Braves vs. Nationals - Series Preview

Fun fact: This is the 4th time I've covered a Braves/Nationals series for TC this year. Wow.

Okay, so you know the Nationals. Besides a player or two, they haven't changed much at all since we last saw them. Rob Dibble was fired, which was awesome. Nyjer Morgan will fight you, and you don't wanna mess with all 5'8, 150lbs of him. Besides that, not too much sticks out. Here's a look at the offense.

Runs: 595 (12th)
BA: .256 (10th)
OBP: .322 (11th)
SLG: .395 (11th)
HR: 130 (10th)
SB:
103 (3rd)
BB/K: 0.42 (11th)

As you can see, they're still a below average bunch, and they're still without Josh Willingham. Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman still form one of the better 3-4 punches in baseball, but they don't have much help. 2nd baseman Danny Espinosa has been great for them since being called up (1.079OPS), but keep in mind that it's a definitely a small sample size. Ivan Rodriguez does a majority of the catching, but rookie Wilson Ramos, who was acquired for Matt Capps at the trade deadline, has been playing a little more often over the last few weeks. Outfielders Roger Bernadina (.724OPS) and Nyjer Morgan (.634OPS) don't bring much to the lineup besides speed, and Michael Morse is having a solid season in limited playing time. Braves Killer Ian Desmond is also having a pretty good first season in the Major Leagues, but his defense is spotty at best.

Pitching Probables:

Monday, 7:10 -

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Yuneski Maya 0-1 1 1 0 0 0 0 5.0 5 4 4 1 2 3 7.20 1.40
W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Derek Lowe 12-12 30 29 0 0 0 0 169.0 182 85 83 17 58 109 4.42 1.42

Yuneski Maya, as you can see, is a 29-year old right handed starting pitcher who is out of Cuba. He made his Major League debut against the Mets last week, and was hit hard early and often. There's really not much on Maya anywhere. All I know is he had an ERA of 3.38 in 18 innings with the Nats triple-A affilate in Syracuse, and he isn't an overpowering pitcher by any means.

Derek Lowe, after missing a start, returned to Atlanta and looked pretty good against a very weak Pirates lineup. He ended up going 6 innings, and despite allowing 8 hits, Lowe only allowed 1 run. Lowe didn't walk anybody, but again, it was against the Pirates.

Tuesday, 7:10 -

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Livan Hernandez 9-11 31 29 2 1 0 0 186.0 190 82 79 13 59 99 3.82 1.34
W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Jair Jurrjens 7-5 19 19 0 0 0 0 111.1 111 59 56 11 41 83 4.53 1.37

This will be the 19th time Livan Hernandez has faced the Braves in 2010, and you know what he's going to do. The veteran, right handed starting pitcher throws a steady diet of junk balls and doesn't really throw harder than 90mph. Livan pitched well in his last start against the Mets and only allowed 2 earned runs in 7 innings, but the Nats didn't score for him and he took the 3-2 loss.

Ugh. I'd settle for some consistency from Jair for once. Jurrjens was rocked in his last start against the Cardinals, even though he was staked to a nice 3-0 lead against Chris Carpenter. As JJ put it in his post-game interview, "I felt like I was throwing BP out there." and it's the truth. He couldn't locate his pitches, and the Cardinals weren't missing. Fortunately for Jurrjens, he faces one of the weaker lineups in the NL and should have a much easier time.

Wednesday, 12:10 -

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - John Lannan 7-7 22 22 0 0 0 0 124.2 154 73 65 12 44 59 4.69 1.58
W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Mike Minor 3-0 6 6 0 0 0 0 32.0 40 21 20 4 8 35 5.63 1.50

John Lannan, a soft-tossing lefty (oh boy.), will be making the start for the Nationals on this Business Man's special in Atlanta. As you can see, Lannan hasn't been very good this season, and he doesn't overpower you either. He did pitch pretty well against the Marlins in his last start and allowed two runs in six innings, but took the 3-1 loss.

Mike Minor hasn't pitched well dominating the Cubs with 12 strikeouts, but the Braves always seem to score for him. Despite a record of 3-0 and an impressive K/BB ratio of nearly 4.5/1, Minor has struggled with consistency and has been bailed out multiple times by our jekyll-and-hyde offense. Mike had to fight through 5 innings against the Cardinals in his last start, and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings.

The Nationals Bullpen:

The Nats finally have a solid bullpen, and it's led by a young bunch of hard-throwing relievers. Closer Drew Storren has filthy stuff, but can be wild at times. Set-up man Tyler Clippard has been great for Washington in 2010. Middle relievers Joel Peralta, Sean Burnett, Doug Slaten and Tyler Walker have all been solid for the Nats, and journeyman reliever Miguel Batista has been pretty good when he pitches long-relief. All-in-all, a solid bunch.

To be honest, this is a series the Braves should sweep. That being said, I'll go in being pessimistic and say we'll win 2 out of 3. I just don't trust us against soft-tossing or left-handed pitchers at this point.

Want: Sweep
Happy: 2 out of 3
Pissed: Anything less

I'll agree with that

with the qualification that if the Phillies sweep, the Braves better have had to as well.

Is it weird I wish we were facing Stras?

We always hit so much better against Aces. Anyway, I’m sticking to 2 of 3 until the Braves show they can hit crap pitching.

Correction on the content above: JJ pitched against Wainwright, not Carpenter.

And Go Braves!

