Braves at Cubs Series Recap

The Braves went into Chicago and took two-of-three in Lou Piniella's final series as a manager. The Braves had a comeback win and a blowout victory, along with a loss in which they mounted another impressive comeback. The Phillies matched the Braves by winning two against the Nationals as well, so their 2.5 game division lead is unchanged. The Giants have been slumping though, and the Braves have a 4.5 game cushion on the wild card as well. The more the Giants and Cardinals lose, the better the Braves chances at making the playoffs.

Game 1 Recap:
Game 2 Recap:
Game 3 Recap:

What We Liked:

Mike Minor: The young left-handed starter set the Atlanta Braves rookie record for strikeouts in a single game, recording 12 in his third career start. Minor has been incredible the entire season and has certainly impressed since filling in for the injured Kris Medlen. He got a ton of run support again and earned his second victory, but if he keeps whiffing batters at a solid pace he should see success for the remainder of the season.

Omar Infante: The All-Star utility man, now playing every day, went 7-14 with three homers, a double, and a walk this series. He notched his first multi-homer game as a Brave and flat out raked the entire series. He sure looked comfortable hitting at Wrigley, which probably makes the Cubs regret trading him before he ever even actually played for them.

Jason Heyward: J-Hey went 6-11 with two homers and three walks. His performance yesterday was incredible, getting on base in all six plate appearances and scoring four runs while driving four in as well. His OBP is currently ninth in the National League.

More after the jump:

Star-divide

Rick Ankiel: Slick Rick didn't have a great series, as he went hitless in the final two games. However, he did have the huge three-RBI triple that basically won the Braves the series opener. It was great to see Rick come through in that clutch situation and the Braves probably don't win the series if he swings and misses on that Marmol slider.

The Bullpen: The late-inning arms pitched eight total innings and allowed just two earned runs, both credited to Peter Moylan yesterday when the game was already in hand. They recorded an 8-0 strikeout to walk ratio, which is always a good sign from your bullpen. In game two, Eric O'Flaherty, Kyle Farnsworth, and Jonny Venters combined for three scoreless innings, which gave the Braves the chance to comeback on the Cubs although their attempt fell short.

What We Didn't Like:

Derrek Lee: It was Lee's debut with the Braves and he was playing against his former team in his former stadium, so he gets a pass on this one. He didn't have a productive series at all, only producing one hit in the three games. His one hit was also a playable ball that Aramis Ramirez misplayed, but not bad enough for it to be called an error. His hit did break open the series, but if he is going to remain in the cleanup spot then he must produce cleanup-worthy numbers.

Tommy Hanson: Hanson didn't give up any extra base hits in his start, but he did walk four and struck out only four. The Cubs hit a bunch of bloopers and soft singles -- a recurring theme in rough Hanson starts -- but Tommy was not exactly sharp on Saturday afternoon either.

Brian McCann: The top hitter on the team went hitless in the series but did walk twice. McCann was on fire up until lately so this is likely just a small slump. I expect him to rebound soon and start hitting as well as he usually does.

Melky Cabrera: Melky went just 1-9 with a walk in the series, which included an atrocious strikeout in ninth inning of the opener. Melky has been good for a while now, so hopefully this was just a rough series.

Number of the series: 47

This number doesn't really have much to do with the series as much as it does the season. 47 is the difference in run differential between the Braves (+118) and the Phillies (+71). For all who think the Braves season is lucky and that they won't sustain their success, they sure do a better job scoring more than their opponents do.

Woo, 47.

My alma mater strikes again.

Man that Heyward kid.

Pretty sure that was Omar’s 4th multi-HR game of his career (3 with the Tigers), but maybe you were talking as a Brave. Hopefully Heyward starts to roll again and Lee kicks it in gear. Even when they are down, it is good to know they always have a shot to rally.

They mentioned on tv yesterday that he had 2 or 3 others. Can’t remember off the top of my head now though. I was surprised he has had that many! Go Omaaaaaaaaaaaaar!

