Jair Jurrjens put together another solid start and Matt Diaz hit his third home run in as many games to give the Braves the edge in the opener of a three game series vs. the N.L West leading San Diego Padres. The Braves have now won all four of Jurrjens starts since he returned from the disabled list, and he has allowed just six runs in 24.1 innings pitched over that span. With the victory, the Braves now have a .5 game lead over the Padres for the best record in the N.L.
The Padres opened up the scoring when Chris Denorfia hit a solo shot in the second inning, but Jurrjens kept their bats at bay from that point on. Jair ended up with a line of 7 IP 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K. The strikeouts are great to see as Jurrjens isn't known to be a strikeout pitcher. Lefties Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner finished off the game by throwing an inning each and striking out a batter a piece while allowing no base runners. Wagner earned his 22nd save and Venters earned his 11th hold. For the 63 of you that picked Jurrjens to give up the first homer, you were right. Fortunately, he did so and the Braves still came out on top.
Offensively, the Braves were struggling until Matt Diaz hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Diaz put one over the left field fence after a Troy Glaus walk. Matty also added another RBI in the seventh inning as he singled off of Ryan Webb to make it a three run game. Jason Heyward went 3-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Heyward killed the ball all night, and if he is able to produce like he did before his injury, the rest of the N.L. is in serious trouble. I predicted that Jason would have a good series in the preview and he is definitely on to a good start. Martin Prado added his 26th double of the season and also walked and scored a run.
More after the jump.

Padres starter Wade LeBlanc pitched well, allowing just two runs over six innings, but he made a mistake to the one Braves batter lefties cannot make a mistake to in Diaz. LeBlanc pitched better than I expected. The Braves are still struggling against left-handers, which is not a good sign, but thankfully the Braves can win these low scoring games due to having one of the top pitching staffs in baseball.
Up next is Jon Garland (9-6, 3.45 ERA, 4.41 FIP, 4.44 xFIP) vs. Tommy Hanson (8-6, 4.19 ERA, 3.34 FIP, 4.01 xFIP). Garland allows a good amount of line drives and the Braves generally hit righties pretty well. If Hanson throws a decent game, the Braves have a great chance to take the series tomorrow night.

Great win
and good pitching.

And the padres are gonna walk mccann to get diaz welL clearly there thinking….i dont know what the hell there thinking!!
ottie - July 20, 2010
And yes
i know that was the right move by the padres that was still what was going through my mind
ottie - July 20, 2010
Hahaha
So true. I love it. With Diaz’s hot bat you don’t really want to face him right now. Although he’s still better than Big Mac.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Great win.
I love what Heyward and Diaz have been doing lately. JJ seems to be back to his 2009 form, too, which is awesome. Now we can just take tomorrow’s game and win the series.
Biggest division lead in baseball, baby!

Getting guys healthy
If you’re a big believer in “getting our guys back from the DL is like making a big trade without giving up anything,” then this was the game for you. None of the guys that were instrumental in winning this game were playing for us a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully McLouth figured things out while he was away also.

Lizziebeth - July 21, 2010
The only thing that soured me about this game
was DOB saying we had 2 assistants in Florida and most likely have a deal for Cody Ross in place if McLouth doesn’t come back strong.
other than that it’s good to see Heyward bgetting some hits and Diaz back to his old lefty bashing self.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
yick.
Sir Stealth - July 20, 2010
No. Hell no.
No Cody Ross. Is that clear, Frank Wren?
hawves - July 20, 2010
I read this today concerning the players we are looking at:
It goes on to say that all other than Cody Ross, would take very much in return. Do we really want to give up the Farm to get one of the more valued players? I don’t….
HEYJUDE - July 21, 2010
If the alternative is Ross, then yes, I do.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
I would prefer to sit pat
as to trade the Farm, but that’s just me.
HEYJUDE - July 21, 2010
Agreed.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
I think we should let the “Healthy Braves” take this team to the pennant and more.
I’d hate to give up any of the guys we’re putting out there right now.
NCChopper - July 21, 2010
Ugh
I’m actually really, really happy with Diaz/Melky/Heyward right now in outfield, with Hinske and Blanco and McLouth coming off the bench.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
i dunno
about the melky part
but i do wish we would give Diaz a full time shot. He’s hitting righties about as good as Hinske in some ways
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
As someone explained
Last night in one of the other posts, if you take out the April statistics, Melky is actually hitting okay. Not great, but relatively okay since then.
Anyways, I feel like I’d rather have him than Cody Ross, even though Ross has some decent numbers this year.
sag969 - July 20, 2010

Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Ben, so glad to see you’ve started the funny/snarky photo comments as well too :)
Zeus12888 - July 20, 2010
Great game
I love seeing Matt Diaz when he’s hot. Gotta be my favorite player. Heyward bouncing back is great news too, if he can regain April/May form, then watch out!
Only concern was seeing Jurrjens give up another long ball. Good thing about that was that he buckled down and pitched solid the rest of the game, albiet some great plays from the defense. I’m talking about Melky’s throw in the first, McCann’s two strikes to Prado to stop two potential stolen bases, and Gonzalez’s great stop/turn in the 8th inning that was this close to being an incredible double play.
Oh, and what is the deal with Blanco? I thought he was being sent down for McLouth? I didn’t have the volume up for the whole game, so not sure if I missed it when they talked about it, but I was surprised to see Blanco come in the 8th inning. Anybody know about this?
sag969 - July 20, 2010
mclouth
wasnt called up today…..tommorow blanco will be sent down
d1gram420 - July 20, 2010

Sounds like he took BP today though.
I guess you’re allowed to take batting practice and not be on the active roster.

