In a game between two teams who can't seem to get a clutch hit, it's kind of fitting that all 3 runs scored on outs. The Dodgers got on the board first, but it wasn't exactly a highlight-reel play: Matt Kemp hit into a double-play with runners on the corners and no outs in the fourth inning. It sure wasn't a clutch hit, but it did produce an important run.
That would be the only run that Braves starter Derek Lowe would give up in his six innings of work. Lowe gave up 10 hits and walked 1 man (intentionally), which meant he was constantly pitching with runners on base. He seemed to thrive under that pressure though--he induced two double-plays and struck out several batters in key spots (he finished with 4 Ks). His best job of pitching out of a jam came in the fifth inning, when he had runners on second and third with no outs. He struck out Ryan Theriot, and after the intentional walk, got James Loney to ground into an easy double play to end the inning.
Lowe's sinker was working all night, as he induced 16 ground balls out of 21 balls in play (76%). He had some bad luck, though, as many of the hits off of him were just bleeders that found a hole. He pitched well enough to win the game, for sure, but as we've all been very aware lately, you can't get a win if your team won't score for you.
The Dodgers added another run off of Everyday Jonny Venters in the 7th inning on an Andre Ethier sacrifice fly. Kyle Farnsworth and Takashi Saito looked great in the 8th and 9th, respectively, each striking out 2 Dodgers in perfect innings.
Ted Lilly was great all night for the Dodgers; he kept the Braves off balance masterfully, giving up no runs and only 5 baserunners (3 hits and 2 walks) in his 6 innings of work. He weirdly (for him) got more ground balls than fly balls (7 to 5), and benefitted from some good luck (Melky Cabrera, Jason Heyward, and Alex Gonzalez all smoked balls off of Lilly that ended up being caught), but he pitched very well, too. He struck out four.
Down 2-0 late, the Braves did finally muster a bit of a comeback once LIlly left the game. In the seventh against Kenley Jansen, Matt Diaz led off with a walk. One out later, Melky Cabrera smoked a double down the left-field line to put runners on second and third. It was the Braves' first hit with a runner on base in the series (in more than 20 opportunities). That brought up David Ross, who hit a grounder to third to score Diaz and cut the lead to 2-1.
Unfortunately, the Braves went 1-2-3 in both the 8th and 9th (off of Octavio Dotel and newly minted closer Hong-Chih Kuo), and that was the ballgame. Braves lose 2-1.
It was really too bad. In addition to wasting another excellent pitching performance, the Braves disappointed a sellout crowd of more than 49,000 folks, the second-largest crowd of the season. And, of course, the Phillies won behind Roy Halladay, so our division lead is back to 2 games.
Oh well. We've got Jair Jurrjens going tomorrow afternoon against Vicente Padilla. Maybe we can break out some offense against Padilla.

MVP
Ted Lilly-- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 0.365 WPA
Honorable Mention
Octavio Dotel-- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.205 WPA
Hong-Chih Kuo-- 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.180 WPA
Scott Podsednik-- 3/5, R, CS, 2 K, 0.084 WPA
LVP
I hate to say it, but it's the Raw Dog (Brooks Conrad)-- 0/4, 2 K, -0.167 WPA
MVPs in a Losing Effort
Derek Lowe-- 6 IP, 10 H, 1 R, 1 BB (1 IBB), 4 K, 16/21 GB (76%), 0.153 WPA
Melky Cabrera-- 1/3, 2B, 0.103 WPA
Omar Infante-- 2/4, SB, K, 0.036 WPA
Stat of the Game
After two games of this series, neither team has driven in a runner on base with a hit. The 4 runs have scored on a solo homer, a double play, a sacrifice fly, and a groundout. Yay offense.
Clutch Play
Melky's double to set up the Braves' only run (0.150 WPA)... Fitting that the most clutch play in this game didn't even score a run.
Unclutch Play
Loney grounding into an inning-ending, bases-loaded double play (-0.147 WPA)

What exactly does Bobby expect from GLoss in the clean-up spot? ......RBIs?
