That was a nice way to start the 2nd half.
Jair Jurrjens was pretty good on Thursday and went 6 2/3 innings and only gave up 5 hits on the night. The Brewers scored their only run on the 4th pitch of the game when Corey Hart hit his 22nd HR of the season to right field.
The Braves offense struggled with RISP, but Martin Prado and Chipper Jones both hit solo-HRs in the 3rd to put the Braves up 2-1. Alex Gonzalez had a solid debut and went 1-for-3 with a 2B and BB. Jason Heyward also returned and despite going 0-for-4, took some great swings and hit the ball hard.
The bullpen combination of Moylan, Venters and Wagner was fantastic (yet again) and worked 2 and 1/3 innings of shutout baseball. Only Moylan allowed a base-runner on an infield single from Hart.
The Phillies are losing getting killed in Chicago and the Mets have a tough game against Tim Lincecum in San Francisco, so it could be a profitable night for our beloved Bravos.
Full recap to come.

i didnt think jj was great at all
i thought he got pretty lucky to only give up 1 run considering how many times he was hit hard. great play from the outfielders, though
Bravo! - July 15, 2010
You’re right, I changed the headline a bit.
Scott Coleman - July 15, 2010
saw a re-play of Heyward’s awesome play in the RF corner. fair pole was lucky the padding took part of the blow.
fandave - July 15, 2010
Jason’s defense may be a bit underrated. He made some good plays in the OF tonight. He’ll get going soon, don’t worry about him.

we need a new NAHWAL question – minutes/seconds on BBTN talking about that braves/showing highlights….
MBL1 - July 15, 2010 via mobile
I was
really excited to see Blanco in CF tonight then he goes and pulls this smh
Where’s DeJesus!!!
drumzalicious - July 15, 2010
What did Blanco do?
Bronn - July 15, 2010
Nothing special
unless I missed something, while eating dinner.
HEYJUDE - July 15, 2010
I mean, box score says 0-3
Which isn’t really a big deal. Blanco’s been playing over his head a little bit and he’ll come back down to normal, but he’s playing pretty well in CF and getting on base, which is exactly what we need from him.
Bronn - July 15, 2010
Oh, I get what you’re saying now…..
HEYJUDE - July 15, 2010
The real question is
Why is Blanco hitting eighth? I guess the answer is obvious, he’s a subpar hitter, but that hurt us at least once tonight.
Bottom of the 4th, Gonzalez comes up and hits a double. Blanco is at the plate. Normally in these situations, Blanco would bunt towards 3rd base and sacrifice Gonzalez over, but still have a really good chance of beating out a single since he is so fast.
But, Cox can’t do that because Jurrjens is right behind Blanco. So, he let Blanco hit, and he flies out to center. Then Jurrjens comes up and for whatever reason Cox doesn’t ask him to bunt either.
Overall that inning kind of annoyed me. I think it’ll be better for Gonzalez to hit 8th, that way Blanco can get on base for him.
sag969 - July 16, 2010
Because bunting a runner to 3rd with one out is a dumb idea.
justincredubil02 - July 16, 2010
As a left handed hitter, it should be relatively easy for Blanco to pull the ball and move the runner to 3rd. A failure to do so in a tight ball game was disappointing.
LEastCoastBears - July 16, 2010
This is what I was replying to.
justincredubil02 - July 16, 2010
nothing
that was kind of my point by saying “he goes and pulls this” saying that he has a bad night.

SidGlaus - July 15, 2010 via mobile
Why do I read that in a Latino accent?
Oh right: Scarface. When he says he’ll “kill those fucking cock-a-roaches!!”
Makes sense. The Mets are very into the Latin-American influence. I could totally see Minaya saying “Say hello to my little friend” when he’s announcing that he, say, traded for Luis Castillo.
Jacob Peterson - July 15, 2010
Oh, I got the quote slightly wrong:
What do the Mets have against Matt Diaz and his brother?
Jacob Peterson - July 15, 2010
Also, this:
Jacob Peterson - July 15, 2010
Irony
Matt has a few brothers
but his most famous one (other than Matt himself) is Johnny Diaz
who is a really good Christian singer.
So the Mets hate a good Christian? Tisk, tisk, another reason to dislike them.

