Stop me if you've heard this one before. Tim Hudson just keeps making hitters look silly. He followed up his best start of the season with, well, exactly the same start:
Hudson vs. Giants, 8/7: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Hudson vs. Dodgers, tonight: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
That is just uncanny. The only slight differences are that Hudson did not get quite as many ground balls tonight (though 14/20 is still awesome) and that tonight's game was closer, so his WPA was much higher (a stunning 0.533, meaning he accounted for more than half of a win all by himself).
Those numbers are even more impressive when you realize that the one walk was to Hudson's first batter. So he gave up only three baserunners in eight innings after that, one of whom was erased in a double play. Oh, and all the hits were singles. That'll do.
For the first six innings, Hiroki Kuroda matched Hudson zero for zero. In those six innings, he gave up only three hits, but all of them were to a leadoff batter. He also walked the leadoff man in another inning. That meant that the Braves had tons of chances to hit with men on base. Unfortunately, they couldn't seem to break through.
Omar Infante led off the first inning with an auto-single but was stranded on first. Troy Glaus led off the second with a double (which was scorched), but never made it past third. A faster runner might have scored on a pitch that got away from Dodgers catcher Brad Ausmus, but poor Troy is just too slow now to score on a garden-variety wild pitch. Alex Gonzalez walked to lead off the fourth, but he was stranded on second. And Rick Ankiel singled to lead off the fifth, breaking an 0-for-14 skid, but he too was stranded at second.
It was a frustrating night, but then the seventh inning came along, and Mr. LICH (Late Inning Clutch Homer) himself came to the plate. You know what I'm talking about, I'm sure--and it's not (Dontrelle) Willis. It's Brooks Conrad, who smacked a ball just over the center field wall to give the Braves the only run they would need all night.
Kuroda ended with a great line: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 BB (1 IBB), 3 K, 0.155 WPA. Most nights, that'd be enough, but as we've learned lately in Tommy Hanson's last few starts, you can't win if your team doesn't score for you.
Billy Wagner came on and worked the ninth for the Braves. He gave up a leadoff hit to Scott Podsednik, but one out later, Podsednik broke for second too soon. Wagner was ready, and he threw to Glaus, who threw to Gonzalez for the out. By that point, the batter (Andre Ethier) was already in a two-strike count. Wagner only needed one more pitch to end the game, striking Ethier out on a wicked slider on the inner half. Cue the mass euphoria at Turner Field.
All in all, it was a marvelous start to an important series. To make things even better, the Phillies were shut down today by R.A. Dickey, so the Braves' division lead is now at 3 games. Hopefully, all the other games in this series go just as well.

MVPs
Tim Hudson-- He's now allowed 1 or fewer runs in each of his last 5 starts.
Brooks Conrad-- 1/3, HR, R, RBI, 0.157 WPA; all 7 of his homers have come in the 6th inning or later
LVPs
Ryan Theriot-- 0/4, -0.180 WPA
Andre Ethier-- 0/4, K, -0.122 WPA
MVP in a Losing Effort
Hiroki Kuroda-- The very definition of a "tough-luck loss."
Stat of the Game
By my count, the teams combined to go 0-for-22 with runners on base (with a sac bunt), and the only walk drawn in that situation was an intentional one. Great pitching? Definitely. Poor hitting? Probably that, too.
Clutch Play
Conrad's homer (0.240 WPA)
Unclutch Play
Podsednik getting caught stealing in the ninth (-0.127 WPA)

Brooks had to HR
he couldn’t let BMac and Infante steal his thunder again.
hawves - August 13, 2010
Did you notice...
Brooks was wearing batting gloves for his homer.
ATLSTU - August 14, 2010
Does he usually go barehand?
I don’t know because I listen to radio streams for game action.
hawves - August 14, 2010
He wears gloves when it's raining.
Pavy848 - August 14, 2010
ok that makes sense
ATLSTU - August 17, 2010
Great win
The next week or so will do a lot to determine the team’s attitude now with a Chipper-less lineup. Win 3/4 against the Dodgers and I think it shows this team doesn’t planning on laying down.
Bobby Cocks - August 13, 2010
I'm pretty sure the team doesn't plan on laying down regardless of what happens in this series.
