It was noted in a Fanshot, but the Braves acquired Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers. The 24 year old outfielder hit .364 with a .1.203 OPS in 15 games in the Majors last year, and has hit .230 with a .753 OPS in 97 games this season between the Tigers' AA and AAA teams. Joining Ramirez in Gwinnett will be Willie Cabrera, who has been promoted after hitting .325 with a .864 OPS in 88 games for Mississippi. He was one of the best players in the Southern league, leaving it 1st in doubles, 3rd in average, and second in OPS.
Gwinnett 9, Toledo 6
Since his demotion to AAA, Nate McLouth has gone 5-14 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Diory Hernandez had a perfect day, with 8 total bases, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, hitting .359 with a .913 OPS in that span. Brandon Hicks homered tonight, but since his demotion to AAA, he's hit just .214 with a .647 OPS in 15 games and has struck out in 41% of his at bats. He also committed his 19 error of the year, getting to that total in 64 games, helping him toward the worst fielding percentage of his career. Steve Marek finished off a flawless July, tossing 14 scoreless innings over 13 appearances, while striking out 17.
Mississippi 0, Huntsville 5
Randall Delgado didn't have much luck in his AA debut, allowing 4 runs in 4 innings. He allowed the Stars hits in bunches and hurt himself with a first inning walk to load the bases. But, he did strike out 6 in that short outing, so there's plenty of hope that he'll be fine.
Myrtle Beach 2, Winston Salem 1, 11 innings
Dan Nelson drove in Cole Miles in the bottom of the 11th for the walkoff win. Cory Rasmus was great in his second start for the Pelicans, allowing just 1 run over 6 innings. Yeliar Castro threw 3 perfect innings, and since the beginning of May he's been fantastic, with a 1.45 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 49.2 innings.
Rome 0, Asheville 10
Willie Kempf picked up the loss in his Rome debut. He's earned 2 promotions this year and for the season he has a 4-1 record, 1.83 ERA, and a 0.83 WHIP in 44.1 innings between the GCL Braves, Danville, and Rome. Andrew Wilson, who celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday, was spectacular in July, with a 0.59 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP in 15.1 innings over 8 appearances. After a hot start, Joe Leonard has cooled off considerably, hitting just .167 with a .383 OPS in his last 9 games.
Danville 0, Princeton 4
Ryan Query had planned to spend the 2010 season starting his coaching career with his alma matter, Catawba College, but instead he signed with the Braves just before the start of Spring Training. In 37 at bats with the GCL Braves, he hit .216 with a .676 OPS. Half of his 6 hits for the team were homers. In 2 games with Danville he's gone 2-8 with a double and struck out in half of his at bats. Regardless of how things turn out for the 22 year old catcher, he's been successful just by being able to have a pro career.
GCL Braves 3, GCL Pirates 4
Cory Brownsten, who the Braves selected in the 15th round this year, hit the first homer of his pro career. The catcher played with Joe Leonard at Pitt. 20 year old righty Danilo Alvarez has been great in 16.1 innings this year, posting a 1.65 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP.
DSL Braves 1, DSL Angels 2
Jean Carlos Gil continues to dominate the DSL. The 19 year old Venezuelan righty has a 1.45 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP in 49.2 innings. He's shown pinpoint control this season, averaging just 0.7 walks per 9 innings.

cb, what do you think of wilkin?
i’ve heard he has all of the physical tools, but can’t seem to put it together
seems like a pretty good pickup if he only cost us cash
kbertling353 - August 1, 2010
I think that’s a great assessment. He’s a big, athletic guy, he can play all 3 outfield spots, he has a good arm, he’s got above average speed, he’s got extra base pop, he’s got all the stuff you want. Right now his ability to hit for average and get on base are the things that are really lacking, but in other seasons he’s done Ok with those.
I was baffled by the way the Tigers handled him this year. He had dominated AA in 08, then played very well in AAA last year and hit great in a very short stint with Detroit. So I really didn’t understand why he was in AA to start the year.
Hopefully the Braves can help him turn a corner because honestly I believe they got a steal and this guy could end up being a regular for the team in a year or two.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
Thanks
My thoughts as well. I can’t believe Detroit gave up a guy like that (top 10 in their system for like 3 yrs). Assuming the PTBNL isn’t someone valuable, this looks like a great, low risk, high upside move by FW.
For a team that’s had a ton of trouble in the OF in recent years, it’s always great to get toolsy minor leaguers in the system.
Kid is only 25. Detroit must either be impatient or needed the cash.
kbertling353 - August 1, 2010
I think a Ramos for Cody Johnson deal seems fair.
Scott Coleman - August 1, 2010
Wilkin Ramirez
I think you’re thinking about Wilson Ramos from the Twins?
Yeah, I wonder what the benefit of not naming the player is though.
I imagine it’s not a guy we just drafted (required to be PTBNL).
kbertling353 - August 1, 2010
Ah shit, yes, Ramirez, not Ramos. That’s what I get for having the TV on. THey were talking about Ramos.
Scott Coleman - August 1, 2010
Bing!
Again, as stated in a previous post…on or about a player’s 25 birthday a good prospect tends to have a breakout year…maybe he is a late bloomer?
bravestatoo - August 1, 2010
I think he’s a Nelson Cruz type player that blossoms late or at least I hope so as a Braves fan lol. Kid has a ton of potential but just does not walk enough for me and Ks a ton. Maybe this is the fresh start he needs though.
Jay212033 - August 1, 2010
I wouldn’t say he played “very well” at AAA last year, a sub .800 OPS from a corner OFer against AAA pitching isn’t setting the scouts afire.
