This is your thread to discuss all things related to the Trade Deadline. Teams have until 4pm EST to make trades without having to send players through waivers before the trade is approved.
Will the Braves make a move? For my money, the Braves won't do much of anything. At most, they'll add a reliever to help the fatigued 'pen down the stretch. But hey, that's just my opinion.
Last year, the Braves acquired Adam LaRoche for Casey Kotchman. At the time of the trade, I'd say that at least the majority of TC wasn't too thrilled with LaRoche being our only move. The Braves were hot, and some fans were un-realistically expecting a superstar for the 2nd half. Little did we know Roachy would have one of the better 2nd halves of any player traded at the deadline.
Let's just all keep this in mind: Whatever happens, happens. Frank Wren is a fantastic GM and he knows what he's doing. Embrace any new Braves players with open arms and say farewell to any players who leave the organization. We owe it to them.

Trade for Adrian Gonzalez!
Sorry…couldn’t resist.
Sam Jethroe - July 31, 2010
Greetings from the Czech Republic
My best prediction:
Chippah to the Yankees for Jeter
SuperNewb - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Prague was a great time.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Greetings SuperNewb
Chipper Jones won’t get traded he has a 10 years of Major League Experience and 5 years on the Braves for his no-trade clause so he can veto a trade whenever he wants.
JustaBrave - July 31, 2010
he was kidding ;)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
weird
i live in Prague, too.
and there’s a BRAVES fan, too? where you live? I’m in Hradcanksa.
apoxonbothyourhouses - July 31, 2010
You LIVE in Prague???
You are now my hero.
Can you tell the little black man that wears the red suit and red hat that tries to get people to go into his strip club that I said hello? He works on one of the main streets that leads into Charles Square.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Sounds like an awkward friend to have
Bronn - July 31, 2010
He promised me free shots if I would go to his club…he still owes me.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
STAND PAT WREN
Keep the faith and the prospects…. fear is the darkside of the force
fizzbot - July 31, 2010 via mobile
not sure what fear and prospects have to do with it…
FF is the only prospect that could possibly come up this year and we have a pretty good guy at his position right now anyway. Any move today is about this year and giving Bobby a proper send off.
SuperNewb - July 31, 2010 via mobile
The point of prospects is not what they can do this year. If you can pull off a trade (even for top prospects) that can bring in a legitimately good player then I’m all for that, but I don’t want to see a trade for the scrap or career-year regression candidates (Hello, Alex Gonzalez!) that make up most of what is left on the market.
And we’ve actually had one of the worst starting 1B in baseball. Out of 28 qualifying 1B, Glaus is 22nd in WAR. Of course, you couldn’t expect Freeman to do any better as a 20-year-old.
Ron A. - July 31, 2010
Say it with me...

J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Hey guy I see Clevlan got DFA'd
I wonder whats up with that?
UpstateNyBravesFan - July 31, 2010
Out of options
Blanco will take his roster spot. Doesn’t mean a move us on the way, though its worth noting that we only have 39 guys on the 40-man anyway.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Options didn't matter...
he’s been up and down already, so that isn’t it. DFA means removing him from the 40 man, not sending him down. There is a difference. And we have 38 guys on the 40 man last I counted (Luis Valdez is restricted and shouldn’t be included).
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Actually, my dear sir, options DO matter. Options are used up by the year, not by the callup. In other words, if this were an option year, we could option him back to AAA again as often as we please within the “cannot be recalled again for 10 days except in the event of injury” restriction. How many trips he makes back and forth is completely and utterly irrelevant. But it’s not an option year. Meaning that to get him off the 25 man roster in order to make room for Blanco, we have no choice but to DFA him, thus exposing him to waivers, because we no longer have the ability to option him back.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Clevlen started the year in Gwinnett...
so unless we purchased his contract to call him up or something, we’ve already used an option on him this so, so hence why didn’t matter.
Can we get clarification on this?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
If he’s signed on a minor league deal he can start off there, but without options he can’t be returned once called up. Unless he clears waivers, in which case we can assign him back to the minors or release him.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
thanks Freak
didn’t realize he had been up and down so much when he was a Tiger. I guess that explains it.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
just blanco being recalled according to twitter
SuperNewb - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Alright thanks guys! I just had to read into it a little bit…
UpstateNyBravesFan - July 31, 2010
Pujols.
That is all.
frozendesert - July 31, 2010
I'm calling it
Out of nowhere, the Braves get Fielder and Hart for Minor, Freeman, Melky and a handful of our awesome young minor league pitching.
I know the Brewers have said that they are “too close to contention” to trade Fielder or Hart, but they are 9.5 games out at the moment… and it makes no sense for them not to trade those guys.
They need pitching, we need hitting… it just seems to match up well for us, despite Fielder’s massive girth and douchebagginess.
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
If Grand Poobah Whiny Fag comes over here, consider me a Red Sox fan. Also, I hope Bobby punches him in the dick.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
37 times.
But, still, he’d be a welcome addition manning first in my book. I’ve always liked Glaus, but he just looks as beat down as Brett Myers wife at the moment.
I’d let Glaus and Chipper split time at 3rd and rest them both a little bit.
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
And
We’d have him for this year, we’d have to give him arbitration next year, and then he’s gone, and we’re stuck once again since we traded Freeman for a rental.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Melky could go and I wouldn’t care. But I’d hate to see Minor (local boy, umpired a lot of his high school games) and Freeman go though.
And I can’t stand Fielder, some player’s abilities aren’t worth dealing with their stupidity (See Yunel).
musicman - July 31, 2010
FW would never, EVER trade for fielder
not after the HBP fiascos. can you imagine the headache FW would get thinking about the deterioration of team chemistry?
atl192485 - July 31, 2010
There’s gotta be something brewing that we don’t have a clue on…
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Haven’t you heard? We’re in the hunt for bullpen help!
Lennox - July 31, 2010
Well, cross Qualls of the list.
I did hear we were interested in Downs.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
We have so much of that sitting in the minors right now….
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
Seriously.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Well, according to MLBTR and elsewhere...
we;ve acquired Michael Noboa from the Dbacks to help DSL for some reason, sent Mitch Jones to the Pirates for cash (hope he plays for ‘em), and cleared Clevlen off the 40 man giving us (by my count —http://mlb.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=atl , 20 pitchers since Valdez doesn’t count, 18 position players, and if Clevlen has been removed as MLBTR reported, that gives us 17 position players and 37 players total). So we’re up to something it certainly seems.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Frank Wren makes me smile…that motorboating son of a bitch.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
So what does all that mean if we stand pat?
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
That Freddie and Minor get called up.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I’d be ok with FF, but where does Minor go? To the pen? That seems like a waste.
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
Well, Minor would take JJ’s spot in the rotation after we trade JJ for Kemp, but if we stand pat, that means there is no JJ trade, so I guess I jumped the gun on Minor.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
JJ for Braun or McCutcheon, gets your fantasy straight
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
You just took this to Jesse Jane levels.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Jesse Jane......
I’ll be back in 15. :)
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
Add Riley Steele and make it 5 minutes.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
actually
JJ + another pitching prospect (Delgado) should get us Kemp.
apoxonbothyourhouses - July 31, 2010
Ask Wren...
I’d expect we add a 3rd C eventually (be it Sammons or another) for depth in September. Maybe Glaus is about to be DL’d to rest his legs, and they’ll call up Freeman or Canizares. Maybe they are making room for Scott Proctor, or Matt Young. Could be a number or reasons.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I don’t understand why they always add a 3rd C – isn’t that what Diaz is for?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Emergency C and 3rd C are different in my mind...
I think Diaz can catch, if he has to and everyone else goes down so we have to put someone there. Having a 3rd C makes sense when we get to September, especially with Ross and McCann so that if one’s starting, you can use the other’s bat in a pinch hit spot but still have someone else that can adequately work behind the plate if need be. I doubt they trust Diaz to really do a good job back there, and would much rather have Sammons or someone else.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
A condundrum....
Do I post about what I want to happen and who I want to trade for or who I think the Braves will trade for?
Hmmmm
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
both
Would love to hear it.
musicman - July 31, 2010
I WANT
the Braves to land Matt Kemp to play CF. Trade Kawakami, Minor, Delgado, Johnson and Vizcaino (yeah yeah, I said it) to the Dodgers for Kemp and a BP arm.
Then platoon Nate and Diaz in LF and Glaus and Hinske at 1B. Bat Kemp second and move Heyward back down to the six-hole.
RHP:
Prado, M.
Kemp, M.
Jones, C.
McCann, B.
Hinske, E.
Heyward, J.
McLouth, N.
Gonzalez, A.
LHP:
Prado, M.
Kemp, M.
Jones, C.
McCann, B.
Glaus, T.
Diaz, M.
Gonzalez, A.
Cabrera, M.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Our future pitching staff relies on those prospects
Wiping out three of them in one trade would be just brutal. I like the idea of Kemp, but that package is overkill.
BigG1392 - July 31, 2010
switch Delgado for Schafer (if he still has any worth)
but Minor and Vizcaino would have to go to make the deal even plausible.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
the dodgers are not
getting rid of kemp…..especially now that they got ted lilly and ryan theriot… matt kemp goes no where
d1gram420 - July 31, 2010
So, if Prado’s finger is broken, does that make it more likely that we make a move?
Lennox - July 31, 2010
Wait, what? His finger is broken???
In that case, bring back KJ!
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
X-rays were inconclusive last night on his right pinky, he’s being examined again today.
Lennox - July 31, 2010
How did he do that running the bases? Was it on a slide?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Yeah. He slide head-first into home and his right hand got caught under him.
musicman - July 31, 2010
And this is why I was taught in highschool to run while gripping your batting gloves in your hands.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Hand got caught underneath him sliding into home.
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
Sliding in to home on the Heyward go ahead double in the 10th, his body came down on top of his right hand.
Lennox - July 31, 2010
We may have to because with the current roster I’m not sure who would lead-off and do well at it.
musicman - July 31, 2010
Almost has too doesn't it?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
One would think it’d add incentive to trade for a bat, for sure.
Lennox - July 31, 2010
Breaking News................
Mitch Jones traded for cash!!
musicman - July 31, 2010
Are you being sarcastic? I can’t tell.
If not, that happened yesterday, and it was talked about quite a bit.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Yeah. It was kind of a running gag last night in the game thread.
musicman - July 31, 2010
My fail.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
NP
It is early. You can tell today is the trade deadline. The joint is hopping.
musicman - July 31, 2010
Hopping?
It’s like Christmas morning.
I wonder what we get…
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Frank Wren was at the Pink Pony last night making it rain
DCP916 - July 31, 2010
I am pretty confident
that if Martin Prado is out for a long time (4-6 weeks or something like that) we trade Kelly Johnson. That would be a good fit in multiple ways.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
I support this post.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
That'd be fine, but...
…I wouldn’t want that to be our only move.
I really want a RH CF.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I’d rather get a corner OF, and move Heyward to CF for the duration of this season, then get a CF in the offseason. When I say corner OF, I mean like a Choo or a Braun or a Kemp – a BIG bat, no Cody Ross crap.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I’d take Ross if he came with Uggs.
Move Prado to 1st/3rd next year.
Kelly's Big Johnson - July 31, 2010
Arrest me for heresy, but...
I don’t think Heyward would be good in CF in the long-term (long-term being the rest of the season as opposed to the last few innings of a couple of games due to defensive replacements.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
He wouldn’t, long term. That’s why I said for the duration of this season and get a CF in the offseason.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
kemp's a CF
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
*for Kelly Johnson I mean
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
I would love a CF also....
but who is out there that is trading for? Matt Kemp? I’d be shocked if the Dodgers moved him. B.J. Upton is headcase material. DeJesus is out. Posednik is gone. I’m not really sure who else.
My option for the OF. Get Josh Willingham somehow (don’t know how likely), put Gregor in CF for the rest of the year, or if you want to keep the Diaz/Hinske platoon, move Jason to CF. That is what I would do. But I’m not a GM lol.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
what about Marlon Byrd from the Cubs?
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Luke Scott > Willingham, for the simple reason that Baltimore is not a division rival stubbornly asking for the moon in return.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Wishlist:
Matt Kemp
Jacoby Ellsbury
Luke Scott
Marlon Byrd
Brett Gardner
Josh Willingham
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
My version
Dunn
Choo
Braun
Willingham
Gutierrez
Ellsbury
Scott
Kemp
Adam Jones
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I know he was in talks this winter,
but is Choo still on the block?
And no way in hell Braun goes anywhere, unless the Brewer’s LFer has a brother who plays CF that I didn’t know about ;)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
My list is not realistic at all.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
No it is not...
and changing the subject, with the flurry of crap over the last day or two, I checked some old archives to see what got shoved down and I missed. Proctobombs can be pretty funny some times. 4-5 days after a post has been dead, probably not even on a front page or anything, and somehow he pops in with like 10 comments. WTF Bomber?

Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I love that guy.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
The best part is when he Proctobombs a game thread, and answers the question “Anyone know tonight’s lineup?” that was asked 2 hours prior to game-time, and he doesn’t show up until the next day.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Does he get off on having the last word (even when no one else will notice)...
and why does he skip live and currently active threads to blast away in ones a couple days, if not a week old? It’s like his computer is on an extreme delay or some shit. Just weird.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Dude, that would put his computer at 10-4 levels. lol
I mean, I know that I enjoy a good debate, and you do too, but that guy…wow.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
No, I agree...
he’s pure argument for no reason. Like Markakis would use a no trade clause to stay in Bloodymore, Murderland instead of coming to Atlanta, or Prado is “mediocre”.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Remeber the whole “Schafer didn’t break his arm!” deal?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Yeah, he makes us look agreeable somehow...
at least we have common sense and can either be reasoned with or agree to disagree while seeing the other side’s point.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
and with Cleveland, anything is possible. They are not very well-run right now.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
EDIT
Dammit, I did not mean Ellsbury. I meant Sizemore.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I'd like Ellsbury a lot...
especially if he didn’t cost what you’d expect him too (based on how he was a year or two ago), I’d definitely like that, sticking him in CF or LF and at the top of the order. A healthy group of him, Odarp, Chipper, Heyward, Heap, and Glaus is a pretty good start in my eyes.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Isn’t Baltimore known for over valuing their players and being difficult to deal with?
Lennox - July 31, 2010
To a degree, and that’s the Angelos influence, but at least Baltimore didn’t come out and say “any team that gets Scott is going to hurt a lot more for getting him than we will for giving him up.”
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Any Truth to the rumor...
On trading for Jacoby Ellsbury from the sox? That could be the best pick up with out breaking the bank on a slugger type.
Hanson-Ace - July 31, 2010
Where did you find said rumor?
If it’s just from talks here, then no – only wishful dreaming.
I’d LOVE a true lead-off hitter to put Prado back in the two-hole and move Heyward back down to sixth.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Not wishful thinking- reported on MLBTR. As per FW’s MO, there have since been no confirmations that we are or aren’t nearing deal, and there’s always the possibility it was a smokescreen, trying to drum up interest in Ells while Franky makes a run at someone else. He seems particularly wily when trying to get something done.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
I’ve been on MLBTR since 1 AM your time, and I haven’t seen anything of the sort. Have a link?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
You wouldn’t have, as this was about 3 days ago. And I’m posting from my Droid, and have neither the battery nor the patience to go digging for the link. Sorry.
It wasn’t a very meaty rumor, basically just stating that the GMs have spoken about him without saying whether we were close to a match or not, and there’s been no followup in more recent days.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Droid >>>> iPhone.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
no way >> in hell
Kidding – I’m just biased ;)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Droid is the fastest selling smartphone, IIRC.
It makes me mad that Verizon is getting the iPhone in January – why? They already have a better phone. I want the Apple fad to die.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
but "Droid" is such a vague term now
and describes any one of like ten different phones.
No phone individually has matched the iPhone is sales :P
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Of course not. Because, Apple is a fad that all the kids like. Most professionals use either the Droid or Blackberry.
iPhones are just like shiny coins – kids would rather have a shiny coin than a dirty dollar.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
And apple is the only one that makes Iphones...
not sure on droid or blackberry, but if they can be an overarching name with several different makers, that skews stats. But then, I’m not that tech savvy so they may be exclusive to one company like Iphones.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Only Blackberry makes Blackberrys, but Droid is manufactured by several different companies.
When I say Droid, I only refer to Android – the others are kinda crappy, IMO.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Blackberry is exclusive to Research in Motion, but Android is an OS, not a device. Google wrote the software, but multiple manufacturers including HTC, Motorola, and Samsung produce handsets powered by Android.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
thanks freak
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
THIS
Wait- the ViPhone is Now confirmed? I know its been speculated for over a year now, but I missed thus little nugget where its gone official.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Someone here got an email from Verizon asking them to pre-order. My friend that works at Verizon said they weren’t getting it as recently as 2 months ago.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Don't blame the kids - the kids are our future :P
I don’t think “fad” is the right word.
It’s more the idea that the iPhone came out first, and Droid is seen as the attempt to recreate it on different networks.
The Zune may in fact be a hundred times better than the iPod, but the iPod will still sell more.
It’s harder to beat the stop than stay on top.
And to make this back on track – one reason I am so glad the Braves are still in first at the Deadline.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Plus, let’s don’t forget they got that cute little apple logo on ’em.
I own nothing Apple except my iPod, and I won it in a contest. LOL
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
My theory on Apple – They are very innovative, but they can’t stay above the competition for long. Look back to the 80s when Apple/Mac led the way in home computers. Then Microsoft caught up, passed and blew them away in the 90s. Now, in the 00s, Apple has created a new technology (the touch-screen) and are leading the technological charge again. However, Windows 7 is better than any Mac OS, and like has already been mentioned, the Droid, Zune, etc are actually better than the iPhones.
It won’t take long for people to recognize.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Windows 7 as an OS, maybe.
But most people would prefer a Mac over a PC for numerous issues if finances weren’t one of them.
I own two desktops and two laptops in my home, and none are Macs. Namely, because I am a poor college student and cannot afford them, not because I just have a ‘happy’ for PCs.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I wish some people would write viruses for Macs and just end that whole “advantage” they enjoy.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
It might take longer than you’d think, because Apple has succeeded at creating a market of Sheeple who, every year, chuck out their 45th generation iDevices to go out and acquire- by paying the same full price they payed last year for their 45th gens- the brand new 46th Gen iDevices, now with marginally improved volume controls, 1 oz less weight, and… TWO shiny apple logos.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Don’t forget the whole “iPad is soooooo COOOL! It’s like an iPod, only BIGGER!”
“Dude, it IS an iPod, only bigger…”
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
or, the financial-savvy of us...
Wait until said 46th gen devices come out, and then buy the 45th generation cheaper ;)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I just bought a 160GB ipod from 1saleaday.com for $150.
It is replacing my 2nd generation 4GB Nano that I have had since 2004.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
*cough*hypocrit*cough*
kidding ;)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Why? I use an iPod when I work out. I found a great iPod for $150. It was a steal.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Where’s your Zune?
or Wal-Mart brand mp3 device?
or cassette player?
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I don’t have a Zune, bc I have a 4GB Nano that I got as a gift back in 04 – before the Zune ever came out.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Traitor.
I used a Creative Zen Vision:M, which was technically superior to whatever the iPod Gen of the time was in 06. I went directly from that to my Droid this April. But my Zen still works lime clockwork, and I use I while running so as not to risk my shiny new Droid.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
And this is why I have an iPod – so that I don’t mess up my droid.

