Gwinnett 4, Durham 2, Game 1
In his last 3 games Wes Timmons has gone 5-10 with a double and 2 walks. Scott Diamond had too many walks tonight, and couldn't make it out of the 5th inning, but he continued his stretch of allowing 1 earned run or less in his last 5 starts. In 55 innings between Mississippi and Gwinnett, Steve Marek has a 0.98 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, 10.3 K/9, and 11 saves.
Gwinnett 2, Durham 6, Game 2
Troy Glaus was 0-3 with a walk tonight. Freddie Freeman and Barbaro Canizares were 5-11 with 2 doubles, a homer, 3 RBI, and a walk tonight. Tim Gustafson had been pitching well for Mississippi and in his first game for Gwinnett since June 26th he took the loss, but pitched well, allowing just 2 earned in 5 innings.
Mississippi 4, Montgomery 5
In his last 10 games, Mauro Gomez has gone 16-36 with 5 doubles, 2 homers, 9 RBI, and 5 walks. Richard Sullivan took the loss tonight, allowing 3 earned runs in 3 innings, and it was his first poor performance in a while, as he had allowed just 1 earned run in his last 15 innings. Erik Cordier pitched a perfect 9th inning, striking out all 3 batters he faced. It was his first true relief appearance of the year, pitching in relief on 2 other occasions when a rehabbing Chris Resop started.
Myrtle Beach 5, Potomac 7
Brett Oberholtzer fanned 12 P-Nats over 5 innings and he has a 2.25 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in his last 4 starts. Myke Jones had a perfect night at the plate, reaching all 4 times he came up. Cody Johnson homered, and, of course, struck out.
Rome 5, Augusta 6
Phil Gosselin continues to hit well, going 5-13 with a double, a homer, and 4 RBI in his last 3 games. Matt Weaver has been outstanding lately, hitting .375 with a .980 OPS in his last 10 games. Ryan Weber gave up a lot of hits, but he didn't walk anyone, and that's been a strength of his all season, as he's averaging just 1 walk every 9 innings.
Danville 9, Bluefield 2
After allowing 6 earned runs in 4 innings his last time out, Ronan Pacheco rebounded by only allowing 1 earned in 6 innings tonight, striking out 7 in the process. Joey Terdoslavich extended his hitting streak to 5 games, going 9-21 with 2 homers and 7 RBI in that span. In his last 3 games, Ryan Delgado has gone 6-13 with 3 doubles, a homer, and 4 RBI.
Kyle Rose' rehab is going well, as he raps out a few more hits. Matt Lipka hasn't been demolishing the ball like he was at earlier points in the season, but he's still been successful, extending his hitting streak to 6 games, going 7-25 with 2 walks and 3 stolen bases in that span.
DSL Braves 1, DSL Blue Jays 0
17 year old Panamanian Abraham Espinosa had another fantastic start, shutting down the Jays over 7 innings. For the year the 6'1", 175 pound righty has a 1.37 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP in 59 innings. 20 year old lefty Elvin Garcia has been great as well, and he hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 9 innings, covering 4 appearances.

Anybody heard anything about Alvord or Sabol signing? It would be nice if we could get them, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Especially Alvord…
mj10catchit10 - August 15, 2010
Not much
My guess is they’re not going to sign either. Scouts have been at Sabol’s summer league games though. Alvord is listed on the Auburn roster although he hasn’t started class yet. The Braves have until Wed. to make a decision on both guys but my money(and the Braves’ for that matter lol) is they’ll sign neither.
Jay212033 - August 15, 2010
They only have until Monday at 11pm, that’s the deadline.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
Brings out dead horse. Lays it in the middle of the thread *
BRING UP FREEMAN
Seriously, screw the clock. Screw September callups. He is hotter than the sun right now and if he could bring half of that up he will be a shot in the arm for this anemic offense.

Chopaholic - August 15, 2010
i agree bring him up, we need a spark
Brandonba - August 15, 2010
Yeah, it sucks being in first place by only 2-3 games. How can we ever expect to go to the post season with only a 2-3 game division lead in August?
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
I’m not sure, but we were up like 7 games just a few weeks ago. Things do change.
Scott Coleman - August 15, 2010 via mobile
And we were up 1.5 games last week. Things DO change.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Yeah, half a game is a big difference.
Scott Coleman - August 15, 2010 via mobile
When did
“Eh…close enough…” become our organizational ethos?
Atlanta Braves 67 49
Philadelphia Phillies 65 51
San Diego Padres 68 47
San Francisco Giants 67 51
St. Louis Cardinals 65 50
Cincinnati Reds 66 51
We’re in good shape but standing pat now is a little like playing blackjack and sticking on 12.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
being in 1st is not “close enough”. It is quite satisfactory.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Not having the best posible roster
And thinking you can muddle through anyway is a dictionary definition of “close enough.”
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
Some folks have brought up the valid argument that you can’t expect a 20 year old to just have immediate success in the Majors. I counter that by pointing out that this 20 year old has been in AAA all year, and he’s been outstanding. And never mind his bat, his defense is outstanding. Right there he’d be a major improvement. Even if he hit the same as Glaus has for the last month, he’d still be an upgrade just because of his defense.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
This.