No way would the guys still able to play allow that.
Erin6 - August 13, 2010
I really loved seeing Chipper bring out the lineup card. Too cool.
MBL1 - August 13, 2010 via mobile
Who was that lady walking out with him?
GouldisGold - August 13, 2010
I can't confirm this...
but I’m pretty sure it was his wife.
sddbaker - August 13, 2010
That was not his wife.
Erin6 - August 14, 2010
Chippers wife stalker!!!
:P
oVecKid - August 14, 2010
Some kind of special guest or contest winner.
like the random ppl that throw out the first pitch.
J-Turn14 - August 14, 2010
Hudson has pitched great this year and I will be mad if he doesn’t get any CY Young or doesn’t finish in the top five. Conrad has been one of the clutchest bat this year. I don’t think he should be starting but he sure is trying to make a strong case.

When was the last time Braves had someone with 30 saves?
Had to be Smoltz
hokie07 - August 13, 2010
Yep. Before that you have to go back to John Rocker.
2009: R.Soriano (27/31) Team Total: 38
2008: M.Gonzalez (14/16) Team Total: 26
2007: R.Soriano (9/12) Team Total: 16
2006: B.Wickman (18/19) Team Total: 44
2005: C.Reitsma (15/24) Team Total: 28 (10/10 by Farnsworth)
2004: J.Smoltz (44/49) Team Total: 49
2003: J.Smoltz (45/49) Team Total: 53
2002: J.Smoltz (55/59) Team Total: 57
2001: J.Rocker (19/23) Team Total: 42 (10/11 by Smoltz)
2000: J.Rocker (24/27) Team Total: 54
1999: J.Rocker (38/45) Team Total: 45
iamthesgt - August 13, 2010
Man
that Reitsma year was brutal. That guy should not have been more than a mop-up reliever, and we had him closing for some reason. We have probably 10 relievers on the team or in the org. who’d be better as a closer right now than Reitsma ever was.
Jacob Peterson - August 14, 2010
John Rocker should go in the Braves HOF......he was the fucking man!!
KJDH2154 - August 14, 2010
But not fucking men. He wouldn’t have tolerated any of that nonsense.
UMDBHIK - August 14, 2010
It was Smoltz. He had 44 saves in 2004.
TonyAlmeyda - August 13, 2010
One more W for the 20 games over .500
When was the last time that has happen?
romone_braves91 - August 13, 2010
I still can't figure out what Posednick was doing with Ethier at the plate.
Scott Coleman - August 13, 2010
Helping the Braves
award6 - August 13, 2010
I am going to assume it was a botched hit and run. Pods ran too early.
romone_braves91 - August 13, 2010
Massive understatement. You don’t take off on a LHP when he still has the ball and has yet to begin his motion.
It was a stupid gamble, and I’m glad it burned them. Podsednik is an overrated POS.
UMDBHIK - August 14, 2010

talking to Huddy
On Conrad’s homer:
"Man, I want to give him a kiss. Tell him I’ll buy him a beer on the next plane flight."
JKowalek - August 13, 2010
but we brought Hicks up
great win- but we brought Hicks up. Timmons would have been someone that can play Defense and brings a stick to the plate.
Look at the AAA defensive stats of both players – gotta question who is making the decisions these days and if a players performance has anything to do with it. IT SHOULD – managing players is also about leading them – yes leadership. someone tell me what the leadership is telling the player in the minor leades.
wow
llabyug - August 13, 2010 via mobile
hicks
is already on the 40 man and prado is coming back in like 3 days. Chill.
Xshare - August 13, 2010
It's not a huge deal to add someone to the 40 man at this point when
we have spots open and there’s very little chance we make a trade. Timmons would be more useful than Hicks, but you’re right that it’s only a few days and not too important.
J-Turn14 - August 14, 2010
prado
prado return next week may be premature based on what i read this morning. its really not a big decision. Do the right thing- bring up Timmons .

Awesome win, and another game gained on the Phillies.
Hudson’s next scheduled start is against the Nationals next week. Can he do this again?
TonyAlmeyda - August 14, 2010
He owns the Nats. I think so.
Scott Coleman - August 14, 2010
8 shutout innings, 3 hits, 6 Ks
Book it.
