Playoff Hunt

Myrtle Beach - Another Pelicans loss coupled with another Kinston win puts Myrtle Beach 3.5 games back with 7 games to go.

Danville -The D-Braves lost to Burlington, putting the two into a tie for the league's final playoff spot. The teams will be able to decide their own fate, as their final two games are against each other.

Gwinnett 8, Norfolk 4

  • M. Young 2-5, RBI, .305 AVG
  • T. Glaus 1-3, BB, .385 AVG
  • B. Canizares 2-4, 2B, HR (11), 4 RBI, .337 AVG
  • W. Timmons 2-3, BB, .298 AVG
  • B. Beachy 6 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 2.50 ERA
  • C. Kimbrel 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 1.71 ERA
  • Brandon Beachy was the vicitm of his own defense, as the team allowed 3 unearned runs to cross, but the offense more than made up for it and it ended up being another good outing for the Braves' most surprising prospect. In his last 3 starts, Beachy has a 1.53 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. Freddie Freeman was 0-5, ending his 10 game hitting streak. Matt Young rapped out another pair of hits, making him 7-14 in his last 3 starts. Barbaro Canizares has basically locked up the IL batting title, and his .391 average and 1.022 OPS since the All-Star break are just insane.

    Mississippi 6, Carolina 2

    T. Pastornicky 2-2, HR (2), RBI, .254 AVG
  • C. Colonel 1-1, HR (1), 2 RBI, BB, .143 AVG

  • R. Sullivan 2 IP, 0 R 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (1), 5.18 ERA
  • After a rough adjustment period, Randall Delgado seems to have gotten the hang of AA, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 9 over 6.2 innings tonight. In his last 2 starts, he's has a 2.84 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP after having a 6.48 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP in his first 5 starts with the M-Braves. Richard Sullivan continues to thrive in relief, 2.02 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP in 22.1 August innings. Tyler Pastornicky extends his hitting streak to 4 games, hitting his second homer in three games. Christian Colonel, a corner infielder playing for his 4th team in his 3rd organization this season, made his first hit with Mississippi count, cracking out a 2 run homer.

    Myrtle Beach 4, Winston-Salem 5, 13 innings

  • P. Clemens 7 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 3.49 ERA
  • T. Palica 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 2.45 ERA
  • Winston-Salem's Drew Garcia hit a 13th inning walkoff single off Tom Berryhill to seal the victory for the Dash, putting the Pelicans' playoff hopes in doubt. Paul Clemens made his longest start of the season and while 4 earned runs is too many, he's still been good as a starter, with a 2.45 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 36.2 innings. Gerry Rodriguez clubbed out his 12 homer of the year, and he's 4-7 in his last 2 games. Last season with the Pelicans Cody Johnson struck out in 40% of his at bats, this year, in a very limited amount of time, he's struck out in 31% of his at bats.

I'm sorry, but the Danville Braves

are just not a championship team.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans Franchise HR Record. . .

Cody Johnson is now the sole owner of the All Time Home Run Record with #36 today.

    Delgado

Carried a perfecto into the 7th, and both of his runs were let in by a reliever after he left, definitely a huge game for him

Pastornicky continues to interest me more and more, considering his age in AA while reportedly playing solid defense. Even if you factor in another two years of development, he’d still be a very young major leaguer, so if he flashes any bat or power at all in addition to his speed and defense, you’re talking about a potential starter

I don;t think the plan is two more years for Pastornicky...

if I had to guess, I’d think the hope right now is he starts next year in AA, does well enough to earn a promotion to AAA, and be in line to replace Alex Gonzalez when his contract runs out after next year. at least I’d think that’s the hope.

its huge when C. Johnson didnt get a k in a game

We could use Young’s speed on the big club. He steals a lot and can really hit….More than just an AAAA guy. I’d like to see this guy in Atlanta on Sept. 1st

    why, oh, why

    must he bat left-handed?

Can’t we teach him to switch hit by September??? :(

Maybe he should try it out over the winter. It’d make him more valuable than Melky for sure.

    it wont matter

he would be replacing a LH outfielder (Hinske, Ankiel, or McLouth)

Randall Delgado pitched great and has gotten better after his rough start in AA. Cody Johnson hit a hr and didn’t strikeout. Now that’s progress

Wonder if we will see Beachy in our pen in September

    Just thinking...

Cody Johnson…it is nice to see him having success. I have been critical of him. I hope his defense is progressing with his offensive game.

Delgado…looks like he is starting to adjust to AA. There is a big difference in an A and AA strike zone…not to mention the hitters are better, and he is still young. I hope he finishes strong.

Beachy…will he make his next start, or be called up on September 1st? Or get called up after his last start? Or not get the call at all.

I am a big fan of his…he had a sub 2.00 ERA in AA, and in his AAA starts, it is 2.02. That is a very good number. All 6 of his AAA starts have yielded less than 2 earned runs, and he has had a quality start everytime out. That is consistency!

Does anyone know if Cody is working on a refined swing in Myrtle?...

cause we know he can have plenty of success at the plate there.
