Atlanta Braves September Call-Ups

When rosters expand tomorrow Atlanta Braves fans will see several new faces, and several old faces. Top hitting prospect first baseman Freddie Freeman will be called up along with pitchers Michael Dunn and Scott Proctor, and 30-year old rookie catcher J.C. Boscan. More on that later.

The Braves optioned pitcher Kenshin Kawakami to Danville. Their season ends tonight, and Kenshin will be called back up tomorrow. Nate McLouth was called up to replace KK on the roster. Troy Glaus will be activated from the disabled list on Thursday. This is a bit of player movement chess that allows the Braves to keep Kawakami continually guessing as to what his future with the organization will be.

We all know about Freeman, or at least you should. He of the .319/.378/.521 line at Gwinnett, and still 13 days away from his 21st birthday. He's the future at first base, and the Braves will give him the requisite cup of coffee that he deserves.

Michael Dunn has been up already this season, and was up last season with the Yankees in September. He's a lefty bullpen pitcher who throws hard but has some control issues. Scott Proctor was signed this off-season coming off of Tommy John surgery. His recovery took a bit longer than anticipated, but he's been really good lately, giving up just one run in his past nine relief appearances.

And then there's J.C. Boscan. He may be a familiar name from just about every spring training for the last five years as the fifth or sixth catcher. This is mostly a reward to Boscan for being such a good organizational player, but J.C. is a good backstop with 14 years of minor league experience. He started out in the Gulf Coast League for the Braves back in 1997 when he was just 17. This could also be a good luck move by the Braves to get yet another Venezuelan on the team. Boscan will join fellow countrymen Martin Prado, Omar Infante, and Alex Gonzalez. It's a good move by the Braves, and I'm sure we'll see some feel-good stories on Boscan.

Missing the September cut for the moment are relievers Craig Kimbrel, Cristhian Martinez, and Stephen Marek. They will likely get the call once the Gwinnett season ends next week.

To make room for Boscan, Freeman, and Proctor (who are currently not on the 40-man roster), Chipper Jones and Kris Medlen will likely be moved to the 60-day disabled list. There is already one open spot as Luis Valdez is currently on the restricted list.

FREEMAN HAS BEEN FREED!

Can't wait to see Freeman!!!
FREE FREDDIE FREEMAN

YES!

The Braves optioned Kenshin Kawakami was optioned to Danville

HAHAHHAHAHAH WTF?

and will be called back up tomorrow

oh.

lol

So Stoked...

to see Freeman… Dude is going to be crazy good

Treasure his one PA a week.

seriously

I think they will get him alittle more than that but i dont expect to see a ton of work. Unless we wrap this up early, including NL champs cause we need that extra game at the TED.

Honest question:

40-man roster considerations aside, is there ever a scenario in which you would not call up someone to hang around the team for September?

The pecuniary costs are insubstantial to a franchise, right?

Stupid formatting that makes my dashes for emphasis become strikethroughs. Blah.

The cost is the cost, you have to pay everyone called up (who isn’t already under a ML contract) the league minimum for the time they’re up. Depending on how tight your budget is this can certainly add up.

It also gives players ML Service Time toward Arbitration/Super 2/and FA status, which can cost you big money down the road.

No Matt Young? What does he have to do to get called up?

He’s not on the 40-man roster, and we’d have to DFA someone to make a spot. I doubt that happens for basically a Gregor Blanco-type player.

meh.

Freeman’s not on the 40 man either… nor is Boscan or Proctor for that matter

We have an open slot for Freeman, and we have two spots open with Chipper and Medlen on the 60-day DL. I’m guessing they took Proctor and Boscan.

Oh...

I see.. makes sense… Still would have been nice to see Young, but I guess with McLouth back the OF is crowded enough

does chipper get a ring?

if he is taken off the 40 man?

does everyone on the 40 man or just the active roster get the award?

both Chip and Meds will get rings... Anyone who played a game for them this year will most likely get a ring...
What?

Chipper won’t be taken off the 40-man, under any circumstances. In fact, they can’t take him off the 40-man, even if they wanted to. No injured player can be put on waivers, which is required when taking someone off the 40-man.

He’ll stay on the DL for the rest of the season.

-C

if he is on the DL he can be theoretically taken off the 40 man, becuase we can add someone to the 40 without DFAing anyone

True

But he’s still on the 40-man when on the DL. You can substitute a person in his place, but he never comes off the 40-man. It’s semantics, basically.

