Gwinnett 6, Toledo 3

  • M. Young 2-5, 2 2B, RBI, .303 AVG
  • F. Freeman 1-5, HR (9), 2 RBI, .282 AVG
  • D. Hernandez 2-5, E (1), .345 AVG
  • JC Boscan 2-4, RBI, .226 AVG
  • J. Reyes 4.2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 8 K, 6.10 ERA
  • M. Dunn 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K, SV (7), 0.69 ERA
  • Matt Young has been red hot lately, with a .432 average, a 1.091 OPS, and 5 stolen bases in his last 10 games. Freddie Freeman has been hot as well, extending his hitting streak to 8 games whil clubbing out his 3rd homer in his last 5 games. Mike Dunn and Craig Kimbrel have been an awesome back of the bullpen combo, combining for a 0.81 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in 66.2 innings with a 3-0 record and 17 saves.

    Mississippi 4, Birmingham 6

  • M. Gomez 2-4, 2 HR (9, 10), 3 RBI, .261 AVG
  • L. Bolivar 1-3, HR (1), RBI, SB (4), E (12), .290 AVG
  • J. Thompson 5 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 6.59 ERA
  • After a slow April, Mauro Gomez has been a solid, consistent force in the middle of the M-Braves lineup. Jacob Thompson just continues to struggle, allowing way too many baserunners.

    Myrtle Beach 4, Kinston 2

  • My. Jones 1-3, 2B, BB, SB (7), .362 AVG
  • Mi. Jones 2-3, 2B, RBI, BB, .246 AVG
  • L. Sumoza 2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, .242 AVG
  • JJ Hoover 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 K, W (5), 4.15 AVG
  • B. Oberholtzer 3 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (1), 4.56 ERA
  • Myke Jones continues to dominate the Carolina League, extending his hitting streak to 8 games. And somebody woke up Luis Sumoza because in his last 7 games he's hitting .370 with a .986 OPS. After allowing 14 earned runs in his last 10.2 innings, JJ Hoover rebounded in a big way tonight, allowing just 1 earned in 6 innings while striking out 7. Brett Oberholtzer made his second appearance since coming off the DL, again in relief, and again he was very good. I doubt he'll stay in the pen the rest of the year, but it's great that he's having the success he is in that role.

    Rome 7, Greensboro 6

  • P. Gosselin 3-4, 2 RBI, SB (2), .308 AVG
  • T. Cunningham 2-3, 3B, .242 AVG
  • E. Salcedo 0-4, 2 K, .000 AVG
  • C. Masters 4 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 2.61 ERA
  • J. Surinach 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 3.62 ERA
  • The R-Braves entered the bottom of the 9th trailing the Grasshoppers 6-3, but pulled out the win, thanks in large part to Phil Gosselin. Todd Cunninham led off the inning by reaching on an error, then Jake Hanson followed with a single. Ramon Flores singled in Cunningham and was followed by Gosselin who singled in both Hanson and Flores. The Grasshoppers threw the ball around a bit attempting to stop Flores from scoring and Gosselin ended up at third. Then, with Jordan Kreke at the plate, Gosselin stole home. That's right, just your ordinarly every day walk-off steal of home. Craziness. It seems like an afterthought after all that, but Edward Salcedo made his American professional debut, going hitless in 4 at bats.

    Danville 2, Princeton 5

  • A. Simmons 1-5, 2B, RBI, E (2), .212 AVG
  • D. Falcon 1-4, HR (2), RBI, E (2), .226 AVG
  • R. Weber 6.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.46 ERA
  • T. Stovall 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Ryan Weber shows again that he's a good pitcher who was probably just a little overmatched at Rome. Tyler Stovall continues to work out of the bullpen, confounding the logic of many, but he's had a ton of success, espeically tonight as he managed to avoid walks entirely.

    GCL Braves - Postponed, Rain

DSL Braves 0, DSL Tigers 1

  • F. Marte 1-4, 2B, .244 AVG
  • E. Castillo 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 1.19 AVG
  • 19 year old Eduardo Castillo has been great this season, with a 1.19 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP in 30.1 innings. He's not striking out many, averaging just 5 per 9 innings, but he's not walking anyone either, averaging just 1.2 per 9.

You mispelled some stuff and there are some typos as well

    This is lazy journalism.

Who's been playing 3B for Rome?

