In the first 4 innings off of Mets starter Mike Pelfrey, the Braves had 7 hits and 3 walks... but no runs. Lots of stranded runners and double plays contributed, as did the fact that all those hits were singles. But the Braves did run Pelfrey's pitch count up quite a bit, and their hard work paid off in the 5th.
The Braves started the 5th with 5 straight singles, from Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, Troy Glaus, Eric Hinske, and Omar Infante. That ended Pelfrey's night. Elmer Dessens came in and got a double-play from Yunel Escobar, but that made the score 3-0. Tim Hudson then came up and got the Braves' first extra-base hit, a looping double down the right-field line that scored the Braves 4th run. Pelfrey ended with a line of 4 IP, 12 H (all singles), 4 R, 3 BB, 2 K, and a -0.165 WPA.
Tim Hudson, in addition to his hitting, was his usual self on the mound. He gave up only 6 baserunners in 7 innings, and when he did have baserunners, he often got a double play to end the threat (2 ground-ball DPs and one line-drive DP). Huddy got his usual 60% ground balls (12/20), and really could have gone another inning if needed. He threw only 92 pitches in 7 innings, or 1 fewer than Pelfrey threw in 4-plus innings. And of course, he didn't give up any runs. Hudson's final line was 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, and a 0.315 WPA.
Jonny Venters and Billy Wagner worked perfect innings in the 8th and 9th to close out the game with ease.
Six different Braves had mutli-hit games, led by Omar Infante's 3 hits. Omar now has 7 hits in the series, and there's still one more game to go. That'll do. Martin Prado went hitless for the second straight game, though he did have 2 walks.
The Braves have now clinched the series win and will have at least a 4-game lead going into the All-Star Break. That's pretty sweet. Even better, they have a chance to win tomorrow and take as much as a 6-game lead into the break (depending on the Phillies' results tonight and tomorrow). It's been a hugely successful first half so far, and winning tomorrow would just be the icing on the cake.

MVP
Tim Hudson-- 7 shutout innings, plus 2 hits, an RBI, and a 0.107 WPA as a hitter
Honorable Mention
Omar Infante-- 3/4, RBI, 0.137 WPA
LVP
Mike Pelfrey
MVP in a Losing Effort
Angel Pagan (for the 2nd straight night)-- 3/4, 2B, 2 SB, and a 0.137 WPA
Clutch Play
Brian McCann's RBI single in the 5th (0.122 WPA)
Unclutch Play
Martin Prado grounding into a 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the 4th (-0.184 WPA)... but we forgive you, Martin!

Solid Victory
Now let’s hope Lowe can match Santana can be good enough for us to win. Oh by the way, the Bullpen is the real reason why we are winning all these games. So often in previous years, I would get nervous/cringe when Bobby goes to the pen. Now, going to the pen feels like closing the door on the game.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
PERFECT GAME ALERT
cincy pitcher tim wood (who?) has a perfecto through five
atl192485 - July 10, 2010
I read as far as the name
He has no chance.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
meh, stranger things have happened

See Galarrage, Armando.

bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Travis Wood
yeah, I don’t know him either…
coldriver10 - July 10, 2010
It's against the Phillies
so I hope he gets it.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
It will be meaningless if the Reds can’t score for him.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
Still perfect through 7
Of course, a run would help the cause.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Only 4 baserunners total in that game.
Wow.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Yeah...
Roy’s pitchin a gem too.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
man on 2nd
0 outs for cincy, lets go!

We need a runs thread for Cincy
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
eh.
not worth the effort, sorry.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
LOL
This is true…
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010

