Impressive Minor League Star of the Night: In 15 games with Mississippi Jesus Sucre has 8 XBH (all doubles) and 23 total hits. In 48 games with Mississippi he had 42 hits and 14 XBH.
Charlotte 7, Gwinnett 4
Ryne Reynoso pretty much crapped the bed in the 3rd inning and the offense couldn't catch up. Nate McLouth started his rehab assignment but left the game at the start of the 6th. With the loss Gwinnett falls to 42-47 on the year and is 12.5 games out of first in their division.
Birmingham 4, Mississippi 6
Get it done Willie! Jesus Sucre has been raking since his promotion to Mississippi after psoting a sub-.600 OPS for Myrtle Beach. Brandon Beachy actually appeared out of the bullpen for the first time in almost a month and I can't help but wonder if they are trying to limit his innings or if he was just holding a rotation spot for Kyle Cofield. Either way I think he is going to get another look later in the year or next season.
Myrtle Beach 2, Winston-Salem 8
Matt Crim gave up 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings but he did get 3 double plays, so that is a plus. Luis Sumoza does have 7 RBI in his last 8 games and has been holding course but still not blowing up. Former Braves prospect Jon Gilmore went 3-5 in this game with 2 doubles and is hitting .338 on the season though without a whole lot of power and bunches of errors.
Charleston 5, Rome 6
Rome's offense gets the job done behind a mediocre performance from Robinson Lopez. Todd Cunningham has done an excellent job getting on base though his power has yet to show up though he probably won't develop much power. RSF has been swinging a pretty good bat recently and I would really like to see him bumped up because I think he is old for the league (and maybe the next league up) and we still don't have a good read on how he does vs age appropriate competition.
Burlington 3, Danville 4
Two runs in the bottom of the 8th get Danville the win against the division leading Royals. The Braves got men to 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and then promptly scored 2 runs on consecutive wild pitches to take the lead for good. Willie Kempf walked a man and then gave up a 2 run homer in the 1st inning and then proceeded to set down the next 13 batters for 4.1 pefect innings.
GCL Braves 5, GCL Phillies 3
The Braves middle of the order guys continue to find ways to get on base with Beckwith and Sanchez reaching 6 times total and driving in 3 runs. Matt Lipka also is proving himself worth the pick we used on him with him hitting .400 over his last 9 games with 3BB and just 1K. He has definitely been impressive lately and I can't wait to see what he can do against advanced competition.
DSL Braves 0, DSL Angels 1
When you only get 2 hits in the game you don't get many words out of me.

I mean looks like they only gave up one run!

Seems like DSL is a low run scoring environment
At least, it seems like it has been as I’ve followed it this year. It could be that we have some good pitching there and poor offense. If someone knows if offense is repressed a bit in the DSL, I’d be interested in hearing about it.

I don’t know anything about it honestly, but to me it seems like a league of huge extremes. Every year I look at the stats and I see some pitchers who flat out dominate and some hitters who do the same, then it looks like everyone else is just terrible. It’s very odd because it rarely looks like there are average players.

Hey CB and Matt...question for you guys
You obviously love your minor league prospects, but how much are you able to watch the Atlanta Braves? Every night? On occasion when you get a break from work/minor league games/whenever? Rarely?
I guess I never knew and I was wondering about it for some weird reason.

The past couple of seasons I haven’t seen a whole lot of Atl but this year I have the Extra Innings Package from Directv and I think I have probably seen between 1/2 and 2/3 of the games. I miss some because of work but if they are on and I am home I am watching generally.
yondaime4 - July 10, 2010
I don’t get to watch them anywhere near as much as I’d like. I’ve been to 74 games so far this year, and the nights I’m not at a game I’m often doing a stand-up show or working on making my movie that’s taken forever. I really haven’t watched as much as I’ve wanted to, probably not even 20 games. But, I still feel pretty kept up on the team, mostly cause of this sight, and as long as I’m doing great stuff I don’t mind missing games. I’m always baffled by people who’d rather stay home and watch a game on TV than go out and live life. I love the Braves, I don’t think anyone can question that, but you’ve got to go out and experience some stuff.

I also have a question...
I don’t get to see any of these minor league games but I do read the recaps, but here’s the question: in the opinion of the people who watch him alot, is Freddie Freeman ready to be the starting first baseman in 2011 or does he need more time in AAA?
beeswax - July 10, 2010
I would say he is really close. I think if he starts next season he is going to have an adjustment period like he had in Gwinnett, maybe a little more extreme, but I think he could start next season and be a valuable asset.
yondaime4 - July 10, 2010
At the start of the year I thought this was an easy one, yes, he’ll be ready. Seeing him a few times during the year it became a maybe, with some work. Seeing him the last time and seeing the work he’s put in I’m thinking yes, definitely again. He does the stuff you want a kid to do, work hard and make adjustments. And his plus plus defense is great because even if he’s not hitting for a week he’s still making an impact.

cool
thanks for the answers

Do you think Freeman will get a up with the September callups?
dkinser86 - July 10, 2010
I honestly don’t know. My guess is no since he’s not on the 40 man roster. I’ve been horrible at guessing who they call up in September though. It never seems to me like they call enough guys up.
cbwilk - July 10, 2010
Beachy
Probably not starting because he’s in the All Star game in a couple of days and they’re skipping his regular start just like they did for Teheran before his all star game appearance. Just a guess.
fouskc02 - July 10, 2010
Oh I didn’t realize he had made the team. Well you are more than likely correct.
yondaime4 - July 10, 2010
FF
has a 25 G on-base streak during which (as the youngest player in the IL) he’s raking at .367 (33-90) with 5 HR and 21 RBI.

That got broken on Thursday.
