Undrafted free agent Scott Diamond continues to make Atlanta scouts look like geniuses.

Promotions

Shortstop Mycal Jones and outfielder L.V. Ware both got promoted from Myrtle Beach to Mississippi. This is their third minor league level this year, having both started out at Rome. You can bet that other promotions will follow, and those will be posted here.

Outfielder Antoan Richardson and catcher Orlando Mercado were promoted from double-A to triple-A.

Second baseman Phil Gosselin gets promoted from Rome to Myrtle Beach.

Playoff Hunt

Myrtle Beach - The Pelicans won tonight, allowing them to gain a half game on idle Kinston. Myrtle Beach is now 3 games back with 6 games to go.

Danville - The D-Braves lost to Burlington tonight, ending their playoff hopes. The teams play tomorrow in the season finale, and if Danville won they would each have the same record, but Burlington has a better head-to-head record, thus, regarless of the outcome in the finale, Danville is eliminated by tonight's loss.

Barbaro Canizares is capping off the best season of his career with the best month of his career, with a .398 average and 1.083 OPS in 88 August at bats. • Brett Oberholtzer did his best to try to match fellow lefty Scott Diamond, allowing just 1 earned run while missing the complete game by a single out. He struck out 9 and didn't walk anyone. In his last 2 starts he has a 1.84 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP and has struck out 15 in 14.2 innings. 3 of Matt Kennelly's last 4 hits are home runs and in his last 10 games he's hitting .333 with a 1.101 OPS.

Ryan Weber has had a very up and down year, giving up 5 earned runs in 5.1 innings tonight after giving up none in 12 innings over his last 2 starts and giving up 7 in 13.1 innings in the 2 starts before that. Overall the 20 year old has a 4.14 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP  in 95.2 innings between Danville and Rome.

  • C. Shreve 2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 2.25 ERA

Steve Foster was solid in his Danville debut, tossing 2 scoreless. Andrelton Simmons extended his hitting streak to 10 games, hitting .447 with a 1.026 OPS in that span.

    Lipka?

i’m assuming he’s hit the wall ‘cause he’s been pretty bad lately.

Probably right. I also think that the guys at the higher level were taking advantage of him a little.

    CB

You have Danville winning 3 to 2.

Has Julio been shutdown for the year? I havnt seen him pitch in sometime. Unless I just happen to miss the minor league recap the last time he pitched.

    Teheran

Pitched last Tues. Last Thursday was an off day and yesterday was a rain out so there’s only been 4 games since then. I’d imagine it was just a “blip” and he should pitch today…

He was suppose to pitch last night but the game was PPD.

    Danville

I think I prefer to see Danville be put out of the playoff hunt in a well pitched game than a 10-9 game. It’s just how our organization wants to be. To see it executed all the way down to rookie ball is nice.

I was there, it was a really close game. They had a chance but couldn’t get anything going in the 9th.

what do you think about Simmons as a defensive SS and his offensive potential?
also, what – if anything – do you make of Lipka so far getting zero starts at SS for Danville , that is, re the organization’s take on whether his future position is SS or CF?

Lipka was moved up to Danville as a congratulations for his season. Simmons is the team’s All-Star shortstop and until last night they were in the playoff hunt. It wouldn’t have made sense to play Lipka at short and not have your best player at his position while you’re trying to make the playoffs. Lipka was a lot thicker than I thought he was, and honestly my first thought was that he’ll end up at second base. I’d heard that floated around before and I think body wise that’s where he ends up. I want to start calling him Mini-Zimmerman cause he looks just like Ryan Zimmerman, in the face and body, just about 5 inches shorter.

Simmons is absolutely fantastic on defense. He’s really rangy and fast and his arm is beyond outstanding. He’s got everything you want in a defensive player at SS. It was only 1 game, so it’s hard to really judge him offensively. He was a lot more upright in his stance than I would have expected. He’s made some huge strides so it will be interesting to see how he does going into next year. He’s incredibly skinny and I wonder how strong he is, so I do have questions about whether he can drive the ball at the higher levels. If nothing else I think he’s going to get the next 2 years to prove he can be a hitter. He was definitely the most impressive guy on the field last night.

    Great stuff! Many thanks!

I plan on writing up more about it sometime this week. I will say I was incredibly impressed with Matt Lipka’s hustle. He hit a popup on the infield and he took off like he’d hit a double, making it to second base by the time the ball was caught. That kind of hustle this late in his first season was very impressive.

Sounds like CF might be a good spot...

if he’s not gonna stick at SS. I think we can find a 2B from what we have easier than a CF out of the current crop of minor leaguers. We have a handful of decent looking 2B prospects, including Elmer Reyes, Fernando De Los Santos and Phillip Gosselin. I can see one of them becoming a big league player easier than Rose, Schafer, etc.

Gosselin is supposed to move up to Myrtle Beach today.

    Diamond

Any chance Diamond travels with the ML team after the AAA season? Not necessarily on the roster, but just travels with the team to get acclimated to the lifestyle in anticipation of a call up next season. I know that’s happen with some players in the past, and it’d be a nice reward for a fine season and one helluva game.

    Roster note...

Arodys Vizcaino has been activated for Rome, and is slated to start tonight.

Vizcaino will start but is only scheduled to pitch one inning (per info from last night)…..too bad the R-Braves are in West Va and we won’t get to see him pitch again.

    But at least he's healthy