I said on August 1st that Troy had 2 weeks to turn it around. All he’s done is continue to make outs and play below average defense.
Ita time for Freddie.
Scott Coleman - August 15, 2010 via mobile
Well, Mr. Wren...
Why don’t you call him up then?
J-Turn14 - August 15, 2010
I say we keep Freeman in AAA until September 1st. Right now we need someone who can play the other 3 infield positions, until Prado is back and healthy. Since 2 of our starting pitchers are primarily ground ball out types, we can’t afford to lose one of the bench players, such as Hernandez or Hicks, even though their offense is not that good.
DawgB - August 15, 2010
The more things change, the more they stay the same…I could have sworn I read this same post back in April.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
In April it was a lot less logical to bring Freeman up. At this point in the year not only is Freeman a viable option, but so is Canizares. Glaus isn’t getting unlucky, he’s just old and slow.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
3 months really ages guys these days.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
It can yes...
when you play as often as they do and get dings that don’t heal.
Mr. Sanchez - August 15, 2010
Justin
Man you really can’t see how Glaus is hurting this team now? Dude can barely run and is a freakin statue over at 1st. Every time he comes up to bat I seriously cringe watching him swing. Like CB and others have said Freeman could at the very least put up the same numbers hitting wise that Glaus is putting up but more importantly he’ll play far better defense.
Jay212033 - August 15, 2010
I see how Glaus is in a slump – a slump that he has looked to started to awaken from.
But yeah, you guys are probably right. June was the wall. Either he forgot how to hit, or his body just aged dramatically once the calendar changed.
Just give the man a week off or so, let him rest up. He will be back to mashing in no time.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Well the only way for hime to rest up is to put him on the DL...
Which would, in turn, mean calling up Freddie Freeman… So which side are you on?
J-Turn14 - August 15, 2010
Wait, either a guy starts or he is on the DL?
You can rest someone without putting them on the DL. It’s called putting him on the bench and using him as a PH.
justincredubil02 - August 16, 2010
Exactly! That’s what I’ve been advocating.
We have two unproductive roster spots (Hernandez and Hicks) We need more viable options. Freeman would give us another arrow in the quiver. I don’t want to present him with the job and DFA Troy. I want Troy to get some r&r and for Freeman to be added to the mix in the meantime.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
The problem with that is that Freeman would only be called up for a week or so, OR he would be benched when Troy is fresh again. I’d rather just have him in AAA continuing to get better in a steady environment.
justincredubil02 - August 16, 2010
There is a time-tested phenomenon where sluggers like Glaus tend to all of the sudden fall off the map and seem to completely lose their ability.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
I didn’t realize Canizares hit lefties so well (of course, he’s hitting everything well now). He should def. get a chance this year..
bwellnjonesco - August 15, 2010
This. There are some valid arguments to be made against Freddie, but Barbaro is a 30 year old in his fourth year of AAA who seems to be getting even better as the year goes on.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
really though
canizares would be almost BETTER than freddie as i see it. Freddie can continue to develop, and canizares could possibly be a GREAT fill in for Glaus or AT LEAST bench bat, because of not being a “prospect” and all.
Cody Arrington - August 15, 2010
And you combine Freeman's potential...
with the likely upgrade in a September Glaus if you actually let his legs get healed up or rested.
Mr. Sanchez - August 15, 2010
Not that I’m against calling up Freeman, but what are the chances that Bobby would want to replace a veteran with a rookie? The only chance might be for Canizares or Hinske to split time with Glaus for rest. Doesn’t seem like the Braves’/Bobby’s MO to replace a vet during the season, regardless of their struggles, unless of course that vet gets injured.
award6 - August 15, 2010
thank you
im sick of lookin at 2-3 or 4-5 or 1-3 with HR, 2B, and RBI always beside of it and watchin troy hobble around the field. I mean,I like Troy’s sweet walk off stroke, but when he has weak sticks for legs, hes incapable of it, and Freddie Freeman looks more than capable. Bring him to Turner!
Cody Arrington - August 15, 2010
THANK YOU!
don’t know how you do it, middle of the night, every night…
you have greatly added to my enjoyment of following the Braves…i am not looking forward to the end of the ML season!
most grateful.
blazon - August 15, 2010
Young or not
I don’t care if Freddie is 20 he can produce alot better offensively and defensively than glaus. If they are waitin til September to call him up and let him hit it might be to late. We are 2 games up and the phills are getting healthier everyday we need offense Now not in 2 weeks. And FF may not give us a huge difference but he could spark the lineup and at least give us some good defense.
heyward4prez - August 15, 2010 via mobile
For a team on pretty strict budget (it seems), I’m reaaly surprised they keep Glaus out there raking in the incentive $$.
bighop - August 15, 2010
Free Freddie Freeman
Troy is at 452 PA’s, he just got another $350,000. By Sept 1, another $350,000 for 500 PA’s. Anybody ever wondered how having Freeman on the team might affect Heyward? Might fire him up enough to make a difference.
bighop - August 15, 2010
Phillies are bringing back Utley and Howard shortly, Braves counter with Prado and Freeman. Advantage Phillies, but a bigger advantage for the Phils if we keep carting Glaus out there.
bighop - August 15, 2010
$350K. Really? You are going to complain about spending less than the league minimum on a proven vet?
