Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/22

Today is my birthday, show me some love people!

Gwinnett 10, Charlotte 8 - 10 Innings

  • J. Thurston 2-6 HR(11), .260 Avg
  • F. Freeman 2-5 BB, K, .310 Avg
  • B. Clevlen 4-6 HR(2), 4 RBI, 2K, .259 Avg
  • K. Kawakami 5.2IP 5H 4R 0BB 9K 4.11 ERA

The Braves specialize in late inning comebacks at all levels of play this season. Gwinnett was down by two going into the bottom of the 9th inning when they sparked a rally and tied the game up. Clint Sammons hit a 2 run homer in the 10th inning to give Gwinnett the win. Joey Thurston has been pretty fantastic lately hitting.361 in his last 10 including 3 HR. Kawakami was pretty solid in this one despite giving up 2 HR. I am sure we will see him in Atlanta here in a week or so.

Mississippi 2, Tennessee 11

  • M. Daniel 3-4 2B, .272 Avg
  • O. Mercado 2-4 2B, .280 Avg
  • D. Linares 2-3 2B, RBI, BB, .241 Avg

The old Jake Thompson showed up in this gamer, surrendering 9 runs in just 4 innings of work. Sure only 4 of the runs were earned but he still allowed a bunch of runners. The only offense the Braves picked up in this game was from the old guard with just Tyler Pastornicky being the only player - aside from the guys listed above - to collect a hit.

Kinston 9, Myrtle Beach 2 - 7 Innings

  • My. Jones 2-3 2B, SB(15), .279 Avg
  • Mi. Jones 2-3 .286 Avg
  • Z. Spruill 5.1IP 7H 6R 4BB 3K 5.26 ERA

Zeke Spruill didn't show up with his best stuff today, promptly getting down 4-0 in the first inning. He did hold Kinston scoreless for the next  4 innings before surrendering another 3 runs. I consider this season just a regrouping effort for him and look to see Zeke get his form back next year when he gets a full season under his belt. Mycal Jones has put together a solid month behind his power surge and a spike in walk rate. The batting average is still down but the peripherals have been good.

West Virginia 5, Rome 6

  • J. Terdoslavich 2-5 RBI, 2K, .321 Avg
  • R. Hefflinger 2-4 2B, RBI, K, .252 Avg
  • J. Hanson 1-3 2B, BB, 2K, SB(9), .224 Avg
  • D. Jurik 6IP 4H 3R 1BB 4K

Dan Jurik got the promotion to Rome for the last couple of weeks and he was solid in his debut. He has moved through three different levels of ball this season and while he wasn't amazing for Danville he got the call to Rome. The Rome Braves also had the late game magic working. Going into the bottom of the 9th down by one they collected 3 straight singles with two outs to score two runs.

Kingsport 12, Danville 7

  • A. Simmons 2-2 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB(16), .260 Avg
  • B. Kleinknecht 1-5 2B, 3 RBI, .310 Avg
  • R. Delgado 1-4 2B, RBI, BB, K, .256 Avg

Danville pitchers got handled a bit in this game and their bats went silent after the 2nd inning until some attempted late game heroics. Andrelton Simmons is still trying to prove he belongs in the batter's box and not the pitcher's mound though to be fair he has a .932 OPS in the last 10 games. He also has an 80% success rate stealing bases this year. Maybe, just maybe.....

Happy Birthday!

Hope you enjoy(ed) it!

Happy birthday!

Has KK gotten a decision in Gwinnett yet?

I believe today was the only day he was in the game long enough to qualify

KK

Well lets all look forward to his return to the Atlanta lineup. He didnt exactly Smoke AAA hitters. The system has better.

No way

they send mike minor down

Happy Birthday

I’ve asked a couple of times, gonna try once more. Any idea when the Community top 30 prospect list will be out?

no clue, gondee usually compiles it

Thanks

Maybe we’ll see it some day.

I question your AAA game recap

There was some pretty good late inning pitching by a couple Gwinnett pitchers that gets no attention while KK gets your attention. Since when is giving up 4 runs in 5.2 innings a “pretty solid” outing.

He did strike out 9, which is better than solid.

A similar outing to Minor’s today, actually, though not as good—some runs, but lots of Ks.

