Playoff Hunt
Myrtle Beach - The Pelicans lost tonight and Kinston won, putting Myrtle Beach 2 games back with 8 games to go.
Danville -Danville lost to Burlington, meaning the Braves have a slim 1 game lead over the Royals with 3 games to go.
Gwinnett 4, Norfolk 5
Todd Remond dominated the Tides for 6 innings, striking out 8, but the bullpen gave away the game. In his last 2 starts, Redmond has thrown 12 scoreless innings and struck out 14. Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and he's hit .475 with a 1.247 OPS in that span. Matt Young rapped out 3 hits, and he's been hot in his last 10 as well, hitting .461 with a 1.164 OPS in that span.
Mississippi 3, Carolina 4, 10 innings
Jacob Thompson had one of his best starts of the season, going 8 innings and striking out 8. He gave up a few too many hits, but he didn't walk anyone and gave his team an excellent opportunity to win the game. After having a 6.29 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP in 78.2 innings before the All-Star break, he's been an entirely different pitcher, with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP in 48 innings after the break. That WHIP is still a lot higher than you'd like it to be, but it's been a great turnaround for a player with a promising future.
Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 8
Matt Kennelly accounted for the bulk of the Pelicans' offense, slamming out a pair of solo home runs. August has been his only good month of the season, as the catcher has hit .309 with a .842 OPS, hitting 4 of his 6 homers in the month. Zeke Spruill was victimized again, allowing 6 earned runs in 6 innings. In his last 4 starts he has a 7.02 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. Cole Rohrbough recorded the final out, his first apperance for the Pelicans since April 25th.
Rome 4, Greensboro 0
Kyle Rose extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Joey Terdoslavich has been tearing it up for Rome. In 13 games h's hitting .400 with a .923 OPS and has a hit in his last 8 games. Steve Kent makes his second straight start and his 6th straight scoreless appearance. In those games he's thrown 17 innings and has a 0.76 WHIP. Willie Kempf picked up his 4th win in his 6th appearance for Rome. In his last 3 he's allowed just 1 earned run in 15 innings.
Danville 3, Burlington 4
Pitchers Dan Winnie and Stephen Foster, catcher Cory Brownsten, outfielder Kurt Fleming, and shortstop Matt Lipka, the Braves first round pick this season, all joined the D-Braves today to help bolster their playoff run. Overall, Kenny Fleming is only hitting .224 with a .570 OPS, but in his last 10 he's hitting .310 with a .782 OPS. David Filak's inning have been very limited this year. He's started 8 of his 10 games, but he's averaging just 2.1 innings a game and hasn't pitched more than 2 in his last 4 appearances.
GCL Braves 4, GCL Yankees 0
4 pitchers combined to shutout the GCL Yankees in the final game of the season. Ryan Query's 2 run homer provided the bulk of the offense. Wilson Rivera ended the season strong, recording a hit in his last 7 games, going 8-18 in that span. The team finished with a 27-31 record, making them 5th in the North Division. Matt Lipka was the team's best hitter, leading them in at bats, hits, runs, triples, RBI, total bases, stolen bases, average, on base percentage, slugging, and OPS, and finishing second in doubles.

haha, that .000 avg for Lipka looks so sad

and shouldn't it read
…Matt Lipka, the Braves’ supplemental round draft pick…
apoxonbothyourhouses - August 29, 2010
It should have the possessive, but the supplemental round is still the first round.
cbwilk - August 29, 2010
Am I the only one
who would be pretty upset if Matt Young didnt get a call up in September?
I mean Freeman I can kind of understand. We have a couple of guys there who the team probably would trust more in the final month of the season instead of a rookie.
Matt Young is not really blocked since 2/3 of our OF has been terrible lately
drumzalicious - August 28, 2010
You’re not the only one. Young has been tearing it up and would be a great center or left option against righties once or twice a week. Then he could also be a legit pinch run option most games and with the expanded rosters it wouldn’t hurt to do so.
elucas91 - August 29, 2010
im saying full time i think he would be an upgrade over anyone we have been putting in LF or CF lately.
drumzalicious - August 29, 2010
He may be
But I really doubt an organization that made him play over 3 years of AA ball would have enough confidence to trot him out there 4 or 5 times a week at the major league level right away.
I think he could be a great asset hitting 8th and just getting on base, but I doubt it would happen.
elucas91 - August 29, 2010
im just saying he deserves a shot. Give him a start over Ankiel out there a couple of days. If he does good then leave him out there against Righties and use Melky against lefties.
drumzalicious - August 29, 2010
My question is whether is he’s good enough defensively to be an above-average CF. And I mean overall, I know he’s fast enough to have the range to play CF, but what about his instincts, routes, arm strength …?
fandave - August 29, 2010
His best asset defensively definitely is his speed which leads to above average range. Everything else is average at best or below average unfortunately. He’s really not bad at 2B, though I doubt he would ever get a start there.
elucas91 - August 29, 2010
AAA has pretty much been the Freeman/Young show lately.
Both deserve call ups
ATLandUNC - August 28, 2010
Glaus didnt make an error tonight
:)
steeeeezzzzzz - August 29, 2010
progress
drumzalicious - August 29, 2010
I would
actually be ok with Freeman being called up if Glaus was back in the lineup. Dont want too many lefties.
drumzalicious - August 29, 2010
But he did fall down on a routine grounder
his defense is still awful and he’s not making errors because he can’t get to balls
elucas91 - August 29, 2010
No, he didn’t make an error but he didn’t look too fleet of foot over there either. My wife and I went to the game and sat behind the Braves dugout on the 3rd base side. There was one ground ball that ate him up and they gave the guy a hit even though it went under Glaus’ glove. It took Glaus a LONG time to get up off the turf though. Oh, and he had a pretty horrid night at the plate.
I’m not so sure he has much left in the tank this year.
Dave_D - August 29, 2010
as far as september call ups go
my guess is that there will be fewer guys called up than you think. lets wait and see.

