The Mississippi Braves will be welcoming two of the brightest and most promising prospects in the Braves system this week, pitchers Julio Teheran and Randall Delgado, but they will also be receiving a player who was once thought of as the Braves top prospect. Outfielder Jordan Schafer was reassigned from triple-A Gwinnett to double-A Mississippi today.
The talented Schafer was hitting just .201 this season at Gwinnett and was just 4-for-his-last-29. His power (.276 SLG) and on-base (.255 OBP) skills have also been non-existent at Gwinnett.
Hopefully this demotion will help Schafer right the ship, but for any Braves fans that were thinking they would see him in Atlanta this year, you can pretty much forget about it.

I hope he figures things out in Mississippi. I still have some sort of hope for someone with so much promise! I just hope he didn’t have to learn the hardest way about not reporting an injury..
UpstateNyBravesFan - July 23, 2010
Sad story here. Let’s hope he can get it together before he’s playing for the Royals.
ducheneaux13 - July 23, 2010
Wondering what the appropriate change in expectation should be?
For awhile, we’ve had him penciled in as the starting CF. Wondering if career 4th OF’er is perhaps more appropriate. He doesn’t switch hit like Melky, but if his bat could get even to Melky-level, then he’d be valuable for his defense.
fphjr01 - July 23, 2010
I wouldn’t worry too much about his as he is just getting back in playing shape this year. He should be back to normal next year. If he is this bad next year I would start to worry.
palioc33 - July 23, 2010
Apparently it had to do with more than results.
AJC reports had him being sent down to get his attitude in check.
MichaelProcton - July 28, 2010
Sending him down to improve the CF range for the young pitchers while also trying to fix him at the plate?
McLouth Maniac - July 23, 2010
Man I love this kid – really hope he can work things out
Zeus12888 - July 23, 2010
well
all of a sudden i’ll have to start paying attention to mississippi box scores
atl192485 - July 23, 2010
He is still young
So he still has another year and a half to turn things around.
LEastCoastBears - July 23, 2010
Love the Kid
Hope he gets things turned around
Eleth - July 23, 2010
He’s been disappointing this year, for sure. I’m not ready to give up on him, though my optimism is certainly tainted. Not just because of the results, he’s looked pretty awful at the plate.
I think the wrist injury is still bothering him. I hope the problem doesn’t persist, but I can’t get away from the possibility that he’ll never be the same.
PWHjort - July 23, 2010
My hope is that the injury is really bad
and he’ll just say screw it, i need more time off. Then comes back with a bang in 2011 Freddie Freeman-style.
Scott Coleman - July 23, 2010
I got to see Schafer play back in May in AA, his D, arm and speed were still very good. He had zero power with the bat. I heard that his wrist/hand had atrophied in the cast and would take a while to build back up. I hope he returns to some large degree of his old self, but it doesn’t look too good right now.
bighop - July 23, 2010
I wouldn't totally rule him out as a late callup when rosters expand
He’s a great athlete with fresh young legs who can play good outfield defense. I could see him being a potential asset on the bench when we need to rest some of those weary September bones.
A return to the major league dugout – even in a very limited role – might be booster shot of confidence for him heading into next season, which will be a critical one for him from a developmental standpoint.
DCP916 - July 23, 2010
question
How many people can be called up?
bravestatoo - July 23, 2010
All of them. You can have up to 40 players active in September. But usually it’s not more than 5 or 6.
cbwilk - July 23, 2010
thanx CB
bravestatoo - July 23, 2010
how about another TC meet up..
For Glavin number retirement game?
bravestatoo - July 23, 2010
That’s on y’all. I can’t get back down to Atlanta this year. But we’ve got a TC meetup going in DC in September.
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
Apparently...
Confidence hasn’t been something he’s had a problem with, results notwithstanding.
MichaelProcton - July 28, 2010
Sad turn of events...
Let’s hope this can help him turn things around.
Jman781 - July 23, 2010
Prospects
All of them have promise. Most of them fail, including the vast majority of the good ones. Always keep that in mind when salivating over them.
Thrashy Thrashy - July 23, 2010
Not exactly surprised ...
But wow. Hope he can stay humble and get back, but he has to be pretty frustrated at this point.
FrankyWren - July 23, 2010
It’s a shame. I really really like this kid. He has talent. Next year I’d have to think is do or die for him
eaheckman10 - July 23, 2010
HGH?
kbertling353 - July 23, 2010
he did get busted for PEDs in the past
i would not b surprised at all
ChitownBravos - July 23, 2010
Know-nothing internet troll talking out of his ass?