Feels even better with the Phillies losing.
I think Philly is delusional. Yes they have Ryan Howard. Yes they have the artist formerly known as Jimmy Rollins. But man, that pitching staff is terrible. Halladay and Hamels are about the only two pitchers on their staff that would even crack our rotation.
kalesi - July 15, 2010
Without Utley
They’re not hanging in this hing.
Bronn - July 15, 2010
I agree
HEYJUDE - July 15, 2010
Halladay would do a lot more than crack our rotation
and I’d take Hamels over Lowe any day, but that said…we roll 5 deep bitches!
foxrobe - July 15, 2010
Even the pen. Who in their bullpen would you want? Lidge and maybe Romero? Heck, Romero would be the fourth best LEFTY in the pen.
kalesi - July 15, 2010
Ugh
Contreras, I think. He could be a long guy who’s also solid in high leverage. Take him over Chavez. And I MIGHT take Lidge over EOF, change Venters to a LOOGY, and then hope he’s a bit better in the 8th then the 9th.
Bronn - July 15, 2010
plus
he won’t have to deal with omar infante and mclouth to give up game-winning hits to
atl192485 - July 15, 2010
He absolutely crapped the bed tonight
Zeus12888 - July 16, 2010
Contreras, that is
Zeus12888 - July 16, 2010
I don't want Lidge.
(not with his conract anyway). And Romero would be like our 7th best left in the pen. I’d rather have Tim Collins.
Jacob Peterson - July 15, 2010
Lidge
Coughed up a 3 run lead in a rally that started with no one on and 2 outs in Cincinnati a few weeks ago. His offense covered his ass in the 10th but he’s very, very apt to do that.
Plus, I wouldn’t want a closer who wets himself whenever that Pujols commercial comes on TV.
Sam Jethroe - July 16, 2010
I remember saying in the offseason that our offense is not THAT far off of theirs, and that our pitching was WAY better, and that gave us a good chance to win the division.
Yeah, people thought that was dumb.
justincredubil02 - July 16, 2010
Additionally
Our roster is fairly young on average (and poised to get younger as the next few years roll along), while the Phillies have a lot of guys who wore Zubaz pants in high school.
Sam Jethroe - July 16, 2010
I can easily picture Moyer in a pair of Larry King's suspenders.
VivaLosBravos - July 16, 2010

justincredubil02 - July 16, 2010

exactly. my comment:
fandave - July 15, 2010
Hopefully he doesn't have any soreness that lingers
That said, it was obviously a hell of a play. I thought Frenchy got very slow jumps on the ball, but did well when he could get a head of steam going on a play in the corner. Heyward got a better jump on the ball and was flying into the corner on that play. Francoeur wouldn’t have gotten there.
I think I like our new RFer.
Hey-Maker - July 15, 2010
A couple thoughts about that
1. Heyward is so big when I saw the hit it didn’t look like much initally
1a. Heyward towered over Blanco when the latter came to see how he did
2. Class act by Glaus, Prado, and Blanco to come and check on Heyward and make sure he was okay
3. Class act by Bobby to stay with Heyward and not leave it up to the trainers
4. Big props to Joe West for making sure he was fine. He did his job by first calling the out but came back and made sure Heyward was fine- that’s pretty awesome

Zeus12888 - July 16, 2010

VivaLosBravos - July 16, 2010
Just wondering
any chance Mike Minor comes to ATL when the rosters expand? Or might he make his debut next year? He’s been doing well in AAA but I’m not sure if they’ll want to call him up when rosters expand.
MBL1 - July 15, 2010 via mobile
Don't think so
There’s no spot in the rotation for him next year, and the Braves aren’t going to make him a reliever. I don’t think they’d want to start his arbitration clock until he’s going to start. Then again, he does stand a chance of being traded.

SidGlaus - July 15, 2010
“Francoeur is still running on the fumes of his former potential, but it’s time to realize that he is what he is: A 26-year-old plodding outfielder with a great arm who is capable of hitting some singles when a lefty is on the mound. Does that sound like a player who can help a team in the midst of a nip-and-tuck playoff race? The Mets’ margin of error for making the postseason is already small. Giving playing time to Francoeur only makes it smaller.”