G Braves Corner Infield and SP Report
Atlanta wins, but Gwinnett falls because Marek come in the 8th and blows a 3 run lead just like that. But onto the people of interest.
Glaus
At Bat #1 – soft line drive base hit to center on a 2-2 count.
At Bat #2 – struck out looking with three taken strikes, all of which were pretty decent pitches to hit.
At Bat #3 – easy fly ball semi deep to the right field corner.
At Bat #4 – struck out looking again, not the prettiest AB I’ve ever seen.
Defensive Play #1 – Glaus moved over a little to his right and made a decent play, but Freeman had to help him out on the throw over to get the out.
Defensive Play #2 – medium speed grounder hit to his left that he didn’t even try on. Another play that a normal third baseman probably makes, or at least knocks it down trying to get to. Very frustrating.
Defensive Play #3 – ball hit to his right a step or two. He gets to it, but he falls down and eats a little dirt before recovering to make the throw onto first. My partner and I just kinda stared at each other for a little before just bursting into laughter. We could only laugh because the runner was slow and there was time to make the out.
Summary : Decent effor at the plate. Didn’t hit anything hard and struck out twice without a fight. In the field he didn’t make an error, but twice he made a routine play a bit harder than it should have been. The other was just Troy saying, "Ehh, I’ll sit this one out and not risk an error". Be very afraid if Troy plays any hot corner for Atlanta in September and beyond.
Freeman
At Bat #1 – jumped on first pitch and knocked a hard single through the hole to right.
At Bat #2 – hit a hard grounder down to first near where the first one was hit, but the first baseman was playing more in the hole and was able to make a good play on the ball and toss to first to get the out by a half step.
At Bat #3 – hit a high, deep bomb to right field that was a homer if not for a wind that did him no favors at all. If there is no wind or even just a light breeze it’s gone, but no luck with the right fielder catching it on the warning track.
At Bat #4 – struck out looking on a great inside fastball that he knew was strike three before the ball was even in the catcher’s mitt.
Defense – Made all the plays again and bailed out several errant throws with great picks again. I may just eliminate this because he’s so solid out there every night.
Summary : Two hard hit grounders towards the hole in right; one got through and the other took a solid play to register the out. Hit a bomb to right that only stayed in because it was hit high enough that the wind was able to knock down. D was awesome as usual.
Redmond
106 Pitches
72 Strikes (14 swinging, 24 taken, 20 foul, 14 in play)
8 Strikeouts
6 Groundouts
3 Flyouts
Fastball was sitting around 91 and he got it up to about 93 on a few occasions. Located it very well (as evidenced by the 24 taken strikes). The ump’s zone was really wacky, but he was able to get around that and use his fastball, change combo to get ahead of hitters and either put them away or not let them hit anything square

Thanks again, dude!

