Lidge doesn’t scare me. Our boneheadedness does. First the non-bunt by Minor that could have changed the game and then the horrible baserunning by Mac. We gotta quit making these mistakes if we are going to win anything.
The only reason I don’t go all power trip is because then I’d have to remember to UN-ban them after putting them in timeout. If only SBNation peripheral controls had the ability to Zack Morris time-out or Tony Reali mute whiny users, I’d be the happiest person on earth.
It would be 2015 right now, Teheran, Hanson, Delgado, Medlen, and Vizcaino would be rotating their way to 104 wins while the Phillies are hamstrung with $45M invested in Howard and Halladay alone and in the cellar of the NL East
next few years we’re gonna have a rotation problem. Who will make the rotation? Beachy, Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado….I’m talking about in a few years of course, anything can happen. Good problem to have.
This had the feel of a Braves playoff series: all the tension and the excitement, all the hopelessness, the missed plays, and the knowledge that there’s no tomorrow.
we scored 3 runs vs halladay through 6 and had to go to our bullpen in the 3rd inning because mike minor started. you think hudson is going to go 2 1/3?
Hamels is better. Oswalt in town. Howard and Utley healthy. Brad lidge is back to his old self. Braves minus Medlen and a healthy Jurrjens. a cold martin prado, a dead troy glaus. am i missing something?
They beat us… fair and square… we started a rookie… played them well especially against Halladay.
1. It’s not the end of the world
2. We still lead the WC
3. It doesn’t have much at all to do with their “high school ballpark”
4. Nor does it have anything to do with luck, they just outplayed us.
The Phillies ARE the best team in the NL league… we’ve played them two games starting our rookies against their absolute aces and come up two runs short two games in a row mostly because of stupid mistakes.
Calm down, come back tomorrow and root for the team.
Just doesn’t make it any easier for us to take. A loss is a loss and needless to say we are playing our poorest baseball in terms of months since April (2 games under .500 in September)
and if we want post season success we have to be able to beat the Phillies. This was one of our last games, there are no positives to losing. So yeah, potential end of the world. We should of won.
But likely not going to happen. Momentum is a nice thing to take into the playoffs, and especially against another team that could feasibly be met in the NLCS, they’re going to want to step on our throats and demoralize us going into the postseason.
if nothing else I don’t see Manuel going out of his way to set up the pitching matchups like he did for this series.
also as an aside, if they do clinch (they being the Phillies) I’d prefer they did it before that series too just so they don’t celebrate on our field during a special weekend for Bobby.
The toughest part about these losses is that we really could have won both games but kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Double plays, missed signs, errors, and poor baserunning really killed us and just makes it that much more frustrating
Whats done is done but I can’t help but wonder if we had at least one vet going in this series that could give us more than 3 or 4 innings. Both games have been close despite rookies pitching
If the Braves didn’t hold a 2.5 game lead in the Wild Card coming in, I think Bobby would have shuffled it. But with a 2.5 lead with 12 to go, he was willing to take the risk.
But look at this scenario now: Because the Phillies did this, they now have to run Blanton and Kendrick out their consecutively from now on.
This weekend, the Braves send their top 2 pitchers against the last-place Nats while the Mets get to face the Phillies’ two weakest pitchers.
That was a damn mess. Missed signs, errors, 3 more fucking double plays, bad base running, the inability to get third outs and the inability to cash in on base runners. Honestly though, that was about what I expected. We have too many old players that have worn down to ineffectiveness and too many rookies who don’t have experience. We threw 4 rookie pitchers (Minor, Venters, Dunn, Martinez) and faced Roy Halladay and an already tough Phillies lineup that is fresh due to missed time, and on an incredible roll.
however on the bright side of it. Say the Phillies win the NL East and we win the Wild Card. If we make it to the NLCS we will have completely different games simply because of who’s pitching. This series we are catching the 1st 3 pitchers in their rotation however they are only catching one of our top 3 guys and thats Hanson tomorrow. These games would have been much different had it been Hudson vs. Halladay, Hanson vs. Hamels, and Lowe/Jurrjens vs. Oswalt.
I think all we proved tonight was that we can hit Halladay and yesterday we proved that our pitching can silence their lineup. In a championship game there is no way we see Dunn in there it would have instead been O’Flaherty or something.
All I’m saying is that I still believe we are the better team and we would have won had we matched up with their starters. However, no one seemed to agree with me when i mentioned skipping Minor and pitching Hanson and Hudson on 4 days rest.

