Talking With The Enemy: Milwaukee Brewers vs. Atlanta Braves

For the 2nd time this year, I exchanged a Q-and-A with a Brewers blogger from their fine SB Nation site BrewCrewBall.com. As you might have remembered from earlier in the season, we usually exchange 5 questions about our respective teams. This time, we decided to simply answer one question. A big thanks to blogger Nicole Haase for taking her time to do this write-up.

Q: Since the Braves and Brewers last played in May, what has changed about the Brew Crew and how have they played since then?

A: The biggest thing Brewers fans have learned over the past few weeks is to have a short memory. The team seems to be incapable of putting together any long term success and have been just plain awful at times. Most recently they were destroyed in a four-game series by the Not-Known-For-Their-Offense San Francisco Giants. They were out-scored 36-7 and it was by far the lowest part of the season.

Fortunately for those Brewers fans that found themselves on the ledge, the team followed up those four losses with a three-game sweep of the Pirates that features Friday and Sunday walk-off wins to head into the All-Star Break. That will really change your outlook on things.

The worst news for us is that our ace pitcher, Yovani Gallardo, exited a game last week and was placed on the 15 day DL with an oblique injury. This can be a nagging injury and there's no guarantee he'll be healed enough to come back right away. He was the steadiest pitcher in a very shaky rotation, making the injury that much more of a big deal. We have to hope that Gallardo will be back quickly and not suffer any extra adverse affects.

Star-divide

The bright spot in a somewhat inconsistent bullpen has been John Axford. With Trevor Hoffman's early season struggles, the Brewers had to look elsewhere for someone to close out games. Axford is a perfect 10 for 10 in save opportunities since he was brought up from AAA Nashville.

Corey Hart has been the surprise of the offense, leading the team in home runs, RBI, slugging and OPS. On a team of heavy hitters, no one expected the guy who didn't make the Opening Day starters to be the one to have a breakout season. Last year Hart missed much of the season due to injury and struggled in Spring Training, so this power surge is both shocking and unexpected.

At the half way point I'd say that while the team is 8.5 games back from the first place Reds (!), they're pretty much exactly where we expected them to be - third place in the division, one game back from St. Louis, one game ahead of the Cubs.

The Brewers suffer from a lack of consistency from both the offense and pitching and they never seen to be on the same page. This is a team that can unload for double digit runs, but has often left a mediocre pitching staff high and dry. Until they can balance that out, middle of the division is the best we can hope for.

I was hoping for some Hart to Atlanta rumor chatter.

Please no…I hope that trade never comes to fruition.

Ahhh…no! not unless we give them just KK

ok, since they are in need of pitching, let’s salary dump KK for balls, bats, sunflower seeds and maybe one of their top 10 lower minor league prospects.

They ain’t trading Hart for KK.

Apparently the Brewers are shooting for the moon

and really asking for quite a bit in terms of pitching – so most teams are basically saying “oh hell no.” It looks like Hart’s staying put unless some team gets really desperate and plays fast and loose with their pitching

uhhhhh………………………..

haha

WTF HAPPENED TO ST. LOUIS!

i just looked at the AL East again

that shit is stacked

even with how good this team is, we’d easily have less than a 25% chance to make the playoffs from that division

red sox and yankees=too many resources
tampa=too well run

i feel bad for toronto and baltimore

I’d say Tampa Bay just has talent more than they are well run. The athleticism of that team is unbelievable from top-to-bottom.

why do they have so much talent….bc they are well run…

having the #1 pick all those years certainly helps too.

So does being smart...

who all do they have that was a high #1? Longoria, Upton, Niemman, Price, and ? Crawford was a second rounder, so while high he wasn’t that high. Zobrist, Garza, Carlos Pena, Rafael Soriano, Sean Rodriguez, were all pretty smart acquisitions. James Shields was a 16th round pick. They’ve benefited from some high picks, but they’ve also done pretty well developing players and making smart moves. Look at the Pirates, having #1 picks didn’t help them much. Yeah, the Rays maybe got luckier, but they probably also did a MUCH better job in evaluation and development.

I wasn’t disputing that.

I am a closet Rays fan (thanks to going to school in Tampa).

Just wanted that clear...

sure the high picks help, but more than that you need to use the top picks wisely (like for say David Price instead of Tim Beckham), and the Rays have generally made good use of their high picks, done a good job developing their picks, and also been a pretty good deal maker with Soriano for Chavez, Garza and Bartlett for Delmon Young, Sean Rodriguez for Kazmir, Zobrist for Aubrey Huff, etc.

imagine if they had hit with Hamilton and/or Baldelli

It would be totally unfair.

Yeah

sorry about that. We’re 7.5 back from St. Louis

I see a 4-game SWEEP

get your brooms out boys, we’re playing the worst pitching staff in baseball

I’d like to see us come out of the 2d half box with our boom sticks booming away.

not just the wood booming

but the balls breaking the sound barrier as it flies out of the field

Hmm this is funny the m-braves play the huntsville stars in a 3 game series

beginning last nite..and we play a 4 game series with the brewers starting tonite..pretty cool :-) didn’t think about it till now.

The Crew is more than a game back from St. Louis
This day is gonna be sooooooooooooooooooooooooo long

I hate the All Star Break.

ya it's like a really short offseason

but with no football.

NFL Europe, anyone?

I’ve heard that JHey will be back in the lineup in this series….Is this true?

Rumor has it, he will play tonight.

It is highly probable.

God I hope so..

I hope he’s back tonite..If our lineup has been this well without him..how well could it be with the addition of J-hey and Gonzo?

and a good hitting Nate

that throws the ball into the infield after making a catch:)

Heyward should play today.

The Post and Courier
MSNBC

Isn't there a space open

because Jo Jo was on the 40 man right?..but not on the 25 man..hmmm..

Your wish is granted :)

The series looks like this:

Jurrjens v. Bush
Hanson v. Wolf
Hudson v. Narveson
Lowe v. Parra

i love everyone of those match-ups

EOF to DL for infection. Dunn up

that sucks

thank god we have internal replacements

Anyone know when Nasty Nate will be back with the club? He’s looked worlds better in AAA

IDK

but agree he has looked So much better in AAA.

I really want a sweep, but I expect at least 3 of 4. We have the edge in every pitching matchup.
