Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/2 - No Hitter Edition

Toledo 4, Gwinnett 6

  • W. Timmons 1-2 HR(6), 2 RBI, 2BB, .297 Avg
  • B. Canizares 2-3 RBI, BB, .323 Avg
  • W. Cabrera 1-4 RBI, CS(1), .125 Avg
  • W. Ramirez 1-4 K, .217 Avg
  • B. Beachy 6IP 5H 1R 1BB 5K 3.60 ERA

Brandon Beachy made his first start in AAA tonight and picked up right where he left off in AA. He wasn't quite as god-like as his last couple of starts in Mississippi but definitely still impressive. Wes Timmons continues his hot play by reaching base 3 times tonight including his 2-run HR. Timmons had 0 home runs through the first two months of the season but has hit 6 since June started and has hit nearly .340 with an OPS hovering near .900 during that span. He may give Freddie Freeman a run for his money as Gwinnet hitter of the year.

Mobile 0, MIssissippi 2

  • Y. Gomez 2-4 .318 Avg
  • E. Duncan 2-4 HR(6), .284 Avg
  • J. Teheran 5.2IP 0H 0R 3BB 7K 4.35 ERA
  • T. Harris 3.1IP 0H 0R 1BB 6K 0.00 ERA

Julio Teheran and Ty'relle Harris combined for the first No Hitter of the year for Mississippi and (I believe) the first since Tommy Hanson's 7 inning No Hitter in 2008. Teheran, in just his second game in Mississippi, dominated the Mobile lineup racking up 7 K and striking out the side in the 5th inning. Harris, who has been solid at Rome and Myrtle Beach was fantastic in his first appearance for Mississippi. Cody Johnson also went 0-4 with 3K in this game.

Myrtle Beach 3, Kinston 1 - Suspended

I'll do the stats on this when the game actually finished tomorrow.

Savannah 1, Rome 4

  • J. Leonard 2-3 2B, 2 RBI, BB, .284 Avg
  • RSF 1-4 HR(2), 2 RBI, K, .283 Avg
  • C. Bethancourt 3-4 .257 Avg
  • B. DeVall 9IP 6H 1R 0BB 4K 3.62 ERA

Brett DeVall had a great game tonight but it wasn't even the best in the system. His complete game is one of the few tossed by any Braves pitcher (majors or minors) this season. He had a shutout going into the 9th inning but a lead-off double came around to score on a pair of groundouts. After a hot start and then a rough week or two Joe Leonard's bat is coming around again with 3 XBH in his last 5 games. he even picked up his 3rd walk in Rome!

Bluefield 1, Danville 7

  • J. Terdoslavich 2-4 2 RBI, K, .268 avg
  • D. Rohm 1-3 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K, .319 Avg
  • E. Reyes 2-4 RBI, 2K, .262 Avg
  • A. Northcraft 6IP 6H 1R 0BB 3K 2.90 ERA
  • D. Filak 2IP 0H 0R 2BB 4K 2.25 ERA

The resurgent Danville Braves pull off another win and holds off Pulaski for 1st place. Aaron Northcraft improved to 5-0 on the season in his best Matt Crim impersonation. I hear good things about David Rohm's bat and so far he isn't disappointing me though I would like to see a little more power and a couple more walks.

GCL Braves 1, GCL Phillies 2

  • M. Lipka 1-5 K, CS(3), .308 Avg
  • D. Falcon 3-4 .351 Avg
  • W. Perez 6IP 4H 0R 1BB 4K 4.28 ERA

The awesomely named Williams Perez put together his best start of the season but lost the win after his bullpen blew the game for him. Danny Falcon continues to show that the GCL is no match for him. Unfortunately he also showed that he is no match for the Appy League. Matt Lipka continues to slump and my guess is he is probably getting tired from never having played this much baseball this long into the summer.

Yeah! Filak is back! Was he hurt?

Yes he was.

He had tendonitis in his pitching arm!

Julio Teheran = ROTY for 2011 or 2012

for both.

That works :)

Knowing our luck

He will finish third like JJ and Hanson and now possibly Heyward…

There are worse things that having a top rookie every year.

Reading this article, he seems amazingly mature and locked in mentally for a 19 year old Columbian kid getting so much attention.

“I had reached my max,” he said. “I was so focused on throwing the baseball that I didn’t know what the pitch count was. I just knew that I was feeling very good and that I could have gone further.”

In fact, Teheran was so focused that he did not realize he was throwing a no-hitter until after he had left the ballgame.

“I had never even thought about the no-hitter,” he said. “I was just thinking about working on the mound and getting outs.”

Teheran, who pitched a scoreless inning for the World team in last month’s XM Futures Game, also appears unfazed by the hype that regards him as one of the best arms in the Minor Leagues.

“I don’t think about it at all,” he said. “I am focused on what I am doing and things have been going great. I just want to keep working hard like I have been.”
Jordan Schafer

I noticed that Jordan Schafer was not in the lineup again tonight. He came in to pinch run last night. This must mean that his wrist still isn’t right. Hopefully he will come back healthy next year so we can see what he can really do.

He was assigned to the M-Braves on 7/23 and has started only 4 G and had 15 PA in the 9 G since he was there.

Yea so….I think CoJo is a lost cause at this point…wodner if the Royals would take him?