Jacob Peterson - August 14, 2010
lets hope so
he’s been rolling
JKowalek - August 14, 2010
we need more offense in the rest of this serie
joshant - August 14, 2010
I was there tonight.
It was awesome. I’m now 3-0 at games I attend this year. And I always see someone hit a homerun. First game this year was Chipper/Glaus, second was Heap/Brooks, tonight was Brooks. =D
Tonight was just a fun game to go to. Not too much excitement on the base paths, but a pitchers duel is always fun!
But hands down the greatest thing about tonight for me was that I ran into John Smoltz while I was walking through the concourse. He was getting some Chick-Fil-A and I stood there and gawked at him. Then I shook his hand and tried to talk to him for a second (I was kind of… speechless). It was amazing.
Sarahbeth - August 14, 2010
Anyone else
down to chip in for this person to be at the rest of the games this season and in the post season?
drumzalicious - August 14, 2010
The friend I was with is like 7-0 now in games she attends! And she’s been at all three of the ones I’ve been to, so it might really be her and not me. :)
But sure! I’m down for y’all paying my way to go to the rest of the games!
Sarahbeth - August 14, 2010
@ the game as well
Thanks for the good luck charm action. Be there tonight & ward off the rain. Highlight of the night for me wasn’t even Braves related. A little kid about 5 or 6 dressed in Braves attire points @ the scoreboard & says to his dad “look daddy, the Yankees are losing 3 to 0.” Then starts laughing uncontrollably. I gave the dad kudos for raising his kid right.
adc62 - August 14, 2010
Wish I could have gone tonight
Unfortunately I had to work until 6, and didn’t even actually get away until closer to 6:30!
And aw, that is so adorable! When I have kids, I’m going to be sure to raise them to do the same thing.
Sarahbeth - August 14, 2010
If Huddy gets to 20 wins, he HAS to be a CY candidate, right???
justincredubil02 - August 14, 2010
Candidate, yes. It would take some sort of epic conspiracy for him to not get any support whatsoever, but I doubt he’ll finish first. One of Johnson or Wainwright is damn near a forgone conclusion to win it at this point, barring injuries or JHey deciding to pitch every game from now till Christmas.
J-Freak - August 14, 2010 via mobile
Hudson and Johnson should be competing hard for the second spot in the Cy Young, Hudson has a lower ERA because Johnson got hit hard today, also Hudson has a better W/L record, only significant advantages that could hurt Hudson are the Ks and BBs allowed, that is all.
Kobe:The Legend - August 14, 2010
Sadly
Much like Javier Vazquez’s lone third place vote last year, even 20 wins might get Huddy something comparable at best. Ubaldo Jiminez and Josh Johnson are having career years, and Adam Wainwright is having yet another spectacular year in his own right. And the three of them are really good at striking people out, as well as not missing any starts, and have tidy ERAs to boot, the obvious three things that solely matter in the world. Wins and IPs aren’t going to weigh enough without the strikeouts, regardless of how much we all understand and appreciate the mastery of a Huddy start.
royhobbs - August 14, 2010
I have Huddy 4th on my fictional ballot right now.
In another year, he could easily be 1st. But right now, I’d have this for my top 5:
1) Halladay
2) Wainwright
3) Johnson
4) Hudson
5) Jimenez
The top 3 are really tight right now; any of them could win my vote. I just don’t see Huddy having a chance of topping them, as great as he’s been. He is a solid 4th though; he’s been better than Jimenez. Of course, Ubaldo will win 23 games and take the award easily, but he really doesn’t deserve it.
Jacob Peterson - August 14, 2010
I like offense, but...
1-0 games are special.
I need to apologize to Dickey, who I called “a beer league knuckleballer” a few weeks ago. He looked like Phil Niekro tonight and we appreciate the help.
Sam Jethroe - August 14, 2010
1 hit. And it was to the fricken pitcher!!! AHHHH!
oVecKid - August 14, 2010
Good game
I really liked that Glaus Double. I hope he is about to have a scorching finish to the season.
drumzalicious - August 14, 2010
It certainly looks like he is starting to heat up.
justincredubil02 - August 14, 2010
Can he turn it around mid-month? Or are we gonna have to wait for September 1st?
oVecKid - August 14, 2010
That double is precisely what I was expecting after those last two games in Houston. He seemed to keep hitting the ball hard there, just right at someone. Hopefully he’s starting to really heat up again.
