After a rough loss last night, the Braves came back well this afternoon both offensively and on the mound. Tim Hudson threw seven shutout innings and the Braves offense put eight runs across to officially give the Braves the best record in the National League.
Hudson looked great in his seven innings, allowing just five base runners and striking out four. He walked just one batter, which was great to see given his high walk total in comparison to his career average. Michael Dunn had trouble finding the zone and recorded just one out while walking three, but Peter Moylan got out of the jam by inducing a double play. Moylan finished off the game with a perfect ninth inning, capping off the shutout.
Alex Gonzalez and Melky Cabrera reached base four times a piece. Gonzalez had four hits, including a double, and two RBI. Cabrera hit two doubles and walked twice while scoring two runs. Jason Heyward added two hits and two RBI. Chipper Jones had a good day as well as he hit three singles with one resulting in an RBI.
Clayton Richard, on paper, should have given the Braves the most problems of any starter in the series. He didn't perform well and the Braves were able to get nine hits off of him in six innings. Ryan Webb put together another bad outing, just as he did in the series opener.

Despite Hudson's great performance, the Braves offense was what I liked most about today. They were able to score eight runs without the virtue of a long ball and every Braves starter reached base at least once. Martin Prado was the only starter not to get a hit, but he lead the bottom of the first off with a walk. Although it is in limited time, Alex Gonzalez has been very good for the Braves. He currently has a line of .370/.433/.519, substantially better than what they were getting from Yunel Escobar.
Up next is Derek Lowe (10-8, 4.39 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 4.07 xFIP) vs. Alejandro Sanabia (1-1, 2.12 ERA, 3.71 FIP, 3.86 xFIP) of the Florida Marlins. The Phillies are currently locked in a 0-0 tie and if they lose they will be eight games behind the Braves. The Mets play the Dodgers at 10:10, so we can all see where the Braves division lead stands later tonight.

I know we’ve been saying than Hudson will regress to his FIP, but with all these good starts, is it simply a case of he’s outperforming his FIP?
Zeus12888 - July 22, 2010
Yes.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010 via mobile
There was an article written on here about Hudson a month or so ago, speculating that something changed in his release point or his grip (or something like that), enabling him to induce more groundball outs, and thus why he is and will continue to outperform his FIP.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - July 22, 2010
It's his cyborg arm.
Allows for massive amounts of ground balls and his pitches move so much now, it caused his walks to go up earlier in the year because he wasn’t used to it yet.
Pavy848 - July 22, 2010
FIP is horseshit
Hudson is an ace. Hudson has always been an ace. Hudson has a shot at the HOF.
How anybody could have watched baseball over the past decade and come to any other conclusion is beyond me. And these 40 year old virgins who keep coming up with these new convoluted mathematical formulas year after year – either under the bullshit “better mousetrap” philosophy or the even more bullshit “your eyes deceive you” philosophy – are all in desperate need of an ear punch.
DCP916 - July 22, 2010
FIP
isn’t horseshit. It’s just horseshit for Hudson.
And…
Only 41-year old virgins argue with 40-year old virgins.

I get so pissed when I read these posts by all these stat nerds and their “math”. I wish I could give them all a wedgie and throw em in a garbage can like I used to in high school. ……….missed the sarcasm much?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - July 22, 2010
Here’s my problem with this “he is gone, stop talking about him” mentality: If we are to live by this rule, then we are no longer allowed to talk about Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Dale Murphy or anyone else who left Atlanta.
justincredubil02 - July 23, 2010
seriously talking about yunel in the same breath as those guys?!?!?!
they were the faces of the franchise during their time.
yunel will never be what they were that’s why it’s silly to keep bringing him and the trade up. it’s over.

frozendesert - July 22, 2010
why is that?
Sparhawk - July 22, 2010
Because we’re good and shouldn’t have lost last night’s game.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010 via mobile
Definitely
Anytime in the last five years, I would have been ecstatic about a series with this result. Now.... meh...frozendesert - July 22, 2010
that and looking at the lineup...
it’s hard to think of San Diego as good as their record indicates.
Mr. Sanchez - July 22, 2010
I agree.
Knowing that we were two outs from winning last night, I can’t help but be a little disappointed that we only won the series and didn’t sweep.
But at the same time I realize that’s kind of dumb and that I can’t really complain at all. We haven’t lost a series at home in 3 months. That’s frickin’ fantastic.

