Apologies now for the short update due to me nearly cutting off the tip of my finger and driving 7 hours today.
Gwinnett 6, Scranton/WB 2
All three of our major prospects on this team contributed with Craig Kimbrel throwing 2 scoreless innings to end the game. He did allow 3 walks but he struck out 4 in that span. Vintage Kimbrel!
Mississippi 3, Mobile 1 - Game 1
The rare good start for Jacob Thompson gives Mississippi the win in the first game of the rainout doubleheader. Tim Collins closed the game out and was credited with the save but struck out no one.
Mississippi 2, Mobile 5
My boy, Willie Cabrera, has been doing slightly less work since the All Star break but might have busted out of the mini slump with his first extra base hits in over a week. Also he has 3 homers this month after having just 2 the rest of the season. His 11 XBH so far are also the most for any month so far and he has 1 1/2 weeks left to add to the total.
Wilmington 2, Myrtle Beach 0
Our big guns have struggled a bit during the last month of the season but I would say that Randall Delgado had a nice bounce back game tonight and put himself in the running for the hotsheet next Monday.
Rome - Off
Danville 7, Pulaski 8 - 12 Innings
Just so you know, Carlos Perez allowed baserunners in this game but 6 of them reached in the first inning. He still almost got out of it with a double play but gave up a couple of hits to allow all three runs. He then settled down and was his usual dominant self.
Apparently Matt Lipka cannot handle being the top man on the Talking Chop hotsheet. Also Danny Falcon is enjoying the weaker competition in the GCL.
DSL Braves 1, DSL Tigers 6
None of the runs that Abraham Espinosa allowed were earned as his defense committed a couple of errors that led to bunches of singles that didn't count towards his ERA.

I'm calling now calling our young first baseman FFF, or triple F
Freddie Fucking Freeman
That’s what say every time I see the way he is going gangbusters since May in AAA. I’m super excited for this kid.
ATLandUNC - July 20, 2010
like TRIPLE H….i like it
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
I like to call him F2
Like an F250 or an F2 tornado.
I guess F3 would work too.
BrockSamson - July 20, 2010
wait
cut off the tip of your finger? yikes i hope all is well
drumzalicious - July 20, 2010
Agree...
hope it’s not too bad.
Mr. Sanchez - July 20, 2010
Freddie Freeman is an animal.

