Tommy Hanson, Omar Infante, and Jason Heyward won tonight's game against the Mets. The Braves had just 11 hits tonight and seven belonged to Heyward and Infante. Hanson allowed just one hit and one walk over seven dominant innings. The Braves also got out to a lead very early and made it seem like a relatively easy game from then on out.
These are the types of games you love to see as September begins. Quick and quiet victories with a few players carrying the team, and the best part is that this team usually has a different few players contributing each night. That is, except for Infante and Heyward as of late.
Before tonight's game, Heyward was batting .486/.568/.919 since August 22. He had four hits today and four RBI, including doubles in both of the Braves run scoring innings. Infante had a three hit performance with two runs scored and an RBI -- a clutch RBI with two outs. These two have been great at the top of the order all season and are one of the best combinations in the game today.
Hanson's game shut down any questions we have had about him over his past two starts. The only hit allowed was a double by David Wright, which was his first hit in Atlanta this season. He was 1-32 at Turner Field before the double. Hanson also allowed one walk to Chris Carter, but was able to retire every other batter he faced.
Jonny Venters allowed a run in the eighth inning, with Hanson being pulled after 96 pitches. Billy Wagner came on in the ninth and earned his 31st save of the season.
The Braves are ahead in the series 3-0 and go for the sweep tomorrow with Tim Hudson facing Johan Santana, a matchup of each team's ace.

The real question is
how did Freeman do?
k2spitfire88 - September 1, 2010
hit two balls hard
despite an 0-3. They played a shift on him in first PA, and that was the only reason he didn’t single up the middle. Heads up scouting by the Mets.
VivaLosBravos - September 1, 2010
Two balls hit VERY hard. Thought they were both hits (I literally said “OH SHIT!” at the second), but unfortunately they were hit right at people.
Sarahbeth - September 1, 2010
heyward had 4 rbi?
what? prado had 2 of em
BravesRaleigh - September 1, 2010
Psh, slackers
atl192485 - September 1, 2010
Yeah haha
Weird wording there. 11 hits isn’t nothing to sneeze at.
sag969 - September 2, 2010
It's the four hits from the 3-9 spots that's a disappointment.
Bronn - September 2, 2010
Well
We just had two games where we scored 9 runs each. I think we can afford to not crush the ball every night.
And I don’t think how you can take anything away from this game as a disappointment. Geez.
sag969 - September 2, 2010
Dude this team stinks
When will guy guys seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?
????????@Bronn - September 2, 2010
clearly not a championship 3-9

Great game. Hanson pitched great and the offense came through.