FUCK! Doc is too good
bflobraves - July 10, 2010

DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
...and by the way
I love MLB Network. Beats watching ESPN for anything.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Perfect through 8
Anyone got a rally monkey for Cincy for 1/2 an inning?
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
How about your profile pic?
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Haha
The WTF pic? Couldn’t stop laughing the first time I saw it, so it had to go up there.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Votto
all we nned
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Phillips, #2 hitter, Votto
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Sounds good to me.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Cabrera #2
and I like he has 2 hits vs. Roy tonight.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Man,
he’s been terrible this year. .285 OBP? UGGH.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
take a seat
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
what if it goes into 10?
and he still has perfecto…would he go another…depends on pitch count, anyone got it?
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Gimmie 2 secs
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
92 pitches
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
idk
if he can go 10
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
He could go 10, easy
assuming the 9th is perfect.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
well then
votta making sure we dont have to go 10
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
What if...
BOTH guys go 10 innings? When was the last time that happened?
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
That'd be sick
I don’t think it’s ever happened in the modern era. I’m sure back in the day, pitchers went 14 innings and threw 200 pitches.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
but one having a perfecto
could this be the first time with a perfecto
And not jinxing… would it be the 1st 10 inning perfecto if it happens?
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
I don’t think he is going to make it pass the 9th.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
i've never heard of such a thing
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
OK, wow...
In 1995, two guys both went 10 innings… in DIFFERENT games. Bobby Jones and Todd Stottlemyre on June 16th. Still looking for the same game.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
wow
thats even more impressive IMO
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
OK
There are actually 2 more cases of that in the 90’s.
The last time 2 guys went 10+ in the same game: Dave Stewart and Erik Hanson, Oakland vs. Seattle, August 1, 1990. Neither gave up a run and Stew went 11 for the win.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
ELEVEN???
Wow.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
And...
Halladay is out
kbertling353 - July 10, 2010
the only people i can imagine going so long into a game are knuckleballers, but those guys arent as far as i know
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Impressive
Definitely different times now. The emphasis on pitch counts these days will prevent anything like that from happening again. I think Steve Avery was our case of a young guy getting abused and Bobby’s been reluctant to push his young guys too far early in their careers ever since.
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
1959 Harvey Haddix took a perfecto to the 13th and lost…Lew Burdette had a shutout as well, I’m not sure how long he pitched but it was at least 9
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
92 for wood through 8
atl192485 - July 10, 2010
Roy is absolutely dealing right now
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
what if
we had 2 starters in the 10th? how awesome
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
incredible
is it perfecto or no-no?
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
perfecto
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
oh man
this maybe the best game of the season IMO…if both starters go 10
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Oh wait...
Roy’s up 3rd in the inning. They’ll pinch hit for him.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
damn it
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Damn
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
and...
now they gotta great chance to win
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
If they win 3 straight walk-offs I might just puke
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
sorry we couldn't help you out
But you should check out the fun baseball conversation we are having with AndyinGA.

I think there was a guy with that name here once
Some kid that got banned, maybe. I’m not sure.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
If I'm right
He’s like 16 years old and completely lacks social skills.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
Justincredible is still here..
i kid because i love
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
I’m reading the convo now….I’ve never seen him in here before
bpk228480 - July 10, 2010
yeah, i thought he was from this blog
just because it is so weird for a Braves fan to only be a member of Redreporter.
Anyway, I do wish you guys luck, after getting over the way we embarrassed ourselves against you.
Because of TBS I watched more Braves games when I was little then Reds games, despite living only 20 miles from GABP. I was very sad when Skip died, and I would like to see Bobby do well in his final year.
justin007000 - July 11, 2010
+1
Go get a win tomorrow.
Bronn - July 11, 2010
Just got a hit
Fuck the Phillies. Fuck them all to hell.
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
This.
A million times over.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
nevermind
fuck, great while it lasted
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
You might see it
I would be shocked if Roy doesn’t come out for the 10th inning.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
I’ve never seen anything like this (still tech. haven’t). I heard Pedro got the same treatment while in the Expos.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
Yeah
I wouldn’t want to allow a perfect game against me either, especially the irony that would be attached to it.
kp.atl - July 10, 2010
Dusty IS his manager...
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
ya he might throw a complete game and pitch tomorrow
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Get it, O
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2010
This team sucks and has no power we need a RH bat Rabble Rabble Rabble
Bronn - July 10, 2010
Agreed
We do need on more thumper from the Right side if we truly want to go to the big dance this year. Good post Bronn I completely agree, I just don’t want a rental player.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - July 10, 2010

