On a pretty frustrating night, the Braves continued to find ways to win. It was Jason Heyward's time to shine on Wednesday, and it was a fitting conclusion to pretty exciting day and night in Braves Country. Locked up in a 2-2 tie in the 9th, Jason Heyward came up to the plate with two runners on and two outs. After working the count to 3-0, The Jay Hey Kid had the green light. Tyler Clippard threw a hard fastball on the outer part of the plate, and Heyward didn't miss it. He ripped a line-drive single just out of the reach of shortstop Ian Desmond and Rick Ankiel came around to score easily from 2nd.
Tim Hudson wasn't great on Wednesday, but did the job, and forced the Nats to ground into a ridiculous 4 double plays. He was leaving a few of his pitches up early in the game and Washington cashed in, but Huddy settled in as the game progressed.
The Nats scored the first two runs of the game for the 2nd night in a row with back-to-back RBI-singles in the top of the 3rd. Roger Bernadina hit a grounder to right field and Heyward wasn't able to throw the runner out at home. Ryan Zimmerman followed with a line drive shot into left field to score Willie Harris from 3rd. Fortunately for the Braves, Hudson settled down and got out of the inning.
The Braves could've had a much bigger 4th inning as the Braves loaded the bases with no outs, but Melky Cabrera slowed everything down with a 4-6-3 double play that scored a runner from 3rd. Alex Gonzalez followed and appeared to hit a pop fly to right, but neither Morse nor Adam Kennedy could make the play. The Braves and Nats were tied after 4 innings of play.
Not much went on in the middle innings. Hudson and Hernandez both settled down, and the Braves' bullpen continued their dominance. Once Hudson departed after the 7th inning, both Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner worked quick, scoreless innings to preserve the tie heading into the 9th inning.
You probably know how it goes from there. Gonzalez led off the 9th with a strikeout, and Ankiel fists a ball into right field for a single. David Ross walks to move Ankiel into scoring position. After an ugly strikeout by Omar Infante, Jason Heyward comes to the plate and provides yet another walk-off and home victory for the Bravos.
Tomorrow's game is an early one -- a 1:05 start -- so be sure to take an extra, extra long lunch hour tomorrow. It'll be Derek Lowe against John Lannon as the Braves go for the sweep and try to finish off their 7-game home stand with a 6-1 record.

but doesn’t let it bother him and wins it for us, hopefully this gets him very hot again and we can get the sweep and then go into Chixago with our new 1B and win at least 2/3

While Venters has been amazing, has a reliever ever been chosen for RoY before?
sag969 - August 18, 2010
YES
1952: Joe Black (2.15 ERA, 15 wins, 15 saves)
1976: Butch Metzger (2.92 ERA, 11 wins, 16 saves)
1980: Steve Howe (2.66 ERA, 17 saves)
1986: Todd Worrell (2.08 ERA, 36 saves)
1989: Gregg Olson (1.69 ERA, 27 saves)
1999: Scott Williamson (2.41 ERA, 12 wins, 19 saves)
2000: Kazuhiro Sasaki (3.16 ERA, 37 saves)
2005: Huston Street (1.72 ERA, 23 saves)

“The second part of the Braves’ diabolical plan is to rest Glaus, then work him out at third base in the minors for a time so he could take Chipper Jones’(notes) place down the stretch. Glaus most recently played third base with frequency with the Cardinals in 2008.”
CJ10JHEY22 - August 18, 2010
As several people have mentioned
Glaus working out at 3rd in the minors was actually a request by him. He wants to prove to Wren and the Braves (after a week of rest) that he can still cover 3rd base.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
While Glaus hasn’t performed lately, he’s been class the whole time, and deserves our respect.
Hopefully when his career is done, he can get a coaching job here or something, or maybe manage in the minors.
.
Broccoman - August 18, 2010
Agreed
He has been pretty awesome about handling everything.
Still, there isn’t any future with the Braves. He and his agent know that. Freddy Freeman is the future, and if the Braves will not bring Glaus back to ride the pine. I’m assuming someone like Hinske (or a similar type player) will come back next year to be a reliable backup/sub for 1B.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
that is great news
I hope he can succeed because if he can play average or even below average defense and his bat continues to heat up…..