I credit the bench heyward post for his recent awesomeness

I agree
Bobby or somebody must of motivated him…he looked like the big red devil again!
bravestatoo - September 2, 2010
The Nationals are a sad, sad organization
I love how classy Atlanta is
KJDH2154 - September 1, 2010
classy? Not sure what you dislike in Washington unless this is a Dibble comment.
VivaLosBravos - September 1, 2010
just kidding
missed the Morgan incident. Still maybe unfair to generalize based on one player. We did have John Rocker that one time.
VivaLosBravos - September 1, 2010
The definition of class, that man
No wait, crass. I meant crass, not class.
Bronn - September 1, 2010
I will admit, I loved Rocker for what he did on the field….off of it was unacceptable, but he never did near as much on the field as Morgan has done in the past week. And to have Riggleman sit there and defend him for charging the mound after all the shit he did to deserve both those pitches thrown at him, I don’t agree, but that’s just my opinion
KJDH2154 - September 1, 2010
what else happened this week with Morgan?
traphicg - September 2, 2010
Some of it is really blown out of propotion, I think
He rammed into Bryan Anderson, the Cardinal’s catcher, on either Friday or Saturday, and it was a cheap hit-the catcher didn’t even have the ball, there wasn’t a play at the plate, and to top it off, Nyjer didn’t even end up touching home. His manager suspended him for that because he didn’t want Morgan to take one in the ear hole.
Then, Tuesday night, in a 10th inning game, he collided with Brett Hayes at the plate in a much more legitimate situation, trying to score from second in the extras when the throw had beaten him. He did some damage to Hayes, though, who suffered dislocated his shoulder.
So in the fourth inning tonight, the Marlins were up big and beaned Nyjer when they had a 16-4 lead. Nyjer took advantage and stole two bases before coming around to score. I really don’t know why the Marlins should have a problem with that-I guess you shouldn’t be playing to win after you get beaned? Regardless, they threw at him again, and he wasn’t going to put up with it since he felt he’d already taken his licks, so he charged the mound and it was a pretty nasty brawl.
Bronn - September 2, 2010
I agree wth every word of this
I guess he’s supposed to just acquiese to being ten runs down and stop trying.
He’s got plenty to answer for and be criticized over, but stealing two bases when you’re behind is most definitely not one of them.
Sam Jethroe - September 2, 2010
Agreed.
He got beaned, took his base and moved on. Don’t fault him for stealing bases when they are down runs. If they were up by 10, different story. The 2nd attempt by the Marlins to hit him was stupid and I don’t blame him for charging the mound. Hopefully Gaby Sanchez will be suspended for this.
Southern IN Chopper - September 2, 2010
Watching Gaby Sanchez come in hard and fast...
as soon as Morgan gets to Volstad is getting me all day. He trucked the little man.
Mr. Sanchez - September 2, 2010
Loved what he did on the mound, liked the guy off
Totally agree with him on public transportation, it’s disgusting. Rocker was a real intelligent guy and good student by all accounts, he was an emotional, outspoken guy and didn’t let anyone tell him how to think.
15ks - September 2, 2010
You know he wasn't talking about public transportation. The guy acted like a ignorant fool.
FitzFan - September 2, 2010
Bingo,...
the comment wasn’t about “public transportation”, more about the people he claimed were on it.
Mr. Sanchez - September 2, 2010
a ignorant fool you say? must be true
Everybody must be the same, we should all just love everybody.
15ks - September 2, 2010
I’d DFA Morgan if I were the Nats….That behavior doesn’t belong in baseball and screaming at the fans walking off just adds insult to injury.
kauf67 - September 1, 2010
I hope MLB suspends him indefinately
The rest of this year and into next….he’s brought this all on himself
KJDH2154 - September 1, 2010
that and he always gets us...
on and running wild. I’d love to not have to see him anymore.
Mr. Sanchez - September 2, 2010
The charging of the mound I can stomach. It was obvious that they threw at him the second time, and sometimes guys just can’t walk away…fine.
Gesturing to the Marlin’s fans acting like “I’m the shit” is something totally different. I used to see that crap after two gang members got into a fight in High School.
I hope they take his actions walking off the field into consideration when MLB rules on his punishment.
p.s. Did you see Dunn in the video? Damn is that man big. He fell on his ass though.
dragonhawk26 - September 2, 2010
Hell of a clothsline from Sanchez, haha. I thought he deserved to be thrown at the 2nd time, anyway. On the replay you can clearly see him screaming “Fuck you” to the fans while beating his chest walking off the field.
kauf67 - September 2, 2010
Yeah...
A bit much there, Tony Plush — not very gentlemanly.
sddbaker - September 2, 2010
Umm 4 + 1 = 5
So there is no way Heyward had 4 rbi and Infante 1 because we only scored a total of 4 runs……………….just saying. :)
KC Ryan - September 1, 2010
Jason Heyward can make it happen!
MBL1 - September 1, 2010 via mobile
If Heyward says he got 4 rbi’s, who’s gonna correct him?
Creek Johnson - September 2, 2010
Heyward once crossed the street....
no one dared question his intentions
traphicg - September 2, 2010
Frank Wren has a similar sense of humor as the TC community
If you’re a big-name rookie making your first big-league start, this isn’t the city for you. Jason Heyward’s three-run homer on his first swing on Opening Day set the bar almost impossibly high. I mean, what was there for poor Freddie Freeman to do except hit a grand slam on Swing No. 1?
And if Freeman didn’t, Frank Wren was asked, what would be the Braves’ reaction? "Send him back," Wren said. "We can still send him back."

KJDH2154 - September 1, 2010
The Freeman Shift
I was very surprised to see it really. I guess on the infield he pulls a bit more but overall he uses left field plenty. I guess that’s what the Mets’ scouting reports said to do though.
It’ll be interesting to see how other teams play him down the stretch
elucas91 - September 1, 2010
it is a shame that he has to make an adjustment already but
Yo in the bigs now! It is great to see J-Hey spoil the shift!
bravestatoo - September 2, 2010
nice quiet easy win for the Braves!
but the Marlins and Nationals… what the hell.