EricGreggWasPaidOff - July 10, 2010
ability to recognize sarcasm fail
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
I refuse to embrace sarcasm font.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
you shouldnt have to…most people recognize by the name the quality of the poster…and then when its nonsense its usually sarcasm…also, the added “RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE” is kinda like a big flashy light
no one who rabbles actually says rabble
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Is it sad that I actually said “rabble rabble rabble” at Ron Darling on my TV Friday night when he was bashing Yunel?
UMDBHIK - July 10, 2010
…kinda, yeah.
!Vive la Francoeur! - July 11, 2010
rabble rabble rabble rabble
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
We won't be able to face the Mutts in the World Series.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Hey someone tell the Mets , LOL.
Someone needs to tell the Mets that they are not playing the O’s or the Indians anymore what a bunch of fakers and pretenders. Ho hum another series win for the Bravos. Huddy is back, pitching is solid and the bullpen has been the strongest part of this ballclub. Last time I can remember the bullpen being close to this good was when we had D. Holmes and C. Hammond (both of whom were considered past their primes).
Simply put this team keeps winning and getting no attention from the mainstream media which is fine by me (love being the underdog entrenched under the radar screen).
Noticed Y. Escobar is now batting way towards bottom of the order I believe it was 8th in the order today and he had to singles. Still cannot believe the guy has no homers at this stage of the season. Hopefully he can find his stroke in the second half and trading him would be foolish. I would still like to add one more OF however at the deadline but not a damn rental player at least a guy we can keep around for a couple of years and nobody named Corey Hart plz. DEAR GOD !
Go Braves man it is great to see us back on top where we truly belong.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - July 10, 2010
LMAO!!
I feel the urge to hop over to the Mets blog right now. They’re probably screamin right now. Fire Manuel, Minaya, trade everybody..et al.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
The first two are actually good ideas, though.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
They have been for quite some time, Pac
Up here in Syracuse, a bunch of my buddies are Mets fans. They’ve been screaming for it for quite a while.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
As they should
That has to be the most incompetent Manager/GM combo in baseball, right?
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Without question
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Minaya is terrible
all he does is go after Latin players and over pays them and look what that has gotten him…
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
A payroll full of d-bags
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Oliver Perez
3 yrs 36 million…hahahahahaha thats a top 5 worst deal in MLB, along with Mr. Lowe though
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Don't forget Luis Castillo's deal
That’s gotta be up there too.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
idk if it is top 5
i’d but Lowe/Perez/ and Vernon Wells o it for sure, but would have to do more research now
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Lowe isn't even in the top 25 worst deals, for me.
Sure, he’s the worst on the Braves, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually that bad.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
4 yrs 60 million, for our worst pitcher… and highest paid player
i think its a terrible deal
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
He may be our worst starter,
but that does not mean he is bad. Actually look at his numbers and you’ll see he’s above-average. We just have a lot of above-average starters.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
wow
he is doing a lot better than i though
i’ll take a 4.40 ERA, but not for 15 million
I will say he has been very solid his recent starts though
As long as he can keep the sinker down he is fine, but when it is elevated it is crushed
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
My biggest gripe with Lowe is that he is going up against other teams Aces. He is not good enough for those battles. Going up against a 3 or 4 maybe.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
In the playoffs,
you can bet he’ll be the 3rd or 4th starter, so no worries.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Betcha he'll be in the pen, my friend
Huddy
Hanson
JJ
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
If we need a 4th starter,
he’d be it for sure,though.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
idk
i think we could use a spot start from Lowe…if we make the playooffs(knock on wood)
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
We're going to get a lot farther ahan a five-game series.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
IF we make them
no jumping to conclusions
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
At 85%, I'll jump without looking.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
I feel Bobby is going to slot him in for 2. I think the Playoff rotation should be Hudson/Hanson/JJ/Meds. That’s just me.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
Meds needs to be in the bullpen come playoff time
His arm will already be verging on overworked by October, no reason to burn him out completely when we have lots of good options.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
I got a perfect guy for the 4 spot…………….John Smoltz!
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
not medlen
also: stop we are 70 games away from playoofs, we cant be talking about the rotations
But IMO Medlen wouldnt be a starter, but a long reliever
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Yep...+1
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Just pretend like
all these comments are prefaced by “if”
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
ok
i like it
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
you are such a baseball superstitious.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
we are in July
no need to talk playoofs, also im very superstitious
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Nobody's talking
“playoofs” :)
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Ah...the Jim Mora reference
Never gets old.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
tehe
spelling error
and deciding what the rotation in the “playoofs” isnt talking playoffs?
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Not a long reliever.
He’d be a high-leverage guy. Bobby’s already shown he trusts him in that role.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
I think he'll do it based on who's pitching well at the time.
I know he values the veteran presence and all (and Lowe has been a good playoff pitcher), but I think he’ll keep him out of a key matchup if he doesn’t pitch really well down the stretch.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
yup
tommorow is gonna be a tough game
Lowe vs. Johan, it’ll be tough
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
After the first few weeks of the season, aces don’t really match up directly. In fact, kawakami seemed to get a lot of the ace matchups when he was in the rotation.
telemakhos - July 10, 2010
Really?
You realize that the rotation doesn’t matter except for about the first week of the season.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
dont forgot about Soriano, Aramis Ramirez (only bad if he never rights the ship from last year’s shoulder injury), and Fukodome….speaking of worst GM/Manager combo…Lou isnt that bad but Jim Hendry is so bad he might make up the difference (Bobby cox and Jim Hendry might be the worst GM/Manager combo….and I think Bobby is a really good manager)
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Lowe's deal
is not 1/10th as bad as Perez. At least Lowe is pitching, and pitching decently. Perez is worth less than nothing.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Million dollar arm...