i still feel as though we should pursue a 2B/3B as I think Infante will cool off by the end of the month.
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
I’m hoping Troy will be well rested after his trip to the DL and grind it out at third while being productive at the plate. Infante will be fine until we see what Troy comes back and see what he can do
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
if troy is at 3B
thats a heck of a lineup.

drumzalicious - August 18, 2010

Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Take out Ankiel
and replace him with anyone (Infante or Hinske/Diaz). And if you must play Ankiel, bat him 8th, for crying out loud.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
I was going to say why, but then looked up Ankiel’s stats. I just don’t see Melky anything more than a 4th OF, but he has playing good since the bad April
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Melky's doing okay
Which is more than you can sy about some other outfielders we’ve used this year, but I’m not still not terribly excited about his ABs. Even though he’s had some success lately, it still seems like there’s been a lot of bloop hits and groundballs finding holes. He had that one just horrible looking K tonight. Generally, I’d be happier with him out of the line-up, but we’re in a pretty bad position with our CFers right now.
Bronn - August 19, 2010
Melky's not great

If he can do that in AA, then wow
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
apparently,
he can’t do that in AA. It’s not like we didn’t try it.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
come on man
He has been injured most of the year. Yea when he was healthy, he didn’t do that well. CJ is 20 in AA. Last time I checked he is in an advanced level for his age, plus he has plenty of time to work on his problems
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Not saying he won't learn eventually
but it doesn’t look good at this point. Everyone knows he needs to change his approach, and he’s not doing it. Those kinds of hitters don’t have a good track record at AA, including Cody.
Call me when he strikes out in less than 30% of his ABs.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
fair enough
I agree, but the kid is young. How do you know he won’t change his approach?
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
Just because he's been so publicly stubborn
about not changing it. People change, so it’s not impossible in the future. He just doesn’t seem like the type to suddenly see the light.
Maybe once the Royals pick him up, he’ll figure it out.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
haha
I have not seen or read that he has been publicly stubborn but I believe you. Hey three years in AA and one in AAA, he would only be 24/25
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
He would essentially
be another Howard. However i’d hope we wouldnt give him the same contract
drumzalicious - August 19, 2010
you wouldn't take that?
Not the contract, but the production? Also, it would be coming from LF
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
the production yes
the massive contract no.
drumzalicious - August 19, 2010
He might be changing his approach, somewhat.
I mean, prior to tonight, he hadn’t struck in 3 straight games, and I can’t recall any similar stretches for him. I hope that’s what this demotion was about, making him rework his approach at the plate, maybe his mechanics to take a hole out of his swing. If he had to sacrifice 10% of his power to ensure he makes contact just 5% more often, he’s still got plenty of power to spare, and he turns into a solid hitter.
I’m not hopeful, but I’d like to assume he’s working on it.
Bronn - August 19, 2010
Well,
I hope so too. He’s obviously got some massive skills.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010

Thus, y’all should not mock this guy. It is only a matter of time before the Swagga Stats become another sabermetric favorite.
I can just imagine the arguments and debates on this site hinging on “Well, X has more swagger than Y.” “Damn…You’re right, he’s had even more swagger since the All Star break.” “Yep, Y has been in a swagger slump for months.” “I think there’s a pill to increase swagger, but it is banned.” “I win.” “You do.”

Phillies fans are idiots
Just for kicks, I checked out what the morons in Philadelphia are saying these days. They are already crowning the Phillies with the division, saying that we are just getting lucky. They are also insinuating that they will sweep all 6 games.
I also love how they think trading for DLee is ‘desperate.’ Uhhh, I guess they forgot that they just traded for Oswalt in order to make a lame attempt to win the division.
I hate that team, and I hate that city even more.

Yeah, it was a Philly fan, but I’m sure plenty of that shit (and similar, ridiculous drunken acts) occur in all major league ballparks. Main reason that story got such a huge reaction was 1) Philly stereotype and 2) Deadspin.