rumors here in philly..
im surprised this hasnt gotten any national attention, maybe bc its impossible to know for certain.. but for the last 2-3 weeks its been rumored that werth had an affair with utleys wife and the phills are GAURANTEED to move werth by the deadline.. Im not saying i believe the rumors but its been all over the radio stations and local reporters.. personally i wouldnt want a guy of that character on the braves and he really hasnt hit worth a damn for the past month or so… take it for what its worth but interesting nonetheless
PhillyBrave - July 20, 2010
seriously?
wow…
esadb - July 20, 2010
shades of Delonte West or Ashley Cole….
that would explain Utley’s “injury” as he probably punched through a cement wall (he looks like an angry individual)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Ashley Cole?
who is that?

i always knew Werth was a ladies man just look at that beard
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
"Ladies Man"?
I’d use the term slut. Well, maybe a greasy, grimy whorish slut. Got to observe it up close during the “on-field batting experience”. Bleech.
Lizziebeth - July 21, 2010
Yay...
I like the description.
sddbaker - July 21, 2010
OMG!!!! I heard about this the other day
I go to school at a community college in Cleveland, TN and some girl that goes there is somehow connected to Chase Utleys wife and told me about this. I thought it was probably all just hearsay until i read this.
From what she told me theres also some risque pictures of JW and Chase’s wife at CBP floating around
ATLBRVS_19 - July 21, 2010
I visited Cleveland when I was looking at colleges and let me just say, entirely non-insultingly, my condolences. I’d go stir-crazy in a place like that.
What is it with the MLB connections down here, though? Huddy has a cousin on the women’s basketball team at my school in Jackson, TN. If I didn’t know better I would’ve thought she was his daughter, the resemblance is pretty strong.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010 via mobile
I gotta tell u man I know a girl that goes to school at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson
right next to Jackson and i cant stand that side of the state. I guess you just prefer home best
ATLBRVS_19 - July 21, 2010
I'm with you on this
I attended FHU in Henderson for two years before transferring closer to home. The only good thing I miss is the close friends I made.
I live in Chattanooga now, just a 20 minute drive from Cleveland, I would take this area over W.TN, anytime.
Each to their own……
HEYJUDE - July 21, 2010
It’s a rather long story, but I was born and raised in Memphis, and I’m with you folk- I HATE it there. I was accepted to Georgia Tech but couldn’t afford to pay out-of-state rates to attend. I got a great scholarship offer from a school in Jackson, though, which got me out of Memphis without going somewhere as small as Cleveland. I was probably headed to UT Chat if not for that.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010

ATLBRVS_19 - July 21, 2010

Will she be included in any deal for Werth?

J-Freak - July 21, 2010
Utley's wife obviously has lost her taste in men.
Werth? Yuck.
NCChopper - July 21, 2010
they probably met before he was drafted
and that’s okay
southman - July 21, 2010
what
is a companion trade?
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
They would trade Werth to a seperate team to clear payroll
esadb - July 20, 2010
So....
Would the team that takes Werth be another contender? In the AL? The teams that the Phils would be willing to trade to that would want a guy in his contract year seems like it would have to be fairly limited.
Sir Stealth - July 20, 2010
my guess
is that Werth goes to the Rays.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
Who would the Astros get? Davis or Nieman maybe?
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
i dunno
im not really per-say worried who the Astro’s get more than I am if the Phillies get Oswalt and some BP help.
Really wish we could get Gutierrezz, Adam Jones, or Josh Hamilton.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
Josh Hamilton?
…
I think we’d have better odds of trading for Roy Halladay.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Hamilton?
AL MVP front runner…good luck getting him
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
If we offered out Mississippi team, we might be able to get him
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
If we wanted Hamilton
They’d prolly want our Myrtle Beach team more because JT, Vizzy, Delgado, Jones blah blah blah…
But if we wanted Hamilton we’d say see ya to Red, JT, Vizzy, Schafer and MORE!
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
We could try to offer Mississippi, the state.
Pavy848 - July 21, 2010
I dont know if we have that kind of authority but im down
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Couldn’t hurt to try.
Pavy848 - July 21, 2010

I don’t know, it could be cool. Every 90 feet you would have to turn left and you could go before the light turns green.
BullManUGA - July 21, 2010
if its a companion trade they are separate deals….thus the Phils will get some prospects from the Rays for Werth
and then in a separate deal the Phils will give up prospects to the Astros for Oswalt….
unless it is a three way trade (but its not being reported as such right now)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
ok
I thought a three way trade was being discussed
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
idk if it is or not…I’ve heard companion trade, which to mean isnt a three way trade, but i could be totally wrong
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
hmm
would be nice if we could get Ben Zobrist from the Rays.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
I feel like Zobrist is the most untouchable position player not named Longoria on that team…he is ridiculously good at baseball
I have a full man crush on Ben Zobrist (no homo)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
he's so valuable
he’s like omar infante with power and is an everyday player…to think Infante is valueable this guy is way valueable

lol
just a wish
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010

20HRs, 80 RBIs, .290 BA and plays every position except Catcher and pitcher… just would be too expensive for my blood
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
i bet he can catch and pitch…..at the same time!!!!!!!
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010