-C

Don't add Proctor

There, problem solved.

Where's Beachy???

He is leading all of MiLB in ERA and doesn’t get a shot? He’d be starting for half of MLB teams today if he weren’t with the Braves!

Also, how great is this for J.C. Boscan?

Dude signed with Atlanta in 1997 as a 17-year old. He’s been in the minor leagues since then.

I don’t know if there’s a guy in baseball who deserves a call-up more than he does.

He must be very excited

Timmons?...

and a bit surprised to see Proctor. He’s struggled a good bit this year, but he is a veteran. I figured Marek should come up first.

Timmons isn't on the 40 man

And he might get nabbed in the Rule 5 draft as a result

It’s probably a long shot but I think he’s put up three straight years of a .400 OBP in AAA and has flashed some pretty good leather at 3rd base. Given a weak market for 3rd basemen, someone might take him.

Yeah, Proctor was a surprise

Obviously would have been better having Kimbrel or Marek.

Incidentally, Boscan is my secret ATM code.
The Rogue’s Wallet. That’s where he kept his card, his dirty little secret. Short, devious, balding. his name was Costanza. He killed my mother.
Playoffs

I’m still confused, O’Brien says that anyone in the organization by Aug 31 is eligible for playoffs.

But everywhere else I’ve looked says that the rule has been on the 25 man or a DL or other inactive list at 12 am Sept 1.

I understand there is some deal where any player in the organization can replace an injured player, but from what I’ve been able to find on the internet (which is not much), other than the injury exception, the limit is still 25 man and DL.

Is that still the case? If so, does that mean that Freeman is probably not going to the playoffs even if he does hit at this level?

Or is the injury exception so broad that you can find a way to include basically anyone in the organization.

Kind of...

To be eligible to play in the playoffs, you simply have to be in the organization by August 31st. This way a team couldn’t load up their teams with expensive veterans a week or two before the playoffs start.

But to play in the playoff games, you have to be on the 25-man roster. Each team gets to pick their 25 guys before the playoffs start. So if Freeman goes nuts in September, all we have to do is pick him as one of our 25 guys on the playoff roster.

That isn't it either.

You have to be up on the 25-man roster or on the DL as of today to be eligible for the post-season roster. However, if somebody who is eligible for post-season play is on the DL during the play-offs an ineligible player (i.e. one like Freeman who was not up in time) can replace that injured player on the playoff roster. It is a loophole that a team can (and several have, lol) drive a tank through.

Cool

Makes sense now. And they called up McClouth today so if they decide to use him as a PR/OF in the playoffs he won’t take up one of their DH spots (Chipper and Medlen).

Kind of a ridiculous rule though what with the big weird loophole.

I mean DL spots

So with those two spots they could use Freddie and another player pretty much whoever they want.

August 31st at midnight = Sept 1st @ 12am.

That said, I really wish FF could have been called up today.

Lineup:

Infante – 2B
Heyward – RF
Prado – 3B
Lee – 1B
Diaz – LF
Gonzalez – SS
Cabrera – CF
Ross – C
Minor – P

Nice to see BMac getting a night off with another lefty on the mound.

ohh....

i thought that was the lineup of the sept. callup…..

OMG

NATE IS BACK = CHAMPIONSHIP

Wahoo, I missed him so much!

Who goes from the 40-man to make room for Freeman? Or is he already on the roster and the official site just hasn’t updated?

sounds like we have an open spot for Freddie.

Chipper?

Is Chipper on the 60-day DL yet? Just move him over.

Does that have any carryover to next year if you go on the 60 with fewer than 60 games left? I don’t think it matters, in the end he will have missed at least 60 days this season right?

Is officially? Freeman will be called up?

Surprised not to see Marek.

I'm not

we already have Kimbrel and Venters on the team. do you really think Bobby is going to use another pitcher with no Major League experience in a playoff race, in his final season?

Kimbrel won't come up til the AAA season is over...

because of the roster gymnastics with sending Minor the GCL I assume. And Marek makes more sense than Proctor based on their seasons.

Freeman

named IL ROY!!!!

awesome

great

well deserved

LINK?

I’ll Front Page it if it’s true!

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/insidepitch/2010/08/durham-dominates-bisons-shut-out-of-il-awards.html

It must be close to quitting time… I read that url as “durham-dominates-the-shit-out-of-the-bisons”

Then in my head I thought- huh, I bet that’s a funny blog.

so when will Freeman's first game be?