10 cent head
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
I used that phrase today!
Just thought I’d note that. You may proceed.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Crap
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Ya
but we got 2 more years left on that deal…hopefully he can deliever like he has been recently and not like the begginning of the season
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Or trade him to NYY
for Vasquez. How great would that be??
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
So?
He’ll still be worth probably 2/3 as much money as he ends up making in the deal. Perez is worth negative money.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Where is Perez now?
Is he down in AA? I thought I remember him b*tching about not wanting to get sent down, last I looked.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
He's "rehabbing"
from his “injury”. I think they have to bring him up sometime around the end of the month or send him down for real.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
"injury"
ya he cant hit the strike zone
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Or bite the bullet and DFA...
then the Royals can pick him up off the scrapheap.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Wait a minute!
Perez was never on the Braves.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
oh ya perez is a joke
he isnt pitching and cant hit the strike zone, that was a pathetic signing…but lowe isnt nearly worth 15 million a year, he has a 5+ ERA
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
ERA FTW!
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Crazy talk.
Lowe will give you 200 innings of adequate pitching every year. That’s worth $12 mil a year, or very close to it.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
$12M on the dot for 2009, projected for around $11M for this year…
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Steve Phillips/Bobby Valentine
Makes Minaya/Manuel look nearly competent.
UMDBHIK - July 10, 2010
Phillips is bad but he did get them Wright and Reyes
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Reyes looks like that oblique is really bothering him
Had to bat righty last night and tonight.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
That's been the case for a little bit now.
That play before he got pulled, I think, is even more telling.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Phillips
He also traded Scott Kazmir for absolutely nothing. If you’ve read Moneyball it’s funny because anytime Billy Beane wanted to take advantage of somebody he’d call Phillips first.
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
Victor Zambrano
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
lol
makes me laugh just thinking about it
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
such a bad trade
maybe he saw Zambrano and skipped everything else
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
he thought his 1st name was Carlos...
not Victor
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
exactly
we might have steve phillips here
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
I never sexually harrassed that woman at ESPN
Oh sh*t, I blew my cover.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
im so glad
not that i wish him any harm as a person, i just hated him as a broadcaster
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
yeah he was brutal
but then again, it IS ESPN we’re talking about.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
People i like on ESPN
Peter Gammons, Timmy K, Dave Winefield, and Joe Morgan
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
which one of these is not like the other?
bpk228480 - July 10, 2010
Gammons is not on ESPN anymore.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
health problems right?
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
No.
He’s on MBLN.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
-1
Because Gammons isn’t on there anymore. He went to MLB Network
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
Then again
That’s probably not fair. Schuerholz traded Adam Wainwright for a rental year of JD Drew. At least he got us to the playoffs though. I guess every GM makes bad deals, but Philips just seemed adept at it.
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
Phillips
just did whatever his crazy whim was on a given day. Occasionally, it worked. Often, it was hilariously bad. But he was always entertaining.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
and Tex...
nevrmind i’ll stop there
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Hence my "ever GM makes bad deals"
I’ll take John Schuerholz’s bad deals that resulted in 15 straight division titles, 5 pennants, and 1 World Series over any of Phillips bad deals every day. I’m just sayin’.
AuditDawg - July 10, 2010
Was that not Wren?
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
That was an extraordinarily fair trade.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
as quick as possible, can you explain why you are against the Teix trade but in favor of the Drew trade…the Tex trade had it worked out would have given us over a year and a half of one of the best 1B in baseball…
I feel like the Tex trade is looked at poorly bc Andrus and Feliz turnd out so well (and the odds of that happening werent good, u usually dont trade for two guys who are in low A and have them both turn into starters) and bc we got nothing when we traded Tex (which is completely irrelveant when discussing the actual trade itself
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Because Teixiera did absolutely nothing to help us get to the playoffs or win games.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
He did everything he could to help us…the Sp just decided to all get hurt.
justincredubil02 - July 13, 2010
And tried
to both of them.
Brian. - July 11, 2010
Wow!
This season is exceeding my wildest dreams. This is how Bobby deserves to leave the game. Braves are the best team in the East. They seem to have the perfect guy for every role. Well done Wren. Go Braves!!
Frozen Fan - July 10, 2010
watching the game i didnt realize…12 singles given up by pelfrey? that has to be some sort of record for a pitcher to give up 12 singles without any extra base hits.
awix - July 10, 2010
Didn’t the Braves have a game this year where they gave up 16 singles- think it was the Tigers.
Broccoman - July 10, 2010
Correct, it was 16 singles and 1 home run.
Creek Johnson - July 10, 2010
I was pumped
because I was facing him in my fantasy league. Braves win…Pelfrey loss. It’s been a good day.
DolphinNation - July 10, 2010
I’d almost forgot what it looked like to see a five or six game lead on the division and just club the Mets over and over.
kalesi - July 10, 2010
Yeah it’s been a while.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
Out of all 200 channels on my TV, Fox Sports had a glitch, It was annoying not to hear anything , but maybe it was a good thing….I never did like FS commentating.
Joseph_C - July 10, 2010
I didn’t think it was too bad. Kevin Millar did a pretty decent job.
coldriver10 - July 10, 2010
were we listening to the same broadcast?
that was in the top 5 of the worst broadcasts I’ve heard all year and I’ve listened to a few White Sox and Nats games.
DogDaysofSummer - July 10, 2010
Agreed
That was the worst broadcasting I have heard. I will say they did seem to favor the Braves which was great. But wtf Millar, everything about that guy was annoying. When he repeatedly said Chipper Jones I wanted to punch the tv! or at least mute it.
BTW I am Tessa, fan of the Braves for 16 years! And is Millar on MLB Network also? He looked familiar.
asset - July 10, 2010
yea he’s on MLBN too…just as incredibly annoying there
bpk228480 - July 10, 2010
Hell, I thought they were raving ridiculously about every player in the game.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Had to mute it...
After being told by one of the dudes that Alex Cora is the kind of player you need on a winning ball club. I would argue that such a statement is exactly the opposite of the truth.

