Gwinnett 3, Charlotte 4
Brandon Beachy tossed another nice game for Gwinnett and has done enough to firmly place himself in the Braves plans. Matt Young flashed his power stick this evening and was about the only offense the Braves could muster all night, and until the 9th inning it was enough. Craig Kimbrel came on in the 9th to close the game out and gave up a lead off single. The next batter sacrificed himself and Kimbrel struck out the one after him. Kimbrel walked the next batter but struck out the next guy on three pitches. Unfortunately the ball got past JC Boscan. Kimbrel walked the next batter on four pitches to tie the ball game. After a coaching visit to the mound the 9th batter in the order battled Craig with a 1-2 count and ended up working him for the game winning walk. A sad night indeed.
Mississippi 4, Tennessee 5 - 10 Innings
Poor Richard Sullivan. Even when he is good things don't turn out well for him. He cruised through his first three innings of work and then the wheels fell off in the 10th when he allowed the first two batters to reach base. Antoan Richardson appears to be heating up again with 7 hits in his last 3 games.
Myrtle Beach 8, Lynchburg 11
All the Braves starters picked up at least one hit tonight but the pitching staff couldn't keep pace with starter Brett Oberholzter surrendering 7 runs in less than 5 innings. Gerardo Rodriguez is tied for the team lead in HR even though he was suspended for 50 games. One side note in this game is that the Lynchburg baserunners were all over the Oberholtzer/Kennelly combo stealing 5 bases during Brett's time in the game with no one caught. This is a bit surprising considering Oberholtzer is a left handed pitcher.
Rome 4, Charleston 0
The Rome Braves had a mirrored version of the Pelicans game with their pitchers completely shutting down the Charleston offense. Ryan Weber put together maybe his best start in the Sally. His fantastic sinker produced 14 groundouts to just one flyout. For the year he has a 3.78 GB/FB average which is insane. I also like seeing what Kyle Rose brought to the table. He had a flash of his ability from last season by getting on base twice and stealing safely.

GCL Braves 4, GCL Tigers 8 - Game 1, 7 Innings
The Braves drop the first end of the double header with Matt Lipka going 0-3 and the team collecting just 5 hits vs 11 K (in 7 innings).
GCL Tigers 0, GCL Braves 3
Yes you are correct, that is Cole Rohrbough making a rehab appearance with the GCL team. Myrtle Beach put him back on the active roster after their game today and we should see him make an appearance in the next week or so. Matt Lipka showed some signs of life and that gets me excited in places I'm not allowed to talk about at parties.

Same here...
the kid has some stuff as evidence by the thoughts on him a few years ago. Let’s hope he’s straightened out what got kinked up.
And Antoan Richardson has to be in the debate for AA Offensive player of the year. From a guy we didn’t have around to start the season, it seems like the guy is doing everything possible to make the front office reevaluate their thinking on him.

cbwilk - August 20, 2010
Wow
Beachy is forcing some decisions to be made about him. He could very well get a crack at the rotation next year. Of course that would mean a trade of two of our current starting pitchers as we have 6 right now (Hudson, Hanson, JJ, Lowe, Minor, KK). I still have a feeling that J.J. might be dealt this winter for that power RH bat we seem to always be looking for in LF.
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
He has the lowest ERA in the minors when you combine his appearances in AA and AAA. He definitely deserves a chance somewhere.
ATLandKC - August 20, 2010
Yeah dude has been just plain nasty this year
Say if the Braves could trade JJ for Adam Jones i’d be all for that! Then sign Carl Crawford 6 yr/90 mil contract. An OF of Carl Crawford in LF, Adam Jones in CF and Heyward in RF would be stupid ridiculous good! Then you trade KK and McLouth for anything you can get. I know this is rosterbation but I had to get one in and go to sleep cause I know this has NO chance of happening lol!

Jay212033 - August 20, 2010
Not from a tissue...
it kind of takes the real deal on that one.

buzzdeadwax - August 20, 2010
well
with our payroll having been quietly cut to 83 mil this year there is no way we can sign Crawford.
Trade JJ for a bat? yea that def can still happen
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
One decision he has forced is that he is not going to be traded. Wren has aleady said he is protecting the farm’s top pitching talents and would not trade any starters in AA or AAA. Pretty impressive to protect a kid who was not even on their top 40 prospect list (well maybe the front office had him in their plans, but blogs and media outlets had never heard of him).
Braves12 - August 20, 2010
For some reason, I see him starting next year ala Medlen...
in the bullpen working some here and there, maybe more pressure situations as his production warrants, but also as the likely 6th starter (provided we can shed an older salary in the off season).