Red sox, Giants, Pads
esadb - July 20, 2010
Pads make sense
for a RP and a prospect
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
I'm assuming
A multi team trade. Although I really have no clue.
Any odds that Braves get Werth, send prospects to Marlins, and Phillies get a starting pitcher from Florida?
Haha, I can dream, right?
sag969 - July 20, 2010
i dont like where this is going
esadb - July 20, 2010
Why worry?
we essentially got a FOR starter via Jair Jurrjens and didn’t have to deal any prospects for him.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
Eh
Oswalt is overrated in my book, and wayyyy too expensive.
If they trade Werth in order to get Oswalt it’ll come off as a desperate move and a last gasp chance to stop losing ground to the Braves.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Oswalt
would actually make that rotation really good. Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt, Happ and whoever they want for a 5th starter.
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
yep
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
I guess
I think the money is the bigger thing to me.And after taking a quick look at his stat line I realized that he’s having a much better year than I thought he did, so I stand corrected.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Wow
From Stark’s article on ESPN:
“While there was no indication the players in any potential trade have been agreed to, the Phillies have shopped last year’s rookie-of-the-year runner-up, J.A. Happ, who is currently pitching in Triple-A to work his way back from a forearm strain.”
I realize this is far from final, but losing Happ in order to get Oswalt seems like a really stupid move to me.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
i would be upset if that was all they gave up
regression’s a bitch
esadb - July 20, 2010
Whatddya mean?
I view Happ the same way as I view Hanson. Both have the potential/talent to be top aces in a few years.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Im still not a believer
esadb - July 20, 2010
on account of last year's
4.30 fip, 4.50 xfip, .270 babip
esadb - July 20, 2010
I really
Don’t have a great handle on what all those numbers exactly represent, but Hanson’s numbers for the same categories last year:
3.5 fip, 4.03 xfip, .280 babip.
Is there really that big of a difference?
sag969 - July 20, 2010
.5
its pretty big, yeah. especially considering the substantial age gap.
esadb - July 20, 2010
Yeh, it’s a pretty vast difference. It’s even bigger when you look at what Happ had done in his career to that point, it’s a humongous gap in talent levels.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
I'll bet $5 right now
that J.A. Happ never again has an ERA below 3.50 in a full season as a starter.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
Done
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
haha
good luck collecting on that one if it does happen!
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
The variation in ERA’s from season to season is so vast that it may happen again, but it doesn’t mean that he will be the reason for the low ERA. He’s not a very good pitcher and doesn’t do anything particularly well on the mound.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
i dont give a shitabout reasons I will just want my $5
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
I said that he would be out of the rotation by the end of this year – I didn’t count on an injury making that happen though…lol
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
WHAT! You crazy?
Hanson has 3X’s the potential of Happ…Happ is already 27 and isn’t all that great
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
this, this
a bajillion times this
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
Maybe
We’ve really only had one full season from Happ, and he went 12-4 with a 2.9 ERA and 1.2 WHIP. This year he made two starts getting one win while posting a 0 ERA before he got hurt.
All I’m saying is the guy has some real potential. And age doesn’t mean anything, Prado is 26 and having the best year of his career.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
you didnt use a single stat that means anything…with the philly offense most pitchers would have a winning record, with the phillies defense most pitchers woud lhave a low ERA, and neither of those are good indicatros of skill…WHIP is semi-useful
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
you are crazy if you think Happ has the same potential as Hanson…Happ has the potential of a 2 if everything goes perfectly as planned, more likely he is a solid 3 or a good 4…
he could be one of those guys that completely defies all odds and ends up an ace, but those guys are pretty rare.
Hanson on the other hand has everythign you want in an ace and at worst is a nbr 3.
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
except
a changeup
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
thats probably true…but he his curve nad slider are good enough to get out lefties…bvut if he doesnt develop a change he will never reach his full potential you are correct.
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
He has but doesn’t throw it enough
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
this
2 is his potential. More like an ok 3 and a solid #4
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Really? Happ does not have the stuff of Hanson. I see him more of a mid rotation starter
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
agreed
houston has to demand more than that..
oswalt has been such a great pitcher for so long…last year he wasnt so good, but he has returned to form this year…he is waaaay underrated i think…if he pitched for boston or new york (or philly for that matter) u wouldn’t stop hearing about him…
forgotten_glory - July 20, 2010
they better be
getting Haren if they are trading Happ
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
Is Happ even back with them yet? Even if he is, why does he scare people? Happ is not that good, neither is Hamels.
And, IIRC, the Braves have pretty much had a good time with Oswalt over the years.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
Like I told you a long time ago, you and I agree on far more than we don’t. Hamels will never regain his ’08 form and Happ is a # 3 or so, optimum.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010
Hamels' 08 "form"
was mostly just luck. He’s a good pitcher—about a 4.00 ERA naturally—but he’s no ace.
Happ is a #4—if he’s lucky.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
Thyat's pretty much what I meant.
About Hamels. At least her parlayed it into a funny commercial.
I despise Happ and I usually encounteer resistance other places if I tell what I think of him. I need to remember that I’m among sane people here.
For the most part.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010
He is expensive but a very good pitcher. If, the Phillies get him, I not worried though
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
The Phils offense is awfully crappy right now, so taking away one of their consistent bats is ok with me.
Pavy848 - July 21, 2010
how can amaro explain trading for a starter
when he let cliff lee go this past offseason, which has to be the dumbest GM move of the year, also doesnt oswalt make more than Lee this year? i just dont see how he can do it without admitting he made a HUGE mistake
PhillyBrave - July 20, 2010
esadb - July 20, 2010
Snark hurts
Especially true snark.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010
Well
I think that’s so obvious that it doesn’t need to be even said. Not keeping Cliff Lee was one of the worst GM moves of the year.
sag969 - July 20, 2010

