Gwinnett 1, Scranton/WB 6
I couldn't find any other Braves worth putting on this list so Jesus Montero gets the call, especially after the discussion from yesterday's recap. The question was who is going to be more valuable long term: Jesus Montero or Freddie Freeman? I actually think their season's demonstrate what I believe pretty well. Remember these two are the two youngest players in the International League right now. If you look at their seasons Freddie has been more consistent throughout the season and has slowly gotten better as the season has worn on and then really shot up last month and this month. Even with these two good months I don't think he was ever in any really bad slump (maybe one right before he got hot in July), he was just steady all season. Montero on the other hand was just terrible the first two months and then got a little better and then July got here and he did this: 18-47, 3 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 12 BB, 7K, .383/.500/.702. I think long term this is a good indicator of how things are going to pan out offensively: their career numbers may look fairly similar at the end but Freddie will get there by being steady year in and year out but at his peak Montero will probably be better but his career may not last as long. Just my two cents.
Mississippi 5, Mobile 6
Brandon Beachy had his first trouble as a starter and I wouldn't even consider it a bad start other than he didn't go more than 5 innings. I think, more importantly, is that he is throwing about 100 pitches a start each time out right now which means he just needs to manage his pitches better. He is striking out so many guys that it is running his pitch count up a bit. Willie Cabrera also continues to roll along killing baseballs and adding to his legend.
Wilmington 4, Myrtle Beach 5
J.J. Hoover put together his 4th straight quality start in July though he did push his monthly ERA up over 1.00 for the first time this month. This game had a strange ending. With the game tied going into the 9th inning Michael Jones hit a leadoff double. Coles Miles came in as his pinch runner and then was sacrificed over to 3rd. The next batter grounded out and left Miles at 3rd but he scored during the next batter when the pitcher balked in the winning run. That has got to hurt.
Lexington 3, Rome 1
Cory Rasmus has been quietly having a fantastic comeback season. Reports have him throwing in the mid-90s again and he has been compiling the strikeouts (72 in 83 innings). I wouldn't be surprised to see him wear down a little in the second half of the season, simply because he hasn't played in two years, but this season is already a success for him.
Pulaski 8, Danville 1
Willie Kempf has been amazing in both stops this season allowing just 13 hits in 32 innings while striking out 36. He probably needs to find his way into the Rome rotation for a real challenge. He pitched well enough for the win, even with just 5 hits of support on offense, but Matt Lewis came in and gave up 7 runs (granted just 2 earned, but he still can get guys out after an error) and the Braves lost the game despite an amazing performance from the 27th Rd pick.
GCL Braves 9, GCL Pirates 8
I missed it last night, but Cody Johnson started his rehab assignment with the GCL team and went 0-2, K. I expect him to hit 6 or 7 homers a night while he is here. Danny Falcon now has 8 hits in 13 AB for the GCL Braves after being pretty terrible in the Appy League. Brandon Drury is 7-17 in his last 4 games with 3 of his 4 XBH coming in those games. Matt Lipka is still in "beast mode".
DSL Braves 1, DSL Blue Jays 2
Jesus Saldeno continues to put up impressive numbers for the DSL Braves. He has 44K in 44 innings of work while allowing just 28 hits and 10 walks. I believe we have another stable of impressive international arms coming up through our system.

He pitched well enough for the win
So is that his fault, or the stat’s? :)
PWHjort - July 21, 2010
Its the Mets fault.
yondaime4 - July 21, 2010
Everything is the Mets fault...
and if it’s not the Mets, then it’s Philly’s fault.
DolphinNation - July 21, 2010
Jesus Montero wears Freddie Freeman pajamas
just for the record.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
?
seriously. have you SEEN Montero? The guy’s going to be a STUD Left Fielder for someone (I think he gets traded, possibly to Houston) as his Catching skills are horrid. He will, honestly, put up lines of .320/.410/.900 routinely. I wish I could say the same thing about Freeman, but it’s just not going to happen. His power has not developed like a 6’5" guy’s should. However, he’s very young and who knows what will happen when he is 25. I would, however, take Montero over Freeman in a heartbeat in any draft.
I would, though, take Freeman over Logan Morrison any day of the week (and I have in my keeper league…i have Montero and Freeman).

