe - September 24, 2010
Win at least 4,...
if not 5 or 6 of the next 6, then we can count teams out. The Rockies and Giants beat on each other this weekend. The Pads host a Reds team trying to clinch. We need to win this weekend to get some breathing room.