Wow, Phillies beat up on 2 rookie pitchers.
Hope we can manage 1 tomorrow night.

And next up against the Phillies = a pitcher who was a rookie last year.

Is there some rule I’m not aware of that states the strike zone grows in the top of the ninth for the home team?
sleezer1788 - September 21, 2010 via mobile
Actually...
the first two games were a lot closer than I thought they would be considering the pitching matchups.
mdhenshaw - September 21, 2010
Close only counts...
In horseshoes and hand grenades.
This had the feel of a Braves playoff series: all the tension and the excitement, all the hopelessness, the missed plays, and the knowledge that there’s no tomorrow.
SS451 - September 21, 2010
This
unfortunately
BravesDawg16 - September 21, 2010
i hate the phillies and their stupid high school ballpark
joshant - September 21, 2010
Ibanez’s double would have been a double in San Diego. Fact is the Bravos couldn’t get a decent shut-down inning when they needed one.
MainLion - September 21, 2010
well if we keep giving runs away with errors, stupid base running, and stupid ass decisions
by the manager we might as well just quit now
depp63 - September 21, 2010
Well good thing you dont need to win the division to make playoffs
Andeezy - September 21, 2010
we made it too easy for them

joshant - September 21, 2010
Sweeping the Nationals or Marlins is an absolute necessity unless we get lots of help.
mdhenshaw - September 21, 2010
we've won this year purely on starting pitching 1-5 and our bullpen
now Jurrjens and Medlen are gone. we can’t field the ball, or get a hit with a runner in scoring position. we have no shot even if we get in
depp63 - September 21, 2010
i don't get the stupidity on here
we lose 2 games by 2 runs starting rookies with a total of 7 games in the majors and apparently we have no shot against anyone anymore
lingsched - September 21, 2010
lol
You’ve been a TC member how long?
royhobbs - September 21, 2010
we have no shot vs the team we have to go thru to get to the world series
if you want to be a glass half full gut fine. I see reality
depp63 - September 21, 2010
ok moron
we scored 3 runs vs halladay through 6 and had to go to our bullpen in the 3rd inning because mike minor started. you think hudson is going to go 2 1/3?
lingsched - September 21, 2010
I'm sorry...
You do mean the team we’re 7-7 against this season, right?
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
not the same team we beat back in july
Hamels is better. Oswalt in town. Howard and Utley healthy. Brad lidge is back to his old self. Braves minus Medlen and a healthy Jurrjens. a cold martin prado, a dead troy glaus. am i missing something?
depp63 - September 21, 2010
The knowledge of how quickly things can change in a baseball season?
Or the playoffs?
Or that we just lost two close games while starting rookies against aces?
Hmmm… Yeah I’d say you’re missing a couple of things.
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
You're all being ridiculous...
Go Braves
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
Yes, I mean the National League League
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
I agree
Just doesn’t make it any easier for us to take. A loss is a loss and needless to say we are playing our poorest baseball in terms of months since April (2 games under .500 in September)
BravesDawg16 - September 21, 2010
Exactly
This guys are too good for mistakes. Got to play perfect ball
crsosa - September 21, 2010
That was actually pretty fucking awful
and if we want post season success we have to be able to beat the Phillies. This was one of our last games, there are no positives to losing. So yeah, potential end of the world. We should of won.
Bob Mackie - September 21, 2010
There may be no actual positives to losing..
But it’s not hard at all to find positives in the loss…
If we start Hudson and he pitches well we could very easily have won that game…
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
GRRRR
Braves win this if Bobby brings in Moylan to face Werth instead of letting Dunn pitch to him.
Frustrating loss, but I’m starting to become numb to them, especially after last year.
TonyAlmeyda - September 21, 2010
I agree about moylan
Bob Mackie - September 21, 2010
Tied in the loss column...
with the Padres right now.
mdhenshaw - September 21, 2010
Phillies might mail it in the last series of the year and we can go up against their scrubs.
BeatTehMets - September 21, 2010
That would be nice
But likely not going to happen. Momentum is a nice thing to take into the playoffs, and especially against another team that could feasibly be met in the NLCS, they’re going to want to step on our throats and demoralize us going into the postseason.
royhobbs - September 21, 2010
I’m sure that they will rest their starters in that situation rather than risk injury.
BeatTehMets - September 21, 2010
was thinking the same thing
if nothing else I don’t see Manuel going out of his way to set up the pitching matchups like he did for this series.
also as an aside, if they do clinch (they being the Phillies) I’d prefer they did it before that series too just so they don’t celebrate on our field during a special weekend for Bobby.
nuftjedi - September 21, 2010
Yay Freeman!!!

