Third baseman Jordan Kreke collected 3 hits in his Myrtle Beach debut.

IL All Stars 2, PCL All Stars 1

  • B. Canizares 1-1
  • W. Timmons 0-1
  • M. Dunn 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K
  • None of the Gwinnett players started the game, but their team took the victory. Barbaro Canizares had a pinch hit single in the 8th inning. Wes Timmons pinch ran in the 5th inning then flew out in his only at bat in the 7th. Mike Dunn had the best showing of the Braves players, throwing a scoreless 8th inning to pick up the hold, while allowing 1 hit and striking out the side.

    Mississippi 3, Huntsville 9

  • M. Gomez 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB, .260 AVG
  • J. Sucre 2-4, .388 AVG
  • T. Gustafson 4.2 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 3.54 ERA
  • R. Sullivan 1.1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 0 K, 6.16 ERA
  • In 67 at bats with Mississippi Jesus Sucre has hit .388 with a .905 OPS. He doesn't have a consistent track record with the bat, but he has has spurts of greatness. Since he's a superior defender he has a good shot at becoming a backup catcher in the Major Leagues. Richard Sullivan throws a scoreless 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, the only role he's had any success in this year. If the Braves keep him in the pen he could find himself in Atlanta within a year.

    Myrtle Beach 3, Lynchburg 5

  • My. Jones 2-4, HR (2), RBI, BB 2 E (10, 11), .288 AVG
  • C. Harrilchak 2-5, .267 AVG
  • J. Kreke 3-4, RBI, .750 AVG
  • Z. Spruill 2.2 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 7.56 ERA
  • T. Harris 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 4.35 ERA
  • Myke Jones had another nice game, but he continues to be plagued by errors, making two of the throwing variety in this game. Jordan Kreke had a great debut for the Pelicans, collecting 3 hits and driving in a run. Zeke Spruill is still recovering after missing time with broken hand, thus the short outing. Ty'Relle Harris was great in relief, striking out the side while throwing a scoreless 8th inning.

    Rome 3, Hagerstown 5

  • P. Gosselin 1-3, RBI, .302 AVG
  • RSF 1-4, 2B, E (4), .309 AVG
  • C. Bethancourt 2-4, RBI, .252 AVG
  • E. Salcedo 0-1, RBI, BB, E (4), .216 AVG
  • C. Rasmus 5.1 IP, 5 R, 1 ER, 9 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 3.16 ERA
  • A. Wilson 2.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 2.84 ERA
  • The R-Braves didn't string together many hits and their defense let the pitchers down, as 4 of the runs that Cory Rasmus allowed were unearned. Of course, he gave up a ton of hits on his own and that didn't help matters. 22 year old Andrew Wilson, a 36th round pick in last year's draft, has been great in relief this year. An interesting side note: Hagerstown's hitting coach is Tony Tarasco, who hit .263 with a .700 OPS in 167 at bats for the Braves between 93 and 94.

    Danville 3, Elizabethton 2

  • R. Delgado 2-4, 2B, .351 AVG
  • J. Terdoslavich 3-4, 2B, RBI, E (6), .268 AVG
  • J. Whitmer 1-2, RBI, BB, .326 AVG
  • C. Perez 6.1 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 K, W (2), 0.36 ERA
  • Carlos Perez is putting himself in position to be the second straight Danville Brave to win the Appy Leauge Pitcher of the Year award. The 18 year old lefty has only allowed 1 earned run this season, and that came in his first start. This year's 6th round pick, 21 year old Joey Terdoslavich, extended his hitting streak 5 games, but also made his 6th error of the year at the hot corner, racking up that total in just 21 games.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Tigers 0

  • M. Lipka 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, SB (5), .329 AVG
  • D. Rohm 2-4, RBI, .310 AVG
  • R. de los Santos 2-3, 2B, HR (2), RBI, .368 AVG
  • D. Jurik 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K, W (2), 0.95 ERA
  • Matt Lipka is having an outstanding first season. He extended his hitting streak to 7 games, clubbing out a double and a triple, while driving in 2 runs and stealing a base. David Rohm is having a fine season as well, though you'd expect a 20 year old with JuCo experience to do well in the GCL. 20 year old catcher Ramon de los Santos hardly plays, with just 19 at bats in 8 games, but they really should get him in there more, since 4 of his 7 hits have gone for extra bases; he's hitting .368 with a 1.189 OPS. This year's 25th round pick, 23 year old Dan Jurik, has dominated in his 19 inning for the Orlando Braves, with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP, but as a 4 year college player he's way too expereienced for the league. Still, he can't help where the Braves placed him and he's doing everything in his power to get promoted.

DSL Braves 4, DSL Angles 5

  • F. Marte 3-4, HR (5), RBI, .256 AVG
  • C. Franco 2-4, .231 AVG
  • H. Garcia 2-4, E (1), .279 AVG
  • E. Medina 4 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 2.57 ERA
  • 19 year old outfielder Felix Marte hit his team leading 5th home run and he's gone 5 for his last 8 with a double, a homer and 3 RBI. 19 year old third baseman Carlos Franco has been hot lately, hitting .308 with a .840 OPS and 10 RBI in his last 10 games. 18 year old outfielder Hector Garcia has been hot as well, going 6-13 in his last 3 games.

