Impressive Stat of the Night: Willie Cabrera's 26th double tonight puts him in sole possession of the league lead in that category while playing 10 less games than the two guys who were tied with him coming into the night.
Norfolk 4, Gwinnett 9
Gwinnett improves to 8-2 in their last 10 games one the back of some solid offensive efforts from the middle of the order and a good start from Mike Minor. Minor improves to 2-0 with Gwinnett and has allowed just 2 runs while striking out 15 in his first 12.2 innings. Freddie Freeman just manages to keep his on base streak alive with a single but otherwise it was a forgettable night for the young first-basemen.
West Tenn 3, Mississippi 7
Mississippi survives long enough in this one to get their second half record up above .500 and keep hold of second place in the division. Antoan Richardson has been fantastic for the Braves since they picked him up in late May. He gets on base (.423 OBP coming into tonight) and steals bases at a high rate and just generally does everything you want out of a lead-off guy. Willie Cabrera continues doing his thing.
Salem 1, Myrtle Beach 7
After a rough week or so for the Braves top pitching prospects the big boys appear to have righted the ship with Minor, Delgado, Teheran and even Brandon Beachy all having solid starts the past week. Delgado had given up 9 runs in his last 2 outings after leaving the ball up in the zone a little more than usual. Cory Harrilchak, in one game, has gone from a terrible run in the Carolina league to respectable. He now has a modest 4 game hitting streak which has seen him reach base 11 times. I will admit I have a fondness for Harrilchak and what he does but he has to be very good at the two skills he has - high average and the ability to take a walk - in order to be useful. He does have speed as well but he really needs to harness that in the same way Kyle Rose does.
Rome 7, Savannah 6
The 12 strikeouts the Sand Gnats pitchers registered weren't enough to quiet the bats of the Braves on this night. Edward Salcedo looked lost for most of the game and then knocked a 2-out, 2-run triple in the top of the 8th inning and scored on a throwing error to 3B to give the Braves the lead and the win. The 2010 draftees are all looking good so far though no one has shown much power yet.
Danville 5, Johnson City 6
Joe Leonard continues to hit the ball with authority and now has at least one hit and one RBI in every game so far. He still hasn't walked, but when you are hot a lot of times you don't want to let anything go by. Jace Whitmer has pretty much raked since he was sent down to Danville, which is still weird since he was the best hitting catcher in Rome.
GCL Blue Jays 1, GCL Braves 3 - Game 1
Ernesto Silva has had one really bad start and a couple of solid ones. This was one of the solid ones and the Braves had just enough offense to get through the 7 inning game 1.
GCL Braves 0, GCL Blue Jays 3 - Game 2
Edison Sanchez and Matt Lipka both contributed a little with the bat but that was about all the offense the Braves could muster in the second game in which fortunes reversed themselves for both sides.

Willie Cabrera
I really like this kid! He’s looking like a Prado clone just rakes every night and I wouldn’t mind having another Prado in LF.
Jay212033 - July 7, 2010
Cabrera has some power too but that park in Mississippi kind of saps any power guys have when they get there. I think he could probably put up 10-15 a year which, as you say, would be nice in LF, especially with some 20 SB speed to go along with it.

Who do you think is the most underrated prospect in the farm system?
Robinson Lopez? Willie Cabrera? Robert Hefflinger? Oberholtzer?
Bronn - July 7, 2010
i think i always over rate
Oberholtzer after playing against him in high school and watching him pitch. i wonder if its not Mykcal Jones

I actually think Freeman is the most underrated prospect in the system, which is hilarious to think of considering he is pretty unanimously considered the second best prospect we have. But, considering the kid has a chance to hit 20 homers with 30+ doubles in AAA as a 20 year old, that is pretty special. And people were questioning his power potential so much in the offseason.
If i were picking someone thats not a top prospect I would go with Willie probably.

Robinson Lopez and Carlos Perez are vastly underrated.
PWHjort - July 7, 2010
though neither one has done a whole lot yet, more so in Perez’s case.

I agree
neither of them have done much or are really close to a finished product. They have potential, but haven’t really put it together yet. They seem pretty appropriately rated to me.
I’d say freeman and minor are the most underrated. They are both dominating AAA and not getting near the attention that teheran and vizcaino are getting.

hat trick for Freeman
Hopefully tonight was just a dent in his hot streak and not a signal that it’s ending.
Bronn - July 7, 2010
freeman’s single drove in a run when the game was still 2-1, so it wasn’t like a throw away hit when they were up big.
telemakhos - July 7, 2010
One thing I've noticed about Freeman
It seems his Average has jumped about 20-30 points in the last few weeks. Sombody’s hot!!!

Salcedo
I was at the Rome Braves’ game in Savannah tonight. It was my first time seeing Salcedo and I was very excited, but I completely agree with yondaime4 when he said Salcedo looked lost. If I didn’t know he was a top prospect, I wouldn’t have realized it by watching him. And I’m surprised his triple was ruled a hit because it looked like the ball was dropped by the outfielder. Now, I know you can’t judge him off of 1 game, but I was slightly disappointed. I’m sure that he will eventually adjust and show off his full potential.

He's an 18 year old kid whose played 4 games stateside and understands about 15 English words.
Tools are what’s important at this point.
Speaking of which, were you not completely amazed by his physicality as soon as you saw him? ’Cuz I was.
PWHjort - July 7, 2010
Agree...
Salcedo has a look about him. The tools are there and more than one uber-prospect has looked lost. It’s how he bounces back and handles adversity. Given that he’s started late and now he’s in Rome, he will need to adjust. He’s going to be alright.
deester11 - July 7, 2010
15? He spoke English pretty well when I saw him in ST, especially for a guy who had been in the country for about 3 hours.
cbwilk - July 7, 2010
He didn’t understand what I was talking about when I tried to speak with him. Intentional hyperbole, anyway.
PWHjort - July 7, 2010
Well you can’t try to talk about the scientific flaws of Back to the Future with the kid, he barely speaks English! And he wasn’t even alive when it came out.
cbwilk - July 7, 2010
Supposedly he speaks pretty well because the bravest were working with him while he was getting his visa stuff worked out.
yondaime4 - July 7, 2010 via mobile
I agree that he stands out physically. Also, he just DHed so I didn’t get to see him in the field. I was more impressed with Bethancourt. He gunned down two runner at 2nd and it looked easy. I didn’t realize how tall he was.

Freeman
Had a solid night on D at least, making several slick plays, including a nice catch on a foul out and starting what nearly became a 1-6-1 double play.
His ‘hit’ was an infield ‘single’ that the 2B just threw away, though it took a good play to get to even with the Stupid Shift™ on.
They faced a tough lefty tonight in Zach Britton so I don’t think the relatively disappointing game means much.

Matt Young
I was disapointed to see that Willy Taveras was leading off for Gwinnett last night instead of Matt Young. Maybe it was just for one game but I would think that as hot as Matt Young has been, I would think he would not lose his spot in the lineup. By the way, I was wondering if Matt Young ever gets a shot at playing in Atlanta or another major league team. He did well in Mississippi last year and is having a good year this year. I was wondering how others rate Matt Young as a player.
JimH - July 7, 2010
Mitchell Jones
I know he’s 32 and the consummate AAAA player, but it seems like he’d be valuable off the bench against lefties – .318/.352/.667. Plus, all I can find on his defense looks slightly positive. Who’s seen him this year?
eglenn - July 7, 2010
mike minor
What are the Braves gonna do with Mike Minor? The rotation for the next few years seems set. Is he trade bait or is another starter (Jair, Medlen, etc) trade bait? Thoughts?