KINGSLYTUT - July 22, 2010
Great series, top 2 records in the NL fight it out for a split decision 2-1, Braves take the season series 4-2. The returns of Jurrjens, Heyward and Diaz have been great, the trade for Gonzalez has gone real well, now pay somebody to take McOut and bring back Blanco. Cabrera is looking good enough to start in CF, especially compared to who we are rumored to be interested in.
bighop - July 22, 2010
I thought McLouth is swinging the bat better since has been back. He has hit a few balls really hard and on the button that just found gloves and his only strike out came against Gregerson who is just filthy.
bbxxj - July 22, 2010
I gave up on him a while back. Spring training was aweful, April, May, June July, I don’t have a clue what happened to him, but he has just lost it in my eyes. When he came to the plate last night in the 3rd inning, popped up the 1st pitch after Tommy had struggled some, it about made me sick. He seems like a great guy, the team loves him, I understand all that. He just can’t hit a baseball anymore, not to mention he refuses to throw the ball from CF. I am ready to move on, I understand some folks are not. He was bad in Sept, injured last August, was his last decent month in July ’09? I really wish he would wake up and be a .250 hitter, but I have 0 confidense that he will.

they'll have to get a hit first

atl192485 - July 22, 2010
Sweet win.
Now if we could just get Prado, Glaus, and Hinske going again, we might be unstoppable.
Glad to see Huddy back on track and the offense scoring some runz today. Now let’s go out and bury the Marlins so deep that Frank Wren can’t find Cody Ross to trade for him.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Well put! (Rec’d)
Joseph_C - July 22, 2010
Like it or not boys and girls
I’d say Cody Ross already has a Braves uni on under his Florida pinstripes
ATLBRVS_19 - July 22, 2010
Why
do you say that? (No offense meant, just wondering)
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
I don't see where the basis is for this assumption.
It seems to me like he’s one of several options Wren is exploring, and certainly not the only one.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
2 asst. GMs were at the Marlins game the other night. Why else would they be there?
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
To explore one of several options.
OR, more obviously…
to scout the Marlins for THIS WEEKEND’S SERIES.
Come on, folks.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
You don’t send assistant GM’s to scout for THIS WEEKEND’S SERIES.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
Why not?
Their job is to scout the other teams, is it not?
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Not assistant GMs, no. Those guys are like Frank Wren’s BFFs and he makes most of his decisions based off what they and a few others say. We have plenty of lesser scouts to scout the Marlins for us.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
I am pretty sure
I’ve heard of Jim Fregosi advance scouting various of our opponents on numerous occasions.
But even granting your statement that he was there to scout Ross, why does this guarantee that we are trading for Ross, and not just investigating him as one of many possibilities?
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
I never said it was guaranteed. Just possible, if not probable.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
The guy who started this topic ATL_BRVS19

