Erik Cordier picked up his organization-leading 9th win tonight, striking out 10 while allowing just 1 earned run over 7 innings.

Gwinnett 13, Rochester 6

  • N. McLouth 2-5, HR (2), RBI, .278 AVG
  • F. Freeman 2-3, 3 RBI, 2 BB, .293 AVG
  • B. Canizares 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, .320 AVG
  • M. Young 3-5, 3B, .300 AVG
  • W. Timmons 2-5, 2B, RBI, .294 AVG
  • B. Hicks 2-5, .215 AVG
  • JC Boscan 2-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, BB, .242 AVG
  • J. Ortegano 4.1 IP, 3 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 6.55 ERA
  • C. Gearrin 1.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 3.90 ERA
  • The G-Braves 3-4 hitters, Freddie Freeman and Barbaro Canizares, combined to go 5-8 with a double, 2 walks, and 6 RBI. The whole offense was on, as the team pouned out 17 hits. Nate McLouth hasn't had any success in the Majors, but he managed to pick up a pair of hits and an RBI tonight. The team's 8-9 hitters have been hot, as Brandon Hicks is 5 for his last 11 with a double and JC Boscan has gone 5 for his last 11 with a homer and 4 RBI. Jose Ortegano gave up 2 walks and a single to lead off the top of the 5th inning before he was lifted for Cristian Martinez, who proptly gave up all 3 of Ortegano's runs. Martinez then proceeded to pitch 1.2 scoreless innings for the vulture win.

    Mississippi 2, Huntsville 1

  • Y. Gomez 1-4, .364 AVG
  • J. Sucre 1-3, HR (1), RBI, .311 AVG
  • E. Cordier 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 10 K, W (9), 3.81 ERA
  • T. Collins 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 K, SV (2), 1.13 ERA
  • The M-Braves made the most of their 3 hits tonight, with Jesus Sucre leading the way with his first AA homer. Erik Cordier picks up his career high 9th win and he's been on a roll in July with a 1.70 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 31.2 innings. Tim Collins has been great with his new team, racking up a 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 15.6 K/9 in 8 innings. I thought it was interesting that Jeremy Jeffress made his first appearance of the year for the Stars in this game. Baseball America pegged Jeffress as the number 4 prospect in the Brewers system from 07 to 09, but in the last 2 seasons he's served 2 separate suspensions, totaling 150 games, for testing positive for marijuana. One more positive test and he'll recieve a lifetime ban from the game. It's a shame to see a talented player working toward throwing his career away.

    Myrtle Beach - Postponed

    Rome 7, Asheville 6

  • T. Cunningham 3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, E (2), .269 AVG
  • J. Leonard 2-5, 2B, .RBI, .269 AVG
  • RSF 2-5, RBI, E (7), .306 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 2-5, 2B, RBI, .253 AVG
  • J. Hanson 2-4, 2B, RBI, .236 AVG
  • C. Masters 6.2 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 4 K, W (2), 3.34 AVG
  • Despite missing a few months with a broken hand, Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg has been a consisten hitter for the team. But it's troubling that he's made 7 errors in just 37 games. He made 6 in 62 last year, so that's a huge regression. It's possible that the broken hand, which has sapped his power, is also affecting his fielding. Chris Masters has been slumping since the All-Star break, but he put up a quality start tonight and picked up his second win of the year.

    Danville 1, Princeton 7

  • E. Gattis 1-4, 2B, .355 AVG
  • J. Freirson 1-3, 3B, .304 AVG
  • K. Farrell 6 IP, 6 ER, 9 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 4.36 ERA
  • Evan Gattis has been slugging all year and he's been on a tear in his last 10 games, with a .395 average and .941 OPS in that span. 23 year old second baseman Jarred Frierson was selected in the 36th round this year and he's played well in limited time, with a .304 average and .798 OPS in 46 at bats. Andrelton Simmons had been on a bit of a run, but he's gone cold in his last three, going hitless in 10 at bats with just a walk in those games. Kyle Farrell got lit up tonight, but if you take out this game and his July 4th start, where he also allowed 6 earned, he has a 1.57 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP in 23 innings.

GCL Braves 3, GCL Blue Jays 4

  • M. Lipka 1-5, RBI, SB (13), .320 AVG
  • K. Fleming 2-4, .232 AVG
  • I. Marshall 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 4.65 ERA
  • Matt Lipka has cooled off a bit, with just 2 hits in his last 17 at bats but the young man is still having a fine season. Kurt Fleming, a 18 year old high schooler that the Braves picked in the 8th round this year, hasn't played as well, hitting just .232 with a .548 OPS in 82 at bats, but plenty of young players have struggled in the GCL and gone on to success. Ian Marshall was selected in the 40th round this year, and he's the second lowest pick the Braves have signed so far. The 23 year old out of the University of Richmond hasn't played up to the level you would hope an experienced, older pitcher would in the GCL, with a 4.65 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 31 innings.