Sarahbeth - August 14, 2010
lol @ LICH
royhobbs - August 14, 2010
I need an explanation.
justincredubil02 - August 14, 2010
Like many, I worked food service in my past
And when doing cashier duties, I was always fascinated by the verbiage used by customers when ordering their food. The ones that came up to the counter and said “I NEED,” I felt resistance and reluctance to serve, and often hesitated to size up the person, and think to myself “Do you really need?”
It was those whom cordially requested or used the phrases “I would like,” or “May I get/have” that unconsciously yielded a higher level of effort and service out of me.
royhobbs - August 14, 2010
Now, I am really confused. I don’t get what that has to do with the picture at all.
I’m just retarded.
justincredubil02 - August 14, 2010
LICH was the acronym used to describe Conrad. The monster that’s killed 3/4ths of the Final Fantasy party is called a Lich.
Tonley - August 14, 2010
I think he wanted you to say "I would like" instead of "I need."
But it’s all moot now.
ATLforlife - August 14, 2010
But I do need one, if I am to understand.
justincredubil02 - August 14, 2010
That is a pretty gimp party
Red mages suck. That gamer should have gone fighter, black belt, white mage, black mage. That party owns.
NES games FTW!
fphjr01 - August 14, 2010
Google screen caps are random
Hahaha, just for shits and giggles, the last time I played through I used four black belts. It was rough at first, but by the time I leveled them up a bit, I was having four guys connecting for like 82 hits and 467 damage terminated all the time. So amusing then!
royhobbs - August 14, 2010
to makes things even better
the phillies lost :D
southman - August 14, 2010
Would loved to have seen Huddy finish it, but a great win nonetheless!
10-4 - August 14, 2010
Only a minor quibble
But WTF does Bobby have against the complete game? In a series where hopefully we’ll need Wags ever night, why not let Tim finish things off? 91 pitches through 8? Can’t imagine he was “running out of gas” at that point.
fphjr01 - August 14, 2010
I... kind of... agree
But Huddy looked a little more questionable in the 8th than the rest of the game and the margin for error was obviously very, very small. Pitch counts are mostly BS and it’s more likely Bobby just didn’t quite like what he saw in the 8th enough so he called in the guy who’s job it is to close out the game.
SuperNewb - August 14, 2010
Agreed.
I would have loved to see the complete game. However, he was pitching in the rain for a few innings and that had to add to the difficulty level/stress of his pitches.
Why does it always seem like Huddy is pitching in the rain?
Pavy848 - August 14, 2010
I was there last night
I was sitting in the stands last night. Usually when I am at a game and they do the Kurt Russell “Hell’s coming with me!” scene from Tombstone on the big screen, it is a crowd pleaser. However, I have got to say that when I saw Wagner was coming in it was a big let down for me. Hudson was awesome and watching his pitch count during the course of the game I thought he had a chance to go nine. I guess I get it that he was having a hard time with the rain as he was having to go to the resin bag a lot and he was cleaning his spikes after every couple of pitches. It just would have been great to see a complete game live. Oh well, Wagner got the job done and we got the win so I guess that’s all that really matters.
JimH - August 14, 2010
Rain + high humidity + elevating pitch count = Take Huddy out.
UMDBHIK - August 14, 2010
Missed the entire game (except a few at bats here and there)...
One of the few times this season, too. It’s nice to get my score update on the phone and see a win.
Other than the stats, I don’t know much about the game, but I know three things:
1. I love Tim Hudson
2. I love Brooks Conrad
3. I love the Braves
Jman781 - August 14, 2010
Gonzo was turning some plays back there, too.
Go BRAVES GOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 14, 2010
I challenge someone to show me another pitcher who is throwing the ball better than Tim Hudson right now in either league. Even his mistakes last night were getting looked at by Dodger hitters. I really didn’t think it was possible for my man-crush on Huddy to deepen, but after Saturday and last night, OMG. I’m getting close to creepy stalk mode.
What a great game and tremendous defense last night. Conrad’s homer was not a Raw Dog homer either.