atl192485 - July 22, 2010

I’m just stating my opinion. Over the years the Braves have always traded for a certain “type” player. To me Cody Ross fits that pattern alot more than DeJesus or Hart or whoever else
ATLBRVS_19 - July 22, 2010
Rec'd
He may be a back up on my fantasy team, but I don’t want him on my real team. Gosh.
XBEARDX - July 23, 2010
Cody Ross
I don’t see the need in trading for Ross. I am afraid that the Braves could mess with the chemistry of the team if they make too many changes. I also think that McClouth is going to find a way to contribute with his bat, his speed and his defense.
JimH - July 22, 2010
Cody Ross
I don’t see the need in trading for Ross. I am afraid that the Braves could mess with the AMAZINGNESS of the team if they ADD A GUY THAT CAN’T HIT WORTH SHIT.
FTFY
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
I honestly think I'd rather have Melky every day than Ross,
especially if Ross comes at the cost of even a decent prospect.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
You wouldn’t do Cody Ross for Mike Dunn?
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
Why?
What does he offer that helps us?
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
an offensive upgrade in CF?
over mclouth and melky?
atl192485 - July 22, 2010
I don't think he is an upgrade over Melky.
And if he is, he is only very slightly. And oddly, I like Melky’s defense better in CF.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
i agree about the defense
but, to generalize, ross is better vs. lefties than both mclouth and melky… by a pretty wide margin
atl192485 - July 22, 2010
Oh, sure.
Vs. lefties, only.
Do you think we really need a platoon CF that badly?
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Well we already have 5 people who are average in the outfield on the roster.
Why not add one more for shits and giggles?
DogDaysofSummer - July 22, 2010
depends on how much cody ross costs. i’m just saying, the marginal improvement may be worth it, clubhouse chemistry notwithstanding
atl192485 - July 22, 2010
The only player I would accept in a trade for Ross
would be McLouth.
If it’s McLouth for Ross, that’s an improvement. Otherwise, I’m not a fan.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Better production than Melky and McLouth?
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
Better than McLouth, yes.
But my left buttcheek could do that for free.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
haha
+1
Braves24 - July 22, 2010
Actually, it's the opposite...
when all 3 are at their best, McLouth and Ross are 20/20 types with a .750-800 ops. Melky is closer to 10/10, and .700-750 if I’m not mistaken. Of course, that “at their best” part is the tricky bit.
Mr. Sanchez - July 22, 2010
Precisely.
Ross is having a poor year, and we all know about Nate. I think the way Melky has played since May makes him at least as good of an option as Ross… and we don’t have to give up anything or mess with the clubhouse atmosphere at all.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
How is Ross a 20/20 guy? He has never stole more than nine bases.
Braves24 - July 22, 2010

Cody Ross’ 2010 line:

Ross is also a righty all of the time and has better career numbers. If the price is Mike Dunn (or equal to him), I say we make the deal.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010
Melky's #s are skewed
by his terrible April. He’s been better than Ross since the start of May, and I think he’s likely to be better for the rest of the season as well.

Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Melky’s 2010 line:

Check 1, check 2...
where’s that graphic I love so much.
Mr. Sanchez - July 22, 2010
You mean Hudson's wife?
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
No, I don't...
NCChopper has my favorite graphic.
And speaking of Mrs. Hudson, there was a hilarious bit about Joe spraying her with disinfectant at Scottish Rite last night on the game broadcast.
Mr. Sanchez - July 22, 2010
Haha....
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
This One
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
Ask, and ye shall receive. ;-)

Thank you, may I have another? ;)

2 runs on 12 hits for the phils....... and i thought WE were bad
atl192485 - July 22, 2010
I rather
dislike the Phillies.
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
BTW
Wal-Mart Strawberry Yogurt is freakin’ orgasmic.
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
Thanks for sharing, I guess.
DogDaysofSummer - July 22, 2010
You're
welcome. It even has little strawberries in it!
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
Um.
You’re surprised that the strawberry yogurt has strawberries in it? My how far we have fallen as a food-eating society.
Jacob Peterson - July 22, 2010
Just out of curiosity,
if I have somebody’s SS number, name, and address, where can I sell it to make money?
frozendesert - July 22, 2010
You're wierd
I like that.

