Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/24

Playoff Hunt

There are only 2 Braves affiliates still in playoff contention and we're going to keep you updated on their progress every day until they clinch their post-season tickets.

Myrtle Beach - After beating Salem tonight, the Pelicans trail the Red Sox by just half a game. The Winston-Salem Dash are actually in first place, but since they clinched the division's first half title the runner up will win the second half.

Danville - A Pulaski loss and a Danville win allowed the Braves to pull within 3.5 games of the Mariners. The top 2 teams in the division make the playoffs, so even though the Braves are currently in second, they're 2 games ahead of Burlington for a playoff spot.

Gwinnett 9, Charlotte 5

  • M. Young 3-4, BB, E (5), .302 AVG
  • F. Freeman 2-5, RBI, .314 AVG
  • T. Glaus 2-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, BB, 2 E (1, 2), .333 AVG
  • B. Canizares 3-4, RBI, .334 AVG
  • J. Thurston 2-4, RBI, BB, .263 AVG
  • B. Beachy 5.2 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 2.67 ERA
  • C. Gearrin 1.1 IP, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, W (3), 3.54 ERA
  • S. Marek 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 1.17 ERA
  • Troy Glaus had 2 hits, including a 3 run homer, but he also made 2 fielding errors at third base. Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 6 games, going 10-24 in that span. Barbaro Canizares has a healthy 10 point lead in the IL batting race. Joe Thurston remains hot, extending his hitting streak to 6 games, going 11-25 in that span. Brandon Beachy hasn't missed a beat since moving up to AAA, and while I was bearish on giving him prospect consideration at the All-Star break I can absolutely admit I was wrong. This guy is doing something special this season and he's definitely a prospect.

    Mississippi 0, Jacksonville 2

  • O. Mercado 2-3, .283 AVG
  • J. Teheran 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 3.34 ERA
  • B. Pruneda 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 3.69 ERA
  • The M-Braves had almost no offense behind Julio Teheran tonight. Teheran was good, fanning 6 in 6 innings. He hasn't been as dominant in AA as he was in Low or High A, and that's a wonderful indication of his talent that he had to move up 2 levels to find a place where the hitters had a fair chance against him. Benino Pruneda was dominant, striking out 6 in 3 scoreless innings. Since the All-Star break he has a 1.83 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 19.2 innings. He's walking a few too many, but the diminutive 22 year old righty is progressing well.

    Myrtle Beach 3, Salem 2

  • L. Sumoza 2-4, 2 RBI, OF Assist, .231 AVG
  • M. Kennelly 1-3, HR (4), RBI, .224 AVG
  • P. Clemens 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 3.30 ERA
  • J. Lowery 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K, W (1), 0.00 ERA
  • Luis Sumoza made an impact as a hitter, driving in the winning run with a walkoff single, and as a fielder, throwing out Alex Hassan at home to end Salem's threat in the 4th. Sumoza is playing well at the right time, hitting .300 with a .900 OPS in his last 10 games. Matt Kennelly, who homered tonight, has been hot in his last 10 as well, hitting .351 with a .963 OPS. Paul Clemens continues to flourish as a starter, striking out 6 in 6 innings. In 29.2 innings as a starter for the Pelicans he has a 1.82 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Jason Lowery picked up his first win in affiliated baseball, tossing 2 scoreless and striking out 4 to end the game.

    Rome 2, West Virginia 5, 12 innings

  • K. Rose 1-5, 2B, BB, SB (23), .269 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 2-5, 2 E (10, 11), PB, .262 AVG
  • C. Curley 2-5, 3B, RBI, .222 AVG
  • R. Weber 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 BB, 6 K, 4.81 ERA
  • D. Acord 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 4.40 ERA
  • Ryan Weber continues to pitch great, somehow working around 5 walks to allow just 1 unearned run. In his last 4 games, he has a 2.48 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Christian Bethancourt stays hot with the bat, he's gone 7-12 in his last 3 games, but he had some troubles on defense, with 2 errors and a passed ball.

    Danville 8, Kingsport 1

  • A. Simmons 2-4, .265 AVG
  • R. Delgado 2-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, BB, .264 AVG
  • A. Odreman 2-4, 2B, HR (2), 2 RBI, .225 AVG
  • I. Marshall 5 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 K, W (1), 0.00 ERA
  • E. Mora 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K, SV (2), 4.72 ERA
  • Ian Marshall picked up the win in his first start for Danville, allowing just 1 unearned run in 5 innings. The 23 year old wasn't particularly effective for the GCL Braves, with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 39.1 innings, but hopefully he can bolster the D-Braves rotation as they push for a playoff spot. In his last 3 appearances, Edigson Mora had allowed 10 earned runs in 8 innings, but he threw 4 scoreless tonight to seal the victory. Andrelton Simmons extending his hitting streak to 4 games, going 8-14 in that span.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Pirates 1, 7 innings

  • Ku. Fleming 2-3, 2B, HR (3), RBI, .270 AVG
  • B. Drury 1-3, HR (3), 4 RBI, .207 AVG
  • C. Rohrbough 3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K, 1.50 ERA
  • E. Silva 4 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 K, W (1), 5.30 ERA
  • Kurt Fleming and Brandon Drury provided all the offense with homers, Fleming's a solo shot and Drury's 7th inning shot was a walkoff grand slam since the game was only scheduled for 7 innings. The teams were scheduled to play 2 games, but rain forced the second game to be canceled since the teams don't meet again this season. Cole Rohrbough made his third rehab appearance and overall he's allowed 1 run in 6 innings while striking out 9 in the GCL.

