Braves Comeback To Beat The Phillies Behind Matt Diaz

Matt Diaz broke out his first multi-hit game since returning from the disabled list on Tuesday night, including two doubles, the second of which drove in Yunel Escobar from first base in the eleventh inning for the winning run. Eric Hinske then followed with some added insurance runs in the form of a towering fly-ball two-run homerun (I forgot which ballpark this was for a moment). Billy Wagner then came on to pick up his 18th save of the year.

The Braves got the game started off right by loading the bases in the first inning, but Troy Glaus grounded into a double play and Yunel Escobar flied out with only one run scoring. Jair Jurrjens then gave up a homerun after a walk in the bottom half of the inning to give Philly the 2-to-1 lead.

The Braves tied it up in the fourth on a David Ross line drive, scoring Matt Diaz, who had doubled. Martin Prado put the Braves in front with a solo homerun in the fourth, but Jurrjens gave the lead right back. After another walk, Ryan Howard barely missed a homerun and ended up with a triple, scoring Raul Ibanez with no outs. With Howard on third and no outs Peter Moylan came on to strike out Jayson Werth, and then Jonny Venters got the two remaining outs. That began some great work by the Atlanta bullpen, which threw five innings of one-hit ball to finish out the game.

Jair Jurrjens pitched great, and really only made two mistakes, but like Derek Lowe last night, those mistakes were with runners on base and produced a maximum return on effort for Philadelphia. The Phillies had only three hits all night, and just two for the first ten innings. The lead-off walks also hurt Jurrjens, as two of his three bases on balls came around to score.

The Braves had plenty of chances to score, as they had 13 hits and 2 walks, but grounded into two double-plays and didn't do much hitting with runners on base (except for Matty Diaz, that is -- and HInske in the 11th).

Overall it was a terrific win for the Braves, who have a chance to win the series tomorrow. This wasn't a pretty win, but it got the job done, and I'll take it.

JJ was on point tonight....

How many times can you pitch a game when you give up more runs than hits. Only allowing two hits to the Phils equal a sick comeback by Jair Jurrjens.

yep

he looked good. Lets win the series tomorrow

Yup

he pitched way better tonight than that boxscore shows.

JJ was on point

when it’s time to rock a funky joint

All the pitchers were very good (even Chavez!) 3 hits allowed in 11 innnings is damn impressive

Yeah

Very, very impressive. Scary how good he can really be when healthy.

I hate Phils fans
that is all

I agree with the above statement
that is all

And the marlins i cant stand that team or the announcers but hell yea jj was on big time all we need now is glaus to come alive against the mets this weekend we need that series going in to the break

punctuation

can be your friend

Hey im on my i phone at work give me a break

Great, great win.

A real gut check. JJ looked fine, the ‘pen picked him up when hefaltered just a little and we outlasted them, even after giving up a royal scoring opportunity on Larry’s boneheaded baserunning.

Awesome fans they’ve got. Run for the hills at the first opportunity.

Love that BMac catch in foul territory. All the guys along the railing yelling encouragement and “attaboys” while Hudson laughs at him for falling down.

That’s Hudson for ya! :P

That guy is beyond awesome

On the field and off.

Love Huddy

one of my favorite Braves of all time. How can you not love him? he’s an awesome pitcher, he’s funny and he does all that stuff with his foundation. Huddy is great.

Exactly

Three huge feathers in his cap.

I know

I was shocked. After the go ahead run almost half of the ballpark left.

That’s just gotta be demoralizing as a Phillies player.

I was

almost surprised that the suicide wasn’t on with Chipper on third.

He just decided to commit suicide, instead.

Eh

You have to run at contact in that situation, especially since Yunel could ground into a double play, Chipper needs to hustle to score at least one run. Luck just didn’t go away and he got caught in a bad run down.

Not really much he can do about it, and I don’t think its a mistake either.

With no one out and the play right there beside you, you really shouldn’t go on contact, any more than you should try to go to third from second on a ball hit in front of you, for the same reason. If The Book says different, then it’s wrong. Maybe break if they try to go to second and start a DP but stay put otherwise.