Excellent way to start the second half.
We win, Phillies lose, Mets losing (1-0 in the 6th at the moment). Now let’s keep on rolling. I want to enter September with a huge lead so we can rest guys and get the rotation in order. Check this comment from the writer
Garbage, huh? Well where are all of your superbly argued articles that prove that you’re such the great judge of what’s worthy of being on this site or not, as you inexplicably claim to be.
The fact of the matter is, Beltran is better than Jurrjens, Heyward, McLouth, Diaz, etc. What that means is, the Mets improved the most by getting Beltran back – as I stated in my article. Sure the Braves have played well in the past, and took 2 of 3 from the Mets, but what’s in the past is in the past. All that matters now is what is going to happen in the second half. So while we all just wait and see what happens, I’ll continue to write my “biased” articles and you can feel free to write biased comments
Would you guys rather have an all star, former all star,a legitimate ace,and a lefty killer coming back to a first place team or just one all star coming back from 2 surgeries???
Its just so tough to pick…..lol
AvoidTheDolphin - July 16, 2010
Yeah that was amazing
I liked the “Beltran is better than Jurrjens” bit. He later goes on to say he’d rather have Pelfrey over Jurrjens.
But, my favorite quote is:
I realize he’s a mets fan and all that, but come on. I really hope I’m not that bad when it comes to comparing things.
sag969 - July 16, 2010
hahaha
yeah ill admit if beltran is the player he once was than he is probably the best player of those right now,but saying they improved the most by bringing one player back while we are bringing 4? thats just ridiculous, and i honestly dont believe beltran will be as good as before the surgeries.
AvoidTheDolphin - July 16, 2010
I'm one of the few
that stuck by Frenchy until the end in ATL, and even still I’m [painfully] optimistic that he’ll actually put up the numbers everyone thought he was capable of (heaven forbid it be for the Mets, though we’ve moved on for the better.) BUT in no way does him moving to the bench solidify it for them. He is as streaky as streaky goes, for better or usually for worse. You’d have a better chance asking a pitcher to pinch-hit than a cold and rusty Frenchy…
Whatever, it’s not my problem. Go Braves!
ICan'tChop - July 16, 2010
Hey man
I love Francour the person, but I cannot stand Francour the player.
He’s got an excellent arm, and had a fantastic rookie season, but that’s about it. He just sucks when it comes to swinging the bat.
I think in the first game of the Mets series, he made four outs on six pitches. How ridiculous is that? But does that even surprise anyone.
If Mets don’t drop him this year, its for our benefit. Cause there is no way he ever improves.
sag969 - July 16, 2010
Nah
Best exchange is the author trying to prove Frenchy is an above-average starter by saying he has the same slash line as Melky, and thus is obviously qualified to start and not be a 4th OF. ROFLMAO. As if MELKY is anything more than a 4th outfielder. I love watching dips prove the opposition’s point for them. It brings me much amusement.

Scott Coleman - July 16, 2010

hawves - July 16, 2010
The Braves are so good, they released their better version of Frenchy, Church, long ago. While the Mets cling to the actual Frenchy like he’s a life raft. But this raft is losing air, fast.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 16, 2010
The money quote is the one that said the Filthies and Mess ate both still very much in it because they’ve been beset by injuries. What, like we haven’t? (McStrikeout, JHey, JJ, Saito, Diaz, even He-Who-Was-Unceremoniously-Booted-Out-Of-Town). Cry me a fucking river. Sure the Mess is getting Beltran back, but one player does not a 5 game gap close. At least not without some help from us (collapsing that is; God forbid).

IDK what these guys see in Beltran, but according to the article he is the messiah the Mets have been waiting for to return. So far Jurrjens has been great since his return and Beltran has yet to prove anything and tonight didn’t make this article look so good.
kp.atl - July 16, 2010
Well
From his replies, doesn’t sound like he actually knows anything about Jurrjens, or much about Braves in general.
Jurrjens has been pretty good since he came back, my only concern is that he has a bad habit of giving up long balls. Hopefully that doesn’t become a trend.

until they realized they didn't trade for THAT A-Gon
atl192485 - July 16, 2010
This brings up a good point...
Whatever the baseball merits of the trade, it is worth pointing out that the Braves’ players clearly LOVED it. Obviously, you shouldn’t make a trade based solely on what the players will think, but there is definitely something to be said for improving the morale in the clubhouse like this.
It’s got to feel good for Gonzalez to be greeted like that, too (even if it’s partly just “I’m glad you’re not the other guy”).

And, making him feel that welcome can bring about good things.
No doubt he’ll be wanting even more to prove to his new teammates he’s here to contribute right away.

Jair Jurrjens looks really good. His stats since coming back are good.
One problem might be that JJ won’t have a high pitch count for the rest of the year. He’s not going to go 105 pitches if we needed him. But he worked pretty well tonight. Hopefully he can adjust and still work quick.
ZC1 - July 16, 2010
JJ will be fine. They’ve watched his pitch count these first few starts because he essentially never came out of ST and was given the opportunity to build up to a 100-120 pitch count before the injury, so he’s playing catch-up now. But that’s not going to end up limiting him for the whole year. Another start or two and the pitch count collar will come off. It’s Medlen’s innings they’re going to worry about because he hasn’t thrown a lot of innings in previous years.

Hinske’s personal WS streak was referenced earlier, and I gotta say, I’m already cringing knowing how the rahtards Buck and McCarver will spend the entire Series harping on it.
Buck: “Rabble rabble rabble Eric Hinske is in his 4th straight World Series rabble rabble rabble my dad was famous rabble rabble.”
McCarver: “I used to catch for Steve Carlton rabble rabble rabble. Derek Jeter’s soft skin makes me want to kiss him rabble rabble rabble.”
