All Alex Gonzalez needed to do was hit a fly ball, and he surely did that. He got all of a Mitchell Boggs pitch and won the game with a three run shot after Rick Ankiel walked and Eric Hinske singled. It was just another dramatic last at-bat victory for the Braves, who are now tied for first place once again.
Tommy Hanson pitched well as the starter, going seven innings and allowing just two earned runs on an Albert Pujols double. Jonny Venters got credited with a blown save after allowing the tying run to score, but most of that was Martin Prado's fault for making a throwing error earlier in the inning.
The rest of the Braves bullpen was virtually flawless. Peter Moylan, Billy Wagner, Takashi Saito, Kyle Farnsworth, and Craig Kimbrel combined for 4.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed in total. Kimbrel earned the win with a scoreless inning which featured two strikeouts.
The Braves opened up the scoring in the first inning with a bases loaded walk by Nate McLouth. McLouth added an RBI triple later in the game and seems to be back on track, which is an absolutely great sign. Jason Heyward homered in the bottom of the seventh and made a few solid defensive plays as well as he continues to make his push for N.L. Rookie of the Year.
Tomorrow the Braves can win the series with Tim Hudson on the mound against Kyle Lohse. Lohse has had a rough season to say the least and Hudson has certainly not. This pitching matchup definitely favors the Braves, so hopefully they can finish off the Cards tomorrow afternoon.

Alex needs to hit more walkoff HRs
because he’s damn good at celebrating
GoBravesNY - September 11, 2010
The crossing of arms to basically say “Game Over!” was classic. That moment was beyond awesome.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
i liked the skip more just before home. He was basically saying screw this, I’m having fun on my way around
GoBravesNY - September 11, 2010
That was my favorite too.
Especially since he was skipping like he knew he was hot stuff right then. A+.
Sarahbeth - September 12, 2010
Medlen
looks like the little brother of the team
Especially during that celebration

My favorite part
Is that a dad holding a kid still jumps up and tries to grab the HR.
royhobbs - September 12, 2010
Damn.
Wish I had been there. And I thought last night was electric. This was downright freaking magical.
And Gonzo was showing some serious swagger there. Makes me think we need to start playing “Swagger Like Us” by T.I. for some things.

deewill23 - September 11, 2010
I'm sensing
the start of something great with Kimbrel. Dude can light the opposition up.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
Dunn, Venters, and Kimbrel
That’s a relief core I can get behind.
king of games - September 11, 2010
Throw in
Teheran, Delgado, Vizcaino, Heyward, Hanson, Jurrjens, Medlen, Prado, and McCann.
2012 is going to be a great year for this team.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
it’s kinda sad to think that we have to skip 2011 to have the “ultimate team” due to the veterans (Lowe, KK, McLouth) are holding us back from the future.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
KK will be traded this winter.
king of games - September 11, 2010
no
that will be Lowe
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
Not unless we eat 80-90% of the contract, KK has a decent contract and did pich well in 2009.
king of games - September 11, 2010
I rather eat 10-15M of Lowe’s contract. We have more money to spend and so we could get Crawford. And if we ate 80% of his contract, we would be paying 24M out of his 30M contract, not going to happen
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
Would much rather have Lowe than KK...
KK needs a change of scenery badly
UpstateNyBravesFan - September 12, 2010
At the end of the 2008 season (72-90), I said that this team’s time was only going to come in 2011 or later. Anything before then is just icing on the cake, if you ask me. As good as this team is now (and it is an amazing team), 2011 and 2012+ are going to even better.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
Nate has been doing much better of late tho maybe he has figured things out.
UpstateNyBravesFan - September 12, 2010
Freeman, maybe Beachy, and will Salcedo be ready by then?
MBL1 - September 11, 2010 via mobile
Beachy should defenitely be up next year. If Salcedo is ready by then that is great, but I’m not sure about that one.
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
Don't forget
Brandon Beachy and Mycal Jones should be ready by 2012 too!
deewill23 - September 11, 2010
This
His outing was down right unfair to the Cardinals. Their faces were like, “who the hell is this guy!?” Mr. 99 mph better known as Kimbrel. Now go back to your dugout in disgrace.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
99 plus a wicked slider
and his command looked great.
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
that slider came out of nowhere. The announcers were giddy about that pitch. I was like “holy shit!” Nasty.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
he always had a nasty slider
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
That's the best command I've seen him have.
His stuff has always been top notch. I think a summer of closing in the IL may have taught him what he needs to know to transfer that up to the bigs.
Sam Jethroe - September 11, 2010
this
his command was amazing and he was painting the corners. We knew had elite stuff, but his command was what was holding him back. It is a SSS, but I think he will build off this and get better
Braves24 - September 11, 2010
I love
the way Heap just set up down the middle and let him reach back and throw it and let the natural movement do its thing instead of trying to make him pinpoint
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
That's the best I've ever seen CK look.
That breaker to end the inning was beyond hilarious. I half expected LaRussa to come out and claim it was illegal because it was unfair.
Sam Jethroe - September 11, 2010
Well,
that would be something that Tony LaRussa would do…
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
Yes, it would.
I loved that quote about how he liked that Cox didn’t try dirty tricks. All I could think of was “You mean like telling the ump to strictly enforce the meaningless catcher’s box?”
Sam Jethroe - September 11, 2010
great win
Gonzo’s bat flip says it all and was epic
Braves24 - September 11, 2010

Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
D-Lee
is starting to fill me with the same dread McLouth used to
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
Really?
He’s OPSed 1.116 over the last 7 days.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
True
Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have him out there for the glove than Glaus and consistent stroke. Perhaps ‘tense’ is a better word than ‘dread.’ Would love to see his power stoke keep it up.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
Yup,
I can get behind ‘tense’. I don’t trust him too much in big situations either. The difference is that he’s been giving me hope over his last few games. Same with McLouth. If these two heat up, and we maintain consistent production from the rest of our players, watch out in October.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
This.
I’d love to see them both heat up, and if Freeman would get some more at bats I’d be happy as he is silky smooth in the field, but if Lee gets going you just can’t take him out. No complaints at this point. We’re winning, however Big Red may end up sacrificing something for a W soon
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
I say
that he sacrifices Lowe. The problem with Freeman is that, although he has an extremely bright future ahead of him, he does not have above-average MLB power or above-average MLB plate discipline. The one thing that he does well (on offense, right now) is make consistent contact with the ball. He isn’t doing that right now. I don’t think that he’s going to help the team that much down the stretch…
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
Agreed.
Lowe would be worthy. That ‘sinker’ is a physics experiment gone wrong. You’re right about all of that. I’d be interested if more appearances would help him out, but if Lee hits well then keep him for a bat and late inning glove as seen today.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
hasn’t Freddie had like 7 at bats?
I don’t think he’s going to be our savior, but I do think he’ll get a couple of big hits.
MBL1 - September 11, 2010 via mobile
yep
he’s had a few, hit the ball well a few times, has a hit or two. He will be fine and if they had a 10+ game lead in the division I could see him making consistent starts, but things are too tense. As long as he’s not Kotchman Jr. I’ll sleep well.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
This
10 AB, but this is not the time to let him experience his growing pains.
frozendesert - September 11, 2010
He's only 20
It’s not like we’re trying to get him ready for a make or break season next year. Plenty of time for him to learn, especially with his size and tools.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
Agreed.

Gonzalez stats with Atlanta:
.267/.327/.414/.741 with 4 HRs and 27 RBIs coming into today.
Today, he went 1 for 6, but added a HR and 3 RBIs.
So that’s 5 HRs and 30 RBIs in 53 games now. Extrapolating that to a full season in Atlanta, he’d be around 15 HRs with around 90 RBIs (yeah, yeah, I know – RBIs are a poor performance indicator). Since leaving Toronto, his slugging is down, but his OBP is up. He’s been a decent pick-up. I can see him staying in Atlanta for next season.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 11, 2010
he will be with Atlanta next year
he has a cheap option
Braves24 - September 11, 2010

It’s just that when we traded for him (and even recently), a lot of people around here have been bitching about how he’s not good enough to play the rest of this season, rather less all of next season, too.

Baseball is a crazy sport...
We lose Pirates series and lose the first game of the Cards and out of nowhere the Braves are “fading” and “are going to be the team left out of playoffs” (thank you ESPN experts). Now the same Braves win two in a row and now we have the best record in the NL (screw tie. We are winning the overall series vs. Phi 7-5). It’s funny how things work out. Let’s take the game tomorrow and pray that we play Nats tough.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
Oh and how sick is it that our home record is 51-20.
romone_braves91 - September 11, 2010
allow me if you will...
to point out the point where Philly lost 4 to the Astros…you’re right, its a crazy game. I know Philly Phans who were as nervous after that as we were after the Pirates.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
The thing is, I hate ESPN but it’s really the only sports network out there. I watch it for the highlights and news, but I hate their “analysis”…I like Tim Kurkjian though.