Just wondering

Who catches if Ross and McCann get injured in the same game?kind of off topic but i’m curious

Raw Dog

I think.

Deion was once our emergency catcher. That would have been FUN.

Nonononono

The order of emergency catcher is Caveman, then Raw Dog

I was going through the threads looking for this. And credit you, of course

Haha. GMTA. I’m on my phone but I saw this and thought I had to jump on the opportunity to post it. Tore through the house to get to a computer. Good times

Well...

That’s why I qualified it.

Matt would be LOL worthy in catcher’s gear. Hudson would have to be hospitalized.

I’m getting that you don’t get the pictoral reference. Emergency! was a 1960s (maybe 70s- don’t know off the top of my head. I think the former) show centered around two parametics (here Diaz and Conrad) with two main doctors back at the hospital (Lowe and Huddy) and the last main figure was the head nurse (Haithcock). So in the metaphor only Brooksy and Diaz would put on gear because only Roy and Gage (the two parametics) went out to the field. Well most of the time anyway. Great show.

Get it?

Que?

Dude

I’m 42. That was my favorite show as a kid. John Gage was played by Randolph Mantooth, who was about the coolest guy on the planet in the mid 70’s and Roy DeSoto was played by Kevin Tighe, who has gone on to be a John Sayles regular, including in Eight Men Out and, more recently, as John Locke’s ass of a father on Lost. (I’m doing all of this from memory, btw…I won’t go on and talk about Dixie and the guy played by Bobby Troup who was Julie London’s real life husband, but I think you get the idea.)

So…yeah, I get it.

My observation still stands: Diaz would look, and be, hilarious in catcher’s gear.

Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!

I took her to a nice seafood dinner tonight

I will smash your face into a car windshield then take your mother Dorothy Mantooth out for a nice seafood dinner and NEVER call her again!

Dude, that’s awesome. And I agree. Diaz would be hillarious

1970’s and probably early 80’s as well.

I know I read something...

in the past week (while Ross had the dinged finger, and before Diaz was back from the DL), that the backups were Conrad and ….wait for it… Yunel!

I will try to find my source.

haha thanks everyone! :P

That would be connrad hes the back up up

Good game by Matty

I hope it’s a sign of things to come because I really like him.

Another reason

Diaz is one of my favorite players. The guy just hustles so much and can come up clutch in big moments. Scoring Yunel from first was huge and just took everything out of the Phillies.

Credit to Jair for an absolutely fantastic game.

I just hope we can do better against Moyer than we did last time. I think he got a 2 hit shutout.

i say we tack onto his HR count
If Matty D can show up tomorrow liike tonight....

there should be no worries about Moyer. I have a feeling the lineup for the Good Guys will be

1. Prado
2. Infante
3. Chip
4. Glaus
5.. Mac
6. Esco
7. Matty D
8. Blanco
9. Meds

That’s just an educated guess.

i kinda wouldn't be surprised if we see rossy again catching just because its another lefty up and that's another righty bat we can squeeze in there

but otherwise yes…although i sorta wonder if matty d won’t move in front of esco

Matt Diaz is a baseball player/ I F*N LOVE MATT DIAZ

/thread

There were a lot of crappy at-bats in this game,

led by Glaus with the bases loaded and no outs in the 1st and Escobar with runners on the corners and no outs in the 8th. But the pitching held the Phils in check long enough for us to get into the back end of the Philly pen. Great job by the relievers. And welcome back to the world of competent hitting, Matt Diaz! It’s great to have you!

Oh, and one note about Bobby’s bullpen management. I know it all worked out in the end, but he really should have used Wagner while it was still tied instead of waiting for the lead. We ended up having Chavez in there in a high-leverage situation and Wagner in a comparatively low-leverage situation (despite the “save”). That is sub-optimal, and could easily have cost us the game.

I'm not complaining, though, just to be clear.

Any game we beat the Phillies is a good game! Now lets win the series tomorrow—preferably without going to extra innings!