i saw philly and automatically though Phillies fan…my bad
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
thats what i was saying...
PhillyBrave - July 20, 2010
It's already the worst contract in MLB
no need to wait. That contract doesn’t even START until after next season. Terrible.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
is it really worse than Wells contract?
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Yes.
After this year, Wells is owed $86M for 4 years.
After this year, Howard is owed $145M for 6 years plus a buyout.
Wells is probably the better all-around player right now (if this year is for real and not a fluke). At worst, it’s about even. Which contract would you rather have?
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
i would rather not be stupid and not have either contract…but gun to my head I guess I take Howards…his production isbetter and at least close to his contract… if you havent figured it out i have no faith in Wells…
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
I guess.
But Wells has been slightly more valuable this year and has a better body type. Howard has “washed up at age 33” written all over him (and he’s already 30).
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
its really a battle of who has the worst body type….Wells is not suited for CF anymore and he is an average corner at best at this point…which i guess is better than an average 1B….
we can agree both contracts are bad and both GMs are dumb
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Paying Raul Ibanez 11.5 million next year is a close second on that team, what a waste of money.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
Yes, that is bad...
but it’s only one more year. That just can’t compare, really.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
You’re right. The fact that Ryan Howard commanded so money and Adam Dunn commands nothing compared to it is outlandish. They are literally the same player offensively and defensively, yet Howard does subway commercials so he is more valuable. In a sense, he is because people buy more jerseys so he does bring in more money, but from a baseball perspective he is not worth that much, especially when you consider how old he’ll be at the end of the contract.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
someone just read the fangraphs article….
i kid, it was interesting in that it confirmed what I always knew….Adam Dunn is cool and Howard isn’t any better
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
I was actually talking to Jack earlier today when he was tweeting about it, then he wrote it. I haven’t actually read it though.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
he does great work… always look forward to his articles
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Agreed.
Howard is better (but not good) defensively, but then Dunn has been better with the bat this year.
Really, both of them are American league players, and both deserve to make around $12-15M per year. Instead, Dunn makes $10M and Howard makes $20-25M. Oh, and I wouldn’t sign either guy to a more than 3 year deal.
It is funny the way perceptions color GM’s judgements.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
hasnt Jim Hendry done anything stupid this year?
he’s usually my choice for dumbass of the year
the Howard thing was horrendus way worse than anything the LEe deal brings…the Lee deal can be defended, the Howard thign cannot…its crazy no matter how you look at it
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
i think the idea was they wanted the prospects and thoguth Happ could provide good value this year, unfortunately for Amaro that didnt work out…If Happ is healthy the rotation doesnt look nearly as bad… and they are set with prospects and wouldnt have to give up Dominic Brown
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
i can understand they needed prospects in the system but they are a team built to win now not the future
PhillyBrave - July 20, 2010
this
They should have kept Lee. He said he wanted to rebuild the system, but the prospects aren’t doing too hot right now.
Braves24 - July 20, 2010

didn't everyone hate Wren this offseason
but he looks brilliant now and I can’t say im not a Frank Wren fan, although i to didn’t think he did enough this offseason
93 games into the season and a 6+ game lead in the division and Wren is a great GM!
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Speak for yourself, broski. I’ve been a Wren fan since Day 1.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
okay...many people hated Wren
shouldn’t have called out “everyone” because i some people did always like Wren
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
He doesn’t do so well on trades, but he’s not afraid to fix something that isn’t working.
He also got rid of Jeff Francoeur, so he’s my BFF.

Lizziebeth - July 21, 2010
I've thought hes done great on trades
Kotchman for LaRoche almost got us to the playoffs, and Gonzalez and prospects for Yunel is too early to tell but i like it even though esco has done well in Canada
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Yeah
I’d even throw the Vazquez trade in there too.
Who knows how well he would have done this year in Atlanta, but it looks like we sold him at highest possible value and got some really good prospects (and I guess, Melky) in return.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
forgot about melky trade
but yea i wanted JV gone before the trade and we got a good OF(he’s been very strong lately) and one of our best prospects…i though that was a great deal
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
teixeira for kotchman and marek…
yea he got lucky to find laroche on sale in return for kotchman (good trade) but the initial trade was awful…even looked like it would suck at the time…
i think where wren really struggles is PR…he treated a braves legend (glavine) like shit…i don’t disagree with his move to call up hanson instead, but he didn’t have to lead glavine on like he was going to pitch and then at the last second pull the plug…
forgotten_glory - July 21, 2010
Who knows
What really happened with Glavine. From our view it looked really bad, but it might have just been that the Braves were wary of him the whole time and realized (albeit at the last minute) that he was going to hurt them.
I think it was handled poorly, but I wouldn’t lay that all at Wren’s feet. I’m sure John Schuerholz and Cox had plenty of input as well.
sag969 - July 21, 2010
here’s the thing and hopefully this wont turn into a drawn out conversation
that was the best offer at the time…Kotchman was cheap and had potential and was already a good ML player (he looked to be at worst a Mark Grace type)….
there was never any reports of anotehr deal and there just werent that many teams looking for a 1B…
Wren knew he wanted to compete the following year and couldnt take the risk we would get the draft picks
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Well, at the risk of drawing this out...
That was an unquestioned STEAL for the Angels. If that’s the best possible deal, you laugh, hang up the phone, and collect the picks at the end of the year. There was absolutely NO risk of him accepting arb. With his numbers, 1b vacancies in Boston and New York, and borA$$ as his agent, there was no way he was gonna stay here for a year for a maximum 1.2x his 08 contract instead of cashing in big time.
Even if that was the best available deal for a 1b, which I suspect it was, if you’re selling him you’re punting 08 anyway, we could have let someone like Prado finish that year at first and sold Tex for the best overall available player, regardless of position.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010 via mobile
Wait, so Wren is stupid because one trade didn’t work out, and he is lucky because another trade did work out?
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
no
i’m saying he’s lucky because laroche performed way better than expected…did anyone really expect him to put on the laser show he did? he was unbelievable, and he played way better than he has in the past for the second half of that year…
the trade seemed maybe like a small upgrade at the time…not the huge upgrade that came relatively close to pushing us into the playoffs…
forgotten_glory - July 21, 2010
At the same time, Kotchman performed way below what anyone expected up him…see? It’s like Colin Ferrell – it goes both ways.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
lol
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
The people who think Yunel would have hit those homers in Atlanta should also believe that he would have gotten injured as well, and both are ridiculous notions. Nothing Yunel does in Toronto should have any bearing on Wren’s decision to trade him at the time he did.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
Very true.
His numbers should improve the 2nd half simply by hitting in a more hitter-friendly environment.
UMDBHIK - July 21, 2010
this
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
people love him in the regular season, and hate him in the offseason. its a yearly cycle.
esadb - July 20, 2010
Eh
Plenty of people hating him in the last week. Refer to copious arguments about the Escobar trade for evidence.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
I can question one of the man’s moves without hating him.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
How about Uggla in LF =]
ShawnG - July 20, 2010
can he
play LF?
my only concern is that he would cost more than Ross
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
A really quick glance
At baseball-refernce shows that he’s spent all five years at 2B. Looking at minor league records he spent about 20 games (out of about 500) in the outfield, so I’d say that’s a big no.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
If someone can play 2B, they can play LF.
justincredubil02 - July 21, 2010
I agree, but...
Dan Uggla can’t play second base, so that sort of spoils the truth of the point.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010

Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
Great game!
JJ is looking like he is back(which is great cause he’s my fav player)
JHEY also looks like he’s back
Matty D is back…and although we play a RHP tommorow please let Matty D be in the lineup
Also looks like Phillies on verge of getting Oswalt, and I know we have a huge lead on them but Oswalt would really help them so don’t underestimate this trade if Philly makes it
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
I can't decide which kind of Diaz hit I enjoy watching the most
The no-doubt homers are always fun to see, but then so are the hits where he reaches across the plate to slap an outside pitch or, like tonight’s RBI single, goes upstairs and fights off a pitch to muscle it into the outfield.
And that single was on a 95 mph fastball from a RIGHT hander.
Great to have him back!
JohnDrake6 - July 20, 2010
I like it
when he steps back only to step back foward to crush a ball into the gap
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010

JohnDrake6 - July 20, 2010
I like watching our Caveman hit the ball.
There’s an excitement that he brings to this team I’ve been missing with his injury.
It’s like as long as Matty is there and may get an at bat, anything can happen.
NCChopper - July 21, 2010
Today was a great win!
Jurrjens pitched great, Heyward looks like he’s back, and the Phillies lost again! If the Mets lose, that would be even better!
TonyAlmeyda - July 20, 2010
Well
Mets are on their way to that. Down 3-0, six innings out.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
mets down 3-0
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Jason Heyward is back
and everything is well.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
HE NEEDS TO MOVE TO THE 6TH SPOT BECUASE HE LOOKS MORE COMFORTABLE THERE RAWR
RABBLE RABBLE
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Haha, that’s one of the worst arguments I’ve ever heard on TC. The Braves just aren’t the same team when Heyward is hitting in the 2nd spot.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
Can anyone get the record of the team with JHEY batting #2 opposed to any other spot
it has to be drastically better when he is #2
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
it doesnt matter what the record is…its what makes most sense going forward…a majority of the time he spent int he 2 spot he had a hurt thumb…the dropoff between him and the next best 2 hitter is huge….whereas we have capable players to bat 6th…
Heyward needs to get as many ABs as possible and has the skills that make a good 2 hitter
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
im defending him batting #2
the team has been much better with him there and Martin leading off
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
I know I’m just saying it doesnt matter what his number or the team’s nbrs suggest, bc there is a variable that cant be accounted for goign forward (how much impact the thumb injury has on his production)…so we need to go with a decision based on his skills…and that is that his skill dictate 2 hitter right now (obviously 3 hitter going forward)
Im cutting off the argument that we do better when he bats 6th before it can be brought up, hopeuflly
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
#3 going foward?
i was always under the impression Freeman would bat #3 and JHEY #4 for the future
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
that could work, but Heyward is the better hitter and generally the better hitter bats 3, althought in this case, Freeman’s lack of power (or preceived lack of power, specifically 30HR power) it might make more sense to bat Heyward 4….
But Heyward just seems like a 3 hitter to me…either way we are in tourble…with our three best power hitters all being LH (McCann, Freeman, and Heyward)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
we are in trouble?
thats scary to all other teams
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
i didnt phrase that right….but we will need some RH power at some point… because a good lefty specialist will do well against our 3-5…but we should eat RHP alive.
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
hopefully, Salcedo
Braves24 - July 20, 2010