Random comment.....
Buster Onley just tweeted that Fielder is available for a trade and not a one year rental. Prince is going to want more than 5yrs/125 million during Free Agencyr. Who in the hell is going to pay that?
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
American Competitive Eating Association
atl192485 - July 10, 2010
no…the cant even pay that japanese guy

great now another player everyone is gonna bring up
Unless we want to get rid of JT, Vizzy, Minor, Delgado, and Freeman stay away from Prince
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
I wouldn't mind having Prince
but I wouldn’t give up much of anything to get him.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
I’d rather have Glaus and then subsequently Freeman when he’s ready.
I wouldn’t give up my own belly button lint for Fielder.
UMDBHIK - July 10, 2010

DolphinNation - July 10, 2010

Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010

MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010

But he loves lamp.
atl192485 - July 10, 2010
except for the fact that he is a 280 hitter for his career, and averages 30 2Bs a season…he is a complete hitter, not just a TTO guy…

frozendesert - July 11, 2010
Wise words. A selfish, one dimensional dope who is two weeks from eating his way out of the league at any given time is not the sort of guy I want to see the Braves make a long term investment in.
Sam Jethroe - July 10, 2010
Well, assuming we got him,
we wouldn’t be making a long-term investment at all. He’s owed about $5M the rest of this year and then I believe he has one more year of arbitration. Which would prob. come out around $14-15M. That’s reasonable, and at the end of that we could let him walk and take the prospects.
I wouldn’t trade for him because we don’t really need a 1B, but it wouldn’t be a long-term thing and he’s an excellent hitter right now. He’s not one-dimensional, either. Or selfish. Where are you even getting that from?
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
I have a major problem with guys who stand around and just try to hit the ball into orbit. That goes for him and Dunn, as well.
“Self aggrandizing” is probably a better term than “selfish” That whole bowling pins thing last year in a completely meaningless game rubbed me the wrong way. Really, really, REALLY the wrong way.
Sam Jethroe - July 10, 2010
Indeed. You have a problem with orchestrated team celebrations? I guess you didn’t like the “empty dugout” celebration either.
Where you see showboating, I see team cohesion.
Bronn - July 11, 2010
I just gave you a plus one
Don’t go ruining our good vibe.
I got into some major discussions of this last year. That thing seemed more like it was designed to rub the Giants face in a tough loss and celebrate the Wonder of Prince rather than celebrate their own win. That took place on the field, in full view of the Giants as they walked off. Our empty dugout thing took place in the Braves dugout and locker room. Very different things.
Sam Jethroe - July 11, 2010
They said at the time
that they were going to do it for whoever hit the next walkoff HR. It happened to be Prince. Wasn’t about him at all. Also, they apologized later and said they wouldn’t do it again.
Your characterization of him as a player is all wrong, too. He’s a complete hitter, not just a HR guy. Though he hits lots of those, and that is a good thing.
Jacob Peterson - July 11, 2010
I really don’t think he’s a 14-15 mil per year kind of guy though. Don’t get me wrong, his power is outrageous, but he’s limited to 1B and eventually DH, and frankly we have bigger needs elsewhere.
Prince Fielder is the LAST player people should be looking into.
UMDBHIK - July 11, 2010
Hey,
I’m not saying we should trade for him. Just saying he’s not a bad player, or on a bad contract.
Jacob Peterson - July 11, 2010

bflobraves - July 10, 2010

Fox
Kevin Millar and that other guy were quite possibly the 2 shititest announcers ever..and not hearing the ball hit the bat and ball pop the catcher glove was very irratating for some reason
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
I thought Ran Gant talked too much during the broadcast the other night. Kevin Millar talks too much as well and is a blowhard, to boot.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
Ugh, Millar
They listed who he thought should be pitching in the ASG for the NL and it included Jimenez, Halladay, Wainwright, and….Pelfrey. Seriously? Pelfrey? Over Josh Johnson? Over Tim Hudson? Over the several pitchers doing better?

