When rosters expand tomorrow Atlanta Braves fans will see several new faces, and several old faces. Top hitting prospect first baseman Freddie Freeman will be called up along with pitchers Michael Dunn and Scott Proctor, and 30-year old rookie catcher J.C. Boscan. More on that later.
The Braves optioned pitcher Kenshin Kawakami to Danville. Their season ends tonight, and Kenshin will be called back up tomorrow. Nate McLouth was called up to replace KK on the roster. Troy Glaus will be activated from the disabled list on Thursday. This is a bit of player movement chess that allows the Braves to keep Kawakami continually guessing as to what his future with the organization will be.
We all know about Freeman, or at least you should. He of the .319/.378/.521 line at Gwinnett, and still 13 days away from his 21st birthday. He's the future at first base, and the Braves will give him the requisite cup of coffee that he deserves.
Michael Dunn has been up already this season, and was up last season with the Yankees in September. He's a lefty bullpen pitcher who throws hard but has some control issues. Scott Proctor was signed this off-season coming off of Tommy John surgery. His recovery took a bit longer than anticipated, but he's been really good lately, giving up just one run in his past nine relief appearances.
And then there's J.C. Boscan. He may be a familiar name from just about every spring training for the last five years as the fifth or sixth catcher. This is mostly a reward to Boscan for being such a good organizational player, but J.C. is a good backstop with 14 years of minor league experience. He started out in the Gulf Coast League for the Braves back in 1997 when he was just 17. This could also be a good luck move by the Braves to get yet another Venezuelan on the team. Boscan will join fellow countrymen Martin Prado, Omar Infante, and Alex Gonzalez. It's a good move by the Braves, and I'm sure we'll see some feel-good stories on Boscan.
Missing the September cut for the moment are relievers Craig Kimbrel, Cristhian Martinez, and Stephen Marek. They will likely get the call once the Gwinnett season ends next week.
To make room for Boscan, Freeman, and Proctor (who are currently not on the 40-man roster), Chipper Jones and Kris Medlen will likely be moved to the 60-day disabled list. There is already one open spot as Luis Valdez is currently on the restricted list.

So Stoked...
to see Freeman… Dude is going to be crazy good
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
Treasure his one PA a week.
Lennox - August 31, 2010
seriously
I think they will get him alittle more than that but i dont expect to see a ton of work. Unless we wrap this up early, including NL champs cause we need that extra game at the TED.
JKowalek - August 31, 2010
Honest question:
40-man roster considerations aside, is there ever a scenario in which you would
notcall up someone to hang around the team for September? The pecuniary costs are insubstantial to a franchise, right?
Ivan the Great - August 31, 2010
Stupid formatting that makes my dashes for emphasis become strikethroughs. Blah.
Ivan the Great - August 31, 2010
The cost is the cost, you have to pay everyone called up (who isn’t already under a ML contract) the league minimum for the time they’re up. Depending on how tight your budget is this can certainly add up.
It also gives players ML Service Time toward Arbitration/Super 2/and FA status, which can cost you big money down the road.
Lennox - August 31, 2010
No Matt Young? What does he have to do to get called up?
MBL1 - August 31, 2010 via mobile
He’s not on the 40-man roster, and we’d have to DFA someone to make a spot. I doubt that happens for basically a Gregor Blanco-type player.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
meh.
MBL1 - August 31, 2010 via mobile
Freeman’s not on the 40 man either… nor is Boscan or Proctor for that matter
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
We have an open slot for Freeman, and we have two spots open with Chipper and Medlen on the 60-day DL. I’m guessing they took Proctor and Boscan.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
Oh...
I see.. makes sense… Still would have been nice to see Young, but I guess with McLouth back the OF is crowded enough
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
does chipper get a ring?
if he is taken off the 40 man?
does everyone on the 40 man or just the active roster get the award?
willlinn - August 31, 2010
both Chip and Meds will get rings... Anyone who played a game for them this year will most likely get a ring...
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
What?
Chipper won’t be taken off the 40-man, under any circumstances. In fact, they can’t take him off the 40-man, even if they wanted to. No injured player can be put on waivers, which is required when taking someone off the 40-man.
He’ll stay on the DL for the rest of the season.
-C
cthabeerman - August 31, 2010
if he is on the DL he can be theoretically taken off the 40 man, becuase we can add someone to the 40 without DFAing anyone
Swo12bv - August 31, 2010
True
But he’s still on the 40-man when on the DL. You can substitute a person in his place, but he never comes off the 40-man. It’s semantics, basically.
-C
cthabeerman - August 31, 2010
Don't add Proctor
There, problem solved.
Lennox - August 31, 2010
Where's Beachy???
He is leading all of MiLB in ERA and doesn’t get a shot? He’d be starting for half of MLB teams today if he weren’t with the Braves!
Braves12 - August 31, 2010 via mobile
Also, how great is this for J.C. Boscan?
Dude signed with Atlanta in 1997 as a 17-year old. He’s been in the minor leagues since then.
I don’t know if there’s a guy in baseball who deserves a call-up more than he does.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
He must be very excited
MBL1 - August 31, 2010 via mobile
Timmons?...
and a bit surprised to see Proctor. He’s struggled a good bit this year, but he is a veteran. I figured Marek should come up first.
Mr. Sanchez - August 31, 2010
Timmons isn't on the 40 man
And he might get nabbed in the Rule 5 draft as a result
It’s probably a long shot but I think he’s put up three straight years of a .400 OBP in AAA and has flashed some pretty good leather at 3rd base. Given a weak market for 3rd basemen, someone might take him.
DCP916 - August 31, 2010
Yeah, Proctor was a surprise
Obviously would have been better having Kimbrel or Marek.
Bronn - August 31, 2010
Incidentally, Boscan is my secret ATM code.
KoKo the Monkey (T-Bone) - August 31, 2010
Playoffs
I’m still confused, O’Brien says that anyone in the organization by Aug 31 is eligible for playoffs.
But everywhere else I’ve looked says that the rule has been on the 25 man or a DL or other inactive list at 12 am Sept 1.
I understand there is some deal where any player in the organization can replace an injured player, but from what I’ve been able to find on the internet (which is not much), other than the injury exception, the limit is still 25 man and DL.
Is that still the case? If so, does that mean that Freeman is probably not going to the playoffs even if he does hit at this level?
Or is the injury exception so broad that you can find a way to include basically anyone in the organization.
The Goche - August 31, 2010
Kind of...
To be eligible to play in the playoffs, you simply have to be in the organization by August 31st. This way a team couldn’t load up their teams with expensive veterans a week or two before the playoffs start.
But to play in the playoff games, you have to be on the 25-man roster. Each team gets to pick their 25 guys before the playoffs start. So if Freeman goes nuts in September, all we have to do is pick him as one of our 25 guys on the playoff roster.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
That isn't it either.
You have to be up on the 25-man roster or on the DL as of today to be eligible for the post-season roster. However, if somebody who is eligible for post-season play is on the DL during the play-offs an ineligible player (i.e. one like Freeman who was not up in time) can replace that injured player on the playoff roster. It is a loophole that a team can (and several have, lol) drive a tank through.
cavebird - August 31, 2010
Cool
Makes sense now. And they called up McClouth today so if they decide to use him as a PR/OF in the playoffs he won’t take up one of their DH spots (Chipper and Medlen).
Kind of a ridiculous rule though what with the big weird loophole.
The Goche - August 31, 2010
I mean DL spots
So with those two spots they could use Freddie and another player pretty much whoever they want.
The Goche - August 31, 2010
August 31st at midnight = Sept 1st @ 12am.
That said, I really wish FF could have been called up today.
carpengui - August 31, 2010
Lineup:
Infante – 2B
Heyward – RF
Prado – 3B
Lee – 1B
Diaz – LF
Gonzalez – SS
Cabrera – CF
Ross – C
Minor – P
Nice to see BMac getting a night off with another lefty on the mound.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
ohh....
i thought that was the lineup of the sept. callup…..