Braves24 - July 20, 2010
we dont have any power RH bats…i dont think…
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
that’s what I’m thinking
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Maybe Joe Leonard.
He’s a very advanced hitter, and although his power numbers weren’t great in college, he has the physique of a power hitter, and before he “only” hit two singles today, he was 6-17 with 6 XBH in his first few games with Rome.
J-Turn14 - July 21, 2010
yea
but doesn’t he play 3B?
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
Doesn't matter
LH > RH. You see RHP considerably more than LHP. Right-handed heavy starting pitchers and left-handed heavy lineups are the easiest ways to get the most out of your players. Most lineups and rotations have more righties than lefties.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
i know…and at the end of the day I want the best player regardless of what hand they use….so its if this is our biggest problem we are in great shape
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
I think
A 2011 lineup that is Prado/Heyward/Freeman/McCann is pretty impressive. Assuming Chipper comes back he can go anywhere in that order really.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Chip bats #3
chip never bats anywhere but #3 unless he is batting #4 or pinch hitting
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Yeah
That’s why i said he could go anywhere.
But, assuming a three spot, I guess it would be:
1. Prado
2. Heyward
3. Chipper
4. Freeman
5. McCann
sag969 - July 20, 2010
no way freeman bats 4th in his rookie year
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
i'd put FF #6-7 to start the year
much like how we did JHEY this year
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Alright
So, one year from now, maybe Freeman is batting 4th.
:-D
sag969 - July 20, 2010
doubt it
probably JHEY…if chip comes back of course
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
2011:
Prado
TBD
Heyward
McCann
Werth
Freeman
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
Werth...
i love it we get my favorite non-brave
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
haha
You won’t get off the Werth bandwagon will you?
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Why would I?
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
you realize Werth is only a good idea, its not a good practice….
the amount of money and years he will take wont be a good value
anything over 4 years and its not a good idea
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Will he get more than 4? I’m thinking a Jason Bay contract.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
werth is wayyy better than jason bay
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
i bet he gets 5-6…but i really dont know…I’ve been pretty bad with my offseason FA predictions the last couple years (outside the ones I had a bunch of knowledge about, Cameron and Glaus)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
that’s what he is looking for. I wouldn’t give him more than three years
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
More along the lines of Torii hunter
esadb - July 21, 2010
No Jayson Werth is actually good
sorry i have a strong presumption against Torii Hunter
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
I’ve always loved Hunter and his game. I don’t think you and I have ever agreed on anything.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
i love Werth…he has great hair and a wonderful beard
I would love to have hiim on the Braves but i think at best we offer 4 years 14M and that wont be enough..
my distaste for Werth is more of a realistic thing, not necessarily a distaste for Werth himself (he is a great player and if money isnt an issue i want him on my team)
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
for this reason
He has two good seasons and already 31
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Some guys develop later than others. He’s also a physical freak, and in great shape. I remember seeing something on MLBN and it showed how he’s one of the fittest guys in the league.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
I don’t not doubt that at all. He looks very fit and is pretty athletic. It’s just I would be very hesistant to give him a Bay type of deal
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
he’s much more deserving of a Bay deal than say…. um… Jason Bay
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
definitely
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
If Chipper retires we can afford Werth.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
That depends
If we use Chipper money on Werth, what’s left to find a 3B? Maybe if a SS if Gonfailez continues to not wow everybody the rest of the year and his option is passed up? A closer?
I’m certainly not saying we CAN’T get Werth, and at the end of the day a Braves team with Werth in the OF is an excellent team, I’m just saying with Glausosaur leaving (presumably, but not automatically, being replaced by Freeman), Chipper and Wagner retiring, and potentially having to re-fill the hole we just dug ourselves at short, there’s no guarantee that a metric crap-ton of money is unloaded in the outfield. Winning the whole thing this year in order to convince Liberty to open the pocketbook a little wider would certainly help… ;)
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
We’re not going to replace Gonzalez at shortstop, I’m about 99% sure they’re going to pickup the option as FW said the option was one of the reasons they pulled the trigger.
Trading Lowe and even eating some of his contract, maybe even half, would clear some extra money as well.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
Gonzalez's option
is so cheap, he’s a steal even if he slumps all year. $2.5M for a defense-only shortstop is EASILY worth it. That is a fantastic contract.
I just don’t know if we can afford Werth AND a good-hitting 3B to replace Chipper.
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
Well, If Werth and Freeman together were to roughly replace what we’ve gotten out of Chipper and Glaus combined, we don’t have to go for a top-tier 3B, which is good because the only one really worth going after is Beltre, which means a bidding war, or overpaying for A-Ram. We might be able to snag a guy like Cantu or Peralta for a decent price though, and either one would be OK hitting low in the order with some combo of Prado, J-Hey, McCann, Freeman, Werth, and probably our CF batting 1-6.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
Cantu is horrendus in the field….and gives back everything he gains with his offense….unless he is playing 1B he just isn’t worth it
and why overpay for Werth when we can overpay for Beltre…he is soo much cooler
Swo12bv - July 22, 2010
Yeah, I didn’t look up the UZR numbers before I said that. A-Ram and Beltre are the top two, then there’s a steep drop-off to Juan Uribe, then another steep drop-off to everyone else. Peralta is fourth, because his offensive numbers are at least serviceable and he’s only slightly below average defensively. After those 4, you’re really getting down to dregs. It’s a very thin free agent market this year, so we better bet on either overpaying Werth to take over center or overpaying Beltre to take over third, and finding a way to flip a pitching prospect to someone to fill the other hole. There’s just no depth on the FA market to fix all the holes we’re going to have.
J-Freak - July 22, 2010
Eh
I like Werth as much as the next guy, but he’s going to cost a pretty penny next year. Plus our biggest future hole (I think) is CF and I don’t think Werth can play there.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
We’ll have the money to sign him, and will need to sign a power hitter if Chipper leaves.
Also, go looks at MLBTR’s FA list for 2011 center fielders. Try to not LOL.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
Wow
That list is depressing.
As for the money, after looking at this: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tujElf32-2d237jk3IzWLsg&output=html I guess its possible, but he’ll be sucking up a lot of our dough.