VivaLosBravos - September 1, 2010

justincredubil02 - September 2, 2010
So
Uhm.
How bout that Infante?
Like, do you cheer for him when he gets a hit? I’m really curious.
sag969 - September 2, 2010
bench him
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 2, 2010
move him down in the line-up
Bronn - September 2, 2010
Why wouldn’t I?
justincredubil02 - September 2, 2010
Good, Braves style game
Not too much offense but great pitching and error-less defense
Jason Heyward is pretty damn good
Freeman had 2 base hits if it weren’t for the shirt and looked pretty good besides that K
Nice to see we got the good Hanson again and hope we continue to see this Hanson from now and on
KINGSLYTUT - September 1, 2010
what was wrong with Freddie’s shirt
MBL1 - September 1, 2010 via mobile

I think he meant “shift”
Freeman just can’t hit when they have that damn shirt on.
VivaLosBravos - September 1, 2010

KINGSLYTUT - September 1, 2010
My master plan succeeded.
And I fully believe that I am Hanson’s good luck charm. It’s ridiculous, but the proof is in the wonderfully delicious chocolate pudding.
I don’t pay attention to the game on Friday (after saying I was going, but then not being able to), and he doesn’t pitch well. I go to the game tonight, and he gets his first win in almost two months. Neat.

As great as JayHey has been
I still can’t help but wish that he’d been healthy all year. A full 162 of what we saw in April and what we’ve seen recently and he’d be seriously bucking to joing the Fred Lynn-Ichiro club.
As it is, I seriously hope he’s shamed the fools (looking at you, Valentine) who thought that Ike Davis was going to be ROY over him.
Sam Jethroe - September 1, 2010

If Infante makes both the ASG and wins the batting title in the same year.
sag969 - September 2, 2010
He will.
And hopefully get a ring out of it.
I. Want. Phillie.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 2, 2010
That's another scenario
In which a bunch of snide, stupid people get to have a big STFU Sandwich.
Sam Jethroe - September 2, 2010
I've already been told
By one person, that even if Infante finishes the year w/a batting average around .340, they still won’t really believe that he can play that good. “Not until next year” or something to that effect.
sag969 - September 2, 2010
Just to be clear here
Especially after that thing a week or so ago looming in the background, I am NOT talking about anyone around here when I write “snide, stupid people.” I’m referring to that Yahoo! yahoo and all of the other mainstream sports media asswipes who dismissed Omar out of hand at the All Star break.
Sam Jethroe - September 2, 2010
there are definitely not any snide, stupid people here. none.
fandave - September 2, 2010
some people are fools.
alot of them are the same ones that were saying the same things about Prado.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 2, 2010
His magic number is 36
Right now. 36 hits gets him to .327, assuming the rest of his PAs are hitless at bats. Joey Votto is the current leader at .325.
So, 26 hits in 29 team games. Completely doable, assuming he doesn’t get a ton of rest days.
Bronn - September 2, 2010
i've been listening to the SNY announcers
and they keep mentioning something to the effect of 40 PA’s qualifying him for the batting title. according to ESPN, infante has 350 PAs. at 502 appearances per game to qualify, there’s no way they’re accurate. maybe 40 hits? if he gets 40 hits in 90 more PAs (about 3 per game), that puts him at .365 ish (161/440). If the rest of the theoretical ABs are accounted for, he’d have a batting title entry of .320 (161/502), which is lower than votto at the moment.
Long story short: it’ll be tough. it seems to me he’ll need to hit about .500 the rest of the way to qualify and get no days off, unless i’m doing something wrong here.
how did you arrive at 36?
pfoley - September 2, 2010
of course it’s entirely possible that espn reports ABs, which walks and sacrifices etc don’t count towards, and not PAs, in which case infante might be 40 PAs away, though i doubt it. does anyone know where i can find accurate PAs for infante?
pfoley - September 2, 2010
according to baseball-reference.com
He has 370 PAs and 346 AB with 118 H, giving him a .341. Now you can do the math. We can assume that he probably won’t hit 502. So lets say that he then gets 36 hits. that’s 36 more ABs (and PAs), so now we have 406 PAs and 382 ABs. Adding the 0 for 99 to make up the ABs (hitless at bats + the makeup at bats, of course this is the super-conservative estimate with no BBs or SACs to pad his PAs) gives him a 154 H / 481 AB. That’s a .320 BA. So he’s definitely close with the 36 number, especially given the extreme conservative params of my estimate.
Xshare - September 2, 2010
I'm willing to bet that many mainstream bozos
Don’t know about that wrinkle in the rules and will absolutely shit a brick if Albert or Votto loses a chance at the TC because of it.
Sam Jethroe - September 2, 2010
I can kinda hope so
award6 - September 2, 2010
*I kinda hope so
bleh
award6 - September 2, 2010
shit --- didn't include tonight!!
Add 3 hits, 4 ABs and 4 more PAs to my totals and it means that Bronn’s math is sound.
Xshare - September 2, 2010
works for me
thanks
pfoley - September 2, 2010
But that assumes Votto is static...
Infante may need a higher number. Just keep hitting Imhotep, we can discuss your chances again in a week or two.
Mr. Sanchez - September 2, 2010
Outfielders
Diaz + Melky + Ankiel + Heyward
Let Melky get his bats in the beginning, Bobby. He’ll bat better later on in the game.