DSL Braves 1, DSL Astros 3

  • F. Marte 1-3, 2B, BB, .255 AVG
  • A. Nin 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 5 K, 5.97 ERA
  • J. Gil 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.61 ERA
  • Jean Carlos Gil has pitched in 13 games this year, 7 of them in relief, and he followed up his 6 innings of shutout ball in a start a few days ago with a scoreless relief inning today. The 20 year old is one of the better pitchers on the DSL team, putting up a 1.61 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP in 44.2 innings. He's been able to keep his walks down, with a 0.8 BB/9 rate and an outstanding 10.5 K/BB rate.

CB, what can you tell me about this MacClowth guy? I like the power he showed tonight but he appears to have come from no where and he is a little old for the league. With that said we do need a CF in the Majors. What is his ETA? And could he be useful this season?

I hear he has a rocket arm
    .....

    I hate my fat fingers.

    Laser rocket

Don’t try going 1st to home on him.

I hear he has a rocket arm in CF

    Beautiful swing too. Very level.

All I know about him is that he’s 5’3" in heels.

I hear he never pops out, strikes out looking, or grounds out softly to the second baseman.

I hear he always tries to make the throw to the plate.

    Question--

Does the minor league manager get to set the lineup however he chooses? Or does the organization force him to play McLouth at the top? Obviously he would be aware of his struggles in the bigs; seems like a questionable spot to put him in the lineup.

It’s a combination. The Minor League managers haves a fair amount of say in the day to day lineups, but they also get mandates from the organization about certain players. I’m sure Dave Brundage knows the plan is to hit McLouth leadoff every night just like the plan has been to hit Freeman in the middle of the lineup every night.

I hear he could be our answer in CF!

I still think mclouth is our answer for center field. Despite the way that everyone on this blog trashes him, he was good for us last year and if he succeeds in shortening his swing, he could be better than any center fielder we could acquire (plus he comes cheap).

Agreed that if he can fix what's ailing him in AAA

it’ll be huge. Just not so sure he can make that fix.

You have the best avatar ever

    Thank you kindly...

    yours isn’t too bad either.

“We can never go back to Arizona!”

    "That's our last bowl!"

“Don’t say David Arquette to me!”

    So much gold there.

“She’s in the slide show. Bouche!”

“So, who’s read Flowers for Algernon?”

    “Brother of Menalaous.”

    "That's Tom Bergeron"

    “Nearl, I’m gonna kill Babar.”

    Jeremy Jeffress

The Brewers found a loophole in MLBs system. They put Jeffress on their 40 man roster so basically his suspension time starts over.

Man, I love this awesome system they have. They test Minor Leaguers for HGH and a guy who should be in line for a lifetime ban gets a clean slate because of an essentially meaningless transaction. Good stuff MLB, good stuff.

wait you don’t want them to test for HGH?

I do want them to test Minor Leaguers for HGH, but I want them to test the Major Leaguers too, and I want them tested more. HGH is illegal and expensive and it takes a fair amount of money to get your hands on it. Minor Leaguers don’t have a lot of money; there have been countless cases of guys not being able to pay their rent or buy themselves food. Not every guy gets those million dollar contracts. After the first 5 rounds or so the bonuses are going from 50K on down, all the way to nothing for later picks. A player in A ball makes 20K a year and he doesn’t get paid for Spring Training or the Instructional Fall League. Simply put, the vast majority of Minor Leaguers (including the majority of guys who are most likely to cheat to hold on to their dream) can’t afford HGH, but all Major Leaguers can. Testing the Minor Leaguers for HGH is an empty gesture by an ineffective and impotent governing party.

Shhhh…they don’t want people thinking like this..

I know the guy is an idiot for getting caught twice already, but 3 times for pot = lifetime ban?

    For pot?

    Just seems a little harsh.

Wait, you think a guy who breaks the law 3 times should not be fired from his job?

He’s lucky he got a 3rd chance. Who cares if it is “just pot?” It’s an illegal substance that many Americans would lose their jobs for on the first offense.

Someone who gets caught should be banned for stupidity, if nothing else.

    Fair enough.

I understand the illegality of the substance (which is ludicrous), but pot doesn’t inherently give him an advantage at playing baseball or is cheating the game in any way.

It’d be like giving a guy a lifetime ban for getting 3 DUI’s or something.

Sure, he’s an idiot, but lifetime ban is extreme.

If someone got 3 DUIs, they deserve to have a lifetime ban, and 5-10 in jail.

BREAKIN THE LAW BREAKIN THE LAW

It’s more than the legality or the stupidity, it’s about the image that baseball wants to send out. The whole idea of the sport is to get kids to love it so they become fans and pay out the ass to watch it when they get older. Parents aren’t going to let their kids watch a game with a bunch of druggies playing, so doing pot isn’t the image they want to put across. This is actually the only reason they care about the backlash from steroids, because it puts a negative image on the game that parents don’t want to expose their kids to.

What’s really messed up is that Tim Lincecum didn’t get any kind of punishment for getting busted with pot. If a Minor Leaguer was arrested for possession he’d get the 50 games no question, but a Major Leaguer pretty much has to get convicted, which won’t happen because they can afford awesome lawyers, to have anything happen to him. The inequity of the rules and how they apply to different people is shocking in this game.

