Right handed pitcher Jeff Lyman was taken off the Altanta Braves 40-man roster and was claimed by the Oakland Athletics. Lyman, a San Francisco native, was selected in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft by the Braves and in his 6 year career he compiled a 19-37 record, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP in 498 innings.
This season, the 6'3", 225 pounder had a 0-0 record, a 4.72 ERA, and a 1.60 WHIP in 34.1 innings for Gwinnett. He was just demoted to Mississippi where he allowed 1 earned run in 1 inning. Lyman makes his home within a half hour of both Oakland and Sacramento, where the Athletics' AAA team plays, so the move is certainly a welcome one for him. Unfortunately, the Braves lose a talented projectable arm, but the unbelievable pitching depth they've amassed over the last few years should easily make up for the loss.

We'll probably just get cash
GouldisGold - July 2, 2010
We don't get anything.
He was cut.
MichaelProcton - July 3, 2010
The original title was “Lyman traded to Athletics” because I didn’t have all the facts yet. GouldisGold was just speculating as to what we might get, as I was in the article when I guessed that it could be a small part of a larger trade.

Headline changed
Since no trade, I fully admit my ineptitude

So I was wrong...
figured with his struggles this year he’d easily pass through. Guess not. Good luck to him, and wonder why he was dropped?
Mr. Sanchez - July 2, 2010
Yeah, I wonder that too. As far as the struggles, there are plenty of teams who see a guy with a 4.50 ERA as a AAA reliever and think that with a few adjustments he could be a good pitcher for them. Personally, I love Jeff (heck, I got this info first hand from him) and I wish him the best out there.
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
I did too.
But they obviously wanted a spot on the 40-man open, it’s easy to understand why they picked him. Don’t like to see a guy regress like he has.
MichaelProcton - July 3, 2010
He isn’t the first relief pitcher from the 2005 draft who went to Oakland. Joey Devine says “Hi!”
eaheckman10 - July 2, 2010
Shit. He was a good signer too.
nick9314 - July 2, 2010
Indeed.
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
I wonder if this means a trade is in the works? They wouldn’t try to drop him from the 40 man for no reason.

Geography?
Just because I’m bored…
I spent a lot of time in Oakland/SF/San Jose on business. Sacramento is at least 2 hours from Oakland.
I worked with some guys who lived nearer to Sacto and commuted to San Jose every day, and that isn’t even as far as the bay area from Sacto.
To be a half hour from each would be pretty impossible…maybe an hour to hour and a half from each…
Like I said, just because I was bored….

I’m just relaying what he told me. I’ve never been west of Nashville, so I have no clue.

Define Jargon Please
what exactly is a “talented projectable arm”?
MarvelGoose - July 4, 2010
He’s got some good stuff, even if he doesn’t know how to use it just yet, and you could project him toward becoming a Major Leaguer, even if it’s only as a fringe reliever.