Tomorrow, as will Dunn, Proctor and Boscan.

McLouth is in uniform tonight, and Glaus will come up tomorrow. Kimbrel will too.

Glaus can't come off the DL til Thursday I thought...

and wonder how much Freeman plays. It’d be nice if he got game 1 tomorrow.

Whoops…was thinking it was Wednesday.

Does anybody else feel like Freeman is going to play a huge part in the pennant race?

not really

the starts just aren’t there for him

No,...

and I’d put the o/u on total at bats at maybe 15.

he actually may

It’ll be nice to allow his brittle fellow 1B to rest w/out having to insert Hinske. Love Hinske.

you think freeman starts tomorrow?

vs pelfrey? certainly won’t start against santana.

I doubt it

I’m sure Bobby will let him take it all in, unless we get into a 15-inning game or something. Plenty of other bench guys to pinch-hit.

I really think

Freeman will primarily be a late inning defensive replacement… They say he’s got a great glove

Right. Maybe a double-switch guy, too.

His glove isn't likely...

to be any better than Lee.

but

at least the double switch and good glove gives him an excuse to get into a game and get some ABs

True

But Freeman appears to be capable of hitting fastballs! (kinda unrelated to this argument though)

His glove isn't likely...

to be any better than A HEALTHY Lee.

Thought it beared mentioning.

I heard that Freeman and Heyward used to have competitions innthe minors to see who could get on base the most, drive in the most runs, etc. Bringing up Freeman could make Jason into even more of an animal.

they are roomates also

and best friends. In the minors, they were called “Salt & Pepper”.

i wonder which one was "salt" and which one was "pepper"

i’m not racist! I SWEAR! I HAVE TONS OF FRIENDS OF ALL RACES

lol

It's not being racist

but salt is white(Freeman) and pepper is black(Heyward)

But when you make statement like

“I have tons of friends of all races” that’s what makes one doubt that your not racist.

meh

meant it as a joke.

hope not being srs
Sar-chasm

detection fail.

Does Freeman’s arb clock start when he comes up even though the roster expands?

Nope

I used to think it did, but I was wrong.

really?

wow thanks. That’s great then.

at this point, I think he’d be arbitration eligible at the same time regardless of whether he’s called up tomorrow or in April 2011

It’ll have no effect unless he’s not given the job out of ST.

It counts as ML Service Time.

September time doesn’t count toward arbitration though.

Isn't there the 10 day rule to consider for

Martinez and Kimbrel, and that’s the reason why we won’t see them back just yet?

Gwinnet season ends on September 6

BARBARO!!!

Wanted to see him.

Why?? Everything I’ve read on here about him is that he is lousy on defense and can hit singles…

I've heard he likes to shatter his legs after winning races

We might have to put him down.

Did you read the part about him leading the IL in BA.

I’d much rather have Freeman up. And at the best, he’d be our 5th first base option (Lee, Glaus, Freeman, Hinkse…)

I agree

Really surprised to not see him get called up. If nothing else for the DH position.

when will we use a DH?

September 13, 1974.

interleague…duh

When (not if) we win the world series

won’t be on the roster

We really need to trade him to the AL in the offseason- White Sox could have really used him this year.

where can I find this information about the callups?

Any idea what number Freddie will wear?

5
awesome

That is fucking brandable.

Yo! MTV Raps

And now old-school rap fans everywhere can get their fill of Fab 5 Freddie.

Ugh. I don’t like a single digit on a big guy.

Luis Valdez

I had completely forgotten about him.

team photo day

I love how Moylan has his back to the camera. Here’s a link to a larger image. Didn’t want to include a massive image in the thread: http://yfrog.com/f/ms5hkxj/

Nice pic

Reminds me of Ace Ventura.

Mclouth is going to be so good at pinch running

GO FREEMAN

Wow... Padres are trash.

They stole our “goofy backpack for the rookie” idea for the rookies in the bullpen.

Jerks.

link/photo?

it was on Jim Rome

That’s not a Braves only thing. Teams have been doing that for years.

Oh no they didn't!

“By the way, whatever happened to the Tomahawk Chop? It’s haard to hear it when only a few hundred Braves fans are showing up to Turner Field during a pennant race.”