5 hits, no walks

a couple of home runs is no good, but the 9 Ks are good. Homeruns can sometimes be a bit unlucky

As others have mentioned he gave up 2 homers. That not really a big deal to me and he didn’t walk anyone on top of striking out 9 batters. Also KK is a major league pitcher on rehab/stretch assignment so I am going to cover him because he is already important to the MLB teams plans. Craig Kimbrel gave up 2 runsin the 9th inning to send the game into extra innings. Not really good late game pitching. Lee Hyde gave up a run and got one out, Cory Gearrin gave up a run in an inning of relief. That leaves Mike Dunn and Stephen Marek who both pitched scoreless innings. Dunn and Marek have done that all year, its not news.

I'll agree with you

that the 9K’s and no walks is solid. Still 4 runs in 5.2 innings is what it is no matter how the runs scored. Dunn and Marek are who I was referring to and the reason i brought it up previously was because they have done it all year long.

9 Ks and 0 walks in 5.2 innings is not solid, it’s excellent — and, i think, exactly what we want to see KK do in AAA.

Jurrjens was giving up runs in AAA too...

you don’t know what exactly those guys are working on down there, and sometimes it’s just throwing strikes which leads to a few meatballs. The runs aren’t the best indicator here. They aren’t good, but the 9/0 K/BB is better. I wonder if he makes one more start down there before getting called up when rosters expand, or if they are going to keep with the 4 starts to stretch back out idea when Kawakami originally went down.

And of course, hope you have a good one yonda, and thanks for all your work with these.

Happy Birthday, yondaime!

I wonder if KK is happier in AAA—at least down there, his team scores some runs when he pitches (though obviously he didn’t get the win).

Freddy Freeman is gonna look pretty sweet at 1B for Atlanta in 2011.

He’s gotta be happier down there – he actually gets to play!

I was at the M-Braves/Smokies game. Yikes, it was ugly.

Would you like a birthday spanking?

Happy Birthday!

Thanks for all the minors updates!

Happy Birthday Y4!

Of all of our postional prospects (other than Freeman) I hope Andrelton Simmons reaches his potential the most. I’m hoping for something like a .260/.340/.400 with eilte defense at shortstop and 30-40 steals durring his prime years.

Happy birthday m8!

Happy B-Day Bro!

I really want 2 see what Simmons can do over a full season at SS. He’s been decent this season and since this is his first real chance to focus on playing SS fulltime maybe he’ll be better next season. Gotta love the SB and defense though!

For lack of a better place to post this...

…I just have a question that I’m sure a TC regular can answer. I’m trying to figure out what happens to Takashi Saito at the end of the year.

He doesn’t have enough service time to qualify for free agency, but, as most Japanese free agents do, he had a clause inserted into his last contract (with Boston) that required the Red Sox to release him if they did not pick up his option for 2010. The Sox didn’t pick up the option, and Saito became a free agent. Does anyone know if there’s a similar stipulation in Saito’s contract with the Braves? Will the Braves be contractually forced to non-tender him or can they offer him arbitration for 2011 (his final arb-eligible season)?

Cotts Baseball Contracts says he has a one year contract. Says nothing about a team option.

I don’t know the answer to the arbitration issue.

Looking back at stories when he signed...

there’s no mention of a contract clause keeping him from being offered arb, although that certainly doesn’t mean there isn’t one. It’s just the base pay and incentives for games finished that’s been reported.

Happy Birthday

Thanks for all the recaps and work you do all year. And I have a question for you and the other authors: How hard will it be at the end of the year to get a list of this year draft picks and their stats for the season? And if it is possible, is there anything i can do to help?

We’ll probably do that. We ended up with something like that in the TC annual last year, so we’ll probably end up doing it for reals this year.

Thanks

I just hope I wasn’t asking for too much. I know you do alot already

Did I see this right?

J-Terdâ„¢ is playing in Rome now? Going back through the minor league recaps, I’m going to walk out on the proverbial limb and guess that he was one of those “few plays (sic) made their full season debuts in this game but none of them debuted well,” on that 8/20 clusterfrak where Charleston womped ’em 11-0.

Great to see him back in the recaps again. I’m looking for him to be a nice contributor to the Braves in a couple-three years.

Why do I never see the AAAA Royals in these recaps?