Or did you mean Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman and Horace Grant?
James Worthy and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Byron Scott, maybe?
Get off that “James wasn’t good enough to win” bullshit. His teams were always garbage.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
mo williams, varejoa, JAMESON!!!!, Shaq…they did everything they could and had a great team
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
Spoiler Alert!
those are not good players
DogDaysofSummer - July 10, 2010
Jamison is a good player, Mo Williams was an allstar (although he did not really deserve it)
bpk228480 - July 10, 2010
Williams is a fifth option on a championship team.
Varejao is a solid rebounder and defender…and nothing else.
JamIson hasn’t been good for years.
Shaq is 300 years old.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Varejao is probably actually the best of those guys. Kind of the Dennis Rodman of that group-high energy, athletic, aggressive on the boards.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
I don't mind him.
Really wish the Cavs hadn’t matched the offer sheet for him from my Bobbies (although they really just did it as a favor to his agent because the Cavs wouldn’t commit.)
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
he is supposed to lead a team to a championship like legends: Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kobe. He does not have the heart of a champion and never will, he is an egoistical loser
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
oh and by the way:
Lebron betrayed the whole city, he is a traitor to them, always with the comments of: “I will always be a Cavalier”, “Cleveland is my home, I will never leave”. bullshit like that is why lebron is the most hated player in the NBA right now, too much ego, not a winner
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
Cleveland traded him…
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
Lebron picked the decision
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
And Cleveland agreed to a sign-and-trade, which technically means that they traded him.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
they needed to.
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
okay..you are just nitpicking… Yes Cleveland traded LeBron. But, LeBron was a free agent and could just sign with the Heat outright, if he wanted to. The Heat wanted to do a sign and trade so that they could get some money from Cleveland to help pay, and wanted to add the sixth year to the contract, which only Cleveland could offer, due to some NBA free agent rules. The heat did the same thing with Bosh and Toronto.
dkinser86 - July 11, 2010
Uhh, no, that's not how it works.
Cleveland did not pay ANY of James’ contract.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Lebron turned one of the worst teams in the league into one of the best – all by himself.
Kobe couldn’t do anything without any help.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
Lebron had a great team compared to what Kobe had:
Chris Mihm? Smush Parker? Kwame Brown? Devean George? Brian Cook? half of them aren’t in the NBA right now
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
hahaha…how conveniently you leave off Derek Fisher, Wil Bynum, Paol Gasol and lamar Odom.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
I'm talking about Lebron's "terrible" team in 2007 and Kobe's 2006.
Lebron’s 2009-2010 team was great. man for man they could beat the Lakers, but because Lebron wasn’t a good leader and not a winner, didn’t have a heart of a champion like Kobe did, didn’t went far. Lebron did quit ( kinda ) on the team against the Celtics, he was making turnover after turnover.
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
just…wow.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
how can you possibly call Lebron a winner?
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
Well, for one, he turned one of the perenial worst teams in the NBA into a legit playoff contender – without any other major pieces.
Would you consider Dan Marino a winner?
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
the Cavs with him are a first place team.
But without him they are still a playoff team, they are not bad without him
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
Yes. Yes they are. They are pretty bad without him.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
no they are not, they are still a 6th spot in the Eastern Conference.
Mo Williams will play better, Jamison will return to his 20/10 ways, JJ Hickson is improving, Moon will help in the defense, and they will acquire some role players.
Kobe:The Legend - July 11, 2010
Do you have any IDEA how far the 6 seed in the East is from the #1 seed in the entire league?
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Being a playoff team in the East and being a good team are two different things.
dkinser86 - July 11, 2010
Also, it’s bouncyball. Which, last time I checked, was far inferior to the game of baseball.
The NBA has been nothing but a slam-dunk contest for years anyway.
UMDBHIK - July 11, 2010
Good call.
That’s why this year’s NBA champions dunked exactly 5% of the time, right?
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Wanna bet?
They’ll be fighting the Bucks, Bobcats, and Pistons for the 6-8 seeds next year.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
LeBron didn’t have Phil Jackson as a coach either.
There is no way that you can say, “man for man” the Cavs were better than the Lakers..
Taking out Lebron and Kobe..
Fisher vs Mo Williams: This might be the only thing that maybe close. Fisher may not be able to take over a game like Mo, but he is more consistent and more of a track record of hitting key shots.
Artest for Parker: Artest has long been known has one of the best one on one defenders in the league. He doesn’t hit many shots, but neither does parker. Parker sucks, end of story.
Gasol vs Jamison: Gasol is one of the best post player in the NBA, offensively and defensively. Jamison can knock down some shots, but can’t really create like he once could. And he never really has played defense.
Bynum vs Varejao This really isn’t close. Sure Varejao is a good defender, but Bynum is just as good, a better shot blocker and can actually score in the post.
Odom vs Shaq: As the sixth man, there is not really a contest here. Shaq is well past his prime. Odom is one of the most versatile players in the NBA.
dkinser86 - July 11, 2010
Definitely right.
Shaq and ilgauskas could totes run circles around Gasol and Odom, huh? I mean, man-for-man.
By the way, Kobe quit on his team in the Finals, too. His teammates were just good enough to pick him up in his shitty game seven, unike Lebron’s.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Funny, there is nowhere on the internet where you can find EITHER of those comments attributed to James.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Those "legends" never did it with as shitty a team as LeBron had.
The team he took to the Finals wasn’t even close to any of their championship teams.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
Maybe they should have, you know, built a TEAM?
Green Bay didn’t shut down when Brett Favre moved on. Neither did Denver when Elway rode off into the sunset.

Because the team turned its back on him after he made a series of coments that were ENTIRELY true.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
I really don’t think his xenophobic and homophobic viewpoints are something that should be defended or even agreed with. He hates that New York City is a melting pot. Well, tough nuggets, Rocker-everyone we consider American today traces their roots back to somewhere else, and a significant percentage of those came through New York City.