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Why-the-Philadelphia-Phillies-will-make-the-play;_ylt=AuEKnANO62jpkPqEheLd93ERvLYF?urn=mlb-266437

yahoo sports sucks

not to mention this is a crappy article.
about Oswalt, Hamels and Halladay “Can you beat that? Prove it.”
Um yeah I can.
Wainwright, Carpenter and Garcia. HA! I win.

Huddy, JJ, and Hanson are more than capable of outpitching that trio on any given night as well.

Minor’s looking sharp too.
Not saying he’s better than Oswalt, Hamels and Halladay, but he could outpitch him. Minor is capable of that.

*them

Or this:

1. Spahn
2. Sain
3. Pray for rain

I like Yahoo Sports....

….and it was a Phillies blog and writer who wrote that. It was in response to a Braves fan doing the exact same thing today. Only thing Yahoo Sports did was post them both.

Always liked Yahoo Sports. And Phillies fans around the country are saying the same thing about the Braves attendance. However, it’s obviously not effecting their ability to play good baseball at home. But alas, that’s the only thing Phillies fans can trash and they’re taking advantage.

HAHAHA

How pathetic is Yahoo sports. BTW “die hard fans”??? They boo their own players every time they’re not winning.

I think they mean fans of the movie Die Hard. Philly fans are obviously sub par at best.

why are you wasting your time to read it

i havent read it and i dont think to read it

Better than doing real work?

maybe, depends what work

Also wanted to read it to make it that much sweeter when they get bounced by the Giants for the WC.

To say how stupid it is, of course!
I got lots dumber after reading that

after read that article from a phillies writter who said that

BMac and Glaus were easy outs and he prefered had Lidge instead Wagner. I stop reading that kind of articles

haha Bob Ford was the writer

and that was an hilarious article

The writer for Yahoo Sports must be a Braves hater…there’s been a few anti-braves statements I’ve heard from them recently.

Scott Proctor?

Okay, if he was already on the 40 Man, I’d get it, maybe. But, we’re wasting a roster spot on a guy that has sucked all year.

He's been good lately.

His arm might finally be coming around.

Can Freeman have a chance to win ROY?

If he hits .550/.610/.1023/1.633 15 HR 52 RBI?

i know that if KLaw will choose, he won´t win

even if Freeman hits 1.000/1.000/4.000/5.000 30 HR 60 RBI

how can you hit 30 homers and have only 60 RBIs

30 2runs HR = 60 RBI
15 3runs HR + 15 solo HR = 60 RBI
10 3runs HR + 10 2runs HR + 10 solo HR = 60 RBI
5 GS + 15 2runs HR + 10 solo HR = 60 RBI
etc
etc

Prince Fielder

has hit 28 HR this year and only has 68 RBI. 23 of his HR have come with the bases empty.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Frenchy is hitting CLEANUP tonight. Yeah you read that right.

remember he hits LHP better
remember he's still Francour
better is a relative term

with a line of .223/.273/.355/.629 vs RHP, his line vs LHP has to better. However, it still isn’t great at .278/.355/.412/.767

i don´t say that he hits great against LHP, just say he hits better

even if he hits .112 against RHP and ..113 against LHP. he hits better against LHP.

As you said. better is a realtive term

geez

remember when he at least had respectable power?

If you swing hard on every pitch, some of them are likely to go over the fence.

a la Rick Ankiel
Ya but

Rajai Davis and Scotty Pods have higher SLG this year… that’s embarrasing.

Hudson on the ovation after his 13 K

“I thought (Jeff) Francoeur was up to bat again, back when he was a rookie. I saw that it …”

oh I know

just saying its not a line to be fearful of from an opposing cleanup hitter is all

the combination of Heyward and Freeman

it looks to me like “Mauer and Morneau”

what do you think?

I think there are better comps

I can see that. They will be feared for many years to come. :)

Mauer and Morneau wear Heyward and Freeman pajamas.
Proctor?

Why not throw Beachy a bone? The guy should be dwarfed for his season. Bring him up, let him get acclimated, and let him make a push for the pen or back end of the pen next Spring.

Instead, Proctor and his 7+ ERA gets a chance. Booooo!!!!

Marek needs a shot too!!!

ERA? That’s it? You do realize that Procter has pretty much been rehabbing this whole year so far, right?

Rehab vs. fresh arm. Non-surgial arm vs. surgical procedure. Player who has produced this season vs. player who hasn’t.

marek

certainly deserves it. look at his numbers.