forgotten_glory - September 2, 2010
i remember doing a real-life facepalm when I heard that Morgan was traded into our division. the guy is an asshole. and a pesky one on the bases. all-around bad combo. maybe Seattle could use him, or something…

NL East Crown
Rookie of the Year (keep going 4-4 and its a huge chance)
Cy Young (after Waino got lit up and Halladay struggles)
Batting title (I think there might be some low level arithmetic threads above…lol)
Just sayin….

I'm guessing in 1991, Boone would have said...
…that if Charlie Leibrandt went down, there’s no way we can win with Glavine, Avery, and Smoltz. Boone just made himself out to be a fool. Has he watched Lowe lately? Am I missing something?
ryantex - September 2, 2010
I am guessing
that you did not hear that Lowe was given a shot in his elbow on Sunday…..and has not felt any better to the point that KK will take his friday start???
Anyway, he is not looking at our strengths
our #1is = if not > to their #1
Oswalt has declined to a number 3rd starter maybe a 2 on a good day
hamel is coming back so I would rank him 3 maybe a 2…..who else do they have" Blanton?…..solid 5
NOW
we have JJ, Big Red, and now Minor….who I rank as 1/2, 2/3, and 3/2…in a head to head 3 game that means we take 2 of three…or in a 4 we either split or take 3

Why is everyone at ESPN kissing their ass? The Braves get zero respect from the major media. But that’s alright. As long as Atlanta brings home the hardware, I don’t really care.
jayjaxon - September 2, 2010

how the Padres continually cried about not getting any attention or love from the media, and they’ve lost 7 in a row now. They’re getting some attention now…
Scott Coleman - September 2, 2010
so true
VivaLosBravos - September 2, 2010
I didn’t see any crying, they had a point. Now when they start winning again the media won’t mention them.
FitzFan - September 2, 2010
I guess not the Padres, but their fans certainly did.
Scott Coleman - September 2, 2010
No, the Pads have been crying
About their lack of national respect. They don’t seem to understand that all most of the national sports media care about in the NL is the Mets and the Phillies, regardless of their records and places in the standings.
Sam Jethroe - September 2, 2010
Make Venters a starter again to replace Lowe for the rest of the season. He would almost guarantee a victory in every start the way he has pitched. The braves have the best bullpen in baseball so they can afford to let him start. It’s your chance to win it all Bobby so make the call.
oily water - September 2, 2010
No. That is a horrible idea.
justincredubil02 - September 2, 2010
Agreed.
His arm would LITERALLY fall off within his next two appearances.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - September 2, 2010
Exactly.
And one of the main reasons that the Braves “have the best bullpen in baseball,” as oily water so correctly stated, is in a large part due to Venters. Take him out of the ‘pen and you’ve created a hole there. Could it be filled competently? Yes. Could someone be as dominant out of the ’pen as Jonny? Maybe. But why chance it?