Granted he took a walk, and it was a team loss…….but Omar and Conrad can’t win them all for us.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 14, 2010
I still think Glaus needs to sit for at least a week, He’s hurting are line up!!!
cali viking - August 14, 2010
Let him get his incentives, and cut him loose. Thanks so much. But that offensive hole at 1st is killing us softly. It’s not May 107th.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 14, 2010
Glaus won’t get too many RBI opportunities with Gonzalez batting in front of him – and that is not to be interpreted as Gonzalez getting all the RBIs.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
this offense
Is a joke… alex gonzalez batting 3rd and glaus 4th.
UltimaParadox - August 14, 2010 via mobile
Stop hitting Gonzalez third!!
This offense needs to wake up with Utley and Howard returning soon. A two-game lead with this kind of offensive output will not last very long. The pitching can only do so much.
TonyAlmeyda - August 14, 2010
I'm waiting
For someone to blame this loss on Lowe.
Haha, all kidding aside – that was sad stuff tonight. Crazy thing is there were plenty of hard hit balls – they were just straight to the outfielders or the Dodgers (I’m looking at you Posednik) made some fantastic plays.
sag969 - August 14, 2010
One of those games that you end up asking yourself, “why did I even watch that?”
Scott Coleman - August 14, 2010 via mobile
Yea
And of course it has to be one of the very few games I go to. Why did Lowe have to pitch tonight?
Braves24 - August 14, 2010 via mobile
Are you kidding?
Lowe only gave up one run. This loss was on our offense not Lowe, imo.
HEYJUDE - August 15, 2010
I’ll bet even Mac was thinking, “Why the hell am I not in the clean-up spot?”
Mac had an off-night, but that might have messed with him a tad.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Calm down
All I said was why did Lowe have to pitch the night I go to the game? I thought he pitched good but he gave up a lot of hits. He didn’t lose the game and I agree with you about the offense.
Braves24 - August 15, 2010 via mobile
Vicente Padilla looks like a toad that was cruelly set on fire and put out with an icepick.

I hate split loyalties
why did Torre have to put Kuo in the closer’s spot starting this series?
hawves - August 14, 2010
i really hate ESPN
yesterday, RA Dickey pitched an AL no hitter and they only mention it, but tonight Phillies won they show it in their frontpage.
joshant - August 14, 2010
lol. ESPN roots for the Phillies, man.
I wouldn’t even let it bother me. In the collective mind of ESPN, outside of the AL East, the only other team worth mentioning is the Thillies.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Has it always been like this, or only since 2007?
Regardless, I’m so glad MLB Network exists now.

FitzFan - August 15, 2010
Jurrjens knows he's not going to get any run support. I know that would mess with me.
Hopefully, with any luck, the Braves and Mets both win tomorrow.
Hell, let Chipper replace Pendleton for the rest of the season. Could it be any worse? Not really.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 14, 2010
Enough with the TP bashing
It’s really silly. You’re verging on self parody now.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
dude, all im saying is, Could we really be doing any worse with Chip as the batting coach?
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
From comments on previous posts...
I think the general consensus is that it is the batter’s fault if he doesn’t hit the ball. I really don’t know what the batting coach actually does. If a batting coach cannot be blamed when a team hits poorly, then he can’t get praise when the team hits well. Many have argued in the past, that TP would tell the Braves all the right things to do and work with them on all phases of the game, but when the batters step to the plate all heck breaks loose.
I generally disagree with the above statement, as what is the point of a hitting coach unless he does have an effect on the team’s performance at the plate? If we can only blame the batters, then, no, we couldn’t do worse or better with Chipper Jones or, heck, even myself as batting coach.
I will say this. I don’t have a clue what TP does or does not do/say with the batters, and, yes, to some extent he is limited by the players he has at his disposal. A team of 9 Albert Pujolses would kill a team of 9 Rick Ankiels. It’s a fact. I just have a hard time figuring out why so many of our batters go into long funks at the plate, beyond what I consider a mere slump (Glaus, McLouth, Yunel at the beginning of the year, Hinske, etc.) Yes, our scoring is okay, but our BA with RISP is absolutely abysmal. There has to be SOMETHING someone can do (including TP). And for the TP apologists, why can he never be questioned? Why can we get onto Gonzalez or Ankiel or Glaus or Frency or Yunel or Kelly Johnson or whoever is struggling at the plate, but once some even mentions TP in a negative light, people get testy? Is he absolved of all criticism due to his long tenure with the Braves?