FANTASY FOOTBALL HELP
Okay so I was proposed a trade in fantasy and I’d love to hear some opinions…
Which package is better?
Chris Johnson and Hakim Nicks
OR
Brandon Marshall and Frank Gore
Thanks.
nick9314 - August 20, 2010
What is this…foots ball you speak of?
cbwilk - August 20, 2010
I believe the technical term for it is “booting a grounder.”
J-Freak - August 20, 2010 via mobile
No son of mine is gonna play any foos-ball.
buzzdeadwax - August 20, 2010
Johnson and Nicks
No brainer in my mind. Chris Johnson is #1 fantasy player, while Gore is #5 at the most. Nicks is going to have a decent year, and has a better QB than Marshall….also Brandon has had a case of the dropsies throughout camp and pre season.
KJDH2154 - August 20, 2010
I'll bet you a dollar that Henne has a better fantasy season than Eli.
Still agree with you overall though.
J-Turn14 - August 20, 2010
I’ll take that bet.
Eli is one of the most consistent fantasy QBs out there.
justincredubil02 - August 20, 2010
It’s just a dollar….
KJDH2154 - August 20, 2010
What can you get for a dollar?
2 candy bars
2 sodas
anything on McD’s dollar menu
and certain physical favors from certain trashy people.
justincredubil02 - August 20, 2010
I thought we agreed not to speak of that.
yondaime4 - August 20, 2010
Marshall and gore
BRaves1 - August 20, 2010
Those don’t sound like soccer players to me.
Sparhawk - August 20, 2010
marshall and gore. top fantasy backs never hold up when they’re overhyped. Chris johnson won’t do nearly as well as people expect. And nicks isn’t near the threat that marshall is.
telemakhos - August 20, 2010
This isn’t 2003. Marshall is not that good anymore.
Hicks will be overshadowed a bit by Smith, but Nicks was the better WR last year (IMO).
Gore will not be a top 5 RB, while Johnson even if he doesn’t live up to expectations will be a top 3.
justincredubil02 - August 20, 2010
The first one – by a long shot.
justincredubil02 - August 20, 2010
What the hell does Matt Young have to do to play in Atlanta?
Scott Coleman - August 20, 2010 via mobile
Be taller and younger.
cbwilk - August 20, 2010
+1
Cause if it was by numbers he would’ve been here already! Dude has been awesome!
Jay212033 - August 20, 2010
Would he not be in competition for the last bench spot next year?
or is that Conrad?
Mr. Sanchez - August 20, 2010
I think someone will Rule V him if he’s not on the 40 man next year.
Lennox - August 20, 2010
i think he gets a shot next year
if we dont get an solid OF for LF.
I honestly think Diaz could play LF full-time. Matt Young would be good in CF for us.
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
Couldn't bring yourself to make an original Cody comment?
Regarding his XBH and multiple K performance?
Or has CB put you on notice?

Beachy
What a story this kid is! He has to be mentally tough and talented to pitch as well as he has all season. On top of that, his stuff is very good and I hear he is a high character guy. I’d love to see him in Atlanta in September in some capacity, maybe a spot start our a few bullpen innings. I know he is not on the 40 man, so for him to get called up, someone else gets dumped and could possibly get signed by another club. I would think Freeman, Kimbrel, and Beachy could be added and maybe Hyde or Coefield could be dropped off the 40 man (they are only carrying 38 or 39 on the 40 man right now). It is great that Atlanta has so many prospective arms on the farm, but it is sad to see guys like Beachy and Kimbrel not get a chance because you know they would both be making pitches for major league clubs somewhere else (see Resop…no longer protected and inserted immediately into the majors by Pittsburgh).
Anyway…Beachy’s story is what is great about sports. A great kid gets a chance, then makes the most of it.

What about KK?
I thought the plan was for him to mirror Minor’s starts in Atlanta. Gwinnett had the night off when Minor pitched against the Nats so I would have thought Kenshin would have gone last night.
So is it just one start up I-85 for him so far? I want him stretched out in case we need him and/or showcased so we can trade
himthat awful contract.blairblink - August 20, 2010
i believe he pitched last night or the night before.
yondaime4 - August 20, 2010
he started and went 4 innings Tuesday....
they originally said he needed 4 starts. He’s made 3, so that means perhaps one more or possibly two which would get him through to September when rosters expand.
Mr. Sanchez - August 20, 2010
sadly
i doubt he starts until the end of September if Minor keeps pitching like he has.