Are these people even watching the Braves?
sag969 - August 18, 2010
Yes. Its just legit doubt because he’s more of a role player and less of a starter
GoBravesNY - August 18, 2010
How do we know?
He’s never been a starter for the Braves. He did play 140+ games for the Tigers in 2004, but he played a half dozen positions.
Infante (like Prado before him), has never been a full time starter at one specific position.
Maybe, just maybe, if we give him a chance he’ll continue to produce.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
That’s a good point. We don’t. But I think in the position we’re in, nobody really wants to take that chance, yet. I think- should we clinch the division- and the games become meaningless, then it’d be good to see how he does full time
GoBravesNY - August 18, 2010
no matter where you start you should be able to hit as your position has nothing to do with your plate approach and swing.
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
i think that has been proven false, anecdotelly of course. there have been a couple of guys who have hit better once they have a position set in stone. Unfortunately I can;t think of any examples so I could be wrong.
But it does make more sense when you are playing different positions you are constantly spending more time on your defense than you would if you had one set position. Thus, theoretically as there are only so many hours in a day, such a player would spend slightly less time on his hitting and his swing.
It’s not as simple as you are making it out to be. I would like to finish by saying I don’t think Infante would hit any better as a fulltime player…his number right now are inflated by his BABiP. He is a great utlity guy but probably not a starter bc he can’t sustain this BABiP.
ANd one more thing..for those comparing Prado and Infante, you may well be right to make that comparison. Maybe Infante will be like Prado, but Prado is two years older (although some players mature later so its not that big of a deal). the kicker is with Prado we were debting whether he could maintain his ISO (which was higher than his minor numbers, he can and that wasnt a big concern as he got older and stronger) and more importantly whther his high BABiP was sustainable. Prado’s was around 330 which is high but not outrageous. this year Infante’s is 380…which is absolutely unsustainable (his career is 314). he will regress to the same hitter he has always been, which is one of the best utility guys in baseball, but not a starter.
Swo12bv - August 19, 2010
Not sure if it was a typo or not...
Infante is 81, Prado 83, so you got that backwards. Infante is two years older than Prado.
Mr. Sanchez - August 19, 2010
ya it was a typo/math fail…whatever…the point is Infante is older, and I fuckd it up…
Swo12bv - August 19, 2010
gotcha...
wasn’t trying to call ya out on it, just correcting it.
Mr. Sanchez - August 20, 2010
the main difference between the two
is prado is hitting in line with his BAbip from all his previous seasons whereas infante is not
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
actually
yes i am watching the Braves. However i do not believe Infante can sustain this as his career BAbip is .314 and he is currently sporting a .387 BAbip
in other words he is due for a regression
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
Omar's a nice little player
but if anyone expects him to keep hitting .340 the rest of the year, I’ve got a nice piece of land in down town Detroit to sell them.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
He’ll hit above .320
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 18, 2010
not even
I say he ends at .280/.290 if he stays full-time
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
For argument's sake....
Let’s say he splits and goes .300
That’s still what it takes.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 18, 2010
So
He’d have the 2nd highest average on the team rather than the highest.
Remind me what’s wrong with him again?
sag969 - August 18, 2010
Omar
doesn’t walk or hit for power, so he has to hit above .300 to be an above average regular.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
what’s his OBP?
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
30 points above his AVG
so once his AVG regresses, it won’t be that good.
His career OBP is .317 (crappy)
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
indeed
right now his OBP is like .371 or something like that
drumzalicious - August 19, 2010
woah
yea that’s not very good. He is a great utility guy, but I’m very skeptical about having him start
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
exactly!
This isnt the same as Prado. All of Prado’s numbers are currently pretty much in line with his Career numbers except his BAbip is like .10 points higher than his career BAbip.
drumzalicious - August 19, 2010
I always believed in Prado
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
His BB rate is also a bit down this year
It was basically league average last year, at 8.3%. His career mark is at 6%, which isn’t very good, but it’s better than his current 4.9%. Perhaps he’ll regress toward that even as his batting average regresses toward the mean.
ZiPS (Rest of Season) thinks he’ll post a .301/.344/.410 line the rest of the year, which is very good for a starting second baseman. He should end up with a solid line around .315/.350/.400, and nearly enough PAs to qualify for the batting title.
It’s not worth looking at his ZiPS (Update) numbers since they’re not adjusted for the fact that he’s switched from utility player to starter, so they don’t think he’ll get a lot of plate appearances.