    Hey CB,
    2 questions for ya.
1 – Where did Carlos Perez come from again?
2 – Do you expect Myke to cut down on teh errors after a few more seasons in the minors? I know it’s silly but it’s got me a bit worried.

    1. The Braves signed him out of the Dominican Republic as an international free agent before last season. He’s moved quick because he made his pro debut last season in the GCL as a 17 year old.
    2. I think they will. Most of his errors are throwing errors and that’s usually something that goes away as a player gets older and wiser. Young guys tend to make a lot of throws that they shouldn’t and when they get older they learn to just put it in their pocket. I also think that his arm isn’t quite good enough for SS, it’s acceptable but I think long term he’s going to end up as a second baseman, which should help things a lot.

His bat would be plus plus for second, no?
    I don't think so, personally.

He strikes out too much and doesn’t walk enough. High K rates and low BB rates aren’t condusive to future productivity. It’s possible for guys to improve in those areas, but given that Mycal’s already been on the older side for every league he’s played in, I don’t know how much we can expect him to advance as a hitter.

The power, though, is more than I thought it would be, so maybe he can compensate with that a little bit. Ultimately, I think he’s going to end up as a utility player, maybe with the upside of Omar Infante. Omar’s a better defender, and in terms of ages, was much, much more accomplished at 23 than Mycal is, but similar basic skill sets; the ability to hit for average without great plate discipline, with solid speed and limited power.

I would think so. Bronn listed his negatives, and I’ve never thought by any means that he’s a surefire Major Leaguer, but the kid’s work ethic and baseball IQ are off the charts, so I really believe in his ability to grow and make adjustments.

Carlos Perez is a 6’2’’ 195 lefty birthed 11/20/91 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
    His current Appalachian League stats include a 2-0 W/L record with a 0.36 ERA, 5 G, 5 GS, 25.0 IP, 15 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 11 BB, 23 K, .174 AVG.

I know it’s a small sample, but I love how Sucre is mashing in AA.

The departure of JoJo inspired the IL to a one run victory. It’s funny that yesterday’s ML ASG was dominated by great pitchers, and the same may have happened tonight in the AAA contest.

Bring Lipka up to replace Hicks!
lol yea! from GCL to the Show!
    What's Jordan Kreke's ceiling/career potential?

I hate to say it, but maybe AA. He’s been old for the leagues he’s played in and he hasn’t really been that great. He’s a good defender at third and definitely has a Major League body, but I just don’t think he has the hitting ability to make the climb. But, he’s a great clubhouse guy and a smart player, so he’s definitely a guy worth giving plenty of chances to.

    Anyone else

kinda worried about Salcedo’s Errors? I thought he was supposed to be an elite defender

    Youth and Inexperience

He’ll be fine once he gets a couple seasons under his belt.

Lots of great shortstops made a ton of errors at 18.

he has the tools to be an elite defender. Escobar made 25 errors in 2006 as a 23 year old in across three levels. Defense is usually the last skill to come with middle infielders.

    Kreke's promotion is a bit of a head-scratcher

When I was it, I was sure it signaled that Joe Leonard or Joey Terdoslavich, or even Jakob Dalfonso had been promoted to Rome, but no, it was Matt Weaver getting the start at third for Rome tonight. I just feel like we should have a more legitimate prospect getting playing time at third for Rome, since we drafted so many.

    Leonard

Leonard did get promoted yesterday. Guess he just didn’t get to Rome in time to play.

    Another question

Is Lipka perhaps too advanced for the GCL?

I feel he wont end the year there...what about you?

I think he’s right where he needs to be. Nothing wrong with letting the kid dominate at 18, then let him earn the job in Rome for 2011.

    Heyward

They may take the same approach with Lipka as they did Heyward and move him up to Danville with a couple week left in the season to get a taste in High Rookie ball. I’m really impresed with Lipka so far though offensively and especially defensively wtg kid keep it up!

Each time I read these recaps

I become more convinced we have reason to be optimistic concerning the future of the Brave’s organization.
Props to CB for keeping us informed!

And yodaime14, who does as much, and sometimes more, than I do.

    Yes, I agree

    Thanks yodaime14.

    Yeah, he does more...

but that’s just cause you’re so damned lazy.

I literally just woke up from a nap.

I just saved a pod of whales from extinction at the hands of Japanese whalers after I repaired a damaged satellite that was going to crash on top of a children’s hospital

    Our New Shortstop

any idea of what number gonzo will wear? Will he bat around where Yunel did?

    we’ll see tonight, I suppose

    Some of my favorites.

I think Harris is one of the best bullpen arms we have down in the minors, just oft-injured. He’ll advance quickly though with his age and college exp.

I love Spruill and Rasmus as well. Bethancourt is finally getting his bat alive and Mycal goes deep. Those are the types of nights you really want to see from Lipka at that level.

I like to see nights with 7 perfect games and 3 grand slams for every hitter.