At home

I would agree with you about Wagner, but not on the road. I would rather save Wagner to close out the game if we took the lead, I would not want to have to ask Chavez to go out there in a save situation.

this

on the road, you get the opportunity to put your closer in once you take the lead. Also, chavez was in there to face the worst of the worst of the phillies lineup. After werth, he faced castro, valdez, and sardinha. I’d much rather have chavez face the bottom of a top-heavy lineup than let him in there in a save situation.

So you don’t have confidence in Chavez pitching with a lead, but you’re okay with him pitching in a tie? At least with a lead, if he gives up run(s) the game may still continue. If gives up run(s) in a tie, we lose.

for the record, I’m not comfortable with chavez pitching at all. When he came in, I thought that bobby was sick of being at the ballpark and wanted to go home.

Your argument makes a lot of sense. The one thing I will say is that chavez can potentially do multiple innings. Not knowing the situation that would happen, you put your long man in to go until he’s tired and you need to go to the next one and you have your closer fresh to lock the game down after you score your runs.

You're absolutely correct

Saving the game is not as important as holding the lead.

Surprisingly

Since I’m a Cox Strategy Skeptic and I make people sick of hearing me say “Sometimes the save is in the 6th or 7th inning”…I was okay with it.

Last at bat in that dump for the Phillies is always a higher stress situation than it might appear on paper.

Rec'd

I would hate to have to watch us pitch is that park 82 games a year…Goodness.

I wouldn't

It’d mean we would be the home team and get the last ABs.

That being said, I prefer us being in a pitcher-friendly or neutral field.

BUT BUT…Wags had to get teh savez! Bobby knew that

Damn NL East....

Any other year, a record of 49-35 would result in a lead of at least 6 maybe 7 games but this year it’s only 2. I guess the other teams are forcing the Braves to earn the Division Crown. Let’s Go Bravos!

Fight til the end...

So we’ll be sharp for the playoffs, I’m cool with it

ESPN highlights in this game

included the Phillies bullpen and how they absolutely shut us down in the 8th when Contreras and Romero got out of a jam. A graphic and everything showcasing the Phillies bullpen. Then they casually mention how Diaz hit the game-winner.

ESPN makes me sick sometimes

To hell with ESPN....
How bout that ESPN?

Fuck Em!

This.

Yet another reason to watch MLB Network. Monday night they had HR and Joe Migrane (sp?) talking about the Braves v the Phillies. HR was still riding the Phillies train, but Joe goes flat out, if you want the most complete and balanced team in the NL East without question its Atlanta. That just made me realized how much better MLB Network is.

What?

ESPN didn’t highlight Chris Farley’s twin brother give up the homer to Hinske? Talk about crappy sports journalism.

All I could think was

Your Delta Tau Chi name is…………..FLOUNDER!

Dorffman...

…I’ve given this a great deal of thought…

I just saw your comment after I made mine. I hate ESPN.

Sooo glad to get the W.

Losing that game would have hurt for a while. Chavez just wins baby!

This was the second game in the last week or so where I showed up around the 10th/11th inning and then the Braves won. :)

How about Escobar?

Everyone is so eager to berate the guy when he has a bad game, how about a little love tonight. 2 for 5, scores the game winner from first on a double, and really kept the game from being a loss with 3 excellent defensive plays at SS that most shortstops in the league would not have made.

+1

A lot of people around here are like Prussian drill instructors.

Absolutely.

I love Yunel.

Moyer needs to be punished tomorrow.

He won’t be pitching against the april Braves this time.

I sense bad things may happen tomorrow.

I sense the Braves kicking the shit out of a punchless Phillies team. I worried about Lowe vs. Halliday. I’ll take Medlen over Moyer all day long.

Moyer's false teeth falling out?
Moyer falls...

and can’t get up?

11 year old pitching against a 97 year old. Should be interesting.

had a dream last night

in it, jason heyward was called out trying to steal home, and he was obviously safe. it would have tied the game 2-2 in the 7th

Who took the lightning bolt he called down?