I am not calling for TP’s job, but, like with anyone who works, he has to learn to make adjustments. Maybe he is. If that is the case, maybe this lineup simply is not that good. God, I want Prado back in the worst way!
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
Let me also qualify the above...
By saying that I am (a) frustrated with the injuries/offense of late, (b) cranky because I only got 2.5 hours of sleep last night, and (c ) crankier because I have to work during the game today. Thus, I am venting more than I normally would.
I do agree with what I said above, but it probably appears a bit snarky to the rest of y’all…I am still bummed about Chipper!
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
When Joe Simpson is constantly talking about making adjustments (that none of our guys are making)
this is the batting coach’s job: to lay out the game plan for that particular game.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Lowe got Kawakami’d tonight. No run support on top of a rather good performance.
BullManUGA - August 15, 2010
By the time it finally hits Bobby that he’s pumping a dry well at first, it might be too late.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
I just can’t believe the Braves are going to pay Glaus all of his incentive $$. It sure looks and sounds like they have no intention to sit and rest him.
bighop - August 15, 2010
I just don’t get it. Why not sit him for a week.? When Marteeeny comes back they need to DL him.
FitzFan - August 15, 2010
Glaus deserves the incentive $ IMO. No way were in 1st without his hot May. With that being said, it’s time to DL him, give him a FEW WEEKS off, and give Freeman the nod. Freeman does well, tag team him with Glaus; does bad you just send him back down.
maizebaseball10 - August 15, 2010 via mobile
Braves offense should stop wasting great pitcher performance, just look this numbers
Starting Pitchers numbers After ASG
They are combined for:
|GS 28|— |177 1/3 IP|— |ERA 2.94|— |WHIP 1.133|— |SO/BB 129/44|— |HR 12|— |Record 10-6|
Braves Record 15-13
Still no impresive. Just look these numbers on August
They are combined for this awesome stats:
|GS 13|— |71 IP|— |ERA 1.52|— |WHIP 0.930|— |SO/BB 44/14|— |HR 0|— |Record 2-2|
Braves Record 8-4
Awesome?
If this offense can get some hits with RISP or men on bases, we can win easily the NL East
joshant - August 15, 2010
Now let see the Braves offense
Since ASG. Braves 15-13
|AVG. 239 (229-958)|—|116 R(4.14 per game|— |RISP. 199(48-241)|— |LOB 218 (7.75 per game)|
During August. Braves 8-5
|AVG. 211 (89-442)|— |47 R (3.62 per game)|— |RISP. 178 (19-107)|— |LOB 88 (6.77 per game)|
joshant - August 15, 2010
But, we are showing some power
Braves are leading NL (T-Brewers) (7th overall) in HR after ASG with 32
Braves are 2nd (4 overall) in HR during August with 17
joshant - August 15, 2010
BTW FF tonight
3-6 2B HR 2R 2RBI 2SO AVG. 312
joshant - August 15, 2010
Crazy thing is...
With all the pessimism around here, I almost forgot we were in first place. AND still winning games.
aRC - August 15, 2010 via mobile
It's not pessemism
It’s reality.
I think we would have been okay with Chipper stil around but his loss and Prado’s absence (and Cox’s stubborness/immunity to understanding the passage of time) is really holding us back now.
All of this wouldn’t sting so much if the lead was where it should be (4 games, with Otis Davidson not in the mix for that game in Miami and if the Dodgers bullpen had held a 7 fucking run lead for 6 outs.)
I know there are some people in full on panic mode but most of us are just concerned. And repeating “Remain calm, all is well!” like Kevin Bacon isn’t going to do any good if this offense doesn’t get some help.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
Thats not the point. It almost seems as if missing the playoffs is a forgone conclusion to some. The reality is, we’ve suffered through terrible stretches, months even, injuries to integral pieces, and and what seems to be gross mismanagement all around, and yet (which may not be the word im looking for) we are two games up in our division.
Dont get me wrong, I can see the less appealing outcome thorugh all the homerism. However, I dont believe we’ve been playing over our heads. I, wholeheartedly, believe that the atlanta braves are one of the three best teams in the NL. Sure, we’re not stacked like the yankees or phils, but how many teams are? Our pitching staff, bullpen, and lineup speaks for itself… and that is as balanced of a team as youre going to find.