I thought for sure that Joe Leonard would be sent straight there, but when he signed, he was sent to Danville instead. Regardless, how great has Phil Gosselin been since he signed? I’m already getting excited by this guy.

Seems to me like he’s been doing really well, a .208 average and a .725 OPS in his first pro experience.

Kreke has been the main 3B all year, but he’s also played a fair amount of SS, especially since Myke Jones was promoted. Matt Weaver and Chris Curley have played a fair bit of 3B too.

    Hmmm

Not much there, is there? Do you think Leonard might be promoted fairly quickly? There’s a lot of third basemen at Danville already.

I think if Leonard was going to go there at all he would have just been sent to Rome. There are a lot of 3B at Danville, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Personally, I’d take one of the college guys like Leonard or Terdoslavich and put them at Rome instead of Weaver and Curley, but that’s me.

    This.

It seems like Weaver isn’t quite ready for full season ball, IMO. I mean he’s only 20 and he’s been a cold weather guy. It seems like to me Leonard and Terdoslavich are probably both more advanced.

    Also, speaking of Myke Jones

It actually wouldn’t surprise me to see him traded sometime this year. He’s probably close to maxing out his value, and since he came up to Myrtle, he’s batting .443 on balls in play. It reminds me a little bit of the situation with Gorkys Hernandez last year. We managed to deal him while he was still considered a commodity, even though he was batting over .400 on balls in play as well.

Even the comparisons with Chone Figgins seem a bit optimistic for him.

It never really surprises me when anyone gets traded, but Myke is a guy I’d hold on to if I were making the decisions. The Braves don’t have a ton of infield depth and they have very few athletes that can match his ability.

Didn’t Baseball America rate him as our most athletic prospect and also say he had rocket speed, only .1 second off Kyle Rose’s fastest-in-the-organization dash time?

Yeah, and they also ranked him the top shortstop prospect in the system.

mind you that was pre-Salcedo. I think if you asked them now they’d give you a different answer on that.

He’s probably behind Lipka, too, though he’s much more advanced.

    I was impressed w/ Gosselin

I don’t think he’s a future regular—more of a numbered bases bench player—but I really like him a lot and I think Braves fans are going to as well. Dude reminds me of Brooks Conrad in how he plays the game.

Meant to say impressed w/ Gosselin tonight

    But does he raw-dog it?

    So sadly, no.

It would be so much cooler if he did.

Hard to not be impressed by any legitimate steal of home.

It wasn't really a legit steal, though.

More just idiotic defense. Kreke missed a bunt on a squeeze attempt, their catcher bobbled which froze Gosselin. He threw to 3rd and Gosselin started running home. When the 3B threw it back home, the catcher cut it off about 10 feet up the line rather than letting it get to the plate where the pitcher was covering.

True story. But it did make for quite an exciting finish to the game…. classic Braves….way down in the bottom of the ninth with a mammoth comeback that got down to the last play of the game…

    Yeah, it was awesome.

What we haven’t discussed here is Ramon Flores’ amazing assist in the top of the 9th. What an arm that guy has.

I forgot to report it, but Randy Gress has been released by the Braves. He’s already caught on with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic Leauge. He joins former Braves Daryle Ward, Scott Spezio, Kala Ka’aihue, Kelvin Villa, Mikey Mehlich, Mike Nix, and Brian Barton on the Bears roster, along with former Major Leaguers Carl Everett, Edgardo Alfonso, and Elijah Dukes.

He had a hot run earlier in the year
Hey CB, does Gosselin project to have any kind of speed at the big league level?

No clue. I don’t know much about the brand new guys that I haven’t read somewhere else.

His running ability is somewhere between that of Martin Prado and Kelly Johnson. Not awesome, but slightly above-average.

What's the story on Chris Masters?

Other than tonight he’s seemed pretty lights out. Still, nobody mentions him as a prospect.

I’ve been told he’s too old for his league and throws too soft. Most are skeptical that he will be able to duplicate this success at higher levels.

and lately there hasn’t been much success

The First real Bigfoot sighting! Hopefully he can get some hits tomorrow.

    here you go :)

sorry it won’t let me edit the size, this is probably huge….

    oh let's try again....

Now….here you go. :-) (and maybe the good editing fairy will cancel the previous post that didn’t work…..)

    TWSS

I still think this is a picture of someone else in an improvised Salcedo Jersey

    Confirmation

I’m sorry, but those helmets are awful. Might as well put some advertising on that thing it’s so huge.

This. They really look bad on skinny guys.