Werth Can Play CF
He is their centerfielder when Victorino is out. 18.4 UZR/150, given it was in limited playing time. He is more valuable than Bay due to his ability to play centerfield.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
Hot damn
I knew he was an excellent defender over there in right, I did not realize though how good he was in center. Even if he’s a quarter of that UZR/150 over a larger sample size, WE MUST CAN HAZ. He solves our need for right handed pop, a little speed, good defense, and a reliable CF all in one fell swoop. Definitely Werth (see what I did there?) the fat contract it’s going to take to lure him.
Sadly though, I have this feeling in my gut that Wren isn’t going to bother unless he can unload McLouth somewhere. Now I know what I want for Christmas this year.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
Speaking of Chipper
Assuming he does NOT come back next year, any real ideas on who would be starting 3rd baseman?
I doubt Braves want to make Infante an everday starter and lose his versatility, so is there anybody in the minor leagues who would come up or would this need to be a FA?
sag969 - July 20, 2010
I really hope he gets healthy and starts hitting.
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
probably a FA or trade
because we dont have anyone in the system who could be an everyday 3B
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Adrian Beltre
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
He’s really the only good FA option. I worry that he’s just playing big for his next contract, but I’d take him for 2-3 years.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
even if he hits like he did in SEA…he is still worth almost 10M and Id pay him 4 years at 40M (I’ve already said this, but its worth reiterating)…his defense is soo good he barely needs to hit at all to be valauable…at 10M he basically replaces Chipper’s dollars (and should be a better hitter and defender, obviously we lose having the best Brave on the 90s and 2000s but it is what it is)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
I wouldn’t like him on a 4-year deal…I don’t think he’ll last that long, but I’d certainly take Beltre on a 3-year deal in a heartbeat.
An infield of Beltre, Gonzalez, Prado and Freeman would be pretty sick, assuming the reports on Freeman are accurate.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
Freddie’s defense is plus from all accounts. I’ve talked to people that have seen him and read scouting reports that love his defense, which is great to hear. I guarantee our 3B will be someone that nobody is thinking about right now, it’s how it always works.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
So like, if it’s Beltre, does that mean you’re buying our first round?
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
yea
I hope Chipper gets healthy and rakes so he can returnn next year. If he doesn’t then, I’d be interested in Beltre but wouldn’t pay ten million a year for him and that’s what he is looking for
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
since 2002 Beltre has been worth less than 10M twice (2003 he was worth 9.4 and 2005 he was worth 8.4)
so far this year he is worth 15 M….
words cannot express how good he is and how underrated he is…its a shame
easily worth 10M
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Ah…i thought Beltre was like 33 or 34. He’s only 31. Interesting.
Scott Coleman - July 21, 2010
wow
I know his defense is great, but I'm not sure his bat is good enough for 3B right now. He sure is having a great season thoughBraves24 - July 21, 2010
all you have to do is look at the numbers and once they are park adjusted (he played in a park that severely depresses offense and HR) and then you see he is a fine offensive player and in the top half of all 3B . Then when you see he is the best defender of the position its a no brainer for me.
But maybe Im too optimistic…I loved the signing for Boston and will probably love the deal he gets this offseason (assuming he doesnt exervise his player option, which could reach 10M if he reaches the PA limit)
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Your not too optimistic at all. I thought Boston made a great deal when they signed him. How many Hrs would he hit at the Ted?
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
20 ish would be my guess he consistently hit 20-25 in SEA and thats a good start…
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
lol @ beltre’s 10 WAR season in 2004.
ridiculous.
get swoll yunel - July 21, 2010
ya he had a good year
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
*cough*
steroids + contract year
cough
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
there is absolutely no evidence of steroids….but ok….
it’s weak to use anecdotel evidence and say “o he must have been on steroids”….back in the day tons of players would hit a bunch of HR in a year and there was no explanation for it…just bc someone does it now doesnt mean he was on the juice….
not to mention why would you only take it for one year.
the contract year thing, I cant disagree with, except to say his one of his worst seasons was 2009 which was also a contract year
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Nice
I actually like that a lot.
sag969 - July 21, 2010
glaus maybe?
forgotten_glory - July 21, 2010
1. He will cost too much for his production, age, and injury risk due to this season.
2. He’s lost a lot of range at 1B, wouldn’t be good enough at 3B to play there.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
JHEY
can hit LHP really well though
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
He hasn’t yet, he can. It’s only been under a half season of healthy at bats. Give him time, he will adjust.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
I would switch the two
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
BUT BUT BUT HE DOESNT LOOK COMFORTABLE (disregarding the thumb injury and whatnot)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
I'll admit
I was wrong about wanting to see J-Hey move down, but I admitted that initially too. I also would have no problem with it if we got a player that fit that spot really well and Bobby decided to move him down.
Pavy848 - July 21, 2010
thats another story…if we get a guy who is a good 2 hitter than I would consider changiing my stance…but that is unlikely…
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
hey arizona bullpen
you know how you suck? well, could you like, not suck, for this game only?

7 innings of 3 run ball
??not well… lol im not watching so am i missing something
dc_allday - July 20, 2010
He’s been lucky all night. Quite a few balls have been hit to the wall that were caught.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
oh ok
thats pretty much whaat i figured. nice hes over his head (i think)

