Braves Ride Wright's Error To 6-Run 4th In 6-4 Win Over Mets

I don't think Big Red is used to this whole "hitting celebration" thing. He seems a bit awkward here.

I don't think Big Red is used to this whole "hitting celebration" thing. He seems a bit awkward here.

Ah. There's nothing like a 6-run inning against the Mets to make all seem right with the world. That, and the Padres getting blown out (the Phillies won again, of course; thanks for nothing, Jason Marquis). Down 3-0 after yet another Tommy Hanson-patented SID (Second-Inning Disaster), the Braves rallied back in the 4th.

The inning got started with a solid single up the middle by Derrek Lee. After Brian McCann struck out, Matt Diaz hit a high bouncer to David Wright at third base. Wright fielded the ball a bit awkwardly and then made a low throw to second base that Ruben Tejada couldn't field. The error gave the Braves an extra baserunner and an extra out, both of which would come back to haunt the Mets and their starter, Jon Niese.

After Alex Gonzalez fouled out (with what would have been the third out of the inning), the Braves went on a run of great at-bats and Niese fell apart. Melky Cabrera blooped a single to center to score the first run. Light-hitting Tommy Hanson followed up by somehow coaxing a walk to load the bases. Then, Omar Infante poked a ball just past Wright down the third base line for a 2-run double that tied the game at 3.

That brought up the Rookie of the Year (yeah, I'm calling it)--Jason Heyward. J-Hey ripped a 2-strike pitch from Niese off the "5 dollar footlong" sign on the edge of the second deck in right for a 3-run homer that would give the Braves all the runs they needed. That the homer was off Niese, a left-hander, made it all the more impressive. The kid is good, folks.

In addition to working that key walk, Hanson gutted his way through six innings. He gave up a solo homer to Lucas Duda in the fourth (which capped the scoring), but most of the damage was in his bugaboo inning, the second. And just like with Niese's bad inning, Hanson's inability to get his counterpart out played a big role in the scoring. After Duda singled in a run to make it 1-0, Hanson had a chance to get out of the inning down just the 1 run. All he had to do was get Niese out. Instead, he left a pitch out over the plate, and Niese got just enough of it to get it over Alex Gonzalez's head for a single. Jose Reyes followed with another RBI hit to make it 3-0.

In the midst of that inning, Braves manager Bobby Cox was tossed by his nemesis, Bill Hohn, who was working home plate tonight. The ejection seemed pretty out-of-the-blue to me, but what else is to be expected from Hohn? Tommy Hanson seemed a bit unsettled by all the huffing and puffing (possibly contributing to his poor inning), but in the end, the Braves came back and won the game after Bobby was gone. One of these days, we're going to see our last Braves comeback after a Bobby Cox ejection (and our last Bobby Cox ejection, for that matter). For some reason, I hope that day was not today.

One sour note was that Takashi Saito left the game in the 8th with some sort of injury; we'll have to wait and see exactly what is wrong, and how bad it is. Let's cross our fingers. The bullpen did some great work, though--Saito, Jonny Venters, Peter Moylan, and Billy Wagner combined to give up just 1 baserunner in 3 innings of work, striking out 4.

All in all, it was a good start to a crucial road trip. Now let's keep it going tomorrow with our ace (Tim Hudson) against their newbie (Dillon Gee).

Star-divide

MVP
Heyward -- 2/5, HR, R, 3 RBI, 0.291 WPA

Honorable Mention
Hanson's clean-shaven cheeks -- He looked good (though not at all like a lumberjack).
Infante -- 1/4, BB, 2B, R, 2 RBI, K, 0.184 RBI
The 'Pen -- 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.251 WPA

LVP
Wright -- 0/4, -0.081 WPA hitting, plus the critical error in the 4th inning that led to all 6 Braves runs

Clutch Play
Heyward's homer (0.290 WPA)

Do it again tomorrow.

Not the fall behind part though, just the win part.

I wouldn't mind

If there’s a repeat of the Heyward blast to right. That was hit as hard as anything he’s launched this year.

it was a MoonShit

but he has hit several that hard...

which is encouraging. The next 5-20 years of him is gonna be a sight to see.

Heart pounding indeed

ekg is still showing a pulse

There you go.

But “Heart pounding” works, too.

I am trying

to will them to the playoffs. My heart stops each time I get the mobile update from ESPN. I have my playoff ticket in hand and ready to make the 8+ hour drive to Turner from Ohio!

You know what

Braves have the second best record in the NL

Hence

the reason they are in 1st place for the wild card…

I miss

Tommy Hanson’s beard… it gave me inspiration to grow my own! I want to be a lumberjack too!!

He shaved off his beard so Billy Wags would stop blowing saves in his games. See, Wagner was jealous of that super duper lumberjack beard and decided to cast revenge by blowing the saves. Hanson finally realized this and shed the beard, thus allowing him to win this game.

And I stand by this theory 100%.

Beards are bad for this team...

see Hanson and Hudson.

Too bad, because beards are awesome.

You're a lumberjack....

….and you’re okay….