We are right where we are suppposed to be, regardless of any other team. And it just so happens that is 2 games up in the NL east in first place. Until, that isnt ithe case any longer, I kindly ask that some posters put the skirt back in the closet and grab some rally caps.
This mainly stems from me living in Philly for the last 8 years. And as much as I hate to say it, some Braves cats on here are starting to remind me of those fairweather fans.
aRC - August 15, 2010
I agree with the biggest part of the first two paragraphs
I just don’t want to try it with only what we have now. Martin’s return is going to help but Chip’s sudden absence is a real void. We need a little help.
Realistically, it’s almost certainly going to shake out as six teams looking for four spots. I just don’t want to be left standing in the rain because Wren didn’t want to hurt Troy Glaus’ feelings.
Or Bobby Cox’s, for that matter.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
Ted Lilly got the W. That hurts more than anything.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
THAT'S the truth
I hate that Jeff Gordon-looking twerp.
Sam Jethroe - August 15, 2010
Troy has one bad game
and the pitch forks are back out.
I think the real question about this offense is why is Gonzalez hitting 3rd?
drumzalicious - August 15, 2010
The only other option until Prado comes back is Mac and I dont see that happening anytime soon.
aRC - August 15, 2010
Not at all.
Melky would be a much better #3 than Gonzalez. Hell, Hudson would be too.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
If it were only...
one bad game,I would agree.Heck,a bad week or month, might be tolerable.Since his 2 HR game back on June 13th, Glaus is hitting .170,with 2 HRs and 16 RBIs covering almost 50 games. Are we sure Freeman cannot produce even that as a part timer over the remainder of the season?
mikie baseball - August 15, 2010
I kind agree with @mikie baseball...
Dude, what version of Troy Glaus have you been watching for the last couple of months?
Somehow, unless we figure something out VERY quickly, the loss of Chipper might prove to be a bigger deal than we expected…At a minimum, he prevented the horrid line-ups Bobby’s been using of late…
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
When Prado comes back, I think the Braves should platoon Glaus and Freeman at first. I was at the game Friday night and was encouraged to see the double that Glaus hit to right center. However, it is obvious to everyone that Glaus is too banged up to play everyday. I like Glaus as a player because I know he is playing hard every night. I just think the best thing for Glaus and the Braves would be to rest him as much as possible and hope that helps him speed up his bat.
JimH - August 15, 2010
bc he has more homers than anyone on the team
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Starting Pitching
The good news to me is that we continue to have starting pitchers that give us a chance to win every night. And despite the lack of clutch hitting the team is still playing over .500 baseball since the allstar break. The bats are bound to heat up again and when they do the team should be able to win a lot of games down the stretch as long as we have pitching that is this solid.
JimH - August 15, 2010
I love how a flukey 1st half makes Gonzalez a 3 hitter now.
If he is our 3 hitter from here on out, we are not going to make the playoffs. It’s really that simple.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Amen
Look at his career avgs he is definetly no 3 hitter but until prado comes back we jus don have many options and out lineup is well to put it nicely average at best.
heyward4prez - August 15, 2010 via mobile
We have 10-12 better options for the 3 hole than Gonzalez. In other words, every player on the team that is not a pitcher (with a few exceptions for pitchers) are better hitters than Gonzalez.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
I wouldn't got that far...
But we all know you have a huge man-crush on Sea Bass. I do agree that he should not hit third…If Heyward was being groomed to be the 3rd hitter, Bobby is doing a poor job of grooming him…
If it were me, until Prado comes back, I bat Infante, Melky/Diaz, Heyward…
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
OK
I don’t think Gonzo should hit 3rd, either, but this is just insane. You’d really rather hit Brandon Hicks third than Gonzalez? That’s just dumb, justin.
Jacob Peterson - August 15, 2010
Well, yes, the post had a bit of hyperbole in it.
But, the point remains that Gonzalez is one of the worst hitters on the team, and Brandon Hicks may be the only position player who is worse.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
At least Gonzo hits pop-ups and foul balls. GLoss just swings through em. But Gonzo is the problem?