dc_allday - July 20, 2010
Dickey not doing well
Takahashi not doing well
Pelfrey has been awful
niese has been good
and Johan has been very good as always but 3-5 pitchers struggling…nice
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
This reminds me
Of that post on bleacher report.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/420686-the-new-york-mets-are-team-to-beat-in-nl-east-not-atlanta-braves
I wonder how that author feels now.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
haha
i saw that post and just though how rediculous that he thinks Pelfrey is better than JJ!
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Not surprising
They had a really weak group of starters headed into the season and then a few pitched really great during their hot streak the last month or so.
Pavy848 - July 21, 2010
Talking about Arizona Mets
Yesterday, One of the play was Francouer groundout to K. Johnson. K. Johnson to A. Laroche
joshant - July 20, 2010
haha
all you need is blaine boyer pitching and you have an ex-braves superparty
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
Boyer pitched the 6th and 7th innings
joshant - July 20, 2010
Hahahaha
Priceless.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
That’s a crapload of ex-braves on the Francoeur ground out.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
It's like a Royals game!
Jacob Peterson - July 21, 2010
Frenchy grounded out to 2nd?
no way!
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
that is rare, he usually rolls over pitches trying to pull and has a weak grounder to short…him goign the other way even on a groundball is almost unheard of…or at least thats what my memory serves at the moment
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Lately
He’s been swinging at pitches over in the left hand batter’s box and popping them up to foul territory behind first. I’ve seen him do it 3-4 times.
Glad that he’s expanding his horizons and finding new ways to make infuriating outs.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010
Freddie Freeman showing more power...
hit another double tonight, which was number 24 on the season.
He’s also 20-years old, which is pretty cool.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
in AAA
also pretty cool
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
That is pretty cool
But assuming Glaus doesn’t get injured, he probably won’t appear till 2011, right?
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Yeah, the only way he’d come up would be if Glaus goes down for the year and the Braves really feel like he’s ready.
No reason to start his clock until we have to.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
Unless I’ve really got the arb rules screwed up in my own head, we’re past the point where he accumulates enough service time for the arb schedule to be affected. In other words, whether he starts for us tomorrow or Opening Day 2011, his first arb year should be exactly the same. But somebody correct me if my info is off-base.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
You're right
But he would still be eligible to be a super-two, which I’m unsure if they are willing to do or not. We’ll find that out if they give him the job in ST.
One of the reasons I’d like Ross is that when we lose Glaus, we’re probably going to be getting Freeman up. Replacing Ross for McLouth would give another right-handed bat and although left-handed bats are better, having a few righties is a good thing.
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
With you on the Ross-over-McLouth thing. The only thing the Super Two does at this point is add one additional arb year to the end of his service time though, it wouldn’t advance his first one.
J-Freak - July 21, 2010
yea prolly right
i mean he’s again only 20 so no need to rush him
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
if FF makes the show next year
we’ll have a FF, a JJ, a KK, and maybe a MM.
atl192485 - July 20, 2010
mm?
esadb - July 20, 2010
Mike Minor
Assuming he’s not trade bait.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
He’ll be up after we trade Lowe at the trade deadline, at least that’s what I’m hoping for
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Uhm, really?
I guess if teams get really desperate they’d take Lowe and his contract, I just don’t see it happening.
Anyways, I’m one of the few Talking Chop fans that is pretty content with Lowe this year.
sag969 - July 20, 2010
Yea I know
it probably won’t happen. He has been decent this year, but if someone ask me to pay 9-15 million of his contract to trade him and get a good pitching prospect in return, I would jump all over it
Braves24 - July 20, 2010
Eh,
Maybe. Because in that situation the Braves would probably put Kenshin back in rotation rather than bringing up a prospect.
sag969 - July 21, 2010
Lowe has pitched a little bit better than KK but is getting paid twice has much
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
Yah
I’d say more then a little bit better, but you’re right – it is a fine line.
Either way I’d rather not have either of them eating up $22.5 million of our roster.
sag969 - July 21, 2010
yep
I’m not sure how Lowe has been alot better than KK. But anyway what you said about the roster is sad but true
Braves24 - July 21, 2010
Youngest Player in the International League
BenDuronio - July 20, 2010
2nd youngest
Jay212033 - July 21, 2010
He was the youngest at the start of July, I suppose someone was called up who is younger?
BenDuronio - July 21, 2010
Excluding the Braves/Padres game, the total runs for/against Eastern division Teams Tonight
If you add up the combined runs in all the other games involving Eastern division teams it comes to:
Opponents: 28
Eastern Division: 2
(Mets@Diamondbacks in bottom of 7th, all others games are finals.)
JohnDrake6 - July 20, 2010
Woops, Washington@Cincinnatti WASNT a final...
I must have made them mad, the Nats scored 6 runs in the 6th.
JohnDrake6 - July 21, 2010
NAts has scored 3

Butttt…why is this important? :-D

This just in:
Albert Pujols seems like one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet in your entire life.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
i just watched it to
and that is such a great thing for those kids… if i were a 15 year old kid and was very sick i’d probably ask for JJ, JHEY, or BMAC
KINGSLYTUT - July 20, 2010
Gotta go for Chipper in his last year.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010
I watched it also,
Pujols impressed me, he appears to have a compassionate and giving heart. He is the type of player the young ones can look up to as role models.
We have a number of good role models on our team also.
Sweet story :)

Xshare - July 21, 2010
Watching the end of that game took me back in time.
That kid who pitched his ass off standing in the dugout, nervously watching as some schmoe held his win in his sweatly palms. Reminded me of Smoltz and Glavine in ’89 and ’90 and some of the yo yos we had trying to seal the deal for them then.
Sam Jethroe - July 21, 2010
Read some comments above about the phils
IMHO.. If they trade werth they just lost offense.. Who’s to say utley will come back good? Also trading an offensive piece away and gaining a better starter doesn’t sound like a winning deal to me… The only way i could see this as a win.. Is if they kept werth and made the move for oswalt and they may not be financially able to do so. Jmho.
SidGlaus - July 20, 2010 via mobile
they will promote Brown and he is supposed to be pretty damn good…but he wont be as good as Werth (right away at least)
Swo12bv - July 21, 2010
Optimal decision would be to stand pat and play Brown for Ibanez. The 11.5 million owed to Ibanez for next season is awful, and he has been terrible this season as well.

that the braves turned it around? That one series where KoJo was hurt and Prado was in there and has started since, Diaz was raking, and it really jump started the braves lineup. It was a little after the break, right? Wondering when’ll be the 1 year anniversary.

BREAKING NEWS
AP – In a shocking trade, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros in a three-way agreement that involved the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta will receive Roy Halladay in the deal, and will ship three "mid-level prospects to be named later " to Houston. When asked why he gave up Halladay, Ruben Amaro, Jr. said to reporters, “Oswalt is an ace. We really need a front-of-the-rotation starter here. Plus, two Roys on the club is one too many.”