This
heap16 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
I’ve checked MLBTR religiously and haven’t found anything.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
If not Ellsbury, maybe Cameron?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Just remembered...
Ellsbury is on the DL still, isn’t he? That means he couldn’t be traded even if the Sox wanted to trade him for Jesse Chavez.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
This sentiment has shown up a lot in recent days, but it’s absolutely untrue. Remember the Peavy deal last year? It technically requires league approval, but that’s just a formality usually and yes, someone on the DL can indeed be traded.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Good to know, thanks!
Misinformation fail.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Does the league have to approve or just the team have to waive a physical?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I read somewhere that it requires league approval, but that certainly didn’t stop the Peavy or Mark Lowe deals.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
OK...
like you say, it has to be a formality or just something they keep up their sleeve for extreme cases.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I’m not even sure what would be considered “extreme” anymore. MLowe got traded and then promptly transferred to the 60 day DL to make room for someone else, and word is he’s out for the year, yet that deal whizzed right through.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
But he wasn't exactly the main piece of that deal...
Lee and Smoak were. I’d assume it’s reserved for say an extreme salary dump or obviously collusion type deal. Say like we sent Chris Resop to our old friend Dayton Moore for Zach Greinke.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I’d have to change my pants.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Ellsbury > Cameron
I’d assume the Red Sox would want something to help them now. Maybe KK and a lefty reliever, plus a lower prospect?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I’d do it in a heartbeat. I feel bad for KK pitching in Boston though…not really a fly-ball pitcher’s park.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Why do we waste him so?...
I don’t get that either. Is he hurt? The guy can actually pitch pretty well, and Bobby is smart enough to know that. Something ain’t right.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
You know my feelings on the subject. It’s one of the few things that the org does that pisses me off.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
But that's just not like Bobby Cox...
he knows how well Kenny has pitched, and knows how he’s been in the past. He plays favorites sure, but he at least gives his end of the line guys work from time to time, and can use him like Chavez or others. 1 time in a month, really?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
And it isn’t like Meds has torn it up in the rotation. I think KK in the rotation and Meds in the pen makes for a better team all around.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I don't go that far...
I think Medlen has been great as a starter. But KK can be a decent reliever at least like Chavez.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Meds was tearing it up in the rotation … until this whole thing where they started pushing back his starts and having him work out of the ’pen started up.
Lennox - July 31, 2010
I thought he looked pretty good last night...
one bad inning before he got plunked and had to sit (which coincidentally would have been a perfect time to call on Kenny if he hadn’t been atrophied).
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Have you not seen how Bobby uses his bullpen for the past few decades?
Lennox - July 31, 2010
Cameron would be a great pick up for the stretch run…
Hanson-Ace - July 31, 2010
I am reading on ESPN right now how tons of scouts are ripping the Oswalt deal – saying that Oswalt 2010 is not Oswalt from 5 years ago. I gotta say, first impressions for us look pretty good.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Good, let the Phils phuck up
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
..."Phillies not dancing after Oswalt's opening waltz "
This headline on MLB made me smile :-)
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
And to that I say
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Is that me and you…?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
No, just a happy monkey...
but if that’s where your imagination went, I don’t know how to respond.

Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010

Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010

Mornin' all.
A bit nervous about today. Wrenn has this way of surprising us doesn’t he?
Hope we don’t give up too much if a trade happens.

And, is there a gauge for when you officially “Proctor-Bomb” a thread? I just caught up on the post game one and hope I didn’t go that far. LOL
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
Hey there!
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
that's a lot of berries with your nuts
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Hehehe, it was a “mixed variety” in the package of frozen ones I bought. It’s really good.
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
I'm sure...
I love a bunch of berries. Nothing beats real fresh from mama’s farm.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
With the horrid heat this summer around here, the yields have been slim. Blueberries have done well, but other stuff suffering.
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
agreed...
but they grow different varieties. The strawberries and blackberries came in before the heat, so it was sooooooooo good. Store strawberries just don’t match up. Different variety used for size and preserving long term. Their kind are smaller, and don’t stay fresh long, but they are so, so sweet. It’s awesome like Joey Votto.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Within 24 hours isn't bad...
it’s 36-48+, and having several “I disagree” posts. You’re safe.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
hahaha
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Whew. Good to know. Certainly don’t need yet another reason to get on the “list”.
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
Carlos Lee for Prospects
Could the Braves acquire Carlos Lee for a collection of prospects? He seems like the right handed power bat we’ve been seeking. Lee’s having a down year, but he’s signed through 2012. Houston would probably have to provide some financial aid to complete the deal.
technobrave - July 31, 2010
His contract is atrocious. No thanks.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
It’s irrelevant anyway. He has a full NTC and has stated repeatedly he’s staying put. He wants no part of a trade.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Roy Oswalt was making the same kind of statements before being dealt to Philadelphia, a winning and contending team.
technobrave - July 31, 2010
I know his original deal was 6 years, $100 million. How much is left to be paid?
technobrave - July 31, 2010
a lot...
at least half of it.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Year Age Salary
2010 34 Houston Astros $19,000,000
2011 35 Houston Astros $18,500,000
2012 36 Houston Astros $18,500,000
Houston would have to pony up some serious financial aid. I didn’t realize Lee was in his mid-thirties either.
technobrave - July 31, 2010
I would cry myself to sleep tonight.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
No thanks....
to Mike Cameron…why do we want an overrated OF who can’t stay healthy and isn’t very healthy, that is 37 years old?
Our best bet (for team reasons and most likely reason) is Marlon Byrd. He’d be great here. Put him in the #2 hole.
And as I said earlier, if Prado is out for a while, we are going to get Kelly Johnson. Not sources, but I can definitely see making that happen.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
If anything, Cameron is an UNDERATED OF. Granted, he has health issues, but he still hits 20-25 HRs every year, plays well-above-average defense and gets on base at a good clip. He would be an immediate upgrade to anything we have, and is a better option to anything allegedly out on the market right now.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I'll grant you one thing, ...
you stay loyal with your memes. KJ, Cameron, etc.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I was convinced by others on Cameron. I wasn’t a big fan of him at first, but after stepping back and looking at it, he makes tons of sense, or did make tons of sense at that time.
And KJ is a good ballplayer. And he hit another HR last night – on the road, in Citi field of all places.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Just sayin...
once an idea gets in your head, it digs in deep.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
It’s because I am Irish.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Kettle's new name, Red...
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
But, seriously, I didn’t do it.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Sorry...
but he hasn’t shown much when’s he’s healthy this year.
According to fangraphs, his UZR rating is -8.0 this year. Only 4 homers in 48 games, and his OBP is .328. NO thanks
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
UZR for 1 year is like batting average for 1 game.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I'd rather have Melky and Gregor ...
for the rest of the year than Mike Cameron. We aren’t that desperate. His defense is down (you can tell by watching), his offense has been bad this year, and he’s had problems staying healthy. There would be no point in giving up a prospect at all.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
No No No No 4 HR’s 15 RBI’s. I wouldn’t say thats 20-25 hr’s every year unless he goes on a tear
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
Well, of course, he has to actually play to, you know, hit HRs.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
And he to be healthy to actually play, you know
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Right. But, he is healthy now, right? I honestly don’t know.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
He's playing, but not exactly healthy...
yahoo
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I'm hoping Prado's inconclusive x-rays last night were because he was swollen from the trauma.
Praying today brings clarity and it’s not broken and he will be fine once we’re back at the Ted.
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
Same here...
he’s been MVP for us, and deserves to be top 5 in the NL voting as of right now.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Another question:
Are we sure Glausosaur is going to get back on track? Seriously, I’m getting worried. He hasn’t shown anything in a month. I hope he gets it back together.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
I think, like HeyJude has mentioned before, that he’s hurt and is trying to play through some pain.
A few days off (even 15) just might bring us the old Troy back for the final stretch.
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
How about a full platoon for a while?
A Hinske/Glaus platoon at first might do them both some good, eh?
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
If we get an OF.......
i’m for that. But if not, we have to use Hinske for LF’s in platoon.
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
Not really, Matty D can play full time in LF for a couple of weeks, or you can just platoon him with Blanco if you really don’t think he can handle RHP like he did last year …
Lennox - July 31, 2010
THIS
Diaz has shown he’s not bad if playing daily, see last year.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Absolutely!
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
Just let Glaus sit for two weeks...
see Heyward, etc. That kind of rest can really do good. And if he’s healthy after a week and a half, he can rehab to get back going and come on strong from day 15. Find one stretch with an off day or two to let him miss as few games as possible. Unfortunately with Gonzalez and Prado and everyone else going down, we can’t afford it.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
PS
This is like the worst time to have to sit starters for extended periods of time in order to get healthy.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
im new
and was wondering who we were more likely to trade for
TS BOBCAT - July 31, 2010
Cody Ross
tears
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
EDIT - homonym fail
That would be “tears” as in water from the ducts in your eyes as opposed to how Heyward tears the cover off the ball.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Pujols.
OK, seriously, the most likely candidates seem to be Cody Ross, Mike Cameron, Jacoby Ellsbury, and just maybe Marlon Byrd or Luke Scott. Though there’s an equal chance that we trade for No Body.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
is No Body a righty?
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Bats: S. Throws: S. And when he hits homers, doves fly out of his ass.