Old Braves' Fan - September 2, 2010
man, Wright looked completely fooled when he got his hit, totally off balance but strong enough to get a hit. If it weren’t for that, our Hanson would of had a no-no going. Hanson looked great today.
I am surprised that Hanson hasn’t changed his delivery some, when he takes the ball out of his glove, his arm is real slow and he seems to show what type of pitch he’s about to throw to the hitter. Does anyone think this is why he’s been getting hit more this season? I remember hearing that he may have been tipping pitches, but could his delivery have anything to do with it?
Sparhawk - September 2, 2010
Hanson's Mechanics
I don’t think are really that big of an issue. Yes, he has a long arm action out of the glove, but he also has a big body and seems to do a pretty good job of keeping his throwing arm behind his body and hiding the pitch. After all, when he throws his curve for strikes it still ties hitters in knots.
Now, one thing that I saw him do tonight that I would like to see more of is taking some speed off of his fastball. I think the hardest he threw all night was 93 mph. Yet, his control was impeccable and he had some really good moment on his pitches, evidenced by the fact that Mets hitters were popping him up all night long. I would much rather see him pitch in the low 90’s with that kind of control and movement.
v2micca - September 2, 2010
Awesome game. Can't wait to get back tonight.
NCChopper - September 2, 2010
I'll share a story from BP yesterday:
Martin Prado broke his bat during BP. He came over to us fans on the field who bought tickets for BP and brought his now broken bat with him and gave it to a little boy standing there with his Dad. He signed the little boy’s baseball, the broken bat and took the time to let his Dad take a photo of him with his son and then waited patiently as the Dad showed someone else how to work his camera so he could get a photo of the 3 of them together. It was nice to witness.
NCChopper - September 2, 2010
Real Class.
Thanks, NC, for taking the time to share that with us. IMO, Martin seems to be grounded, humble and sincere. Great to hear about someone that has gained so much from baseball, is having a lot of success with plenty of recognition, yet remains “real.”
Old Braves' Fan - September 2, 2010
It was great to see. And, he and others were so nice to the fans there – giving baseballs, signing stuff and taking time for the fans there We were told not to bother the guys while they were at bat, but several came over to us when their time was done voluntarily. I didn’t have a marker with me (never been an autograph hound) but I loved watching the guys interact with the fans who were so excited to speak to the players and get their stuff signed.
Oh, and I wore my “I’ll Be Back” shirt to the game. One of the ushers told me that I should have let Chipper see it because they were sure he would have signed it for me. I decided to wear my “Thanks Bobby” shirt tonight and take my other one with me – perhaps today (Thurs) I might get Chipper to sign it for me. Wish me luck!!!

Loved your “I’ll Be Back” graphic, but had no idea you had a shirt made. Very cool. Maybe Lizziebeth, the talented TC photg, will be there and get a shot of you getting it signed by Chipper. How cool would that be?
As far as the generosity of Martin and the other players, that’s all great, but the part about the kid is what I like. I’m not an autograph seeker, or follow the “cult of celebrity” in sports or entertainment, but when someone like Martin, or anyone, goes out of their way to impress a kid, that’s class.

Awesome stories.
Let us know how tonight goes!

You did the on-the-field batting practice thing?
Would you recommend it? I’ve thought about splurging on that and wondered if it’s worth the cost. — sounds like it is. I’m glad you’re having such a great time – I’m jealous!

Definitely worth it you’re like us – from out of town and can’t make it to but a couple of games a year. You get to go right down on the field behind the cage and it’s great to observe the players interact with one another and hear/watch the balls coming off their bats.
We bought tickets for both our games and looking forward to tonight!

And...
Last night was my first time seeing Heyward in person. My goodness does the ball come off his bat like a missle.
Freeman looked very comfortable at the plate and it was great to see his debut.
Beyond happy to see Tommy pitching like Tommy again.

Do I detect drool in that post? lol j/k ;-)

Staying on the subject of Heyward
The guy is HUGE! When the Braves played the Dodgers this year in LA I went, and he just towers over everyone else. Looks like Freeman is just as big too.
jayjaxon - September 2, 2010
Yep, they are like bookends.
I got some decent photos. When i get back home I’ll have to take time and post some of them from both my games.
NCChopper - September 2, 2010
He does not tower over Glaus. Troy Glaus is a big man.
Seeing him next to Prado, though……yeah.
UMDBHIK - September 2, 2010
i saw him next to conrad...
i loled…the heyward is sooo much bigger than conrad
forgotten_glory - September 2, 2010
didn’t mean to say “the heyward”, but i guess it works…

I always enjoyed seeing pictures of Heyward next to McLouth earlier this season. The size difference is hilarious.
Sarahbeth - September 2, 2010
The sound of the ball off the bat when Heyward got his first hit was delightful to my ears.

Keep those checks coming