Bronn - August 19, 2010
You can adjust for playing time
if you want a RoS WAR projection for omar. You just need a defense projection.
Ex: .5 wRAA/89 Pa = 3.4 wRAA/600 PA
Bat: 3.4
Def: 2
Rep: 20
Adj: 2.5
RAR: 27.9
WAR: 2.8/150G
So that would 0.8 WAR for the Rest of Season (43 games).
TheBravestWay To Block A Decent Prospect - August 19, 2010
Well, not exactly what I was talking about doing
Trying to project what his overall would look like at the end of the year. I can probably work that out as well. If he’s going to go .301/.344/.410 the rest of the year, I just need to give him some number of plate appearances. Conservatively, call it 4.3 over the rest of the year, gives him 185 more plate appearances this year of that slash line.
So he ends up at like .325/.361/.419 for his season slash line, assuming that he hits as ZiPS projects that he will. It’s very solid for a starting second baseman in this this league. His career UZR/150 at second is -1.9, so he’s a little below average (DRS disagrees slightly). I’d say we can be really happy with Infante, regardless.
Bronn - August 19, 2010
Ah I see
I got the defense projection from Chone. I think they do a good job.
Note that he scores very well at SS (a tougher position) for his career: +13DRS and 1.2URZ/150. It is a smaller but similar sample size to his 2B experience(660 BIZ at 2B, 483 BIZ at SS).
Also note that the last 3 years are usually more importiant, and he really hasn’t played much at either position.
TheBravestWay To Block A Decent Prospect - August 19, 2010
which
would bring his OBP and SLG down and he would end up below or right at .700 for an OPS.
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
There's no real reason to think that.
His career AVG is .274. So you expect him to hit nearly 50 points above his career average for the last 6 weeks? It could happen, but it is extremely unlikely.
Recent performance is not a good indicator of future performance, particularly when the sample size is very small.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
He's in the zone. Surrounded by friends, good people.
It aint Motown. This gives him the confidence, and the edge.
Watch. That is all.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 18, 2010
lol
Is that an ironic argument? Because I sure hope it is.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
It’s not always about numbers. People can factor into performance.
Hence, Lee wouldn’t go to the Angels. But wanted to come to Atlanta. There’s something to that. To this team.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 18, 2010
Lee came here for two reasons:
1) we’re in 1st place
2) Bobby Cox
That’s all. Has nothing to do with how nice the rest of the players are.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
He mentioned the players, specifically.
I’ll bet that Cubs dugout was a hoot.
jeez
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 18, 2010
he also said
that the Cubs werent as far out of it at the time they asked him about going to the Angels
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
OK
True. Make it 3 reasons
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
haha
Well, Big Z seems like a hoot.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
So
Even though he’s been hitting good this year, all of a sudden the last 6 weeks of the season (cause he’s a starter) he’s going to tank and regress to career norms?
Meh. This is depressing, I’m going to bed. I should know better than to come on here excited about the win and then find people still think that Glaus is a more viable option for the Braves than Infante.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
I don't think Glaus is better
but Omar does not have the skills of a .340 hitter, and it’s silly to think that he does.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
As a starter infante has a career line of .276/.320/.399 so take that how you will.
and IMO you are out of your mind to think that a healthy Glaus is less valuable than Infante in the lineup everyday.
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
this
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Def not a "this" post haha
If you actually look at Infante’s numbers, you will notice he has played pretty well since coming to Atlanta, albeit in Utility roles. and now with Lee, we don’t need Glaus (as long as he produces) to be a starter anymore, although it would be fun. We still have the best bench in the league, and have 2 guys near the top of the order that are very hard to get out.
MikeTrain - August 19, 2010
He hasn't been a consistent starter
In five years!
So, the Omar Infante on the Detriot Tigers in 2005 is the same Omar Infante on the Atlanta Braves in 2010? There’s no chance at all that he has improved, the players around him have improved, his coaches have improved, etc?
Get out of the dogmatic rut that everyone must play to the level of their career numbers.
sag969 - August 19, 2010
i was
taking in everytime he’s started a game. not just in 2005
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
I could easily live the rest of my life without seeing those words together in a baseball context.
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
What,
you have a problem with logic?
I love Omar, but come on, he’s not some sort of magical hit fairy who can conjure up singles whenever he pleases (much as we kid about “auto-single” and all that).
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
No
I don’t expect him to hit .340 the rest of the year. I expect him to hold the regular job and be a solid contributor.