You can’t see the forest for the trees.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Troy Glaus: .240 .347 .402 .749
Alex Gonzalez: .240 .315 .406 .721
And Troy is in a bad slump, and Alex is having a career year. What trees are you looking at?
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Gonzo has hit more homers than anyone else on our team, for the year.
(given the available options) if this doesn’t warrant batting 3rd, I’m not sure what does.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
He also has one of the lowest OBPs on our team for the year, for his career, whatever.
If that doesn’t constitute being hit lower in the lineup (like 8th) I don’t know what does.
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
But I agree...
Neither should hit above 6th…Ever.
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
Not getting into a debate...
For both aren’t hitting terribly well, but what are the stats recently?
Well, in the last 28 days:
Gonzo: .241/.304/.726 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs
Glaus: .162/.267/.511 with 1 HR and 6 RBIs
Hmmm…Dude, it’s not even close.
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
you won’t change his mind. he’s in lock-down-mode
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Yeah, I am the one in denial about Gonzalez…
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Enlighten us. What should the line-up be, Mustafa?
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Since you asked
Infante
Cabrera
Heyward
Glaus
McCann
Diaz
Conrad
Gonzalez
When Prado comes back:
Prado
Infante
Heyward
Glaus
McCann
Cabrera
Diaz
Gonzalez
justincredubil02 - August 15, 2010
Heyward is out.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
So you were talking about today specifically?
Fine:
Infante
Cabrera
Diaz
Glaus
McCann
Hinske
Conrad
Gonzalez
justincredubil02 - August 16, 2010
Braves Lineup today. WTF
1. Infante 2B,
2. Ankiel CF,
3. Gonzalez SS,
4. McCann C,
5. Glaus 1B,
6. Hinske LF,
7. Conrad 3B,
8. Cabrera RF,
9. Jurrjens
joshant - August 15, 2010
As sad as this may sound, at least Cabrera is in there.
If Heyward is hurt again, maybe he really is 35.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
but why not put Cabrera in the second spot instead Ankiel
joshant - August 15, 2010
bc if anything goes down and the 8th hitter comes up, i would rather it be Melky than Ankiel.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Probably you´re right because we´ve had a lot of RBI situation in the bottom of the lineup
joshant - August 15, 2010
lol. well……
Glaus strikes out.
Hinske singles.
Conrad bunts him over.
I would much rather have Melky in this situation.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
or
Cabrera double
JJ bunt
Infante auto-single
Ankiel Auto-K
Probably end of the inning
or
BMac single
Glaus K
Hinske single
Conrad BB
Melky at bat
joshant - August 15, 2010
Is Heyward hurt?
I am merely asking a question, but it seems that Heyward has had an injury plagued career. I recall him being hurt a lot last season, too (honestly don’t know much before that). I hope this is just an anomaly and not a sign of things to come.
But just look at that lineup. Is that the lineup of a WS contender? Goodness, no. We need Prado and Heyward healthy and Glaus hitting again. Fast.
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
Merely asking a question here, as well….
You really think Glaus has anything left in the tank?
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
Yes.
I actually do. If he were to go on the DL and rest for a few weeks, I think he would come back swinging (no pun intended). The problem is that we just don’t have any legit options (Freeman?) with all the injuries, and Glaus has had these “injuries” for a while.
I think we’ll play him until his incentives kick in…and then rest him. I don’t know when those kick in, though. Once Prado and Heyward get healthy, I want to see more of the Infante, Prado, Gonzo, Conrad/Hinske IF…
I still think we need to trade for another bat, but I just don’t know what is legitimately available.
Jman781 - August 15, 2010
i’m thinking his incentives kick in in less than 10 or so games. I could be wrong.
But we’ve got two 1st basemen in the minors who are freaking raking.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 15, 2010
He has already received incentives of $250,000, $350,000 and $350,000. He gets another $350,000 in 48 PA’s, about 12 games then $400,000 and $550,000 for the next 50 PA’s. So, $1.3M more in the next 35-40 games.
Money well spent?
bighop - August 15, 2010
I read that lineup wrong...
1. Infante 2B,
2. Ankiel CF,
3. Gonzalez SS,
4. McCann C,
5. Glaus 1B,
6. Hinske LF,
7. Conrad 3B,
8. Cabrera RF,
9. Injuries