Facing 3 mediocre pitchers and one of them a rookie – consider me uneasy.

if the other team pitcher isn´t a CY candidate

our winning chance drops a lot.

and if their pitcher has a 5+ ERA. it drops even more

This will be the 19th time Livan Hernandez has faced the Braves in 2010.

i´m not a dominant English speaker, but i think there´s something wrong with this sentence.

even though he was staked to a nice 3-0 lead against Chris Carpenter

Cris Carpenter Adam Wainwright

the first one was a hyperbole, an exaggeration if you will
Outside of pitching....

the series will depend on McLouth, Lee, and McCann. If all these guys can produce for us, the series should be ours 3-0. If two of the three do anything, I say Braves 2-1 for the series. If they all have bad series, uphill battle pitchers duel (hopefully 2-1 still). Man September is so stressful.

I'm optmistic about this series

especially when comparing to one of last year’s end of the year series against the Nats (not the one at the very end when the Braves were officially eliminated and then got swept in 4 games at home to the Nats to close out the year) when the Braves swept 3 games in DC to keep their faint playoffs hope alive. If the Braves come with enough intensity, there is no way that the Nats can match that (talent-wise or desire-wise).

I belive the Braves will get it done in this series.

Why did so many people vote SWEEP!!!!!????

Don’t you guys understand the reverse jinks? Vote get swept and you will understand it….. Or look at the Pirates series where we all thought we would sweep.

My prediction

Bench clearing fight in the bottom of the 4th because of Morgan robbed Mclouth HR.

Mclouth will run to Morgan from 1st after he seeing Morgan made a leaping catch to rob his HR.
After this, all the braves bench will run to the CF to prevent a fight, but it´s too late (Mclouth is fast). Mike Morse will try to stop Mclouth but he will fail. Then all the defensive and bench player of the Nats will run to CF and this is when the fight will begin,.

Haha

I love how you speak. Is English your native language? Not trying to place offense anywhere, just reminds me of this beautiful Swedish chick that I had the pleasure of knowing for a year while she was living in my house as an exchange student.

....and even though I still fantasize about her......

…..that doesn’t mean you get the same treatment.

And don't dare badmouth her either
i dont want the same treatment. LOL
Spanish is the language of my country (main language)

Chinese is the language i learned from my parents. (i know to speak but not write and read)
English is the language i learned in the school, videogames, internet, etc, but im pretty awful.

i want to learn English in a English speaker country because if i study English here, i speak Spanish everywhere.

English is boring

I wouldn’t really bother with it.

Almost all of the jobs oportunities in my country require full English speaker

i was applying for some company but im not full English speaker

Well....

….if it means anything it seems to be pretty good when compared to a lot of other people’s english when it isn’t their native language. Hell, it’s better than a lot people’s english that were born in the southeast US…..

SouthEast US has a lot of Latin american

if i choose a place to study English, the Southeast USA would be the last place i choose. Too many latin american. Same as San Diego and Los Angeles

Well, I'm from Coventry in the UK....

….and came to the southeast and absolutely hate it. So, wise choice.

Not again!

If Nate Mclouth has another homerun/extra base hit robbed from him, he should throw something at the outfielder or try to figure out why the baseball gods hate him so much. For a guy that has had an awful year, it has to be frustrating to scorch the ball and get robbed. He has always been a streaky hitter and he looks locked in over the last ten days. Here’s hoping he continues the rest of the way. Not only would it be great for this year, but it would help clear things up for next year.

I learned nothing from this preview.

Well whoopdidoo for you?

McLouth
Prado
Heyward
McCann
Lee
Infante
Gonzalez
Hinske

I want to see this before the season is finished. I know you’re reading this Bobby…….you insecure, but lovable prick, you.

He works well in the lower half, a RLRLR

Infante
Heyward
Prado
McCann
Lee/Glaus
McLouth
Gonzalez
LF

i prefer a LH for a 2nd spot because of the pontetial gap between 1st and 2nd base

if the 1st hitter get on base

Shoot… bat Lee 7th and move Agonz to 5th and McLouth to 6th….. shake it up after the 1st 4!!!!

I'd just be happy if Infante is moved to the bottom half....

….because this team desperately needs some consistency there. A singles hitter near the bottom could do wonders for their RISP problem. Plus, Infante kills with RISP and batting leadoff doesn’t get him many opportunities to cash in on that.

Better yet, put the Raw Dog in at 2nd or 3B, move Infante to LF and give us some excitement.

I like Conrad, I really do...

…but I feel that if he were given consistent playing time that he wouldn’t provide much. The reason he’s been so important is because he was coming off the bench and delivering. Those seem to be remembered more because of how unexpected it actually is.

But I don’t like him as a full-time player at all, low AVG and all….

They didn't demote you yet?...

I guess we know for sure than gondee isn’t Bobby Cox. Cox doesn’t keep calling on losers like you mvhs, or should I say, tck (talking chop kawakami).

Braves control their fate tonight in the Wild Card.

Tonight is not a full schedule, and the Giants are one of the teams not playing tonight. With the NL Wild Card second place being a tie between the top NL West teams, the Braves will gain at least 0.5 of a game with a win tonight. If the Braves win and the Padres beat the Rockies, the Braves will take a 1.5 game lead of the Giants and knock the Rockies back down to 3.5 games. If the Braves win and the Rockies beat the Padres, the Braves will take a 2 game lead over the Padres and stay 2.5 ahead of the Rockies.

Forget what the Phillies do. With 17 left after tonight, a win tonight increases the playoff odds dramatically because you’re guaranteed to gain ground tonight on someone if you just win.

I voted "Get Swept"...

cause I’m trying to do that royhobbs thing….

I tried that and got called "Negative"

I’m considering recommending A Modest Proposal to that person, just to see what happens.

Poll doesn't include option for Meteor....
Lineups for tonight....

Infante
Heyward
Prado
McCann
Lee
McLouth
Gonzo
Diaz

Espinosa
Desmond
Bernadina
Zimmerman
Dunn
Morse
Morgan
Ramos

Odd lineup for the Nats….