a sex panther
yondaime4 - July 20, 2010
60% of the time….it works everytime….
bashby20sh - July 20, 2010
and he’s putting together a great year.
its gonna be pretty difficult for the Braves to not install him as the permanent 1B after next spring.
fandave - July 20, 2010
More free money to get Jayson Werth.
Scott Coleman - July 20, 2010 via mobile
and its also really excellent to see our young Mundo-Nobo-ian SS, Andrelton Simmons, having some offensive success. although one obviously can’t draw too many conclusions from 89 AB in a rookie league, his performance so far has to be considered hugely encouraging.
fandave - July 20, 2010
Simmons
He’s playing outstanding defense but he only has 3 XBH out of his 20 hits so he’s not hitting all that well. I still think he ends up on the mound.
Jay212033 - July 20, 2010
what I said was “some offensive success”. please note that he’smaking some consistent contact given the minimal K rate, and just had a 3 hit game.
further, in that he has only 23 G experience in his professional career and is reputed to have elite defensive tools, maybe we should withhold judgment for another week or so.
fandave - July 20, 2010
Nice!
I’m so glad Freeman figured out AAA pitching, he’s really turned it on lately.
BigG1392 - July 20, 2010
will he hit .300 this year with 18 homers?
if he does than how can he not be ranked ahead of Jesus Montero who had one good year and is terrible defensively.
Jaymin Patel - July 20, 2010
But he plays for the Yankees!
cbwilk - July 20, 2010
you have to admit though…Montero’s offensive ceiling is soo high he is a better prospect than Freeman…I love Freeman he is gonna be a very good player and a possible all-star….but Montero sure seems to have much better offensive tools…and seeing as 1B isnt where the m ost skilled defenders are, Montero being an average or bad defender there isnt a big deal (especially not bc he can DH)
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Having seen both play several times, Freddie will reach his ceiling, Montero won’t. Montero simply can’t catch at the highest level, he seems to have boulders for hands, so he’s going to be a DH. He’s strong and has a solid swing, but he’s not very determined and doesn’t really make adjustments. They have Austin Romine at AA and he’s a much better prospect. I don’t think much of Montero at all, and I definitely don’t think he’s better than Freddie.
cbwilk - July 20, 2010
they are essentially the same age, at the same level...
Freddie has in slightly more ABs, more 2B, more HR, fewer K, an average above .290 vs. below .270, and over 60 points higher in OPS. I know scouts all say Montero has the amazing skills at the plate, but so far in AAA, he’s done worse than Freeman. Because of that, I wouldn’t be so sure that he’s automatically so much better with the bat.
Mr. Sanchez - July 20, 2010
fair enough to both you and CB
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
Gwinnett
I was at the G-Braves game tonight and Freddie’s HR was a bomb. Minor threw very well, his one mistake being an opposite field HR that was barely fair and barely out (hit the top of the fence and bounced out). Hicks and Schafer looked helpless at the plate, although Brandon made an amazing play deep in the hole at SS. They looked good last night; hoping I can get outta work to go tonight too!
bashby20sh - July 20, 2010
Few questions
-can Freddie Freeman play 3rd if asked to do so?
-can Troy Glaus lose some weight and become a 3rd baseman again?
-what positions do Willie Cabrera and Wes Timmons play as they can be temporary solutions along with Brooks Conrad to play 3rd?
-what’s the timetable on Lipka and what’s his earliest projection?
-finally, didn’t Simmons say he will never pitch when he signed his contract?
Jaymin Patel - July 20, 2010
-He began at 3rd in the GCL, but was pretty quickly moved to 1st. He has since become a great defensive first baseman, so I doubt they would even consider moving him back.
-Glaus is a 3rd baseman playing at 1st, he could play 3rd again. He’s only 33, and looked pretty solid at 3rd just a couple seasons ago.
-Willie is an utility outfielder. Wes is a utility infielder, with great defense at first, second, and third (not sure how he plays at short). Wes is some kind of freak about talking walks and avoiding Ks. Both are backup material.
-His earliest projection is to follow the Heyward route which would bring him to the majors by 2013. I doubt he gets here that quickly though.
-He didn’t say that. It was reported that he signed with us because we told him we would let him try shortstop first before moving him to pitcher.
bwellnjonesco - July 20, 2010
Wes was originally a SS and he can still play it, though he doesn’t get asked to much.
And to add to your point about Freeman, if the Braves thought he could play 3B he would already be doing it, because a good 3B is much more valuable. So while he may be able to fill in there in an emergency, Freddie is a 1B.
cbwilk - July 20, 2010
Id compare Freddie playing 3B to Chipper playing SS…sure they can do it, but thats not something you want to rely on
Swo12bv - July 20, 2010
I'll give it a try
- Freeman played some 3B in HS and has a really good arm(pitched in HS as well topping out at 92) but very rarely do you see a LH 3B not saying that he couldn’t do it but it’s unlikely at this point the Braves will move him.
- I don’t think Glaus’ knees, back or shoulder could handle a full season of 3B.
- Cabrera can play all 3 OF positions but the corners are where he plays above average D. He’s decent in CF but he doesn’t get good jumps on the ball out there for some reason. Timmons has play just about all IF positions except maybe SS but 3B is his natural spot, his bat has been very good and in ST he did very well. Hopefully Timmons will get a shot in Sept.
- Lipka is looking very, very good so far but he’s very, very far away. I say maybe 2013 at the earliest but more than likely 2014 but who know he could break out in an make it sooner like Sept. 2012.
- If Simmons had told the Braves that I can almost bet he would not be a Brave now. I really hope his bat does play out though cause from all the reports his defense is second to none and he has potential leadoff type speed so that would be much needed in our lineup.
Jay212033 - July 20, 2010
Pretty sure that Freeman bats lefty but plays the field right handed.

This
yondaime4 - July 20, 2010 via mobile
You are correct sir
I could’ve swore when I saw him in Rome he was throwing LH but that was a couple years ago.
Jay212033 - July 20, 2010
I’m with you Jay, when I saw him in Rome I remembered him as a lefty/lefty…but then looked further and saw he’s right handed when in the field. Odd.
Here’s a picture for you that confirms it. :-)
Dave_D - July 21, 2010
Great to see Delgado bounce back and Freeman continue to rake

Freddie Freeman is the next Kieth Hernandez.
Also, I hope your finger is okay.