TONS of good reading up there too ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
NCChopper - July 31, 2010
Maybe we can see what Freeman has....
and put Glaus on the DL. We really, really need him to get healthy for the stretch run
ZC1 - July 31, 2010
McLouth, KK, and Lowe for Lester and Ellsbury
Glaus for Pujols
World Series here we come.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
Next stop, Never land!
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Yay!
Heyward will fly us there.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
I topped that the other day...
McLouth, Lowe, and Noboa for Utley, Halladay, and Werth.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Hah
Nice.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
IDK. I think Noboa is untouchable.

MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Am I the onle one that wants McCutchen?
TCfromDubVee - July 31, 2010
i want McCutchen definatley but will the pirates trade him?
TS BOBCAT - July 31, 2010
i'm dreaming, just reaffirming i'm not the only one
TCfromDubVee - July 31, 2010
No. EVERYBODY wants McCutchen – everybody from every team.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Would you give up Jurrjens and Teheran for him?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Yes.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
no
JJ, mclouth, a minor league arm not teheran, minor, or delgado
TCfromDubVee - July 31, 2010
So, to get a top notch CF (a big need, btw) who is under control for years and is making league minimum, you would not give up one of 5 top quality starting pitcher prospects???
This is classic over-valuing of your prospects. We have depth. Depth does us no good if we don’t dive every now and then.
The trade you propose is a rip-off of epic proportions.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
I would do one of JT/AZ/JJ
plus Minor, Melky (no way they take McLouth back), and any two positions prospects they want aside from that SS we got earlier this year.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Who is AZ?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Vizcaino
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
That would be AV…right?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
YOU’RE the Assman???
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Que?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Seinfeld reference. My brain got the “ass” sound from reading AZ, and I can’t help myself. I spew Seinfeld references At every available opportunity because I am the master of my domain.
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
hahaha. I am not a fan of the show – and I am about the only person I know of that is not.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Oh. Then perhaps I should tell you that “master of my domain” is also a Seinfeld reference. Pelican?
J-Freak - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Pelican.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
i see
i’m just being stingy
TCfromDubVee - July 31, 2010
Nope.
But you might be the only one who thinks:
A: The Pirates would be willing to trade him
B: The asking price wouldn’t be:
JT
JJ
Hanson
Heyward
Freeman
and your firstborn child.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
another reason to hate that city!
TCfromDubVee - July 31, 2010
Just you. I’ve heard the Pirates tried to just give him to us, but Wren laughed in their faces.
Lennox - July 31, 2010
What's his OBP?
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
.363
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Not too shabby. Probably could stand to walk more, because I imagine he gets quite a few infield hits.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
and that's pretty consistant for a one-and-a-half-year player.
Put up .365 last year.
Has 42 BBs this year.
Heyward has 51, to put that in perspective.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Very nice.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010

Having a healthy Heyward back in the lineup was like Frank Wren making a trade for Pujols. I love that big 20 year old kid. :-)
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
Dear Prado
You can use my pinky! I’ll cut it off and give it to you.
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Two questions...
what are the Yankees offering for Berkman?
And would you include Hanson in a package for Braun or McCutcheon? I think I would, depending on who else had to go with them on either side. I love Big Red, but he has had his struggles and little blips on the screen. Plus it’s not like we lack high upside young arms, and we do lack an impact OF bat from the right side.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
That was a done deal, just not officially announced.
I would include Hanson in a package for either of those two guys, but not another one of our front -line prospects.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Probably not for McCutchen.
I’m not sure why.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I'd consider it if it was one of the lower level...
I think Lopez has a lot of work to do, and Vizcaino’s injuries worry me. Not a Hanson and Minor/Delgado/Teheran, but maybe another.
And I know, just wondering what the Astros are getting as I haven’t seen that anywhere. Just that they are paying a good bit of Berkman’s deal (Ed Wade may now be passing Minaya and Moore as the most inept GM. He gives up both veterans, AND eats a lot of salary, AND doesn’t get any good prospects for them, that’s triple fail

Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
this pic doesn't really make sense in this context
but ok
atl192485 - July 31, 2010
Ed Wade had a triple fail...
1) Dealing the faces of his franchise
2) Paying their salaries
3) not getting any good prospects for them
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
yea i get that
but the triple fail in the pic is clearly talking about something else

Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
How come all of the selling teams are getting hosed on deals?
Pavy848 - July 31, 2010
Buyer’s market?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
D-Backs got a really good deal for Edwin Jackson
But mainly, I think it’s the no-trade clauses. A lot of players being moved aren’t going for the best packages since they have to approach their end destinations.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
I thought Ryan Doumit was their C
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
He was
He has abismal defense, and his bat is ok. I think they may be trying to move Doumit, but they don’t want him to be their starter anymore. Reports say he’ll be splitting playing time all over the place.
I’d gladly take Garrett Jones though. Put Heyward in CF and let Jones play RF.

atl192485 - July 31, 2010
Man I'm really hoping to hear something like this
Brewers get:
Jair Jurrjens – SP
Melky Cabrera – OF
Randall Delgado – SP
Jordan Schafer – OF
Braves get:
Ryan Braun – OF
Jay212033 - July 31, 2010
that would be legit. I think thats realistic
Texastriplecrown - July 31, 2010
but who would fill his spot in the rotation then? KK?
the cow - July 31, 2010
Or Minor
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
One of our 7 or 8 SPs.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010

We have a number of guys who could step in and do the job.
Jay212033 - July 31, 2010

And then get hung up on.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010

Jay212033 - July 31, 2010
yeah i know
overly optimistic…
hawves - July 31, 2010
like it
personally of our pitchers I am most willing to see jj go. Delgado would be tough to lose. I’d rather do something like vizcaino and Hoover in place of Randall.
blindsided789 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
You have to give to get
And if we could get a bat like Braun i’d make that deal in a heartbeat. Teams would shy away from Vizcaino right now because of the injury issues and Hoover is an average spec nothing special maybe a 4/5 starter but more than likely a RP.
Jay212033 - July 31, 2010
yeah I know
that’s more wishing than anything. vizcaino is still a good prospect even with the issues, although we have no idea how serious they might be. Hoover is more filler to make up the difference between Delgado and viz. maybe there would be someone else we could put in there too to make up the difference. I’m just a huge Delgado fan and I would hate to lose him.
blindsided789 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
dang
i
lovehate time differences. I want to see a new CF in a Braves uni when i get up tommorrow.hawves - July 31, 2010
Wren is a FANTASTIC GM????
That’s the kind of thinking I would have expected on the official boards rather than here. I guess my definition of “fantastic” is a little different than yours. Number of playoff appearances by the Braves since the “Wren era” – ZERO. I would call a Wren an average GM. Nobody is perfect, but honestly would a “fantastic” GM do the following?
1) Sign Lowe to a contract so large that it would weigh the team down like an boat anchor, forcing them to trade a younger and better pitcher to save money.
2) Sign Kawakami to a 3 year deal. I really like Kawakami, but as much as it pains me to say it, he’s not been worth the money he gets.
3) Trade Teixeira for peanuts to Los Angeles. Granted he’s not the idiot who traded the future to rent Teixeira, but he got nothing in return for him.
4) Trade for McLouth and Church.
I expect no trades by Wren. I think we’re stuck with what we have right now. Remember this is the same “fantastic” GM who failed last year to release Greg Norton when it became clear that Cox was never going to stop using him. So I don’t expect the kind of thinking from Wren that it takes to field a winning team this year. He’ll stick with what they have because he’s terrified of making a bad deal. Honestly given his track record we might really be better off that way.
Zontar - July 31, 2010
Where’s the fail graphic? Or better yet, the Jesus facepalm?
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Sorry, I had to do it.... What about....?
1. Trading Edgar Renteria to the Tigers for JJ and Gorkys. We all know how fantastic JJ has been, how mediocre Renteria was in Detroit, and then Gorkys….
2. Trading Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke to the Pirates for Nate McLouth. Gorkys was flipped, Morton has been a wash, and no one has heard from Locke. Yes, McLouth is having a down season, but this trade did not cost us any prospects and Nate could turn it around and have an incredible rest of the season (already with two HRs in his AAA starts).
3. Trading Teixeira for essentially Adam LaRoche. Cleaning up the mess left by JS, FW gave us one of the most productive hitters in last season’s second half.
4. Trading Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge and two other prospects to the White Sox for Javy Vazquez. Javy was without question the best pitcher on the staff last year.
5. Trading Jose Ascanio for Omar Infante and Will Ohman. Ohman was a decent LHRP for us, and just look at ALL-STAR Infante now ;)
6. Addition by subtraction in shipping Francouer to the Muts (I bet they now regret that one…) for Church who could easily be non-tendered with no PR problems.
I beat you, 6 – 4.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
I have no problems with Wren, but...
Realistically, JS was the guy who put (1) and (5) together, but I suppose Wren can share in some of the credit
(2) is looking like a horrible deal
As atrocious as our outfield has been, Francoeur would have probably been an asset to us this year as sad as that sounds. Not that Church ever did anything anyway.
Really picking up Javy (4) was the only move on this list that looks good in retrospect.
And we could probably add a few more bad moves to his list, like non-tendering Kelly Johnson.
DCP916 - July 31, 2010
yeah, obtaining Jurrgens was not good at all.
fandave - July 31, 2010
No way in hell Frenchy makes our offense better this season.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
(2) Horrible in what way?? We didn’t give up anything of value to get him. And he was good for us last year. Yeah, he’s been terrible this year…but we got more of out McLouth than the 3 guys the Pirates got from us.
dunnytwogloves - July 31, 2010
Think of the salary. He makes $5M this year, $7M next year and has a $10.5M option (LOL) in 2012 that will cost us $1.25M to get rid of. That’s a good chunk of money flushed completely down the drain, that could have been put to better use. We are under relatively tight financial constraints and deals like McClouth, KK and Lowe eating up 30% of our payroll over a three year window is really hurting us.
(I left out Chipper because he’s earned the right to be overpaid for this club)
You can’t ignore money when assessing a GM. That’s one of their biggest responsibilities – managing the payroll. Talent evaluation has more to do with the scouts.
DCP916 - July 31, 2010
And if you say you saw him becoming what he is now
then you’re a liar. 20/20 hindsight is lovely, but you are a liar if you say that trade looked bad at the time, adding a decent CF where we needed one, for a starter who’d never play, a CF who can’t hit in AA, and an A ball arm that had stalled out and was looking like shit.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Of course I didn't see it
I was a little lukewarm on the move, but I figured he would at least be a decent acquisition. I had no complaints.
But I don’t get paid millions of dollars a year to make these decisions. Wren does, so he’s not above scrutiny and criticism far beyond what we hold the casual message board fan to.
I can’t hit a 90 mph slider either in case anybody wants to jump on me for trashing Nate.
DCP916 - July 31, 2010
At worst 2 is a wash.
Pavy848 - July 31, 2010
A fantastic GM would take a 75-win team and turn them into a 90+ win team within a year or two without selling the future for the present.
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Why post deals that haven't totally worked out
Why not post all the good deals as well that Wren has made.