Depends on who it is
GoBravesNY - July 22, 2010
I know this is beating a dead horse but Huddy made an interesting comment after
the game today. He said that Gonzalez has been a breath of fresh air on the field and in the clubhouse.
Erin6 - July 22, 2010
That’s more than great to read.
I like his demeanor on the field and it seems like he’s fit right into the team.
NCChopper - July 23, 2010
Dear Jason Heyward
please have children soon so they can play for the Braves. And can we sign your lil bro Jacob?
Thanks,
TC
MBL1 - July 22, 2010 via mobile
Jacob
Looked pretty damn cool in that Braves jersey in Anaheim last week.
Sam Jethroe - July 22, 2010
Was he at the AS Game? I didn’t see him…don’t know what he looks like. But I’m sure anyone related to Jason would look awesome in a Braves jersey
MBL1 - July 22, 2010 via mobile
anybody* wearing a braves jersey usually looks pretty awesome.
nfierstos10 - July 22, 2010
I had some unrealized hopes to see Roy Oswalt in one. Yummmmmm.
TheLetter2 - July 22, 2010
He'll consent to a trade here for...
A helicopter
£ 100,000
A complete set of steak knives (in the presentation box)
A Cairn Terrier called “Bobby”
A big box of them little rubber things that go “neep neep neep”
Sam Jethroe - July 22, 2010
One hundred thousand pounds? What’s he going to do with them? Light cigars? I’m telling you, the nouveau riche these days….
TheLetter2 - July 22, 2010
MLB Network guys
Talked to JHey before the game on their little platform. He brought Jacob along and introduced him.
Sam Jethroe - July 22, 2010
I know this is the way Bobby normally operates but...
Seriously, is there any reason for KK or Chavez to even show up at the stadium at this point? If you can’t get into the game when there’s an EIGHT RUN lead it’s not entirely clear if you’re ever getting in.
DeadlyWalrus - July 22, 2010
KK is there to keep Saito company.
Lennox - July 22, 2010
I want KKs job
$8MM a year to chill in the bullpen with Moylan and Wags.
Scott Coleman - July 22, 2010 via mobile
I would be worried
If the team scores too much and Wags gets mad, he might throw me into the stands or something. Or set me on fire.
Fonce - July 22, 2010
I love this team.
Just proving how good we actually are. Losing a heartbreaker and instead of struggling today we come out and beat the shit out of the Fathers.
Tim Goad - July 22, 2010
Here is my mental image of this.
The Padres came in today to deliver the final punch and as they throw it, the Braves look them straight in the face and say: “What the hell are looking at!” The Braves punch them square in the face and say: Learn your place, you bastards!"
kp.atl - July 22, 2010
The Braves are mentally tough and focused.
These things are important, if unmeasurable.
Sam Jethroe - July 23, 2010
Ah, the Phils fire Milt Thompson – oh how I love the sign of despair.
CharlotteChop - July 22, 2010
wow
the phils are really, really desperate.
atl192485 - July 22, 2010
And to think that he had the highest job security for a hitting coach last season.
ATLandKC - July 22, 2010
According to Mitch Williams (I know, I know...)
The Phills and Mets are each “Mayday Teams” right now.
I find this idea very amusing.
Sam Jethroe - July 23, 2010
While the Braves face the Marlins this weekend, the Phillies will face the Rockies.
Friday:
Roy Halladay / Aaron Cook
Saturday:
Kyle Kendrick / Ubaldo Jimenez
Sunday:
J.A. Happ / Jeff Francis
I say the Phillies MAYBE get one win. I like the Braves’ chances in Florida of winning at least 2 of 3.
TonyAlmeyda - July 23, 2010
Seeing Johnson on the mound today
Filled my heart with joy.
Sam Jethroe - July 23, 2010
Ouch!

Question
How many game are we gonna play at
Pro PlayerSun Life Stadium this year?WatsonTiger - July 23, 2010
6
3 coming up and three more september.
kp.atl - July 23, 2010
noticed your sig, where do you come from?
Kobe:The Legend - July 23, 2010
Mets lost
Oh I still remember that Bleacher report by that Mets fan saying that Beltran was the key and the reason the Mets were the team to beat. We’ll they got off to a crappy start and now are 7.5 games behind, while Philly has overtaken them by .5 game.
kp.atl - July 23, 2010
Well that’s what you get for giving anything Bleacher Report puts out more than 2 seconds of your time.
Scott Coleman - July 23, 2010
Carlos Beltran
Has a lot in common with Darryl Strawberry: once key Mets players who are now finito. Reyes is close behind.
It must suck to spend half the year going “You just WAIT until our A Team gets back!” and then having them turn into Barney and Gomer when they do.
Sam Jethroe - July 23, 2010
I live in NYC and the mets losing makes me smile...
…almost as much as a braves win!
toppleprone - July 23, 2010
I love this team.
justincredubil02 - July 23, 2010