I’m simply sick to death of smug, nearly dogmatic predictions that people can’t possibly ever keep up their level of success. This isn’t nuclear physics. There is a signifigant human element in the game and that throws off many of these bold predictions. If it didn’t, this would all be a little boring and pointless.
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
I’m not being smug. These are facts, not opinions. Some levels of performance are unsustainable. The human element is what creates these temporary periods of high performance, but it can’t make them be sustainable. I appreciate the over-performers as much as anyone, but I’m not naive enough to think they’ll continue indefinitely.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
Two things
No, I’m not calling you smug. Those weren’t your words that I quoted.
This is an ongoing phenomenon (I saw it applied a lot to Hudson earlier this season) and I’m sick of it. Dogmatically asserting something is certain isn’t the same thing as saying it’s possible.
Secondly, as I said, I don’t expect him to keep performing at this level, but I think he’ll be quite solid and won’t need to be replaced, which is also something that was asserted above (again, not by you.)
Sam Jethroe - August 19, 2010
If you don't want me to think you called me "smug"
don’t use that word to in replies to my posts in a way that makes it sound like it’s directed at me, okay?
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
I didn't quote you originally
“Due for a regression” was the initial tipping point and it’s indicative of the overly assured nature of some sabermetric analysis. I’m very skeptical of that aspect of it. No more, no less.
Sam Jethroe - August 19, 2010
I wonder
What life is like for you as a sports fan. Depressing I guess.
I imagine this kind of scenario often runs through your mind:
WOO! Player X is having a great month! Oh wait, he is hitting wayyyy above his career numbers. Well bah humbug. I guess I’m just going to have to wait for him to regress. Next time he gets a hit I’ll give a polite golf clap for his “human element,” but I know deep down inside that his numbers will go back down.
sag969 - August 19, 2010
on the flip side it must be depressing for you when you see a guy underperfoming and those of us who look deeper will release…holy crap he is due from a serious dose of good luck and player Y will be back to his usual mashing ways. (think Glaus in April and those of use who were convinced he would turn it around because his BABiP was unsustainably low)…our lives are no less depressing, just more realistic
Swo12bv - August 19, 2010
How so?
This is one of the best seasons I’ve ever enjoyed as a Braves fan. I was born in ‘89, so while I enjoyed and loved the huge success in the 90’s, I didn’t really comprehend or appreciate it.
After missing the playoffs for five years, its absolutely thrilling to see a Braves team that is so strong and holding off the team that has gone to the World Series the last two years. The only real major lows of the season so far were the 9 game losing streak and Chipper’s injury.
But, I go on here night after night, and its constant bitching about one thing or another. Perfect example is this thread. Braves have a nice walkoff win, but the only thing people can talk about is how Infante doesn’t deserve to be a regular starter. Like I said, depressing. The worst ones are you number crunching, stat obssesors. Every little thing must be analyzed, and if someone says something that doesn’t quite equal up, then they are wrong!
Still, its not like anything is going to change. I have a weird feeling that even if Braves win the WS, people will still be complaining about Alex Gonzalez and about how we won’t have Yunel for next year.
sag969 - August 19, 2010
my opinion
is that his solid contributions would be better in the 8 hole
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
Or, to use an analogy:
If you win the lottery three times in a year, that doesn’t mean you’re going to keep winning it next year.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
It's more like
Omar’s a guy who knows a lot of rock ‘n’ roll history and keeps winning meal coupons and movie tickets from his local radio station when they ask trivia questions..
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
Right.
And he just has some magical luck that allows him to always be the nth caller that gets to answer the question, and that the radio station doesn’t ban him from entering their contests after he’s won so many?
Every sustained period of over-performance takes luck, and luck runs out. That’s reality. Sorry if I ruined the surprise for you. Oh, and Santa’s not real, either.
Jacob Peterson - August 18, 2010
I don't know why you've so dramatically elevated the level of personal hostility here
But I know I’m not really enjoying this.
If you’re still working on the premise that I called you smug, please scroll up a bit.
Sam Jethroe - August 19, 2010
What exactly
was so hostile about what I said? Because I don’t see any hostility there at all. Certainly none is intended.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
I am not sure if this is correct but....
I heard somewhere that a player is at his peak btw the ages of 28 to 30. I think those times Infante was playing with the Tigers, he was a young guy in his early 20s still trying to figure out the game. Now that he is a 28, he probably has figure out the game better. His numbers have been getting better as the years go on. This all could be just hogwash but that is my educated guess.
romone_braves91 - August 18, 2010
This makes sense to me...
HEYJUDE - August 19, 2010

Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010

No reason to see how you can claim that.
MikeTrain - August 19, 2010
Infante

drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
Nah
Its going to be
Infante
Heyward
Prado
Lee/Hinkse/Glaus
McCann
Gonzalez
Melky/Ankiel CF
Diaz/Melky//Hinske LF
sag969 - August 18, 2010
i dont thin
he should be at the top though. Prado is a much better hitter imo
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
Oh I see
You put your best hitter in the leadoff spot? Good logic there!
sag969 - August 18, 2010
he’s a much better hitter than Infante. He however does not possess the power of a #3 hitter though. He would be perfect in the #2 spot but Melky could handle it as well.
drumzalicious - August 18, 2010
melky in the two hole? haha funny
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
MVP for Leadoff!!!!!!!!
GoBravesNY - August 18, 2010
YEAH
but I thought Hudson was going to play center and hit leadoff
Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Pretty rollercoaster game
Braves (offense) played awful for the most part. Hudson wasn’t his normal, dominate self but still only allowed two runs. Thanks to some horrible defense on the Nats, and a nice clutch hit by J-Hey, we won the game and saved face. We need to complete the sweep tomorrow and pray that the Giants that have been so good all year actually show up.
In an interesting sidenote, I know several people were talking about Infante’s chances at the batting title. I think someone figured out that he would need to average 5 AB the rest of the year to qualify, and still might miss the required number of appearances.
According to Don Sutton though, if a player does not meet the requirements (502 AB or so), they will take whatever at bats he’s missing, and factor them into the equation as if he had gone hitless in all those at bats. So for example, lets say Infante gets 475 at bats. MLB would then take those last 27 at bats, and count it as 0/27 and factor into his average.
So long story short, even if Infante doesn’t meet the AB minimum, he could still win the batting title. Still a long shot, but did not know about the little loophole. Thank you Don Sutton.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
Thanks for that one, Don
Learn somethin’ new every day
ryantex - August 18, 2010
Anyone else been stuck watching the Nationals broadcast?
As always, the first night isn’t all that terrible, but the true horror starts setting in on day #2. According to Carpenter, Heyward probably hit through a take sign for that game winner and will likely be disciplined by Bobby.
Oh, and Zimmerman wasn’t mad at the ump when he spiked his helmet and bat, he was mad at himself. It’s like listening to 8 year olds.
That was a too quick ejection, it should have just been a fine, but there’s no need to oversell the case. He was pissed about the second strike and that only multiplied when he struck out, hence the ant killing escapade with the hat ‘n’ bat.
Nice work from Huddy tonight. Keep fighting even w/o particularly good stuff. Positiveily Glavinesque. It’s a mark of true greatness.
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
Yeah
I’m in Virginia and have MLB TV, but when Braves play the nats its blacked out. So I opt to mute the TV and turn on the radio and listen to Don Sutton.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
Same situation
Except I’m using the Extra Innings package on DirecTV.
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
Yuck
My gf’s dad has that on cable – kinda lame. Way more expensive than MLB TV, and rarely has HD feeds. So watching it on a nice TV looks pretty lame. Also, you can’t always choose between home/away announcers.
The only upside to the extra innings is that its on your TV rather than PC, although there are ways to work around that.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
You know what’s weird? I have DirecTV Extra Innings, and literally EVERY game has home & away HD feeds, EXCEPT when the Braves are on Peachtree TV. That one is never HD, but I still watch it anyway to hear Smoltzie.
ryantex - August 18, 2010
Weird
Maybe DirecTV’s extra innings is different from the cable one.
On cable the home/away feeds are generally reserved for…wait for it…Yankees and Red Sox. HD feeds are also at a premium.
sag969 - August 18, 2010
I think it must be. I’ve got it on DirecTV as well, and it has all broadcasts.
dunnytwogloves - August 19, 2010
I’m with you. I’ve noticed that all year long too. It gets irritating having to watch the other teams broadcasts because I want to watch it in HD. We really have the fewest Braves broadcasts in HD of all the teams.
dunnytwogloves - August 19, 2010
I have access to both feeds
For most games. It’s been that way for several years, now.
They used to arbitrarily choose one or the other. I was praying and hoping very, very hard as the minutes wound down before a Braves-Marlins game.
Sam Jethroe - August 18, 2010
Me too except Cox Cable carries MASN in HD so I get to see all the Nats games…of course the only ones I watch are when they are playing the Braves!