Did you guys and gals see the guy fall from the 2nd deck in Texas?

Holy shit….i mean, that’s gruesome. The reactions from the people there almost made you throw up.

man...

i am SO glad that they dont have actual video of him falling – just seeing the ump throw his hands up makes me sick

I didn’t see a video, but I heard about it. That’s horrible. I hope he’s alright.

hope he’s alright, too. anybody got a vid/pic?

There’s one on MLB.com. It’s quite freaky.

damn

sucks for them. I’ve got a thing about heights. the concept of falling like that is absolutely terrifying to me. you’ll never see me on top of the Green Monster

That’s actually a good fear, though. I have a thing about falling too. That’s why i wanna go indoor skydiving, never really jumping out of a plane! lol.

At my work meeting last night

Our boss told us that the winner of the competition after the month was over got to go skydiving with him. I was like…“Can I lose on purpose?”

Not really trying to be glib, but the falling isn’t the problem. It’s the landing that sucks.

haha that’s true.

lol................

that’s kind of like saying, “guns don’t kill people. bullets do.”

NEITHER combined is a good thing

“lol”

Let's be honest

The most important part of last night’s game was getting Chavez his first win. I’m sure that was the motivation for Diaz.

Philly Fans !!!

YA GOTTA LOVE EM !!! HEADING FOR THE EXITS AFTER HINSKIE HITS THE BOMB !!!

Things I learned at the game last night

1) Phillies fans know very little about baseball
2) TC wouldnt let me log in through Yahoo so I could drop in live during the OT
3) Theres a reason those girls work at the strip club on a Tuesday night

Phillies and Eagles fans

Are some of the very stupidest people alive.

Sorry for not getting this up for you guys!

I got home from work and my power was out, so I had to hit up gondeee to cover it for me. Great stuff by him as usual.

memo to Ernie - at least ACT like you're having fun,

as opposed to having the personality of a toaster.

Smoltz is key, but this “spreading out” of Chip and Joe is not cool…..kind of like PeachtreeTV.

Aside from that, GO BRAVES

Oh yeah,

Phillies ball girls are babes. le sighhhhhhhhh

Cool of the team

To spring for them actually having the names on their jerseys. Almost makes up for that asshole mascot of theirs.

But not quite.

The Braves need some girls out there doing that.

maybe some war paint here and there…..?

Great win for the Braves,

not it’s time to shut down father time.

I love this team.....

“I told Rossy before the game that we were going to combine for four hits and he was going to have three,” Diaz said. “He told me I was selfish after the game because I took the three hits.”

I would just like to say MLBN and everyone who works there can go leap off a jagged cliff for forcing the stupid Sawx/Rays game instead of Braves/Phils. Why do you do this to me MLBN? Because I live in an AL market? I’m pretty sure Philly is closer to me than St. Petersburg is.

Bastards. I hope you all catch the clap from Reynolds.

I’m traveling so I didn’t get to see the game so I had to catch the highlights on ESPN.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. They didn’t make ONE mention of Jurrjens giving up only 2 hits, focused most of the highlight on the Phillies shutting us down in the 8th and didn’t show Hinkse’s homer in the 11th. Wow. What a complete shit highlight. You would have thought from the segment that he Phillies were killing us.

It’s always going to be that way with ESPN Evan I f we won the world series they would give the team we beat more props they never give the braves any respect !

It's been like that for years.

Literally for decades.

Ok I don’t get it why can’t we hit moyer he’s 187 years old he throws 80 . We just can’t hit him other than prados HR he made chipper look older than him and glaus who has 5 HRs against him in the past ,looked older than moyer to are bats better come alive or it’s going to be a long night . Don’t get me wrong we are the better team by far but there’s something about moyer I hate the old prick go BRAVES!!!

Ops my bad we came alive now I’m glad I was wrong I can’t stand that old shit it’s about time we hit the shit out of him it’s all over now there’s no stoping us we can beat moyer I love it and meds is the shit scratch that prodo is the shit go BRAVES!!!!

O and Diaz to glad to have him back !