we can send them KK plus a prospect, maybe a reliever too.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010

Cardinals are close to a Jake Westbrook trade.

Not sure he can play Center….but i’m sure we could find a way to make it work.
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
He can play CF...
…but I’m still not sure if he’s the type of player we need.
Granted, a far better option than Ross.
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
Under team control through next year
So that’s a positive, he wouldn’t just be a rental. But then again, I hate the idea of trading for a RF from the Cardinals for a pitching prospects…..the curse of Adam Wainwright
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Nevermind
Scratch that idea, he’s going to the Padres sounds like
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Ludwick to Padres
pretty much a done deal, guess that is out

BlueVol03 - July 31, 2010
Padres out of deal
Joel Sherman reported that it’s just a 2 team deal b/t the Cards and Indians, Padres fell out of the deal apparently.
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Now he's saying
Padres are still in
BigG1392 - July 31, 2010
Also I remember Braves were in talks w/ KC for Greinke, maybe the 08 off season as well for Frenchy and a couple mid prospects but both teams backed out. Braves thought Frenchy would have a break out season and Royals thought the same. Royals were right, braves wrong
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010

KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
When you have a shot at the playoffs in your site, you take a chance. You don’t wait for some theoretical point in time to hope all your cards are in line. This is their chance.
dunnytwogloves - July 31, 2010
Difference btw first place and last place. Since last years all star break they have one of the best records in the league. They have great pitcher and good defense, now they are adding pieces on offense. Sounds like a pretty winnable strategy to me.

justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
the thing is
We could have. We can match and beat the deals for almost any team out there and I have a feeling Frank Wren is more of a rebuilding mindset than win now and doesnt realize that we can trade a few guys and still rebuild.

Than too free an loose. I certainly don’t want to give away Vizcaino, Teheran, Delgado, Freeman, or Minor away on the cheap. Any of those guy needs to bring a solid return.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
On the cheap, no...
but I’d damn sure be willing to send a package of a major league starter plus prospects for a significant young OF bat.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Who exactly like that is available?
The closest I can think of to someone actually rumored to be traded is Matt Kemp. Now it seems like he was never really available.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
only name out there that fits that description is BJ Upton
and he’s underperforming and seems to have all sorts of baggage surrounding him
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Nick Markakis
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
I can't find anything on MBLTR suggesting he's available
And considering that Baltimore gave him a big long-term deal last offseason, I don’t think they’re quite ready to part ways.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
I posted the link a couple of days ago
MacPhail came out and said that “no player is untouchable” when asked about possible trades.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
I posted the link a couple of days ago
MacPhail came out and said that “no player is untouchable” when asked about possible trades.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
which is why we go for the other upton, of course!
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
You mean being openly shopped?
Probably no one. If by available you mean would another GM possibly pull a trigger if we offered Hanson/Jurrjens/Medlen + Delgado/Minor/Vizcaino + a couple other lesser prospects? A lot more.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
So, you're just speculating
You think there’s probably a lot of great young players who fit our needs who are available at the right price, but you can’t name any actual examples.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Really?
cause every name possible is floated in a trade deadline?
No, I’m not Frank Wren and aware of what’s going on. But yes, trades happen that were unexpected. I never said what you put there, but I do believe very few players are truly untouchable. And if we were willing to include some of our prized young pitching you’d probably see a lot more willing to deal than if we aren’t.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
thats the thing
thats upsetting me. Seeing players that werent being openly shopped that fit our needs getting traded. Like Ludwick.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
thank you drum...
at least you get the point, Bronn is just being difficult.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
i dont either
but i also would pay up for a quality player like a Markakis. I dont think Wren has gotten that bold yet but we will see.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
Or for Berkman
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I think it is becoming pretty apparent
we are standing pat..
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
and its pissing me off
I have ultimate faith in this team however since May when McLouth was doing nothing we knew we needed a CF. With the team willing to my Heyward to CF i figured we would make a move for a RF.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
I would not be surprised if we did nothing today.
Especially if what the sellers like the Natinals and Jays are asking for. I could see us making a trade in a couple of weeks if Glaus is still struggling and we need another bat. I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we get LaRoche from AZ in late August
leedawg - July 31, 2010
trade deadline?
i guess in ur league that doesnt apply
MacsGlasses - July 31, 2010
waiver deadline is at the end of august
deals can still be made, they just have to go through waivers first. Guys on MLB Network earlier this week said they expect a decent amount of deals in August because teams don’t have the money to take on payroll by blocking a waiver trade
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Trades happen after the deadline all the time.
Rios, Alex – exhibit A
justincredubil02 - July 31, 2010
Rios was not a trade
Blue Jays just gave him up
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
i doubt we take on a contract like that.
I would love for someone to scoop up Derek Lowe though
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
this
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
yeah
I doubt LaRoche clears waivers in August
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I doubt
LaRoche is even still with the Diamondbacks by the end of the day
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
It's certainly possible he's dealt
I just haven’t heard his name come up yet.
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Its almost a no brainer
Nats are being stupid about Dunn so im sure if teams see that they cant work out a deal they will go with the next best option. Im surprised he isnt gone already
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
I could see the Raysand White Sox going after LaRoche for sure
but after those 2 teams, there really isn’t anyone out there still in a race with a need for a 1st baseman
leedawg - July 31, 2010
*rays and
leedawg - July 31, 2010
giants maybe?
Angels could feel bold.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
Read somewhere that the Giants like having Aubrey Huff in their lineup
as weird as that sounds….
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Lineup:
Infante
Heyward
Chipper
Mac
Glaus
Hinske
Gonzalez
Melky
Jurrjens
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
I like it.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
EFFFF
so Prado im guessing is really hurting
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
It’s the day after, plus day game after night, even if he was fine, im sure stiffness would still force Bobby to sit him, so I’m not going to jump to any conclusion just yet
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
did they
give any injury update?
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
no being quiet
I m guessing if he was healthy they would have came out already
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
7-9 is a blackhole
but I guess it is on most teams
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I wouldn’t call Melky a black hole, exactly.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I guess
if he can keep hitting those bloop doubles, we have to look on the positive right
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
see above, I already posted it
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Sorry, i couldn’t find it in the 509 comments above.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
I'll forgive you
but just this once
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
lazy.
fandave - July 31, 2010
come on Wren
just trade for Adam again
Erihury - July 31, 2010
Should never have gotten rid of him in the first place. Great player, great in the clubhouse. I don’t understand this organization
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Which is why you’re not the GM.
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
NEWS!
per David O’Brien: Prado has ‘’stable avulsion fracture’’ of right pinky, no DL decisioon yet. Might be only 7-10 days
Kobe:The Legend - July 31, 2010
ugh
thankfully we have Infante, but 7-10 days without Prado could be difficult
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
PRADO UPDATE
Prado has “stable avulsion fracture” of right pinky. No DL decision yet. Out for at most likely 7-10 days
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
A week to 10 days?
We have NY and the Giants this week. Fuck.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
We can stick an All Star there...
DL him and get him healthy. September is more important than a week
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
We'll survive.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybXrrTX3LuI
Bronn - July 31, 2010
I know we will survive
however its just not what we need in a play off race. Thats all.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
At most means it could be less then a week right?
Erin6 - July 31, 2010
I guess the news could have been worse
but for Prado to not be in the lineup (he is such a gamer), you know it must be relatively serious
LEastCoastBears - July 31, 2010
They are playing Sarah McLachlan at Minute Maid park?
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
lolollol
I was about to ask the same thing.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
and the Yankees lineup is disgusting
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Crazy what $350MM can do for your lineup.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
Hahaha
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
L Gardner
R Jeter
L Cano
R ARod
S Tex
S Berkman
S Posada
S Swisher
L Granderson
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Is that the AL’s starting all-star roster?
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
8th spot Swisher!? I wish we had Swisher in the 5th or even 4th spot
Kobe:The Legend - July 31, 2010
who would you hit him over?
and with Cervelli, Nick Johnson, Marcus Thames, Austin Kearns, etc on the bench, Girardi can tinker
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Bat him second and move Jeter down.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
i dunno about that
I figured the Yankees would go
Jeter
Cano
Tex
A-Rod
Swisher
Posada
Berkman
Granderson
Gardner
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
no, I’m saying that the Yankees are so stacked that they have Swisher batting 8th who in other teams can bat 4th.
Kobe:The Legend - July 31, 2010
and he's been hitting like crazy this year
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
wait
Tex is hitting 5th?
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
no, tex hits 3rd
that’s why he leads the AL in runs scored
leedawg - July 31, 2010
whatever...
basically it’s a loaded lineup top to bottom
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Am I the only one weirded out by Richard Justice talking with Sarah McLaughlan’s “Angel” in the background? It’s like a charity commercial about baseball players.
“Only 70,000 a day will feed Alex Rodriguez…….”
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
see one spot above
you are not alone
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010

PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
It was a there team deal
to send out Ludwick, the Cardinals needed Westbrook and Greenwood.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
im saying
if we had been that third team.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
how much of an improvement would Ludwick be over Matty D?
Fatvirus - July 31, 2010
we should
just trade for Ryan Langerhans
Erihury - July 31, 2010
YES!!!!!!!!!!!
He’s the missing peice
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Dont joke
Ryan Langerhans 0.4 WAR
Melky Cabrera 0.5 WAR

stable avulsion fracture? any doctors in the house?

avulsion fracture is what the injury Kobe had this season, is at the tip of the finger.
Kobe:The Legend - July 31, 2010
what was the Lebron Injury
Elbow Phantom South Beach Bursitis
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
that was Chris Bosh's injury

because he is Kobe, he was playing with a lot of swelling and he said that his finger was just ugly as hell, and now because of not having surgery, possibly he can’t repair it.

O Google is your friend
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I googled it. The first three items were Martin Prado related. But apparently a stable fracture shouldnt be too harmful cause the bone’s still in more or less a good position.
Wikipedia:
“An avulsion fracture is a bone fracture which occurs when a fragment of bone tears away from the main mass of bone as a result of physical trauma.”
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
Ryan Church now a Diamondback.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I don't understand that trade at all
leedawg - July 31, 2010
It’s the Pirates.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
for either team
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010

No joke
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Anyone know how much?
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
It's all gone now

leedawg - July 31, 2010

Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Frank Wren be pimpin. Literally.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I have a question which I still don't understand... why is everyone ok with losing JJ?
He is on current form and career performances our second best pitcher.
SuperHeyward - July 31, 2010
Because his value is so high, but he's not even our 2nd best pitcher.
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010
You could make an argument that he is...
advanced stats aside, he’s been damn good since day 1, and our best pitcher over the last 3 years.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Yea.
Hudson and Hanson are our top 2 pitchers IMO, though.
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010
Hanson sure ain't pitched like it
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
JJ is by far our 2nd best pitcher. Big Red is not doing good this year and is our 3rd best pitcher. meds might be our 4th and Lowe the 5th best
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
We're not...
but if you want to get a big time bat like say a McCutch or Braun, it’ll take someone like Hanson or Jurrjens to make it happen.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
True and Hanson assuming he works the kinks out has the better future... I just like our pitchers too much minus Lowe...
SuperHeyward - July 31, 2010
Would you rather
A) Stand pat and keep our talented arms
B) Trade for a power bat like Bautista but have to give up a lot of the farm to get him
C) Get a lower tier guy like Willigham
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
I don't consider Willingham "lower tier" to Bautista
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I think
Willingham is better fit for us
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
everything I'm hearing says that
the Nats are asking for almost as much as the Jays are for Bautista
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Damn, where are you hearing this?
ATLforlife - July 31, 2010
Stand pat. No one out there puts Atlanta over the top.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I'd rather not touch Jose Bautista with a ten foot pole.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Buster said last night on BBTN that with the adjustments Bautista has made at the plate, he doesn’t see this as a fluke year for him
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Ah yes, Buster Olney, the "Expert"
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Actually....it was Buster Posey
He fills in on BBTN on the side, since he can apparently he is all that is baseball
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Show us on the doll where the bad man touched you…………
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
His HRs are more legit than those of Alex Gonzalez
however, his price and his hitting style is probably not a good fit for the Braves
I for one hopes the Braves to just stand pat
LEastCoastBears - July 31, 2010
who would want

no way

already
been screwed once
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
thats the problem
people think we would have to give up the farm.

drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
id do that for braun or mccutchen

HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
And MLBN is talking about the Brewers needing pitching...
We got it, get me Braun damn it! Jurrjens, Hanson, or Medlen, plus ’spects!
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
No way they trade Braun
We dont have a position player besides Heyward they would be interested in
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
They got position players...
need pitchers. They don’t have a shortage of good bat, no glove guys that could fill in LF.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
right
we can give them Cody Johnson. He fits their mold of all bat no glove
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
Pretty sure
They would want a major league bat to replace Braun and a top tier pitching prospect
Probably in their eyes it would take
Heyward + Hanson/Medlen + prospects
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
The reason so expensive you ask?
Braun is signed long term on the cheap
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I disagree on the need for a bat...
as said above, they have plenty, and lack pitching. I’m sure they’d prefer a young, front line starter to a bat with McGehee, Fielder, Weeks, Gamel, Lawrie, etc around.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
You think they'd trade their best hitter
And still have plenty of hitting?
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Are you reading impaired, that's exactly what I said...
Lorenzo Cain, Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, Casey McGehee, Rickie Weeks, Brett Lawrie, Mat Gamel, hitting isn’t their problem.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I really can't agree
I mean, Braun is locked up long term. Hart and Fielder are free agents after next season. McGeehee is solid, but he’s not like some great hitter. Mat Gamel hasn’t really shown anything, yet, but he might good in a couple of years (but probably not next year, for their bubble with Prince Fielder and Corey Hart). Lorenzo Cain isn’t that great. He was like, their 8th best prospect going into this year. He’s an average corner outfield bat.
I don’t think Braun is leaving town at all, not this year or next.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Neither do I, but if they want to add elite pitching,...
I don’t see Hart or Fielder bringing that back. They’ve got capable bats, and no arms. Like us with a ton of arms but not many bats.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
They'd be better off moving Hart or Fielder with prospects.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
But no one is paying what they want for Hart...
so that’s a no go, and Fielder doesn’t seem all that desired either. That’s like saying we’d be better off moving Lowe than Javy Vazquez. Well no shit sherlock, but nobody is biting.

Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
absolutely not
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
oh wait
just saw the OR
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010
If they wont give up Hart, no way they give up braun or Fielder
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
If they got back good pitching, they'd give Hart...
just no one was paying that price. So up the price a bit, and demand Braun. Doubtful, but ya try.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
They’re not giving up Braun for the last time

cuz berkman is still an all-star caliber player
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
The Astros got eye raped on these deals. That, for Berkman? For real? If they sent money too, Ed Wade is now officially the worst GM in baseball.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Berkman and Oswalt
put him in a bad situation, they vetoed all trades
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
And you know this how?
I doubt Berkman said yankees or nothing, and Oswalt wanted St Louis, not Phily
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
pretty sure
Berkman vetoed CHW as well
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
This
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
Berkman is washed up
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
But the Astros practically gave him away. I would like him for the deal they gave him away for.
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
Alright....I'm getting mad.
I wish MLBTR would at least tell me that the Braves aren’t doing anything. That way I can enjoy my Saturday.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
Would it help if I told you that?
Because the Braves aren’t doing anything.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
Mitch Jones traded for cash.
P.S. Cue this pic:

HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
True
But sometimes its better to be really bad…
That way you can move on
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Better to be a Cubs fan than a Royals or Pirates fan.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
id like to be a pirates fan
must be fun getting prospects, then developing them and making them amazing for 2 years, then trading them to do it all over again
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
Meanwhile never reaching respectability.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Respectfully disagree
At least Royals and Pirates fans KNOW they are going to suck every year. Cubs fans think they’re winning it all and that the next year is “Their year”
I couldn’t live with that emotional beating year after year
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
But Cubs fans actually can hope that they’ll be good. Royals and Pirates fans are merely wasting their emotional effort even rooting for teams that just never come close to having a shot.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Good point
But I live in eastern Iowa, and every single person is a Cubs fan. April is horrible because they are annoying as shit. But it’s nice when July rolls around, much quieter
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Could be worse. Could live in baltimore.
…sigh.

Has
anyone seen that new movie Inception yet? I was thinking of going to see it and was wondering what you guys think of it. I’m hearing a lot of good things about it. Also I don’t think the Braves are trading for anyone. If we do trade I would be shocked.
AlabamaTitans2009 - July 31, 2010
ive been told by like 10 ppl that its the greatest movie ever made, havent heard 1 bad thing about it
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
Saw it. It sucked.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Alabama, This response was not from a human. The movie is awesome. See it twice.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Sorry, I don’t like sci-fi all that much.
I also despise Leonardo DiCaprio.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
BUT HES SEXY FOR A GUY! Right?
He was legit in Shutter Island, though. Can’t fault him there.