Willie Kempf
This 22 yr old, 6’0" 195 RHP, picked in this year’s 27th round out of Baylor U., has been lights out.
At 3 levels, his combined stat line is:
8 W, 2 L,1.79 ERA, 14 G, 9 S, 70.1 IP, 52 H,11 BB, 67 K, .206 AVG
fandave - August 29, 2010
Do you know what his stuff is like?
Weldon - August 29, 2010
He pitches in the strike zone religiously (1.06 W/9) with tons of sink. He has a high 80s four seamer and a cut fastball that he developed in his last year of college (not sure how much he has used it with the Braves so far). His best pitch is supposedly his sinker and he also has a usable slider.
He will most likely move through the organization as a starter, but he grades out well as a reliever at the highest level. He’s particularly effective against lefties (1.46 FIP compared to 2.96 FIP against righties). Could be a solid ground ball, double play initiator.
Anybody see him pitch with the Braves? Is he using that cutter?
bwellnjonesco - August 29, 2010
Lee, Glaus, and Freeman
I understand the reasoning behind not bringing up Freeman because we need a RH bat, but at this point none of our RH bats at first base are doing anything. Lee needs more time but he’s started off at a torrid 4 for 29 pace and today he’s hurt. It would be nice to see Freeman play in this situation, especially because we’re likely to see Hinske who is 4 for 20.
Although, I’m not sure who gets send down to make room, so we’ll just have to suffer until the first of September.
mdhenshaw - August 29, 2010
On the bright side,
Sept. 1st is all of 3 days away, so it won’t be long.
Jacob Peterson - August 29, 2010
I’m not the biggest Matt Young fan (like him but don’t love him), but he’s got to be better than Rick Ankiel, right? Of course, I fully expect that Young will not be called up in September. The org. clearly thinks of him as a AAAA guy. Too bad.
Jacob Peterson - August 29, 2010
Sadly, I think if Matt Young gets a call-up, he will primarily be used as a pinch runner. What I’ve seen of him (quite limited honestly), he could be a help in CF and at the plate. I hope he gets a look in Spring Training.
bighop - August 29, 2010
You are correct, he would be a help to our outfield and the top of the lineup. He would bring some much needed speed to the team and he can play any outfield position and also 2B, so he’s a good utility guy too. I could see him as a great 4th OF next year instead of Melky as he hits lefties and righties pretty good from what I can see from watching the team this year.
Dave_D - August 29, 2010
Actually, I think Young would be a great left field platoon partner for Matt Diaz…that would rock.
Dave_D - August 29, 2010
I agree. I read somewhere, can’t remember, about the high possibilities of us non-tendering Melky due to his likely arbitration raise next season.
I like Young, and possibly Yasser Gomez to fill the 4th and 5th outfielder roles next season. Young’s ability to play 2nd too is freaking awesome!
With an unpredictable rookie season from Freddie Freeman at 1st, I’m hoping we seriously invest in a power hitting left fielder (haven’t we went over this the past few seasons). I mention this because I’m curious were Diaz would fit in this scenario. What do you guys think?
bwellnjonesco - August 29, 2010
Well maybe not Diaz, but maybe Hinske for another year? I really don’t know if I wanna see an unproven singles hitting OF in AA as a MLB backup next year from the start. Let Yasser have some time at AAA first.
elucas91 - August 29, 2010
I think the 2011 issue is McLouth’s contract. I can see Young getting a chance because we have $6.5M in CF that can’t hit or throw already. I like the idea of Young in LF with Diaz, though I don’t really like platoons. I wonder what will happen with Diaz/Melky, Diaz might accept a lot less $$ than Melky, but Melky is much younger and more versatile than Diaz, that one might come down to the new manager and his vision of what direction to take.
bighop - August 29, 2010
Hey guys im going to the Dash and Pelicans game today
I was wondering who i need to look at on the Pelicans. Like who will be called up soon?
TS BOBCAT - August 29, 2010
Ok, but gotta post a summary tonight or tomorrow of your observations and impressions.
Paul Clements, beanpole RHP, is starting. Was 7th round pick in ’08. Could maybe should be considered a top 40 or 50 prospect in the organization.
SS and leadoff man is Mycal Jones. Was 4th round pick in ’09. #29 on the Pre-season TC 2010 Community Top Prospects list.
OF and number two man in the lineup is Cory Harrilchak. Was 14th round pick in ’09.
LF Cody Johnson will probably bat fifth in the lineup. Was 1st round pick (24th overall) in ’06 out of high school. #11on the TC list. Possibly the top power prospect in MiLB, but only if he actually hits the ball.
fandave - August 29, 2010
I have Clemens at #12 today. He’s had one of the best seasons of any of our arms this year.
timmy3 - August 29, 2010
Seems kinda surprising. He didn’t make TC’s pre-season top 30 list (which I understand is certainly not infallible) and although his stats for the year are pretty solid, he’s only gotten 6 starts before today and has been limited to 81 innings. Coming off a generally unimpressive ‘09 season, I wouldn’t have guessed that he had shown enough to make a big move up on your or anyone else’s list. Where was he on your pre-season list?