BeatTehMets - September 21, 2010

Scott Coleman - September 21, 2010
So do we root for the giants to pull away now?
And just root for the Dodgers and Diamondbacks?
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
I say root for them to pull away
BravesDawg16 - September 21, 2010
Two tough losses
The toughest part about these losses is that we really could have won both games but kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Double plays, missed signs, errors, and poor baserunning really killed us and just makes it that much more frustrating
BravesDawg16 - September 21, 2010
100% agree.
there is losing and there is handing games away.
the Braves have handed the last two away.
nuftjedi - September 21, 2010
Thrashers lost.
BeatTehMets - September 21, 2010

SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
At some point somebody is going to ask
Why we didn’t switch the rotation to have our top starters against Philly… right?
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
Yea it was a bit strange
Whats done is done but I can’t help but wonder if we had at least one vet going in this series that could give us more than 3 or 4 innings. Both games have been close despite rookies pitching
BravesDawg16 - September 21, 2010
Yeah
It should of been done that way
Bob Mackie - September 21, 2010
Maybe if we weren't leading the Wild Card.
AnEternalEnigma - September 21, 2010
just had to put my dog of 14 years down
come back to see this shit.
chipsicyhotcorner - September 21, 2010
My condolences

Hope the team can lift your spirits tomorrow!
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
thanks guys.
i know i dont speak up here much, but i do appreciate it.
it does hurt.
they better! if the WC somehow eludes us, i will officially blame it on me.
chipsicyhotcorner - September 21, 2010
So sorry. :(
tomahawklove - September 21, 2010
Dang nationals....
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
Cheer for the Padres and Cubs.
If the Padres beat the Dodgers and the Cubs beat the Giants, the Padres move back 0.5 ahead of the Giants in the NL West.
More importantly, the Giants will be 2.5 behind the Braves in the Wild Card with 10 left to go.
If that scenario plays out, the Braves will actually gain a half-game despite losing.
AnEternalEnigma - September 21, 2010
i don't think that's right...
lingsched - September 21, 2010
Yeah you're right.
ESPN hadn’t updated their numbers when I last looked.
Hell, they still list the Phillies as having only 1 more home game this year and 9 more road games.
AnEternalEnigma - September 21, 2010
so go dodgers, cubs, and dbacks
heh
lingsched - September 21, 2010
right now
SF is 1 game back of us. if they lose, they will be 1.5 back. if the padres win, they will be 1 back.
lingsched - September 21, 2010
AJC:
“Minor missed a sign, was supposed to bunt. Said he just forgot the bunt sign was down first pitch and that meant it stayed on.”
“McCann went on his own trying to advance to third. Just thought he could make it, Cox said. We couldn’t ask McCann; he left before we got in”
SuperNewb - September 21, 2010
Despite those, the Braves did good to stay close up until the sixth.
I would’ve preferred Freeman’s first HR to be in a win.
TonyAlmeyda - September 21, 2010
LOL
McCann got the hell out of there without facing the media, eh? I would too after such a sloppy game. Passed ball on a non-swinging strike = bad night.
AnEternalEnigma - September 21, 2010
Oh boy
That was a damn mess. Missed signs, errors, 3 more fucking double plays, bad base running, the inability to get third outs and the inability to cash in on base runners. Honestly though, that was about what I expected. We have too many old players that have worn down to ineffectiveness and too many rookies who don’t have experience. We threw 4 rookie pitchers (Minor, Venters, Dunn, Martinez) and faced Roy Halladay and an already tough Phillies lineup that is fresh due to missed time, and on an incredible roll.
Bob Mackie - September 21, 2010
crap
padres up 2-0
lingsched - September 21, 2010
Yea this is dissappointing to me to
however on the bright side of it.
However, no one seemed to agree with me when i mentioned skipping Minor and pitching Hanson and Hudson on 4 days rest.
drumzalicious - September 21, 2010
This
SuperNewb - September 22, 2010
Oh Dodgers…
tomahawklove - September 21, 2010
Seriously? STILL believe they're the better team?
I mean, why even play the games. The Braves are the best AMIRITE?
Dr. Teeth - September 22, 2010
when they get swept tomorrow are they still the better team?
Or is three in a row enough to convince the delusional ones