Weird, DOB said it was his first on twitter.

yea

but then he corrected it saying it was his 4th. both him and bowman made the mistake.

I edited it to say as a Brave =) thanks for the catch.

Raise your hand if you thought Jose Ascanio for Infante and Ohman would net the Braves almost 5 WAR (and counting).

Weird to find a trade that we completely dominated that wasn’t with the Tigers. Of course, Omar is a former Detroit player, so maybe it still counts.

The first Renteria trade (with Boston)? Although maybe the fact that Renteria later went to DET ex ante slanted the deal in our favor…

I’m loving that picture of Heyward and Hinske.

Hope the two are discussing the finer points of contract negotiations.

Heyward being 9th in the NL OBP is pretty damn good for a rookie. I’d like to know how many rookies have been in the top 10 in OBP. Not that it matters cause it’s not on the scoreboard or anything.

Heyward had a very good series, hopefully that means that his hand is at a 100%.

It is very impressive...

…but Posey is actually ahead of him in OBP at .385, but is short of the number of plate appearances necessary to qualify. And given that Posey’s OBP is fueled by a probably unsustainable .341 batting average, I would assume that Heyward will finish higher in OBP.

Humorously, among all National League players with enough plate appearances to qualify, the guy in dead last in OBP is our old friend Frenchy. Maybe he needs to be told that OBP is on the scoreboard now.

how many PAs do you need to qualify for ROY?

Also Posey has a crazy .362 BAbip

None, it’s a voting award.

A couple probably wouldn’t hurt, tho.

hayward hand not yet ok

in the AJC post games quotes TP said Jayson’s hand must be fine the way he was hitting in that last game but the man himself in a direct quote said the hand is not 100%…

nothing vague there, very specific…

Just a thought

I believe J Hey is not even the “Rookie of the Team”….My vote right now goes to Johnny Venters. I love Heyward and what he has done…but Venters has been unbelievable!
Could he be the closer next year?

It makes a ton of sense for him to close next year, mostly due to the fact that it allows Dunn to be with the major league team. Instead of signing a closer or another late-inning reliever, if Venters moves to closer we can add another left-handed pitcher to the roster in Dunn.

This also allows Kimbrel to work into a middle-relief and set-up type role along with Moylan. We could go internal with the ’pen despite losing Saito and Wagner and still be just as effective, in my opinion.

Martinez/Marek, Farnsworth, Kimbrel, Dunn, O’Flaherty, Moylan, Venters

I like that.

I think the only issue with that is how young the ’pen is. It could be very easy for someone to crack, although I like it

J-Hey is now officially scary again. (In a good way)

McCann has struggled against the Cubs his whole career. His .208 avg. and .676 OPS are his lowest against any NL team.

The Braves have a 79.8% chance of winning the division and a 91.2% chance of making the playoffs according to Baseball Prospectus.

I’m rooting for the Giants and the Reds to lose because IMO the Cardinals win the Central.

Also we need to win the division because I do not want to have to go to PETCO for the NLDS

I don't know if I'd put our division chances quite that high,

I’d probably say around a 2/3 chance of winning the division and 85-90% chance of making the playoffs (we’re better than the Cards, Reds, and Giants). It’s looking really good, though.

If we can maitain

Around a 3 game lead going into the last 12 games and the first of our remaining 6 games over the Philies. I really like our chances.

The key is keeping our lead around where it is at…

Think it would be better if the Braves got the Reds in the first round. That would be fairly amusing.

Sweet series,

at least the 2 games that I watched (guess which one I missed). Any time you can win a road series is great, but having a 9th-inning, last-strike comeback and a big-time blowout make it extra nice.

See ya around, Sweet Lou! You’ve never been quite the manager that Bobby Cox is, but that’s alright. You’ve still had a damn nice career. I’ll miss your tantrums most of all.