Pavy848 - July 31, 2010
He is the best part of that one
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
He's done good movies for me...
Departed, Shutter Island was all right, Catch Me if You Can I loved, Inception is good, he’s had his share.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Disagree.
I saw it twice. It was awesome both times. Very unique film/concept. Worth a view at some point. At least it isn’t in 3D.
Pavy848 - July 31, 2010
It’s great
HeywardFTW! - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Worth the money

Yeah,
most of my friends who have seen it say they are going to see it a second time so it must be pretty good. lol
AlabamaTitans2009 - July 31, 2010
Seems to me that the sellers seem to be asking for more and more each year. Throw in salary constraints, and It wouldn’t surprise me to see the non-waiver deadline become irrelevant.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Except for the Astros :)
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
Haha

Mac vs. Arroyo – 4 for 12 (.333) 2 HR’s
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
Question
Is Mike Minor untouchable? I say yes and will probably get roasted. He is dominating AAA and the Braves desperately need a lefty starter. He is probably the Braves future #3
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
pretty sure he's not untouchable
it’d take a lot to get him, but hes viewed as our #4 pitching prospect behind teheran, vizcaino, and delgado
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
If we make a big deal
he will be the centerpiece
bravesforever16 - July 31, 2010
No I agree
I’m not saying we should never move him, but I see him as the quickest way to kick Derek Lowe out of the rotation. Thus, I like him…alot
Zeus12888 - July 31, 2010
Depends on the return, really.
If the Dodgers called and said “Matt Kemp for Mike Minor straight up”, would you make that deal?
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
yup
Zeus12888 - July 31, 2010
Absolutely, where do I sign
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010

Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
you mean like...
Kimbrel, Resop, Marek, EOF when he’s healthy, Ortegano, Medlen in the post season. Yeah, adding a bullpen arm is pointless imo.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I would agree. Why deal for a bullpen arm when there’s not guarantee Bobby would even use him?
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
You can never have too many. I’m not saying go give up a top prospect for Matt Capps or anything…just another 6th/7th inning option.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
Aka Resop,
or Kimbrel, or, well shit you can read above. We got those options. Hell dust of Kenny K and actually use his ass more than once a month. He showed last year he can be at least as effective as Chavez in the pen.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Yeah
As long as we have guys like Kimbrel in AAA, we really don’t need bullpen help.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
And Resop has to be up when his rehab ends,...
and there’s Proctor, among the others listed above. No need for bullpen help.

There’s no way that deal could ever bite us in the ass!!!
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
I don't think that it did
I mean, who exactly do we wish we still had from that deal? Just Andrus, and he’s not exactly tearing it up at the plate this year.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Feliz closing games out would be nice to have
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Do we really need him, though?
our bullpen has been excellent this year.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
yes, but Wags won't be here next year
Kimbrel may be fine if he can get a better command of the zone, but having Feliz in our pen instead of Chavez or KK would be an improvement
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Well
A lot of people would be an improvement over Chavez-we’ve got Kimbrel, Marek, and Gearrin in Gwinnett who probably all could do better.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Your point?
then stick him in AAA and see if he can be a starter, or would you really turn down that arm in the pen? He’d have made Saito or Wags unneeded, so save that money and reinvest it elsewhere (like LF).
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I'd take Andrus, Feliz, even Harrison or Salty as reserves...
or used in other deals.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I'm evaluating that deal after the fact
If we just traded them again later, we almost certainly would have never gotten a player as good as Teixeira. I’d say we maximized their trade value because, looking at the deal retroactively, Salty never had a place here (and right now wouldn’t have a roster spot), neither would Harrison. Feliz is a closer, and it’s fairly easy to replace that value in a variety of ways. Andrus is the one guy we’ll miss, long term, and three years later, we’re still not at the point where we’re really missing him.
Harrison and Salty soon lost all trade value, following this time period, so we really didn’t lose a great deal of value. The bad deal was trading Tex for Kotchman the following year.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
And Tex wasn't helpful to us...
so they might not have been “as good”, but certainly could have been more helpful.
While closers can be found, it’s nice to have one so you don’t have to look, especially one at the minimum, so that point is bullshit spin. And Harrison did not lose all trade value, he had some very good starts and could have become much better. You’re justifying and not being truthful. Take a way that deal, and a lot changes, so it’s pointless to debate now.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I just don't think people look fairly on that deal
just because we missed the playoffs. We got a great return for the trade, and people were clamoring for a move. We were in contention, we vastly improvement the biggest hole on the team, and we came up short in the running. That trade which has been the whipping boy of commenters around here really wasn’t that bad. None of those guys would be a key piece on this team, and most of them wouldn’t be rostered, so the effect it had on the franchise really isn’t that significant. It certainly didn’t set us back as much as people thought it would, at the time.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Is bullshit spin worthy of Washington. But whatever.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
You call it bullshit
And have no other counter-argument. Seriously, which guy from that deal would be a significant roster improvement?
Bronn - July 31, 2010
Andrus over Gonzalez is one...
Feliz over Saito for two.
And if Harrison is around and coming up, maybe we don’t splurge for KK or Lowe and just rock it with Vazquez. Saving even more money. But as said above, this discussion is masturbatory anyway. get your last word if you must, but my point is and always has been, we didn’t have the pitching to make a World Series, with or without Tex. So save the kids and reload later.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
I'd love it if you would actually attempt to make a case for those first two
Saito has a lower FIP than Feliz. In fact, the Braves have used 5 relievers with a lower FIP than Feliz this year (including Kimbrel, but SSS). As for Elvis Andrus…sure he made the all-star team, but he did so mostly because of defensive reputation. Alex Gonzalez is as good defensively as Andrus, according to the metrics, and Andrus is a below average hitter-WELL below average. In years to come, Andrus will be a better hitter, true, but he’s not a better hitter now than Yunel Escobar is. Even if I were willing to concede that Andrus is an upgrade at the SS position, if so, it’s a very very minor upgrade, and he certainly wouldn’t qualify as a key piece for this team.
You’re building a complete straw man argument with Harrison. He’s got a career 5.03 FIP. I doubt, going into 2009, FW would have felt happy enough having him around to avoiding giving Derek Lowe that big deal. He wouldn’t be in our current rotation, and with guys like Minor, Teheran, and Delgado pushing their way up the minors, he wouldn’t have a future spot with the Braves either.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
I don't consider FIP an absolute judge of pitching...
and both are cheaper. You are spinning an argument well, but you are being delusional if you are ignoring the value those players would have provided.
Andrus is cheaper, better speed on the base paths, better obp than Gonzalez, would have been on a slower development path here and made an Escobar trade not require a SS in return.
Feliz, in spite of pitching in the AL, has a better ERA+, lower WHIP, lower walk per 9 and lower hit per 9, is cheaper and would be more certain replacement for Wagner than anything else we got currently. Plus with the savings of those two over current options (not to mention the likely lack of KK or Lowe’s salary with Harrison slotted as a starter last year), we would have money to address other needs. But the trade was so long ago, neither one of us can say with any certain what the opportunity cost was of keeping those players instead of acquiring Tex.
But spin however you want if it makes you feel better.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
the Angels hosed us big time
leedawg - July 31, 2010
haha
where is the pelican
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
FLASHBACK. Ahhhhhhhhhhh Tex. We hardly knew ye.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
but we have Scott Thorman
Erihury - July 31, 2010
Great deal! there’s no way this can come back and bite us!
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
One of the shitty things about that deal was...
…that Tex actually played really well for us. The rest of the team just started sucking ass.
pancanbra - July 31, 2010
Renteria spraining his ankle in the 2nd game with Tex pretty much killed us. Esco was alright, but Edgar was a baller for us.
Scott Coleman - July 31, 2010
No, having Chuck James and a pack of crap as the 3-4-5 killed us, not Renteria getting hurt...
unless Edgar could pitch, Tex wasn’t the difference.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
We had no 3-4-5 starters and a piece meal bullpen
whether Tex played well was pointless. And the next year, we had Gregor Blanco leading off so wasted again.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
We were only down 3.5 games at that point
And even after that, we still had good results from Chuck James. And you’re really underrating how well the bullpen performed that year.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
I've looked at it, it did ok, but was still piecemeal...
Wickman crapped out and Soriano stepped up. Either way, we did not have the pitching to do the trick. Chuck James, really? That’s your 3 starter in the playoffs? Maybe as a 4 or 5, but if he’s your 3, then you’re fighting an uphill battle you won’t win.
No point in keeping this up, let’s just agree to disagree and move on.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
It only takes two good starters in the playoffs.
And besides, reaching it is the ultimate goal, because almost anything can happen in shorter series.
Bronn - July 31, 2010
According to Kevin Goldstein
we have absolutely no wiggle room financially. Which makes no sense to me considering we opened about 7-8 mil below last years pay roll and have had an increase in attendance.
If thats true then we really are screwed.
drumzalicious - July 31, 2010

HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
someone needs to buy the Hawks and Thrashers from the Atlanta Spirit
that’s one of the worst ownership groups in all of sports
leedawg - July 31, 2010
but they signed
Joe Johnson for 120 million
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
and as a result, the Thrashers will be at the salary floor next year
They’ll never spend more than 120 mil on salaries between the 2 teams. They’ll refuse to pay the luxury tax in basketball, and will never go over the midpoint of the salary cap in hockey so they can keep getting full revenue sharing checks each month… What a joke
leedawg - July 31, 2010
And on top of that...
minimum guys like Jason Collins and Josh Powell, good deal.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Hey, at least we're not the Cubs

We get it. You hate the trade. The bottom line is that Escobar was not producing for us at all. And he was obviously not well-liked in the clubhouse. Any production Gonzalez gives will be more than we got from Escobar. There is just no point in making crass comments about it over and over.