    What does Beachy throw?

What is the scouting report on him? Meaning what does he throw and how fast? (My fault for being late to the party on him)

His fastball is between 93 and 95. I don’t remember the speeds on his curve and changeup, but they’re both solid, average pitches.

    Scouts

Have said his CB is a plus pitch now.

Wait…i thought his curve was always his best pitch?

It was but it wasn't a plus pitch

It was an average to above average(at times) pitch last season according to a scout that saw him last season.

Last season? Ah…well, I don’t know how much I’d put into that especially with the obvious improvements he’s made this season, but thanks.

    Oh I'm with you

Beachy has been fan freakin tastic this season and his FB/CB combo may be the best in the minors.

I heard a scout say his CB is a plus plus, and his CH is at times a plus pitch. Imagine seeing a hard deuce, fighting off change ups, and battling a 95 mph heater!

No one has a better MILB ERA this season. I hope he gets a September call up?

I was at the game last night for the first 4 innings (long story) and saw Beachy pitch for the first time. He has a 4 seamer that sits around 90-93 on Gwinnett’s gun, a changeup at 80-81 and a sweeping curve that buckles the batters knees at somewhere in the high 70’s from what I could tell. All three are plus pitches and really keeps the batters off balance. He looks like a legitimate pitcher who has good command and knows what he wants to do when he’s out there in the field.

Here’s a shot of him for all you picture freaks.

    awesome

    thanks for the help.

SWEET!!! What great pictures!!! Thanks Dave!!

(I’m one of those picture freaks…..)

    CB

How could you miss the best hitting performance of the night? Elmer Reyes went 5-5, 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI

Because I’m human? Man, I remember even looking at his name. Why I didn’t see that is beyond me.

It’s late bro I know lol! I was just jerkin ya chain!

Oh I know. I was as surprised as you.

    19, in Danville...

he’s done pretty well this year. Have you seen him play?

Not yet. Going out to Danville next Monday for a game. That’s all I can swing this year for them.

    Rohrbough

What I like so far about his performances he’s not walking many guys!

    Rome Braves

Edward Salcedo-seems lost at the plate. I’ve been to a few of the Rome Braves games this year and he definitely looks 18. I think he should have started in Danville or GCL to gain some confidence. We don’t want to kill his confidence. BUT hopefully next year he will have a better understanding of minor league pitching and will feel more comfortable in the states.

    C. Bethancourt- He is a pretty nice hitter. His average doesn’t reflect that, but he puts together some nice ABs. His catching on defense is just awful. I’ve seen a passed ball or bad throw in almost every game I’ve seen of him. He gets a little to lax on defense at times.

I don’t agree with the assessment of Bethancourt’s defense.

Well it might just be a small sample size. I've been to about 10 Rome games.

He has a really nice arm. But when blocking the ball, in the games I’ve seen, he seems to stab at it or not get the glove down all the way. He’s still a really young guy too. He has a real nice frame and looks like a beast already.

Maybe it just stood out more to me tonight. The passed ball tonight cost the Rbraves a run and he threw a ball into left field that scored a run or 2 I believe in extras.

    Bethancourt

I saw him twice and I wouldn’t say awful but he definitely needs plenty work! He’s working with one of the best catching coaches out there though!

tell more about the catching coach….we’ve got so many extra people here right now its INSANE…….

It's the same coach that taught Ivan Rodriguez

How to hone his skills behind the plate.

Thanks, do you know his name?

the one game I saw, he looked agile as a cat behind the plate. also, he made a fistful on nice stops on balls in the dirt and showed a powerful throwing arm. I was favorably impressed, which is by no means to disagree that he needs more work and polish. just my observations, for what they’re worth.

    CB, quick question

Canizares has been in our system for a while, been up in the majors for little stints here and there, but always seems to be an All-Star in the minors and puts up very good numbers each year it seems like. Is his defense the only reason he’s never seen a permanent call up?? Or am I missing something? And if that’s the case, why haven’t we tried to trade him to an AL club to DH??

    It's the Defense

Not cb, but I’ve seen a ton of Barbaro the last couple years. His defense last year was kinda bad, this year when he’s had to play first it’s been even worse. He’s just a big guy…. and he doesn’t really move well. Got a decent glove but doesn’t get to a ton.