Lennox - August 1, 2010
You’re just arguing semantics over word choices. He also stole 33 bases. He also struck out 143 times. Use whatever words you want. I thought he played very well and I was impressed the times I saw him.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
Sorry, an OBP below .330 and a SLG below .450 from a LFer at AAA just isn’t very impressive to me.
Lennox - August 1, 2010
That’s great, you’re entitled to your opinions. They’re always negative, but you’re entitled to them.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
It touches me that you care so much that I’m negative (realistic) about things.
Listen, there’s a reason the Tigers were willing to drop this guy, and it’s obvious that a big part of it is that he’s had issues with making the jump from AA to AAA.
I never said he couldn’t be a good player or that he’s not going to end up being a steal, but it’s really easy to see why the Tigers sent him back to AA, they wanted him to work on some things and get confident somewhere that he’d already had success before sending him back to AAA for another go ‘round. And he’s seriously had a rough go of it at AAA so far this season.
Lennox - August 2, 2010
In 165 games at AAA he’s got 21 homers and 41 steals. And he plays great defense. Is the average and OBP and even slugging low? Sure. Is that “having a rough go of it”? No. I’d say he’s just developing like any player. I’m sorry he hasn’t met your expectations for what he should do, but he’s shown ability to perform and had the tools to get better.
Your negativity only concerns me because it’s so easy to dump all over a guy, it’s a lot harder to look at the positive aspects. If you just bet against everyone you’re bound to be right most of the time.
cbwilk - August 2, 2010
One thing I forgot to mention is that Wilkin is a Braves type player. He’s a great person and a hard worker and he’s going to fit right in.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
So, do we give Nate another chance?
justincredubil02 - August 1, 2010
eventually
like it or not, he’ll be with us next year too
hopefully, he’ll turn it around in the minors and be ready for a redeeming season next year
(no way we pick up Ankiel’s 6 MM option)
i’d really like to put him in LF with Diaz and get an actual CF though
even if Nate hits, he’s still atrocious in the field.
kbertling353 - August 1, 2010
the one thing Nate did...(TRPMO)
with a runner on 2nd base, It seemed when there was a shallow line drive in front of him he never would pull the trigger to try to throw them out….was his arm THAT bad?
bravestatoo - August 2, 2010
As long as BC
Is here he’ll get another chance.
Jay212033 - August 1, 2010
at his contract...
at least in September. Unless someone is willing to take his contract off our hands, of course Nate gets another chance. Question is when, and I hope not yet. Even if Prado or Glaus end up on the DL, then there’s Canizares, Freeman, Thurston, Hernandez, or Hicks.
I don’t want McLouth to be like Francouer, a couple of games down then think he’s fixed. Give him a month down there, we’ve got Ankiel now, with Melky, Heyward, Diaz, and Hinske, so no need to bring him up.
Mr. Sanchez - August 1, 2010
Im guessing he is the reason y mitch jones was traded or given away i should say lol?
SkipTOoMyL0U_ - August 1, 2010
Depends...
we got cash for Jones, and are supposedly giving cash for Ramirez. Depending on the amounts, it might essentially be a swap of Jones for Ramirez which sounds like a good move to me.
Mr. Sanchez - August 1, 2010
I think there is something to that. They wanted to move Willie Cabrera up and I guess they saw the opportunity to get Ramirez, so they decided Jones was superfluous. I’m not sure how you can feel that way about your teams biggest source of power, but in the long run Willie and Wilkin have a better chance of contributing in the Majors than Mitch.
It’s funny, I saw Mitch last night because it was the first game of Indianapolis’ series here in Norfolk. He said he was completely shocked by the trade. He joked that he was still frazzled because he basically packed up his entire life in about 15 minutes and headed to join Indy. We talked about how that’s an aspect of the game nobody ever thinks about, how the guys have to pick up at the drop of a hat and go to a new place without any idea about where they’re going to live or how the new team does things and they’re lucky if they happen to know one guy on the team. It’s one of the aspects of the game I’ve always been most fascinated with and one most folks don’t even consider.
Anyway, Mitch is a great guy, I’m going to enjoy watching him the next few days and I definitely wish him the best of luck.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
I wonder....
I have read of some farm clubs having some kind of support system (especially for hispanic youth players)…If they don’t, do they end up in some type of “halfway house”…hee hee
bravestatoo - August 2, 2010
Be as it may thought,We seem to always rob the tigers of there best players who have yet too fully develop i.e jair jurrjens. So we can only hope he pans out as well. But solid pickup/possible steal even i think once we figure what we gave in return.
SkipTOoMyL0U_ - August 1, 2010
Can’t wait to see Wilkin hope he turns everything around and can be a star CF for us :).
HeywardFTW! - August 1, 2010 via mobile
2 Minor Corrections
This was Delgado’s second AA start (first 5 IP 2ER 5Ks), and McLouth has 2 HRs, but no doubles, so far in Gwinnett
abravesfan - August 1, 2010
Good call. Appreciate you catching the mistakes.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
Another minor league transaction...
3B Carlos Franco has moved from the DSL team to the GCL team. He’s an 18 year old Dominican.
Mr. Sanchez - August 1, 2010
I saw that. I think he’s pulled an 0-fer so far. There have been more guys moving from the DSL to the GCL than I can ever remember.
I hadn’t noticed until last night, but the Braves cut Alex Romero back in June.
cbwilk - August 1, 2010
Boo McClouth, roll Barbaro roll
It’d be sweet if we could platoon Canizares with Freeman for a fourth of his starts or so if he can keep hitting like this. I think Canizares and Matt Young are big time impact players of the future. Our system is just SO beautifully loaded. Cannot wait to see Kimbrel with control.