Does not surprise me at all.
buzzdeadwax - July 23, 2010
do i lie
i wish him the best… so leave me alone… its not like im accusing u of murder or something… back off
ChitownBravos - July 23, 2010
it's called blogoethical compliance ...
Rumors spread like wildfire around here. Don’t take it personally. Buzz is just trying to preemptively dispel what could really snowball with time.
By the way, Chicago is miserable. Carry on.
FrankyWren - July 23, 2010
i know i hate it here
but if i remember correctly he was suspended for a significant amount of time for PED use
ChitownBravos - July 23, 2010
He was suspended 50 games for PEDs, but the real story is that he was fingered by a teammate who was doing them, to get the suspicion off himself, and Schafer wouldn’t name the players he knew was doing it so he got the suspension. He never took PEDs.
cbwilk - July 23, 2010
seems pretty unlikely
pretty sure MLB was tipped off (anonymous hotline) and found some sort of proof that he had bought HGH
kbertling353 - July 23, 2010
actually
I believe CB completely on this.
scorby911 - July 23, 2010
A simple lie is often a lot easier to believe than a complex truth.
cbwilk - July 23, 2010
negative.
justincredubil02 - July 24, 2010
well if this is true
then i hope it is just that wrist still bothering him… but that story just seems a little too good to b true
ChitownBravos - July 23, 2010
Well, it’s the truth.
cbwilk - July 23, 2010
and its been corroborated elsewhere if i remember correctly.
Swo12bv - July 23, 2010
This
buzzdeadwax - July 26, 2010
This, too
buzzdeadwax - July 26, 2010
He never got busted for PEDs. He got busted for being accused of using PEDs. Nothing was ever proven, and he still denies it to this day.
justincredubil02 - July 24, 2010
Nothing's been proven with Bonds, either.
Doesn’t stop people from smearing him.
MichaelProcton - July 28, 2010
cbwilk, not to rub it in, but i'll rub it in (see below)
Is Schafer still doing nothing? At what do point do we send him to Mississippi and let him get straightened out down there?
by ruxsin on Jul 17, 2010 10:01 PM PDT reply
. He won’t be getting sent to AA.
I wrote a novel, it’s about baseball, you should buy it: https://www.createspace.com/3407939

Douche
acie4mvp - July 23, 2010
Not trying to be a douche. Just figured he knew something when he said 5 days ago he wasn’t getting sent down. I want to see this kid succeed and figured sending him down made sense.
ruxsin - July 23, 2010
Look, if I got a lot of things right in life I wouldn’t be where I am now.
cbwilk - July 23, 2010
Good luck with the writing career cbwilk
I’m from the Peake, and went to many Tides games growing up, back when they were the Fets farm club. Living in Atlanta now.
Shark Judge - July 23, 2010
ha. i totally understand.
ruxsin - July 24, 2010
Thanks man, I appreciate it. I’ve got a season ticket to the Tides, so I’m out there every night. Always nice to hear from another Tidewater person.
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
Even me?
justincredubil02 - July 24, 2010
Hell yeah. Wish you’d come back again!
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
Me too, brother. Next time I am in town, I am going to go to one of your shows that you fill up my facebook newsfeed with!
justincredubil02 - July 25, 2010
hey cb
is that book nonfiction or fiction
sounds good
ChitownBravos - July 24, 2010
It’s fiction. But based on a lot of real life experiences from various guys. I haven’t heard anyone say they don’t like it yet (but maybe they’ve just been polite).
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
+22
Mr. Sanchez - July 24, 2010
Kid has got to be frustrated at the way his career has started. 50 game suspension, broken wrist, difficult comeback. Hope he gets things squared away the rest of this season so he can make the trek back to the show next spring.
FWIW, I’d be surprised to see him called up in September unless he really starts raking.
UMDBHIK - July 24, 2010
AJC reports had this being as much about his work ethic and attitude as anything.
Are the tied-in miLB guys in agreement at all? Something was specifically mentioned about forcing him out of the comfort of his fancy ATL apartment.
MichaelProcton - July 28, 2010
Personally I think Schafer has a great work ethic and attitude and things just aren’t going well, but if that’s what they think is happening then maybe I’m just wrong.
cbwilk - July 28, 2010
It was from Bowman:
