All-Star Selections
First baseman Barbaro Canizares and left handed pitcher Mike Dunn were selected to represent the International League in the AAA All-Star game. Former Braves farm hand Tyler Flowers was also selected for the team as the starting catcher.
Mississippi had 5 players selected to represent the South Division in the Southern League All-Star game, catcher Orlando Machado, outfielder Willie Cabrera, outfielder Cody Johnson (who was selected as the DH), right handed pitcher Brandon Beachy, and left handed pitcher Mike Minor, who will be unable to play in the game due to his promotion to AAA. Johnson's selection may come as a shock to some, but many Minor Leagues choose to put top prospects in the game in an effort to sell more tickets. If nothing else, he should put on a heck of a show in the Home Run Derby. Of course, he was placed on the DL today, so there's a good chance he won't play in the game anyway.
Gwinnett 4, Toledo 2
So, I was completely wrong when I reported yesterday that Freddie Freeman had a 20 game hitting streak going. He took an 0-fer on the 24th. But he does have a 7 game hitting streak going and is hitting .370 with a 1.233 OPS during that span. He also stole a base for the second straight night, doubling his season total from last year. Mike Minor was outstanding in his AAA debut, limiting a veteran Mudhen lineup over 7.2 innings. He's been much, much better than many expected. In other news, Craig Kimbrel is way too good to be in AAA.
Mississippi 2, Birmingham 1, Game 1
Willie Cabrera continues to excell, rapping out 3 hits and stealing a base. Tim Gustafson had a 5.87 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP in 61.1 AAA innings, and was walking more than he was striking out, so he was the guy who got sent down when Minor was called up. But he was able to dominate tonight and hopefully he'll right his ship at AA.
Mississippi 8, Birmingham 9, Game 2
As a starter Richard Sullivan has a 6.50 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP in 62.1 innings. As a reliever he has a 3.72 ERA and a 0.62 WHIP in 9.2 innings. Obviously, it's a much smaller sample size, but it couldn't hurt to just keep him in the pen and let him build confidence.
Myrtle Beach 4, Kinston 6
In his 2 starts after the All-Star break Randall Delgado has allowed 9 earned runs in 9.2 innings. The odd thing is that he didn't pitch in the All-Star game and he was working on the same amount of rest as usual. Most likely he's just slumping right now and it's a complete coincidence. Myke Jones extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Rome 2, Greensboro 9
Riann Spanjer-Furstenburg (I don't care what anyone says, I just like writing that) extends his now 4 month hitting streak to 10 games. Ramon Flores returns to Rome with a 2 hit night. He spent all of April with the team before being sent to Extended Spring Training and hit .333 in 8 games for Danville the last few weeks. Caleb Brewer had his first poor start for Rome and after allowing just 1 earned run in his first 3 starts, covering 16 innings, he's allowed 6 earned runs in 8.2 innings over his last 2 starts.
Danville 3, Princeton 6
After hitting .287 with a .732 OPS in 87 at bats for Rome, demoting the 22 year old Jace Whitmer to Danville seemed like an odd move, but he does get to play catcher regularly without Christian Bethancourt getting in the way. He got off to a slow start for the D-Braves, but hopefully his 3 hit day today gets him going. This year's 4th round pick, David Filak, took the tough luck loss tonight, but the big right hander has been great in his 2 starts, allowing just 1 earned run in 8 innings.
GCL Braves 4, GCL Braves 2
Matt Lipka stays hot, with 6 hits in his last 16 at bats. Zeke Spruill made his second rehab start and hopefully he's getting closer to returning to Myrtle Beach. Luis de Luna was stellar, pitching 4 shutout innings to close out the win. The 20 year old Dominican spent the last 3 years in the DSL, racking up a 2.08 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP in 73.2 innings there last year.

Great looking line for Minor
As you said, he’s really surprised people, myself included. Nice to see him proving the “experts” wrong.
Scott Coleman - July 2, 2010 via mobile
And up until I “talked” to him last week, I was happy about it….
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
Wait…what?
Scott Coleman - July 2, 2010 via mobile
ahh don't tell me he's a jerk when it comes to interviews....
hopefully he was just in a bad mood
don’t let it get you down wilk, you do a great job with these milb recaps
kbertling353 - July 2, 2010
I don’t think it’s that he’s a jerk when it comes to interviews…or that it was any kind of particular day…
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
So....
is he, like, dating your sister, or something?
frozendesert - July 2, 2010
you are being so cryptic…
telemakhos - July 2, 2010
So he’s a jerk all the time? Not just when it comes to interviews or on that particular day? That’s disappointing…
ducheneaux13 - July 2, 2010
What?
A young pitcher drafted in the top 10 who has a sense of entitlement and stardom and is a jerk because of it?
Surely you jest.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
can you just tell us what happened so we don’t think he killed your cat or graffiti’ed your house?
telemakhos - July 2, 2010

This reminds of The Godfather, part II
Don Corleone talks to the dog lady’s landlord, and the landlord, not knowing who he is, blows him off. A short time later, the landlord comes to see Don Corleone, and his falling all over himself apologizing and offering to let the dog lady stay for $5 – no $10 less per month. Give it a few days. It’ll happen.
buzzdeadwax - July 2, 2010
Freddie stole another base!!!!!! haha! Doubled his total from last year!
jdmarine - July 2, 2010
You called it.
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
I take no credit sir! Just piggybacking off of your always hard work! haha!
jdmarine - July 2, 2010
Noting those 2 steals, does Simmons have plus speed?
Zeus12888 - July 2, 2010
Possibly, he seems like they type, 6’2" 170, sounds long and rangy.
cbwilk - July 2, 2010
Sounds good to me. Thanks for all the hard work CB. You're the shit!
Zeus12888 - July 2, 2010
Jimmie Johnson was just on the television
trying to make me buy something to make my manhood larger. What the F…
Scott Coleman - July 2, 2010
LOl. When i saw that commercial i thought I was watching SNL or some shit.
I’m excited about Filak. I know he played against weaker competition, he has good stuff & he might end up being a steal.
Thanks for the updates as always CB.

Fandave
Did you attend the Rome game yesteday, if so did you find out anything on Salcedo and why he’s not playing yet?
Jay212033 - July 2, 2010
He's
checking out that Coliseum he’s heard so much about.
frozendesert - July 2, 2010
good grief people
He’s here. He was in uniform – wearing #15. He’s supposed to play tonight (Friday). When new players come in they are usually given a couple of days to transition while all the business end, paperwork, etc gets taken care of. Same thing happened with Cunningham and Gosselin but no one seemed inclined to be so disbelieving about them…..
And FWIW the transaction rosters are notoriously slow about being updated so are NOT always a timely source of information until after the fact a lot of the time…..
rbravesfan - July 2, 2010
Because for the last 2 seasons salcedo has been like big foot to prospect watchers. An actual, intentional appearance where multiple people can.see him simultaneously seems too good to be true
yondaime4 - July 2, 2010 via mobile
a-ha.....
yondaime4….check your e-mailbox…..lol.
rbravesfan - July 2, 2010
When does Milligan come back??
With RSF back, now all we need is Adam to come back, and my favorite position players from last year will be back in action.
garlick - July 2, 2010
So, I don’t think it’s pushing it to say that Minor will be in the rotation at the beginning of next season. But whose spot does he take? Does Medlen move back to the pen? Do we get rid of Lowe? Does KK get another shot at the rotation? Interesting to think on.
I know that Minor is impressing with his strikeout numbers in the minors, but I still think he will top out as a #3 guy in the rotation, which is just fine by me. Especially for a lefty.
Also, does anyone think Teheran will move into the rotation at some point during the 2011 season? I don’t think they’ll consider him for the start of ’11, no matter how dominant he is in spring training. But despite his age, he may be ready to move up to Atlanta after May (arbitration clock and all).
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
Teheran has at least 2 more years of minor league pitching ahead of him
He needs to dominate AA next year, and AAA for a year before they move him up.
I also am not 100% sold on Minor being in our rotation to start the year next year. You may see him as a late call up, when an injury occurs.
Pitching depth is great, and often time needed. If Hanson was any indicator, the Braves will wait till half season to promote him. That was also when the Braves were hurting for pitchers. Now with our surplus, I’m sure you’ll see guys moving up to the big leagues slower than they have in the past.
Kimbrell is another perfect example. He’s too good for AAA, but we just don’t have any good place to put him on the ML team right now, and get enough work to keep sharp.
garlick - July 2, 2010
An injury or trade aside, I don’t expect Minor in the Majors next spring. Seems like he’s moving pretty fast, 14 IP last year, then AFL, then AA and AAA this year. I’d guess he stays at AAA until at least this time next year, maybe later.
bighop - July 2, 2010
Keep in mind that Minor was the most major league ready pitcher in that year’s draft and is on a quicker development schedule than most of our other prospects. Many baseball gurus were saying that he’d be ready to pitch in the majors towards the end of this season.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
OK, but who does he replace? KK is the next scheduled to go away and he’s around until the end of next year. Do we put Medlen back in the pen to make room for Minor? I’m glad Minor is in AAA facing more advanced hitters, he needs that, if we trade someone or lose one to injury, he’ll be closer to ready. I just don’t see an open spot for him for awhile.
bighop - July 2, 2010
Well, D. Lowe’s salary may be a bit easier to trade after another season off the books. Although that may be hard to do, I find it to be a bit ludicrous to have a guy on the team making as much as he is, being our 5th best pitcher (behind Medlen) and then holding back younger more promising pitchers. I would think that Wren would try and find some way of fixing that issue.
KK, despite his record, has had some good performances, and if the contracts were different, it would be Lowe moving to the bullpen, and not KK. That being said, a trade for Kawakami may be more likely than one for Lowe.
I hate to say it, but by the time the offseason rolls around, Medlen and Jurrjens will be mighty good looking trade pieces for a bat that could potentially replace Glaus, Chipper, and/or an outfielder.
All in all, I fully expect at least one of our current 6 starters not to be in the organization next year.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I think it would be a big mistake to trade the young guys away. Lowe, Kawakami, and Hudson most likely do not figure into the braves plans once their current contracts run out (with the possible exception of hudson). That leaves Jair, Tommy, and Medlen with 2 spots to fill from minor leaguers (or overpriced free agents like lowe). If you trade one of the young guys, then you have to come up with 3 capable starters from our minors. That’s an incredibly tall task considering pitcher attrition rates. I hope that we can find at least one good one from our bunch of top prospects, but 3 is asking wayyyyy too much. Our rotation might be great right now, but its success does rely on some older guys and you can’t underestimate the value of young pitchers.
telemakhos - July 2, 2010
I agree, I’d hate to see us trading away Medlen or Jurrjens or any of our young pitching prospects. However, even though we won’t be keeping Kenshin or Lowe after their contracts expire, they’re not easy pieces to trade and they won’t get near the return a Jurrjens or a Medlen would. Keep in mind that once Lowe and Kawakami’s contracts are up, we’ll have a ton of money to go towards a starting pitcher to fill at least one of those voids. And by 2012, Minor and Teheran should be able to fill two others.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
True, they won’t be easy to trade, but that just goes to show how quickly a strength can become a weakness and back again. The fact that lowe is our 5th best starter now after he was such a big acquisition in bolstering our weak rotation speaks to that. I think if our young guys prove that they deserve a spot in the rotation, only then do we work to open one up for them. If we could move kawakami right now, that would be excellent, because he’s already the odd man out after medlen proved he belonged.
If you trade away pieces from the core of the team’s strength, then in a few years, the age will get to the rotation and it will be a weakness again. As far as hitters to replace chipper and glaus, I’d rather bank of heyward and freeman with a capable free agent 3rd baseman. Saito and Wagner are coming off the books, just to name a few, and we should have some money to play with. If you mortgage the future, eventually it will come back to bite you.
telemakhos - July 2, 2010
I think he will replace KK whe his contract expires or if we can trade Lowe at next year’s trade deadline
Braves24 - July 2, 2010
"Minor was the most major league ready pitcher in that year’s draft"...
Mike Leake would like a word with you.
Mr. Sanchez - July 2, 2010
He'll have to come find me first.
CHEESE IT!
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
Good points.
And the fact that we’re not hurting for pitching does give a good chance that Minor will at least be a mid-season call up next year (after May). However, we are hurting for left handed starting pitching, and if Minor performs well in AAA from now until the end of the season, having his arm in the rotation would be invaluable.
As for Teheran, barring any setbacks, I fully expect him to be in Gwinnett at the start of next season.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
No way Teheran is in AAA to start next season
He’s in A+ ball right now, and has only pitched 28 innings so far. The season ends in September down there, and even if he pitches lights out, there’s no way they move him up to AA in time to get enough work at that level to get him to AAA by the start of 2011.
He’ll be in AA to start next season, and THEN if he dominates like he has, he’ll get moved up to AAA fairly quickly.
And as you stated, that’s without any setbacks at all.
garlick - July 2, 2010
Woops
For some reason I thought we had just promoted him to Mississippi, but I just remembered that it was a move from Rome to Myrtle. So yeah, he will probably start there next year unless he absolutely dominates at the AFL and spring training. However, if I’m not mistaken, I don’t think Tommy Hanson spent much time in AA either, right?
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
98 innings for Tommy in AA
So about 100 innings, give or take a start or two, is the goal.
garlick - July 2, 2010
Yeah...
2012 is definitely the target year. And it will likely be June of 2012 no less. But if this kid continues to dominate, it’s going to be hard to hold him back. And that is a good problem to have.
pancanbra - July 2, 2010
This might be a stretch
More often than not, we assume the prospects will take their roles on the big club in the order of Minor, Teheran, DelGado, eventually Vizcaino. Maybe DelGado before Teheran. What about the others? Beachy, Diamond, Hoover, Ortegano, et al. Chances are, with minor league pitchers, we have some attrition, bad luck, blow outs, injuries, trades, and they never see the big club. The Braves are lucky, we’ve got a bunch of pitchers with a chance to make an impact. Hanson, Jurrjens and Medlen could still be around in 2013, leaving only 2 open spots for starters. Or they could be traded or out for Tommy John, God forbid, and we need 5 starters by then. These guys will be brought up when they are ready and when there is an opening. There’s no telling when either of those things will come around.
bighop - July 2, 2010
Sorry my bad
44 innings for Teheran in A+ this year…..I read the line wrong….still he spent 80+ innings in low A, and he won’t get that number in A+ ball till August, so he’s not going anywhere yet.