He really might be a solid DH option in the AL or at worst a Daryle Ward type guy who is mainly a PH but can play a little of the field if necessary. If we hadn’t gotten Lee, I would have loved a Freeman/Canizares platoon in September at first

Thanks for that, I figured it had to be his defense, but wanted to know for sure, because everytime I see his name I get frustrated not knowing why he’s not with us, but now it all makes sense

Actually he didn’t look bad on defense in his time in ATL last season. I think he’ll be a good bat off the bench.

He’ll be a nice option against LH relievers in September. We’re really going to be bringing in some pretty nice reinforcements here shortly.

    Definitely

We’ll be able to PH DRoss then, Canizares will be there I would imagine, and Glaus will be up for what it’s worth

    I totally agree

    He’d be a nice option.

Canizares is in his 5th season in the states after coming over from Cuba. He’s actually only been up in the Majors once, last year in June for 5 games. He’s in his 4th year of playing in AAA and he has a .310 average and .821 OPS in 1718 plate appearances. He walks a decent amount, doesn’t strike out a ton, but he also really doesn’t have as much pop as most folks think, averaging a homer every 40 at bats. He has basically 3 seasons’ worth of at bats, averaging 13 homers a year. He’s already 30, so he’s the player he’s going to be, which means while he’d probably hit for a good average in the Majors, he wouldn’t have much power.

His defense is very bad. He’s big, bulky, and slow. In 425 AAA games he’s only played at first 219 times, a clear sign of how little they care to see him over there. The defense is a big limiting factor, because while his bat would be helpful off the bench, and you’d have to figure he’d be good as a pinch hitter with his extensive experience as a DH, he’s limited to one defensive position and isn’t good at it. Having a guy like that on your bench is a real hindrance, particularly for a manager like Bobby who likes to move guys around.

    Gotcha!

    Awesome analysis.

    But

When he was with the ML club last season he was decent at 1B though.

Those 5 games? Sure, I guess. Anybody can not look terrible for 5 games. I’ll take the 200 plus in AAA, and the 30 or so I’ve personally seen over those 5 (3 of which I actually saw too).

    Bench

I’m not talking about the guy getting a starting job just a bat off the bench and an occasional fill in at 1B.

I agree. I’d be fine with that. But like I said above, having a guy on the bench who’s limited to one defensive position, one he’s not very good at, isn’t necessarily the best plan.

    True

And that’s why we signed a guy like Hinske instead of giving him a shot.

Hard not to really like Beachy at this point

I’ve got him at #6 in the system after Kimbrel and before Salcedo. I don’t think that’s an over-rating since he’s relatively close, even if he’s just a BP arm in the majors.

Freeman and Young. Boy do they deserve to play on the 2007 Braves.

If the Braves don’t make a big play for a CF in the offseason, I would be very content with letting the little guy play CF and leadoff and steal 30+ bases with a high OBP.

Wow. Beer-brain typo. I definitely meant the 2011 Braves.
Beer-brain can have side-effects like that....

… or as one comedian puts it: “time travel”

    Teheran in Pelicans post season

If the Pelicans reach post season, would it be an option to send down Teheran to give him some post seasoning? He was a huge part of the club being where it is now as well.

Seems unlikely. Teams don’t usually move players, especially their top prospects, back down to compete in the playoffs. It’s kind of unsportsmanlike.

    But it's no unsportsmanlike...

to slide from say GCL to Danville: Brownstein for C depth, maybe Daniel Falcon back up, maybe a P or two.
And from Rome to Myrtle: Gosselin or Leonard as a reward for their strong season, maybe Cunningham to work on the IF, maybe Bethancourt since the Myrtle C’s aren’t that strong. Chris Masters could add another lefty, Hale a power reliever, Weber’s been hot since coming back up and could be a ground ball special reliever, Willie Kempf or David Francis, if they had room.

Yeah, nothing wrong with guys moving up. In fact in AAA that’s pretty much the norm since guys move up to the ML with the roster expansion.

or…..maybe Vizcaino back from the DL……

    Bullish

I do not think it means what you think it means. I assume you meant bearish.

Yeah, probably. That’s what I get for trying to use a term related to the stock market. Like I know anything about money other than how not to have any.

    how could Canizares

have a 10 pt lead in the batting race when, according to you, he’s at .334 and Freeman’s at .333?

I think you are reading Glaus’s line of .333. Of course, Glaus only has a few ABs at AAA and doesn’t qualify for the batting race.

This. Canizares actually has a 13 point lead over Durham’s Elliot Johnson, who is at .321.

    all I know

is if Infante ends up starting next year, we are really going to be missing our 300 hitters off the bench in Infante and Prado… I would consider it a real success to have pulled these guys into the starting lineup based on their numbers, but if we don’t have any guys that can hit for average off the bench, we might have a real need for him.

Besides, 1b is generally a position that back up infielders dont play, so having a back up 1b that doesnt play other positions might be rationalizable
