The Braves will retire their second number in two years when they hang up Tom Glavine's number 47 on the Turner Field facade tonight. It should be an exciting day of festivities for one of the winningest left-handed pitchers of all time.
Here is a tweet photo from this afternoon's banquet lunch:
I'll be attending tonight's game to be a part of the festivities. If you're in the Atlanta area, you should come on out.

Thanks for 95, Glavine!

kbertling353 - August 6, 2010

10-4 - August 6, 2010
Someone please help me
This no talent ass clown in my office is trying to tell me that Ryan Howard has had a more productive career than Chipper Jones… I want to stab him in the eye with a plastic spoon
HansonManCrush - August 6, 2010 via mobile
Oh yeah?
Is Ryan Howard a switch-hitter?
Is he the only switch-hitter in history with over 300 longballs and at least a .300 average?
Oh wait….that’s Chipper Jones!
Just look up their career stats and show that moron.
MBL1 - August 6, 2010
I did but these a-hole philly fans just refuse to accept the concrete evidence and they’re only argument is “who won the WS in 2008?”… Ugh get over dick you didn’t win it last year jackass!
HansonManCrush - August 6, 2010 via mobile
Yeah...Well who won the 1995 WS?
Thus Chipper was awesomer first.
According to Baseball-Reference, here’s a list of who Ryan Howard is most like in Career numbers, if Howard’s career ended today:
Prince Fielder, Travis Hafner, Justin Morneau, Carlos Pena, Jim Gentile, Adrian Gonzalez, Jason Bay, Adam LaRoche, John Jaha, Dick Stuart
Chipper:
Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, Duke Snider* , Billy Williams * , Eddie Mathews * , Jim Rice * , Vladimir Guerrero,
Dwight Evans, Bernie Williams, Mickey Mantle *
Notice any differences?
Nope, don’t see any sure-fire HOFs on Howard’s list…Sure Howard is off to a nice start, but come on let him keep it up…Albert Belle was a stud for a while too….
Jman781 - August 6, 2010
Howard has have some great RBI numbers but he didn’t get into the Major until quite old. He is not going to get any better.
There is really no comparison between Howard and Chipper.
LEastCoastBears - August 6, 2010
When your guy is next to Dick Stuart
And the other guy is next to Billy Williams and The Mick…you should probably STFU.
A little free advice from me to your doofus co-worker.
Sam Jethroe - August 6, 2010
As Ron White would say,“You can’t fix stupid.”
rich16 - August 6, 2010
+1
10-4 - August 6, 2010
chipper has more walks in his career than strike outs
kbertling353 - August 6, 2010
Someone that stupid...
probably cannot be reasoned with.
More productive career? He does realize Chipper has, if nothing else, played 10 more years than Howard, doesn’t he?
Only a Philly fan. Geesh.
sddbaker - August 6, 2010
I love Tommy. Congrats! Wish I could be in Atlanta. Does anyone know if MLB.TV will televise it? They did last year with Maddux
eaheckman10 - August 6, 2010
Um, so I'm in Atlanta! For the first time!
I have to go to my friend’s show (Nathan Beaver playing at Eddie’s Attic @ 7 and 9 tonight if you’re in the ATL!) but Saturday we are going to see Huddy murder some Gigantes. If you are here and wanna hang out, or at least meet up at the game and say hi, text me or call me. 208-755-7629. might be a bad idea on a public website but whatever. i’m hungover. peace!
kreese555 - August 6, 2010
Back to the point of this post...
Going to be at the Ted tonight. I was at Maddux’s ceremony, and that was a great night.
Here’s to a great career!
Jman781 - August 6, 2010
As Tommy himself said...
his number best be put up on the corner. It’s the only rightful place to hang it on the facade.
Mr. Sanchez - August 6, 2010
Here's to a great Brave,
and the man who, as much as anyone, helped bring us the World Series title in 1995. I can’t wait for when he goes into the Hall of Fame.
Jacob Peterson - August 6, 2010
Isn’t it weird that the Braves released Glavine for Hanson, and Hanson is pitching tonight? Also, Glavine’s number is 47 and Hanson’s is 48. That is so funny.
MBL1 - August 6, 2010 via mobile
I keep noticing things like that! “Their names are both Tom(my). Tommy Hanson is pitching on Tom Glavine night… they released Glavine to bring up Hanson. Hanson’s number is 48, Glavine’s number is 47.”
This is how I keep myself entertained on my day’s off (aka yesterday).
Sarahbeth - August 6, 2010
if only hanson was lefty
then something would definitely be up
CoxXx - August 6, 2010
Congrats Tommy and thanks for all the efforts and great pitching you always gave us, especially game 6!!
wisco - August 6, 2010
I’m sure games are selected well ahead of time, but an event of this magnitude being on Peachtree seems ridiculous to me. Not that it matters, as I don’t have EI or mlb.tv, so I couldn’t see it regardless.
This should be a nationally televised event.
UMDBHIK - August 6, 2010
Congrats to Tommy!
justincredubil02 - August 6, 2010
Congrats to Tommy Gun
Smoltz next year?
Fatvirus - August 6, 2010
Smoltz, Bobby and possibly Chipper
MBL1 - August 6, 2010 via mobile
No, they’ll wait a little.
My guess is Bobby in 2012 and Chipper in 2013.
Scott Coleman - August 6, 2010
At the rate they’re going, the only numbers left will be 00 and 1.
UMDBHIK - August 6, 2010
and fractions
classic futurama joke haha
CoxXx - August 6, 2010
Congrats Tommy
Thanks for the memories!
HEYJUDE - August 6, 2010

CONGRATS TOMMY
thank-you for all of the wonderful memories of watching you pitch in ATL. this night belongs to you. thanks again. GO BRAVES!
williejay1 - August 6, 2010
Thanks Tom Glavine for the memories. I even forgive you for playing for the Mutts.
ChrisK562 - August 6, 2010
Thanks for the memories, Tommy!
Wish I could be there tonight – unfortunately I have to be at work from 6-10:15-ish. So of course I have my DVR set to record!
Sarahbeth - August 6, 2010
#47
’95 WS MVP alone is enough to get Glavine in the Braves HoF in my opinion but he obviously accomplished that much more
A very well deserved accomplishment.
My only hope is that when Smoltz gets induceted next year, they will reunite him with both Maddux and Glavine. That would be sweet (if that’s somehow not secretly the plan for tonight).
LEastCoastBears - August 6, 2010
Up there with all of the Braves immortals: right where he should be.
Next stop, Cooperstown
Sam Jethroe - August 6, 2010
THANKS TOMMY...
Thanks for all, specially game 6 ,1995, your best game, good luck number 47, greetings from Mexico…