The one qualm I have is that the other top NL contenders all made deals that improved their clubs. You could say the Gonzalez trade did the same for us, but I just don’t think it was enough. That being said, the available names out there just don’t strike me as the kind of talent that carries a team deep into October.
I’m a bit torn on this. Yes, I’m concerned at the prospects for a pennant, but I’d hate the team to hand away future aces for no real guarantee.

that’s somewhat understandable.
I agree, we’ve got help in AAA already, but Bobby needs to use them.
Mr. Sanchez - July 31, 2010
Can Pujols pitch?
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Where is this Diaz and Ellsbury stuff coming from. A guy mentioned it on twitter too. Is there any truth to this???
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
If we are getting a reliever and a bat why isn’t there any talk on MLB network or anything?
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
Diaz
I’m sure several teams would love to have him. I would miss him though.
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
Lmao
I just texted my friend who is out working today, that we traded for FUGA…
Not sure if I can make up a good prospect that we gave up
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Delgado
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Schafer
sound right?
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
no way try
Freddie Freeman
Erihury - July 31, 2010
I paniced
and shot him Schafer, he was skeptical but believed it
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Schafer?
RichmondBraves - July 31, 2010
ding
He replied and I quote:
God fucking damn it, yea he has a better attitude than yunel right?
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
hahaha
Very nice.
RichmondBraves - July 31, 2010
doh
he is on to me
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010

tell him we got cash too!
RichmondBraves - July 31, 2010
haha
good idea
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
we also got Eithier
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Man...
I really want Ellsbury but I don’t want it to cost us Matty
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
even if the Red Sox wanted Matty
it would be Matty + prospect
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I can't imagine it would be a top prospect though
so that part doesn’t worry me
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
Diaz and Cash for Ellsbury!
leedawg - July 31, 2010
Cash is untouchable
We gave up M. Jones to get him
sexbobomb - July 31, 2010
lmao
I actually got a chuckle out of that one…
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
me too
dunnytwogloves - July 31, 2010
The report says that Cash can hit 350+AVG 40+ HR and 120+ RBI per season
and can play all the positions, include pitcher. His main pitch is a 98 mph fastball. He also throw Slider, Curveball, Change up, Sinker, Cutter, Screwball and KN.
joshant - July 31, 2010
Ellsbury is so much better than Diaz. Diaz can crush lefty’s but not so much the righty’s
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
MattyD
I would miss his attitude and hustle.
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
but we have Moylan
he will step up his clubhouse game
Erihury - July 31, 2010
You would love Ellsbury speed, defense and lead off abilities.
It would boost the whole line up. Prado gets more RBI chances at 2, Heyward gets more chances to drive in guys at 6. Then Heyward gets on base and Sea Bass does the rest
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
Also leaves us less vulnerable to LHP.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I'm sure I would
It just makes me sad to think about losing Matty. I’ll be pulling for anyone FW trades for though.
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
What do you guys think about Carlos Delgado, if Glaus goes to the DL?
Kobe:The Legend - July 31, 2010
Is he even in playing shape?
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
He could barely
move in winter ball, is he even in shape?
Brian. - July 31, 2010
it'd be interesting
I hear he is getting into playing shape again and willing to work his way up through the minors. Couldn’t hurt to try..
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
Doesn't sound realistic that he can help in 2010 then
sexbobomb - July 31, 2010
pass
leedawg - July 31, 2010
We aren't in a position to experiment
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010

PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
Per: http://twitter.com/BrentSGambill
Ellsbury to the Braves not just rumors.
See? :)
Wren_and_Stimpy - July 31, 2010
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I could see
Ellsbury for Dunn, just cause they are in need of bullpen help
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
why would
the Red Sox make that trade?
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Cause they feel bad for us??
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
hopefully
haha
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Ellsbury 2009 stats- 8 HR’s 27 doubles 10 3B 60 RBI’s 70 freakin SB’s .301 average
PhuckthePhillies - July 31, 2010
he stole more bases than all the braves team

WHAT!?!
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Yankees getting Kerry Wood

we gonna trade for Votto at 3:57. trust me, I know these things
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile

As for #Braves trades, someone said it ain’t over till it’s over, folks. So I’ll just repeat that. Honestly, I’m told they’re working phones
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Something off the radar seems most likely, if anything happens.
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
How do the Yankees have any players at all in their farm system?
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
they dont
trade prospects, they take salaries
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Most of their deals over the past several years have included prospects.
Their farm system must be absolutely depleted by now.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
It doesn't look like
they’re even giving up prospects.
Brian. - July 31, 2010
They have the $
to just buy whatever they need when they need it. Ugh
HEYJUDE - July 31, 2010
Jeter is getting old, they just bought the fountain of youth, according to my sources
MBL1 - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Won’t Ponce de Leon be disappointed.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
FW probably made the Ellsbury rumor himself
just so everybody thinks he tried
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
Or Ellsbury did to make himself look wanted.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
hey I wanted him...
I’d been clamoring for him the last month…
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010

Daniel McCracken - July 31, 2010

Daniel McCracken - July 31, 2010
if they eat the contract
I would take him, legit lead-off guy, can play a ton of positions
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
We need to add pop. Figgins does not provide it.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
granted
but a legit lead off hitter would help, could drop Prado to 2nd…
move Heyward to a more RBI producing spot
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I don’t see Bobby moving him down the order, but if Figgins ends up happening, who knows?
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
of course
I mean if he is CHEAP

only if they eating most of his contract.

UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
can Figgins play the OF?
the infield is pretty much set unless Glaus or Prado go to the DL
Erihury - July 31, 2010
Prado probablly going to hit the 15 day DL
Figgins has played the OF when with the Angels
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I doubt he’d be worse than Hinske/Diaz.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Possible replacement for Chipper next year, though his bat at third doesn’t excite me.
And he was the Angels’ starting CF in 06. No idea if he could do it now. Useful player if he doesn’t cost much.

UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Can someone explain to me...
The whole financial “room” situation?
I dont know much about money and such in baseball, but i do know that Yankees have unlimited, but when we talk about Braves, its like they have a cap, per say.
Whats the deal?
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Owners set the budget
Liberty Media has the Braves on a very strict budget, so it’s almost as if the Braves have a cap, but that’s implemented by their ownership, not MLB
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
gotcha.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Liberty Media
is cheap and dont wanna waste money
My best guess
Erihury - July 31, 2010
just the internal limit the owners put on how much they're willing to spend
It’s rumored we have little to no payroll room left to make a significant move
leedawg - July 31, 2010
sigh.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
14 minutes left...

oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Looks like it….rumor mill is going into overdrive on Braves signings right now.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - July 31, 2010
Is Ankiel injureD?
steeeeezzzzzz - July 31, 2010
Its like Wren woke up, hung over
with his assistants yelling at him to make a move and he just goes to random teams and picks out random players.
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010
The Royals will get reliever Jesse Chavez and two minor leaguers in the trade.
Jose Rodriguez - July 31, 2010
PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS TRUE!
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
We gave up Gregor BLANCO, Chavez, and Collins..
NO!!!!!!
steeeeezzzzzz - July 31, 2010
NOT BLANCO!!! NO!!!
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Dude, you act like we gave up our top 3.
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010
Good deal
Do you really covet Blanco over Ankiel, and Chavez over Farnsworth?? Collins was thrown in to sweeten the deal, our pitching is so deep
KJDH2154 - July 31, 2010
an alright deal
no big trade there
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
The key to the deal for Kansas City was Tim Collins, a left-handed pitcher the Braves just got from the Blue Jays in the Yunel Escobar-Alex Gonzalez trade.
Jose Rodriguez - July 31, 2010
Will Ohman
traded to Marlins
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Blanco Chavez and Collins
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
I hate this trade.
But i’m a Blanco fanboy. And I like Collins cause he’s short.
RichmondBraves - July 31, 2010
Ankiel, Farnsworth!
HeywardFTW! - July 31, 2010 via mobile
Good news everyone!
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
I love this
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Me too. Get used to it, though.
You’ll be seeing this a lot more in the next couple months.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
Damn Im gonna miss Greg White.
BUT IS ANYONE WATCHING THE BRAVES RIGHT NOW??
steeeeezzzzzz - July 31, 2010
HITSSSSSSSS
BravesRaleigh - July 31, 2010
damnit I liked Blanco
bACEballstud - July 31, 2010
I'm actually really sad to lose Collins
other than that i like the trade…not that it will accomplish much, but it’s trying something without getting rid of big prospects
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
Collins
I’m a lil sad that Collins is leaving too.
deewill23 - July 31, 2010
Ive always liked Ankiel
As long as he doesnt have the mustache we win
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010
Can someone sum up the trades we've made so far?
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Jones for Cash
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
You win.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Is anyone really all that surprised that it was KC we dealt with? Does Wren know the phone number to any other GMs?
But yeah, we can always put Ankiel on the mound if we need to……..
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
LAWL. HAPPY LAWL!
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Figgins?????
kauf67 - July 31, 2010

oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Waiting to hear
I’ve been going back and forth between MLBTR and O’brien’s twitter
kauf67 - July 31, 2010
I am guessing it is dead
since we got Farnsworth from KC
UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
Probably
Because we got Ankiel. Farnsworth is irrelevant
kauf67 - July 31, 2010

oVecKid - July 31, 2010
ooops.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
No more Chavez!!!
deewill23 - July 31, 2010
best part of the deals.
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
We just made a few minor moves to back up Jones for cash
Tim Goad - July 31, 2010

UltimaParadox - July 31, 2010
I lol’d.
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010

Rick “Wild Thing Vaughn” Ankiel and Kyle “Bentley” Farnsworth…
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
2-0 braves. GOOD NEWS ALL AROUND!
oVecKid - July 31, 2010
Figgins and League sounded much better than
Ankiel and Farnsworth!
Jay212033 - July 31, 2010
Pro: No Chavez vulturing and/or sucking.
Con: Farnsworth is back.
Pro: Maybe a little extra pop in the OF
Con: Ankiel is cursed
Pro: More Futurama references
Con: Lose Greg White
UMDBHIK - July 31, 2010
And we acquired Cash's twin brother, Cash
Kudzu Kid - July 31, 2010
Did Ankiel admit ot hgh use a couple years ago?
tmc5837 - July 31, 2010

tmc5837 - July 31, 2010