MLB Network?
I have ATT so I lack it, but catch it when I can.
Kolb-Wickman Effect - September 11, 2010
I've talked MLB Net up here
But they’ve really rubbed salt in my eye lately by giving Eric Byrnes so much screentime. He’s making me appreciate the relatively reserved and dignified moves of Rex Hudler.
As for ESPN, they’re pretty much a joke. I like Tim and I’m more or less okay with Olney, but for the most part, they think of baseball as something to be put up with until football season starts. Then, other than daily episodes of As The Yankees n’ Sox Turn, it’s the functional equivalent of polo as far as they’re concerned.

Stars might be aligned for Sunday night's game
Hudson >> Lohse (getting Hudson back in the win column would be huge)
Cincy won again tonight on a walkoff (Cardinals might be feeling rather discouraged)
Sunday night baseball (late getaway game for the Cards and the Braves actually stay at home for another series)
We would really need to take advantage of our 10 remaining home games.

Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 12, 2010

Standing room only folks! That’s how it needs to be from here on out! Hanson pitched great today that double by Pujols was maybe the hardest hit ball all day off him. Also BC really needs to let Venters rest! Heyward’s HR was smoked too!
Jay212033 - September 12, 2010
Oh and
LaRussa had a valid argument about the play at 2B when Gonzo tried to fake the runner like he had the ball so he wouldn’t advance to 3B. Gonzo actually touch the runner without the ball, the runner should’ve been awarded 3B.
Jay212033 - September 12, 2010
He wasn't going to third.
He had already stopped. He would have been out by 75 feet if he’d tried to advance. The only thing Gonzalez really got out of it was the satisfaction of being rotten, which is something Tony “Catcher’s Box” LaRussa has a virtual PhD in.
Sam Jethroe - September 12, 2010
he touched him but did not prevent him from going to third. The runner could have ran to third if he knew what was going on

I see a lot of people bitching about how ESPN counted this team out...
But I can’t even begin to comment on how many people who comment on this blog started counting this team out over the last few days. The series against the Pirates… the beginning against the Cards… the Marlins loss… can we get on board now? For real please?
I hope everybody saw the AJC tweet of the Brooks quote…
“We won’t quite. We never will.”
The team feels this way… and as fans we need to feel this way about the team and our fandom… Let me let you in a secret… WE ARE GOING TO LOSE A FEW FOR GAMES BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR… but it’s not going to be the end of the world. These aren’t the 2008 Braves… these are 2010 Braves… and they’re going to be there until the end, the very last at bat… and we need to be there with them.
…And yes, I’m a bit drunk right now

EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 12, 2010
Medds was the best....
He looked like Mark McGwire’s chubby son out there jumping around after the home run, or that fat kid from the Natural.

Frenchy still finding ways to somehow get RBI’s.
The Rangers walked off when Mariano Rivera hit Frenchy with the bases loaded in the 9th!

BeatTehMets - September 12, 2010
That's classic.
Bronn - September 12, 2010
That was awesome.
The look of pure joy on the knucklehead’s face as he ran to first. This Rangers team isn’t scared of the Yankees. That may not not make any difference in anything but it’s pretty clearly true.

First ever Talking Chop post
Hey guys, nice to break the seal on my TC registration with such a monumental game. Been following the Braves for more than 5 years during my night shifts in London, UK and happily gorging myself on MLB.tv now it is up and running. Made my first live game ever (the weekend series against the fish at the end of last month) and have to say its well worth the sleep deprivation during my non-shift days. Go Bravos.
Tim, the Brixton Brave.

YAY WELCOME!!!
SuperNewb - September 12, 2010
After today
Nats @NYM @Phi @Nats Fla Phi
11-7 Is realistic. This means we have to sweep the Mets or Nats.
BeatTehMets - September 12, 2010
Wait...
Why can’t we sweep the Marlins or the Phillies?
SuperNewb - September 12, 2010
I want to sweep the Phillies twice.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 12, 2010
I don’t think we’ll sweep anyone, we always seem to find a way to drop one in very series, especially on the road.
Lennox - September 12, 2010
Gonzo HR was the second longest for a Braves in Ted. 444 ft.
The longest was Heyward opening day HR.
Gonzo HR was in front of second highest attendace at Ted
Heyward HR was in front of the highest attendance at Ted this season.
joshant - September 12, 2010
So...
When we’re down 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth of the WS against the Yankees and the bases are loaded with two outs in front of the largest crowd of the year… Brooks Conrad will crush one that goes over the stands?
SuperNewb - September 12, 2010
Yes...
Braves before = Deepest bench in baseball (before chipper injury)
Braves now = Deepest bench in baseball (after chipper injury)
KamikaziMelon - September 12, 2010