I watched the Nats Xtra afterwards and Nats manager, Jim Riggleman, when talking about the Zimmerman ejection, called him Adam instead of Ryan 2 times. Rob Drivel and Carpenter didn’t bother to correct him. How can a manager get his 3 and 4 hitters mixed up like that?
pchaucer - August 19, 2010
Another nice win.
We hung in there against Livan, who is somehow getting it done this year, after I (and everyone else) though he was finished. Huddy didn’t have his best command, but he did keep us in the game. And if Chipper hadn’t been in the booth that inning, the final score might’ve been 2-0 and we wouldn’t have needed Heyward’s heroics.
Good to see Jason get that hit. He roped it. He’s been hitting a fair amount of line drives lately but seemingly none of them fell in until that one. Now let’s peel Lanana tomorrow and get the sweep!

Braves24 - August 18, 2010
Heyward comes through again with his fifth game-winning hit. While I like walkoff wins, I prefer a comfortable lead once in a while. Derek Lowe goes for the sweep tomorrow. We can only hope the Giants help out.
The weekend series against the Cubs looks like:
Jurrjens / Dempster
Hanson / Gorzelanny
Minor / Wells
and the Cubs have lost 9 of 10 at home, so the Braves might not have a difficult series. The Phillies will play the Nats and no, there will be no Halladay / Strasburg matchup.
TonyAlmeyda - August 18, 2010
don’t forget that the Cubs bats are weak now that Lee is on another team (I wonder what team is that). I am not sure about Soriano and Aramis (sp?) but I am going to say that they are swinging a cold bat at the moment.