~

Really? Not Jimenez or Wainwright? I wouldn’t put money on that if I were you.

What the heck are you talking about? I put my money on Psylocke.

So, you WEREN’T attempting to say Wags is a “Cy Lock”?

I mean, he should be. Resistance is futile against Wags.

the offense still concerns me a bit

we were only able to score in one inning…we need to be more consistent

we just got lucky it was a huge inning
Wasn't a great start

but we took advantage of the error and got some big two-out hits. And man is it fun watching Heyward play.

Also, on an unrelated note, I love the blue jerseys. One of these days I’ll have to splurge and buy one.

I called it

I said Bobby had to get tossed in this game to motivate the team, he did, and we won.

another Chipper Jones Momentum Theory success story

If you wanna read something really funny

head over to AA’s game thread and read the childish whining about some of our game thread comments.

For the most part, though...

I find AA to be very entertaining and intelligent.

Yeah

It’s weird to find their comments having such a childish focus. I guess having the kind of year they’ve had is taxing them pretty hard.

everyone has an off night I guess. although I did find the squirrel/Nazi photoshop quite entertaining.

Umm

For the folks over there, I don’t like Grey’s Anatomy. Sorry MookietheCat, looks like you’re out a million bucks.

They sure were bellyaching over our comments in the game thread.

Funny because partially true

They were laughing about our comments. Can you blame them?

I sure can't....

Some are pretty ridiculous.

so what?!

the comment here were pretty rediculous I can’t blame them…I love how some people here gave up after the 2nd

Braves' record when mvhsbball doesn't watch:

1-0

You are no longer...

allowed to watch a game for the remainder of the season. After we win the World Series we’ll tell you all about it.

so, WTF, have you just completely quit on us?

I had to work.....

that’s why I haven’t been around as much. crazy busy.

More, I want more

Did the little pig go wee wee wee all the way home?

Caution side effects include...

Mud Butt!

Good win tonight. We finally got a hit when we needed it. In fact, we got two hits when we needed them.

Nice sig!

Some lazy journalist said it.

Lazy Journalist = cbwilk

Immature Journalist = mvhsbball

Missed the game

Liked the box score. But how’d we look? Closer to our former selves?

Decent. Got lucky on a nerror—Heyward had a huge blast, so he’s looking good. Melky actually got an RBI too.

Hope we get a good scouting report from Gwinnett...

I hate playing young pitchers.

But Gee isn’t that good, and Gwinnett had some success against him. Freeman struggled, but Diory had two good games against him, I wouldn’t mind seeing him start.
Gee vs. Gwinnett this year…

Current Braves vs. Gee:
Freeman 0-4, K, RBI sac fly
Diory 4-5, (all singles), RBI, one caught stealing
Jair 1-2, single and scored on Freeman’s sac fly
McLouth 0-3

absent serious injury and with the obvious exception of Ross subbing in for McCann, Bobby is going to be running his core starters out there every single game until we clinch the playoffs.

Just saying is all...

Diory is 4-5 against the guy this year. Considering our general never hit a guy 2 starts into his career, I think it’s worth letting him get a day.
Considering he’s a righty, how about…
2B-Infante
RF-Heyward
3B-Prado
C-McCann
1B-Lee or Glaus
CF-McLouth
SS-Hernandez
LF-Melky

Pinch hitters—Hinske, Diaz, Freeman, Gonzalez, Lee/Glaus, Ross

ok, except Bobby aint’ gonna do that. just sayin’.

Check out last night’s game thread. When we went down 3-0, half of the people started crying like little babies and saying how fed up they were with the team etc etc. It’s actually pretty humorous to read it.

We have the 2nd best record in the NL. It’s fine to bitch and moan a little, but for all of you people who have no faith in this team suck, and I want all of you to go away. I will stick it out for the rest of the season with the fans who actually stand by the team (you know who you are). God, I’m so sick and tired of the whiney Atlanta fan. There was actually a debate started about how we should have won more WS in the 90s. No wonder the Mets fans were mocking some of our comments; I don’t blame them.

I’m not saying we don’t have problems, but it would never make me abandon the team. My guess is that the majority of you weren’t around during the 80s. I was, and you complainers don’t know how good you have it.

I agree absofrickinlutely and wish to add that as pointed out by CaptainLou02 in the FanPost “It might stink right now but….”, our boys may be about to go on a hot streak and steamroll into the playoffs for all any of us know. As Yogi or someone else (Churchill or maybe Shakespear) once said: That’s why they play the games.

reply fail..

Is that your cat? Looks exactly like my gf’s cat. Exactly.

Wait…are you my gf? If so, where do you want to watch the game?

Loved Biff

Threw by buddy a ball in the outfield seats in (I think) 79. Best name. Ever.

Saw and raised your Rec’d.

5! 5 dollah! 5 dollah 418-feet long!

Ugh, the dreaded SID. It was good to see Tommy settle down after that and pitch well.

Like someone said above, I too would love to see our team start scoring in more than one inning. It was enough to get this win, but it sure would be easier on my stress levels if we start getting runs throughout the game.

Check 2 today please ;-)