MBL1 - August 31, 2010 via mobile

HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
Who goes from the 40-man to make room for Freeman? Or is he already on the roster and the official site just hasn’t updated?
Ivan the Great - August 31, 2010
sounds like we have an open spot for Freddie.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
Chipper?
Is Chipper on the 60-day DL yet? Just move him over.
Does that have any carryover to next year if you go on the 60 with fewer than 60 games left? I don’t think it matters, in the end he will have missed at least 60 days this season right?
The Goche - August 31, 2010
Is officially? Freeman will be called up?
Braves24 - August 31, 2010
fail
is it official?
Braves24 - August 31, 2010
yes
lingsched - August 31, 2010
Surprised not to see Marek.
dutchschultz - August 31, 2010
I'm not
we already have Kimbrel and Venters on the team. do you really think Bobby is going to use another pitcher with no Major League experience in a playoff race, in his final season?
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
Kimbrel won't come up til the AAA season is over...
because of the roster gymnastics with sending Minor the GCL I assume. And Marek makes more sense than Proctor based on their seasons.

vooodooo - August 31, 2010
so when will Freeman's first game be?
ATLBRVS_19 - August 31, 2010
Tomorrow, as will Dunn, Proctor and Boscan.
McLouth is in uniform tonight, and Glaus will come up tomorrow. Kimbrel will too.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
Glaus can't come off the DL til Thursday I thought...
and wonder how much Freeman plays. It’d be nice if he got game 1 tomorrow.
Mr. Sanchez - August 31, 2010
Whoops…was thinking it was Wednesday.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
Does anybody else feel like Freeman is going to play a huge part in the pennant race?
strider15 - August 31, 2010
not really
the starts just aren’t there for him
lingsched - August 31, 2010

Braves24 - August 31, 2010
I doubt it
I’m sure Bobby will let him take it all in, unless we get into a 15-inning game or something. Plenty of other bench guys to pinch-hit.
Scott Coleman - August 31, 2010
I really think
Freeman will primarily be a late inning defensive replacement… They say he’s got a great glove
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
Right. Maybe a double-switch guy, too.
carpengui - August 31, 2010
His glove isn't likely...
to be any better than Lee.
Mr. Sanchez - August 31, 2010
but
at least the double switch and good glove gives him an excuse to get into a game and get some ABs
willlinn - August 31, 2010
True
But Freeman appears to be capable of hitting fastballs! (kinda unrelated to this argument though)
HansonManCrush - August 31, 2010