Colvin is hitting .229 since the ASB and is 6 for 32 (.188) in his last 11 games.
TonyAlmeyda - August 19, 2010
Castro is going to be a freakin stud. Well as long as we keep him cool, I think we should take 2 out of 3. That and a plunking or six to Soriano will make me a happy man.
Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010
Is there a team in baseball that we can not take 2 of 3 from?
I am super confident in this 2010 Bravos. Never had this feeling before. It’s amazing.
romone_braves91 - August 19, 2010
We can beat anyone
especially at the Ted.
Jacob Peterson - August 19, 2010
I was worried about possibly facing the ChiSox since they seemed to man-handle us while we were there, but it seems like we caught them while they were red hot and have since come back down to earth.
Otherwise, no.
award6 - August 19, 2010
You must not have been around for '93-'99...
I was always shocked when Atlanta would lose during the Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz years.
What a great time….
jtw126 - August 19, 2010
With the way the Cubs have been struggling, why not a sweep? Wells is the only one that concerns me, but he’s lost his last four decisions.
TonyAlmeyda - August 19, 2010
Everytime I see Castro
I sigh and reminecse of the good times with Escobar. And how much better this team would have been if he didn’t have attitude problems and could figure out what was wrong with his swing.
bravesforever16 - August 19, 2010
Difference is...
Castro is 20 and Yunel was 24 when he made his debut.
SC is going to be a star for a long time…
jtw126 - August 19, 2010
until Hak Ju Lee takes his job in 2-3 years (he is supposed to be better but we’ll see)
Swo12bv - August 19, 2010
I'm gonna go out on a limb here...
and say today has the most comments in TC history.
Scott Coleman - August 18, 2010
I’m gonna say no
GoBravesNY - August 19, 2010
2,000+ for Lee, 2,000+ for the GT, plus the MLR and the fanposts…I’ll say it’s the biggest. Only day that could compete is the day we traded Esco. Or maybe the night we had 3,000 comments in the OT.
Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010
Dunno. Late last year we were averaging 5,000 in the GT alone. And last year’s trading deadline was epic
GoBravesNY - August 19, 2010
5,000?
LOL…try like 500.
Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010
Late last year, when we were making a playoff push? Oh. We have differerent meaning of “last year” I think. We had 500 before the games started. Today was definetly top 5 in history though
GoBravesNY - August 19, 2010
On August 18th, 2009, we had 809 comments in the GT

Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010
I’m talking September/October
GoBravesNY - August 19, 2010
You're wrong man
http://www.talkingchop.com/2009/9/18/1037033/open-thread-phillies-at-braves
September 18th’s had 660 or so. And the others did too. THe most comments we’ve ever had was 3,100 or so and that was earlier this year.
Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010
I don’t know. When we were still in it we had 500 pre game. Maybe its just overplayed in my mind
GoBravesNY - August 19, 2010
or
just FAIL
Braves24 - August 19, 2010
I’m going to agree with you. Too many things went down today that spark comments compared to other days throughout the year. Plus there is a fair amount of bandwagon fans joining the site while the team is hot. Just saying.
romone_braves91 - August 19, 2010
gondeee tweeted earlier in the day that were on course to break the record.
I haven’t heard if we did or not, but if we didn’t we had to be close.
HEYJUDE - August 19, 2010
I've said it before but I'll say it again
This place is going to blow up when the playoffs roll around. I can’t wait!!!
BravesDawg16 - August 19, 2010
We should
sign Micah Owings for a PH bat in the post season.
drumzalicious - August 19, 2010
Why?
we have the best bench in baseball.
Almost as good as your claim that Melky should play #2 and Infante the #8
MikeTrain - August 19, 2010
first off
i was being sarcastic.
and 2nd. Infante should not be starting everyday or hitting lead off
drumzalicious - August 20, 2010
I like this vibe that I have had since yesterday…
justincredubil02 - August 19, 2010
You just waking up sunshine?
Scott Coleman - August 19, 2010 via mobile
Yup. I got a solid 6.
justincredubil02 - August 19, 2010
Braves winning is like
A fat man getting his first twinkie of the day…ohhh so good!!
heyward4prez - August 19, 2010
Im fat
but I hate twinkies….so the correlation is a bad one…..for me anyway
KJDH2154 - August 19, 2010
Time for me to add...
Something that completely has been said before on this very page…
1. Great win for the Braves – I never thought for a moment we would lose this game. We are so good late that it’s to be expected.
2. Heyward: I loved his last at bat. Great approach, as he didn’t try to hit a walk-off homer…Nice job, J-Hey.
3. Wags: Looked filthy. I like him getting a bit of rest lately.
4. Glaus: The more I think about it, the more I commend his attitude regarding the Lee trade. Way to be a team player, Troy! I can’t think of any former Braves who would balk at going to the minors to work things out…Oh wait.
Jman781 - August 19, 2010
from the way things went down i bet money Wren talked to Glaus before going after Lee. to see if Glaus would go play 3B.
but that pure speculation (100% organic)