105 K in 217 AB for the M-Braves this season. fairly remarkable.
but given that he’s only 21 years old and still could figure out a swing adjustment, I doubt the Braves will give up on him … yet.

I could've sworn...

Hanson’s no-hitter was a 9-inning affair.

Might be right

Congratulations to Julio and Ty'relle

That’s got to be an awesome feeling. There are so many reasons to be excited about the Braves this season, but Teheran’s rise has to be pretty close to the top. He’s going to be special.

Best part

Harris gets the old school and conventional save by going three

i guess im the only one more thrilled by beachy than almost anything else on this list?

Seems to be holding his own in AAA. We could have an entirely new rotation next year

Um......yeah

I think you may be alone on that one lol! 5.2 no-hit innings from a 19 y.o. kid trumps a 23 y.o. that pitched great but he’s only 1 step ahead of that 19 y.o.

i did say

Almost anything =^)

That’s some awesome pitching tonight. And they’re all great guys, which is even cooler. Ty’Relle said that’s the first no-hitter he’s ever been a part of.

I want him to make the Majors just so we can have a Ty’Relle on the Braves.

Word.

And honestly (albeit somewhat unrelated?), I’m surprised there isn’t a Ty’Relle at my place of employment. One of the few names I haven’t heard.

And they’re all great guys, which is even cooler.

THIS x 1000!!!

The competition for spots the next two years is gonna get intense...

as Beachy, Minor, Teheran, Harris, Hale, Delgado, etc try and find a home in the rotation or bullpen.

this

One of the many reasons why Braves fans should be very excited about the future

-1 on Hale

He’s not going to be a starter in the ML but point taken though that we’re going to have some serious potential rotation issues in the near future.

KK’s last contract year is next year and Lowe’s is 2012. Hudson’s deal alo expires after 2012 and he will be 38 or 39. I think we have a pitcher in Minor who could easily be ready next year, if there is an injury and certainly by 2012. The rest of these guys definitely need some more seasoning and I wouldn’t rush any of them. But by 2013, watch out.

Reading fail...
try and find a home in the rotation or bullpen

Tyrelle Harris isn’t going to be a starter either, but funny you didn’t mention him. The point was we’ve got a lot of potential big leaguers (with potential ranging from #1 starter to LOOGY depending on the individual) and if even half or a third of them pan out, we’ve got excess to sift through.

how have we already forgotten about vizcaino?

wtf?

was I supposedto name every arm in the minors? He’d be amongst “etc”, along with Carlos Perez, JJ Hoover, Brett Devall, Zeke Spruill, Cory Gearrin, Jose Ortegano, AND MANY OTHERS.

Ty'Relle is the man

Since I’m very lazy (as mentioned in my fanpost), is there anywhere that I can go to see the stats on all our latest draft picks on one screen?

MiLB.com

That’s about the best your gonna get.

Yeah…I just didn’t know if someone on here made a post about it.

you should do it. seriously. it would demonstrate some real initiative, if you did.
I, for one, and maybe a even few others, would be impressed.

not that i know of...

and least not “on one screen”.

Also, we're coming up on Aug 15...

any one read, seen, heard anything recently about the remaining unsigned picks, especially Sabol or Alvord? Last I saw on Alvord was soon after drafting and he’d be tough to sign from Auburn, Sabol was quoted mid July as being a summer follow, and Kansas high school lefty Albert Minnis said he’d be a summer follow after being drafted.

DeVall

Can you realistically tell me who threw better in the Braves organization last nite? If you think throwing 5 innings of no-hit ball in the minors is a greater feat than going 9 you need to re-address your knowledge of the game.

Except when considering...

Brett is about a full year older, and in Rome instead of Mississippi, which means you may need to re-address your knowledge.

But please don’t mistake this as bashing your boy. His numbers last night are quite impressive on their own, and it seems like he is well on his way back to good health, and hopefully soon a promoton to Myrtle.

Yeah, sorry, 5.2 no-hit innings with 7 Ks playing 2 levels higher is more impressive. It doesn’t always have to be a competition.

It doesn’t always have to be a competition.

Oh yes, apparently, it does. :::::sarcasm font:::::

I started to offer my 2cents, but was afraid that the 60+ games I’ve attended already this year wouldn’t qualify my opinion as worthy…..but FWIW, Devall pitched a heck of a good game last night, and it’s nice to see him headed in the right direction after all he’s been thru.

I agree. Awesome to see him do it. Especially since the guys at the lower levels hardly ever get the chance to pitch a complete game.

What's Christian Bethancourt's career arc look like?

Does he start next year at Rome, or Myrtle? If he starts at Rome next year, the hope is that he wouldn’t stay there for very long, I would think. He obviously still needs to make some progress with the bat, but he’s definitely holding his own as an 18 year old, and a catcher at that.

He'll be in MB to start next season

But if he starts back in Rome it wouldn’t hurt his development either.

Personally, my plan would be for him to play in Rome until May 15th or so, and let him know that’s the plan ahead of time. But I have no clue if they’ll do something like that.

Bullpen coach

The bullpen coach is the same guy that worked with Pudge Rodriguez right so i’d let him stay and continue learning from him.

Who’s the bullpen coach? This is the first I’m hearing about this.