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
They would spend less than that on Freeman or Canizares for the rest of the year. And being a proven vet doesn’t matter when you don’t produce. Jermaine Dye is a proven vet but nobody’s signed him this year.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
That isn’t the point. We are complaining about spending a paltry $350K out of a $90-ish MILLION dollar budget…really???
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Glaus contract has $2.25M in incentive bonuses. You can play that off as chump change all you want, it just makes you look ill-informed.
bighop - August 15, 2010
And how much of that is already paid out?
How much is remaining that is possible to attain?
And who looks like they are trying to think of anything they can to complain about regarding Troy Glaus being our 1B?
Seriously, even at $2.25M, that is chump change in a $90+M budget.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
He’s at 452 PA’s…
He’s been paid $1.75M for the year
$250,000 for 100 days on the 25 man roster
$350,000 for 400 PA’s and $350,000 for 450 PA’s
Bonuses remaining are
$350,000 at 500 PA’s, $400,000 at 550 PA’s, $550,000 at 600 PA’s
I’m not trying to think of reasons to complain about Glaus, I was happy we got him, happy with him in ST, argued SSS in April when he was getting roasted here. But he looks injured. We need offense and his knees no longer allow him to contribute to that need. We have better, cheaper options available. We have room on the 40 man roster. I’d like to see more at 1st base than we currently have.
bighop - August 15, 2010
Comparatively maybe...
but I’m sure they’d rather keep the couple hundred grand regardless of the overall budget.
Mr. Sanchez - August 15, 2010
He will basically be getting those bonuses every 2-3 weeks, and the bonuses get bigger and bigger. He was offered the incentives if he could produce, he is not producing but is still getting the bonuses. You can beat your dead horse all you want, I think the Braves have better options in mid August than Glaus. I respect his career, I respect his effort. I appreciate what he did 2 months ago. But I don’t think $$ should be flushed down the drain on a player who’s knees have seen such tremendously better days.
bighop - August 15, 2010
wes timmons avg
It says .259 in this post. Its gotta be .295 right?
Alex H - August 15, 2010 via mobile
Yes, .295, just mistyped it.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
How close is Yasser Gomez? He’s lighting Mississip up, albeit via singles, but it looks like he can do exactly what we expected..
bwellnjonesco - August 15, 2010
Gomez
I wouldn’t mind a singles, doubles type hitter w/ a high OBP and doesn’t K much leading off or hitting 2nd and plays plus defense in CF.
Jay212033 - August 15, 2010
you just described wes timmons
But at 3b where we need someone even more
Alex H - August 15, 2010 via mobile
Yeah
I’d also like that in CF also cause Ankiel/Cabrera/McLouth ain’t cuttin it! Cabrera is a decent 4th OF but the other two not so much.
Jay212033 - August 15, 2010
Where is Jordan Schafer?
We need a CF after this year. So who’s it gonna be as there’s absolutely no one available in free agency or trade market. Maybe David Dejesus but that’s about it.
Jaymin Patel - August 15, 2010
schafer was demoted to AA b/c he was pretty bad at AAA...
and i think he may have gotten injured again (????)
SouthernPanther - August 15, 2010
Anyone know what happened with Beachy? It looks like he’s back in AA with Miss. Any particular reason for that?
BravesFan - August 15, 2010
I think it was just a paper move. They replaced him with Gustafson who pitched the second game of the doubleheader, my guess is before Beachy’s next turn in the rotation he comes back and Gustafson goes down.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
In fact this already happened.
cbwilk - August 15, 2010
Any chance Matt Young is called up.....
…..when rosters expand? Good speed, good OBP skills, good defense in center = exactly what this team needs.
As for Freeman, I’m thrilled about his progress. Even if he stays down all year, this was the season where he had to prove he was ready for the bigs and he more than delivered, at least so far. Really looking forward to seeing him play, and hopefully that’s in 2010…..
Undocorkscrew - August 15, 2010
Took in the Pelicans game last night with RH. Sitting directly behind the bullpen made for some humorous moments. RH made a great comment after the game as well…the boxscore doesn’t tell you the whole story, as Paul Clemens was acting like LeBron James out in the bullpen and then proceeded to get shelled when he actually entered the game, sheepishly returning to the get his jacket afterwards. To his credit, he was screwed out of two outs by blown umpire calls…and a defensive error didn’t help either.
Smoltz's Beard - August 15, 2010
Acting like lebron james? as in he was being a premadonna or he was shooting baskets? or did he schedule a 1 hour long press conference before his appearance to announce that he was going to be in the ballgame soon.
yondaime4 - August 15, 2010
Mauro Gomez > Troy Glaus?