The M’s aren’t going anywhere this year and Lee will leave Texas after the season. I fail to see where the harm is from a Mariners perspective.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
But that is supposed to be your “Rival”, why help them gain anything? They could win the World Series with that move. Sure M’s probably came out ahead but that just feels wrong to me.
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
The Mariners and Rangers are not rivals
and even if they were, who cares? You do what’s best for your team and don’t worry about the others.

and they get a power hitting switch hitter 1st baseman
Maybe when Smoak becomes really good we can trade all our good prospect for him!

Not really the year of the pitcher
League-wide scoring is down like .15 runs. Instead of 4.62 runs per game, it’s 4.47. In 1992, league-wide scoring was 4.12 runs per game.
The real year of the pitcher was 1968, when run scoring was down to a paltry 3.4 runs per game. 7 different starters had ERAs under 2 that year.

Random Question about the Reds
Where the hell is Adrolis (sp?) Chapman?
romone_braves91 - July 10, 2010
AAA
i think he recently hit 103, but idk if it relieble because my friend told me
bflobraves - July 10, 2010
That was on a fast gun.
He can hit 100 for real though.
As for where he is, he’s in AAA and they’ve switched him to relief for now. He’s walking a TON of guys.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
He recently started transitioning to the bullpen in AAA.
He’ll probably be up as a reliever pretty soon after the break.
MichaelProcton - July 10, 2010
Another really questionable decision with a starting prospect
The kid has really raw secondary stuff but a live fastball. He needs to develop his secondary pitchers, but he’s being converted to where he’ll rely more on his fastball so the Reds can boost their playoff run. Given some development, he’d have the chance to become a really good starter.
I might understand if the Reds had real problems in the bullpen and needed someone to step in and take over the 8th or 9th inning, but they haven’t been that bad. Cordero hasn’t been great, but he’s firmly entrenched as their closer unless he completely blows up. They’ve also got Arthur Rhodes back there, and a few other decent arms. I think this is a bad move for the Reds, who might be able to ride their young talent for several years if they can improve their pitching a bit. Chapman’s potential value as a starter could really become important in 2-3 years for them, so slowing his development to make one playoff run is a bit questionable.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
if this is their plan then its ok…
old school way of breaking in a pitcher…using him as a reliever for half a season than he starts all next year (like what the Rays did with Price)
Swo12bv - July 10, 2010
Yes, but the old-school method was to take guys who were almost ready to become big league plaeyrs and let them get their first taste of MLB out of the bullpen. What they’re doing here is taking a guy who has a plus fastball and little else because he’s raw and undeveloped, and forcing him to rely more on his fastball to get hitters out. It slows down his development, and for this team….I can’t agree with it. The Reds are pretty young with a solid core, and can be competitive for several years with improved starting pitching. Slowing the development of your top starting prospect is a questionable move.
Bronn - July 10, 2010
He's got tons of crap to work on now.
He needs to be in the minors. If they bring him up this year, they’re asking for trouble.
Jacob Peterson - July 10, 2010
Braves with Medlen?
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
We had a similar discussion at RR
I was initially against moving Chapman, but I have moved.
Our bullpen has struggled this year, outside of Rhodes there really isn’t a dependable arm down there, Masset, and Orunsderk have shown signs lately, Bray had TJS last year and is just back from it, Owings is a long man with limited stuff and control issues (an awful combination), Smith is fresh up from AA, and Coco has a WHIP of 1.55. A 100 MPH fastball might help.
Plus how to develop a kid is a crap shot. There can be an argument made that it is better for him to stay in AAA and work on his secondary pitches and pitch efficiency every 5th day. Yet another argument can be made that his pure stuff is just too good for AAA, and the only way he will learn how to pitch is against big leaguers who won’t all be over matched by a 100 MPH fastball.
Plus he will only lose two months of minor league development. The Reds need bullpen help and a lefty who throws 100 MPH can go a long way.
justin007000 - July 11, 2010
There's definitely two sides to it
But in most cases, I’m going to fall on the side of leaving prospects down. Even if, as you say, his fastball is too dominating for AAA hitters, you can always give him instructions to avoid throwing it, even if he gets in trouble. The ultimate goal for any minor league team is not to win games, but to develop talent, so if he gets knocked out while avoiding his fastball, it’s not a big deal. While on the big league club, though, it’s not about developing, but only results, and a typical relief pitcher will throw fastballs 80% of the time, and won’t use more than two pitches.
If he wants to succeed as a starter, he’ll need more than just two pitches, but it’s tough for relief pitchers, who get limited opportunities to work, to keep a third pitch sharp. Relief pitchers don’t know when they’re going to be needed in games, so they don’t get the same kind of work between outings that starters do with actual intensive throwing sessions. They can’t put too much strain on their arms on any given day in case they’re needed to throw later that night. It’s not the same as actual in-game work.
I don’t think the Reds’ bullpen situation is that bad. They’re set in the 9th inning with a decent closer, and Arthur Rhodes has been dominant. Nick Masset is better than his results would indicate-he’s a strike out machine most nights, but he’s getting killed on things like BABIP and HR/FB% which are generally beyond a pitcher’s control. Herrerra is an average, unremarkable LOOGY. It doesn’t take much else to put together a solid bullpen.
The Reds are young enough and talented enough that they’ll have more opportunities to make the playoffs, and ultimately, a couple of months’ extra development for Chapman now could pay big dividends in 2012. It would be much better not to get his arbitration clock started until he’s ready to be a starter. It’s similar to what the Mets did with Mejia this year-he wasn’t that valuable in the bullpen, but they started his arbitration clock so he could get less than 30 innings of unexceptional bullpen work in the big leagues, when he has the potential to be a really solid starter in two seasons.
About the only time I agree with the decision is in the case of the Rays with David Price. They had all kinds of bullpen issues, and couldn’t keep anyone healthy once he’d been named the closer, and they had a legitimate playoff team that just needed someone at the back end to get three outs. They just didn’t have that, and Price was really close to being ready to break into the rotation anyway. They waited until really late in the year to call him up, and didn’t waste time converting him to a reliever at AAA, just had him continue starting all year until he reached the big leagues. He had a great playoff run with them, and was ready to be a member of the rotation the next season.
Bronn - July 11, 2010
That...
Is a long post.
SuperNewb - July 11, 2010
I have strong opinions.
Bronn - July 11, 2010
I see your point
But Cordero is lucky, not solid.
He has a WHIP of 1.55, his K/9 has fallen in each of the last 3 seasons, while his BB/9 has risen to 4.87/9.
Cordero is old and perhaps he is falling of the cliff, and I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if he blows up before the season is over.
I think the Reds could use another big time power arm in the ’pen.
justin007000 - July 11, 2010
we also had another young hard throwing pitchers whose pure stuff dominated the Minors
It took big league failure for Homer Bailey to really figure out that he needed more than a 12-6 curve ball and a 96 MPH fastball to last in the Big Leagues.
He finally put together a good string of starts over the course of the final 6 weeks last year, and he was putting it together in his final 3 or 4 starts before hitting the DL this year.
Also Chapman can go back to the AAA rotation next season if he needs to. He is on a big league contract so his option for 2010 was burned after he was demoted in March. So this won’t really change his option status.
justin007000 - July 11, 2010
But they also sent Mejia back down.
He would have been up at some point this year, regardless of his role.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
If Cincy weren’t in playoff contention, I’d agree with you. However, do you really want a flamethrower with control problems in your major league bullpen, or do you want him to work those issues out in Louisville while your big league club has been performing fine without him?

justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
Also, we recently beat them 2-1, and they needed Roy Halladay just to get that one win.
Plus, they’re also in 3rd place.
UMDBHIK - July 11, 2010
Not by much, now
Just 0.5 game back of the Mutts.
Jacob Peterson - July 11, 2010
They will probably be in second after we beat the Mets later today
dkinser86 - July 11, 2010
I just realized.
We now have the best record in the NL by 2 games. That’s pretty damn cool. If the NL somehow wins the ASG, we have a good shot at locking up home field throughout the playoffs. Which I hope is something that will come in handy.
Jacob Peterson - July 11, 2010
Since there’s a chance… chance… a possibility (knock on wood and throw salt over my shoulder) we make the playoffs this may be the first year in awhile I actually watch the all star game.
SuperNewb - July 11, 2010
Particularly given our ridiculous home record.
MichaelProcton - July 12, 2010
why do we even bother playin
the Phillies are gonna win this division all they do is win and hit walk offs so that means they are champions sez ESPN
Erihury - July 11, 2010
I am loving this Braves team, but I would love it even more if I could actually watch a game. I haven’t seen the Braves play since the 2nd week of June!
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
I haven’t had this much fun watching the Braves since the lethal lineup in 2004.

QTips quote from late april/early may
We is teh suxorz. No Whirled Sereez this yr.
I am so happy we are lots of games ahead in the east going into the break and those aforementioned days seem like years ago.
Qtips - July 11, 2010
You and Novia Scotia Steve are forgiven.
Scott Coleman - July 11, 2010
Whew, took me a while to get to the end of this one...
Dang Phils. But no worries – we did OUR business tonight as well.
Does my memory fail me, or did all of their games with CIN go into extra innings?
.
NCChopper - July 11, 2010
Sure did.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
And all should have been won by Cincy. Stupid Reds.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2010
In the land of crazyball...
the three-bunt man is king.
Biggus Rickus - July 11, 2010
I thought they were a serious power in the NL
After this series, in which they lost in nearly every concievable way, I’m not so sure. They can be fierce but they can also fold up like an origami swan.
Sam Jethroe - July 11, 2010
Check 1, check 2, check 3 please?
that’d be a nice way to end the first half (check 3 being the sweep box).
Mr. Sanchez - July 11, 2010
+1