The inequity of the rules and how they apply to different people is shocking in this game.

    You got that DARN right……

but then, such is life in general...

so it’s not like baseball is any different in that regard.

Hell, Bill “Spaceman” Lee openly admitted to toking up often before games and he never had any problems.

Except with Steinbrenner who did in fact suggest banning him.

    Who was it, Steve Howe...

that got busted for cocaine like half a dozen or more times and kept pitching for the Yankees. Yeah, I’d say this seems a bit harsh.

Howe was banned for life in 92, but he appealed and got to play again in 94. Over the course of his career he was suspended 7 different times, a few times for a whole season. Maybe if there were sharper consequences he wouldn’t have died before he was 50.

    This

What’s the punishment for testing positive for alcohol? I know, I know – one is legal and the other isn’t. The fact is, if teams truly cared about the well-being of their players, they would test for alcohol (if that’s even testable) as well. Alcohol is at least as destructive to the human body as weed.

Now you’re getting into the larger issue of the hypocrisy of our laws. All “hardcore” drugs combined have only killed 1% of the amount of people alcohol and cigarettes have killed, yet there’s a war on them while alcohol and cigarettes are available on every corner.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CAN MATT YOUNG GET A FUCKING CALLUP.

Pardon my french, but I’m getting angry FOR the guy. What the hell does he have to do? Its not like we’re a team stacked in CF or something.

He can OBP close to .400. Steal 30+ bases. And hit doubles. He also has the flexibility of playing 2nd.

Why does he keep getting overlooked for Blanco?

He’s a ton more valuable than Brent F’ing Clevelen. How the hell does he have a spot on our 40-man roster?

This. I can see a certain number of arguments against Young being up. Not that I really agree with them, but there are some reasons why he might still be in AAA. But there really is no excuse for him to be in AAA while Brent Clevlen is in the Majors.

To be fair to Blanco, he’s a lot better this season. At least in the time that I’ve seen him playing at the Major League level. They seem to be identical players, if not for a few small differences. If Blanco were to start sucking, then by all means, Matt Young should get a shot.

I concur with this. Also, Blanco has two things that Matt Young unfortunately doesn’t have, seasoning in the big leagues, and he’s on the 40 man roster. I could see Atlanta dumping Clevlen off the 40 man though if he doesn’t do anything and push him back to Gwinnett and bring Young up. I think Young would be a great spark plug to have at the leadoff spot and then let Prado slide back to 2nd in the order and put Heyward further down to give us some more damaging hitters in the lower half of the order.

    I should’ve concurred.

    Would Clevlen clear waivers?

and would the team like keep him next year, I think those are the big questions for dumping him off the 40 man.

First, yes, I think he would clear waivers because every team has at least one guy like him, a AAA vet who has some talent but hasn’t proven anything in the Majors, and second, who cares? He’s easily replaceable because, as I said, every team has at least one guy like him.

From what I have seen out of the two players, Matt Young is more capable of getting extra base hits and can steal more bases than Blanco. The thing that concerns me some is the fact that I rarely see Matt Young playing centerfield. He played second last night and turned a nice double play. I watched the Gwinnett game on cable last night and that triple by Matt Young was awesome. I hope he gets a shot eventually.

    Jordan Schafer

I’m really starting to worry about him now.

0-3 again tonight with 2 k’s. I think his days as a prospect are over…I really hope he takes this offseason and gets his act together.

I agree. It seems like he would have his wrist healthy and his timing back by now but he is just having an awful season. I am not ready to write him off yet but with his talent you would think he would be doing a lot better.

I can tell you from experience, that wrists don’t heal within a year, especially when you swing a two pound stick everyday. Wrists are one of the slowest healing parts of the body. Considering the heavy usage, there is just not a lot of time for rest and recovery with the muscles and tendons around the joint. The fatigue that sets in when not properly rested could lead to more damage and an even longer recovery time. I think they should shut him down for a few weeks, where he is only swinging once or twice a week to keep timing.

All we have to do is look at a guy like Freeman to see what a difference a healthy wrist makes.

How long do we have to wait until we can stop using the wrist excuse?

    Next season

Most Under-the-Radar Prospect in the Organization...

    Erik Cordier…

As the blip points out, he’s been a major roll. His BB numbers are bad, but those have been going in the right direction for him and the Braves for awhile.

    Look at his other numbers: 115.2 IP 99 H only 2 HR allowed .236 BAA 97 K

Stuff: Best fastball, slider, change up combo in the organization. worked 93-94 topped 96 last night. Has been as high as 98 this year. (by the way, JT was 92-94 touched 95 the night before.)

He lost 2.5 years due to injuries so he has a very fresh arm.

Not under-the-radar to the people that matter: the front office.

    The best part about him

Is that we got him for Tony Pena Jr. Tony Pena Jr!

Supposively, he could throw 100 before the surgery…

I heard it was closer to 120 and the royals made him stop throwing his curve because it would get imbedded in home plate

funny how nate tears it up in Triple A