F2
is on pace to hit 20 or so HR and 35+ 2B as a 20 yr old in AAA. That’s plenty of power for a young kid.
BrockSamson - July 21, 2010
And he has better slugging than Montero at the moment, at the same age against the same competition...
I don’t get the talk about him having no power. He’s shown some pretty good power on the way up.
Mr. Sanchez - July 21, 2010
And Freeman is a pretty sharp fielding 1st baseman. Montero really is a guy without a position right now as he won’t stick at C in the majors.
BravesFan - July 21, 2010
He will automatically be a STUD left fielder tho…
bwellnjonesco - July 21, 2010
Assuming he can move well enough not to cost ...
as many runs in the field as he produces at the plate (see Donkey Dunn).
Mr. Sanchez - July 21, 2010
I was being sarcastic…
bwellnjonesco - July 21, 2010
It was a joke...
I didn’t realize you felt so strongly for Jesus Montero.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
Wait…so you’ve seen Montero and actually think he could play LF? I’d take Freddie out there before Montero, and I’d only put Freddie out there if I’d run out of starting pitchers to put out there.
cbwilk - July 21, 2010
lol
I’ve seen Montero AND i’ve read scouting reports that indicate that he’s LF bound.
but don’t let the facts fool you, oh you of all opinions that matter.
apoxonbothyourhouses - July 22, 2010
Smarminess aside, you’ve seen that chubby kid and think he could run enough to play LF? He has trouble getting to first.
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
Freddie Freeman is a boy among men playing like a man among boys
ATLandUNC - July 21, 2010
Dear South Atlantic League pitchers,
You do not impress me.

Ryne Reynoso was released last week. The 25 year old right handed pitcher was picked in the 26th round in the 2006 draft and he’d pitched well the last few years, especially considering he was mainly an outfielder in college. This year he didn’t have much success, splitting time between Gwinnett and Mississippi, with a 2-8 record, 5.45 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 69.1 innings (20 games, 10 starts).
He’s a great guy and it’s a shame things came to such an abrupt end. I hope he’s able to pick up his career with another team.
cbwilk - July 21, 2010
Sad to here.
As you said, hopefully he gets another shot in the minors to continue his career.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
wow...hear, not here
I’m an idiot.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
A bit surprising...
i thought he was one of those they liked long term.
Mr. Sanchez - July 21, 2010
I’m surprised we never tried him back in the pen.
bwellnjonesco - July 21, 2010
That is sad to hear…he was Tommy Hanson and Kris Medlen’s roommate at their Buckhead apartment/condo.
Dave_D - July 21, 2010
Good Luck Ryne!
Ryne a great year in AA Miss. last year and really could have won the Pitcher of The Year award. Good kid and we will miss him with the Braves! I understand he has landed in the Boston organization.
Seeer - July 21, 2010
wonderful rant
at the end of that paragraph about FF and Montero – you have the “stream of thought” market cornered!
Seriously tho, its awesome to see those thoughts at this point, and to reflect on those (and hold them over your head) in the future.
traphicg - July 21, 2010
Some days I have to keep the cap on the stream. Others I just don’t care
yondaime4 - July 21, 2010 via mobile
wow
some of you, rather that address points, pick out aspects of posts. seems to me you disagree with what i said but are too stupid to address it.
apoxonbothyourhouses - July 22, 2010
He wasn’t even talking to you. There’s no reason to go around calling folks stupid when you don’t even know what they’re talking bout.
cbwilk - July 24, 2010
what's going on with salcedo?
wisco - July 21, 2010
He's an 18 almost 19 y.o. kid
In the states for the 2nd time(1st time playing ball) in Low A, he’ll be fine.
Jay212033 - July 21, 2010
Leonard
Does anyone know why Leonard is not playing 3rd base? Has he already been moved from that position?
braves32 - July 21, 2010
I doubt he has been moved. He profiles as an above average defensive 3B according to pre-draft reports
yondaime4 - July 21, 2010 via mobile
thanks because he has been DHing for Rome and I don’t think he has played 3rd base yet
